Cain Tiberius Kondrad
Thank you for the awesome comments folks :tu: I really appreciate every one. For my next project there will be thunder in the air ;) Anyone guess what I'm working on now? ;) Ok ok I'll show you! Please bare in mind this is just the beginning. Rough edges will be fixed in due process, aswell as building up layers of detail. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v416/Khabjte/B67FDB67-5685-45FC-8CC3-D915F8CA05E7-642-000001C10B0E292E.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v416/Khabjte/AFEF9A40-C908-41A4-8244-FEA9D8941974-642-000001C118038F36.jpg Ok so this will be predominantly made of card, with polystyrene core. There will be a few plastic pieces like the engines and weapons. I am getting measurements from Eli Patoroch's PDF plans and various other pictures. The main difference though is I'm not doing any interior detail. Instead making it a solid polystyrene and foam board core for strength. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v416/Khabjte/49B28117-3EE5-4B51-ADB2-B99426ED50DE-642-000001C122DBBDA3.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v416/Khabjte/E67EEC04-0665-4FD0-BBD9-DB008C5D260E-5272-00000D56D082510D.jpg That pic was pre gluing. It has since been glued and in typical Sod's law fashion it fit together better befor I glued it. Still it's alright as it's close enough to trim here and there and hide mistakes with extra detail. To attach the wings I had the idea of using 3 sizes if plastic tubing. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v416/Khabjte/52AE6C06-B237-4209-B0A8-C8F5DAC932D4-642-000001C135191F13.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v416/Khabjte/8C0C0C4E-0F37-4900-BAE0-876AA4FBCAF2-642-000001C13C218D10.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v416/Khabjte/AC9B33DB-4EF2-4D68-B756-BF1845BCD6FB-642-000001C12D79BAE9.jpg The largest size is 9mm and this one I fitted snugly into the main body. The other sizes will go in the wings to give a little strength, and also extend through the main body. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v416/Khabjte/6B43A075-F77D-49BF-BA05-5C94F224E4C8-642-000001C15BB37EAF.jpg Well.. That's as far as I've got so far. I'll be doing more on the actual structure of the main body. And then starting on the detail layers of the main body. Again thank you everyone for your comments :P Please keep them comming! If you have questions or suggestions, all are welcome. CTK. Cain Tiberius Kondrad
If I'd seen the LPC before my previous post, I would have included the vow there. So I'll add it now. I, Cain Tiberius Kondrad of the Blood Angels, vow on the honour of my Chapter to paint and present at least 1 scratch built and painted Thunderhawk Gunship on or before the 31st of March, 2013. I promise to provide at least two WIP updates, preferably with pictures, in that time. I vow that if I should fail, I will provide the Librarium with an article and wear the Signature of Shame until my penitence period is done. Cain Tiberius Kondrad
Just a small update. I built the fuselage back end so the main body is the correct size/shape now. I also made the engine struts that connect between the body and the engines. The pins are while the glue sets. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v416/Khabjte/857BF41F-8974-43FB-9B05-D260B57AB208-205-00000026C99A4739.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v416/Khabjte/0979678C-4DBE-4A17-AD25-6933C99C784A-205-00000026D3CD3261.jpg Please remember gaps etc will either be covered with detail, or filled in later on. I also mocked up an engine nacelle just to gauge size etc. It's not glued together or to the body, and more detail will be added later. They are made from 32mm waste pipe that can be obtained from any hard ware store relatively cheap. The ends of the engine are made from 22 mm pipe joiner that I was able to take appart as you will in the pic below. I also got some plastic shot glasses for the exhaust cones, but they are a bit brittle. If I can find an alternative, I may change. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v416/Khabjte/DC6E93F4-1DE2-41BE-A770-2C61B94BD055-819-000001EE3F63A482.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v416/Khabjte/EC4C6179-5D21-4D65-8B04-79DBA1817CAC-819-000001EE45AE2DDD.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v416/Khabjte/DE76172E-F967-4039-B003-5CEF9BC7481D-819-000001EE4E9949AB.jpg Here is a test fit.. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v416/Khabjte/1A0C407F-08E7-4A25-8E43-F1837113DC71-205-00000026DD1D28E2.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v416/Khabjte/9F59B3CD-5BAA-4B9E-A9C4-71648C47DFE6-205-00000026E5721C1E.jpg Not a huge amount of progress, but time has been short last few days. Cain Tiberius Kondrad
I was pointed in the direction of a shared folder of a guy called Eli Patoroch. He does PDF's of various GW kits that incredibly detailed. But I don't have a pc or laptop at the moment, so can't down load it. So I'm just taking some measurements from any decent picture I can find and guesstimating. Before you ask, admins don't allow links to the templates. They usually remove the link pretty fast or ban the user, I've seen it happen a couple times :/ CTK Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/238965-ctks-ba-blog/page/3/#findComment-3277639 Share on other sites

Cain Tiberius Kondrad
Ok so update time. I did away with the plastic shot glass exhaust pieces, they were far too brittle to cut. But I found some cheap bottles of mouth wash at Sainsburys which had perfect caps :) http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v416/Khabjte/C2304283-7A5D-4687-B0D0-13F3042C3343-100-00000001B5E4A8C0.jpg Using an idea from a guy on another forum called Morty, I made the turbines for the engines by cutting a circle from plasticard that would fit inside the pipe connecter that I'm using as the engine cowl. By diving it into 8, and then cutting along the diving lines, but not right to the centre. Then twisting the segments slightly. Also by drilling a hole in the centre, I added a pop rivet as the centre cone (whatever it's called). I'm quite happy with how it turned out. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v416/Khabjte/550248C9-C40A-4995-8F81-D172CF36BB0B-100-00000001D67F5802.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v416/Khabjte/02B30FE1-F1CB-4CD3-A5FE-77C1E4052C7B-100-00000001EE521D48.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v416/Khabjte/BD84643E-100E-45F2-9144-DCE7C15A6A5F-100-00000001FCC5E135.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v416/Khabjte/C7F7BF88-7AE3-4C6A-B297-4A313CA1C23C-100-000000018EC004F5.jpg As the 3rd engine is only half exposed, I attempted to cut the waste pipe in half length ways... That didn't work, my goodness it's tough. (I would have probably managed with a band saw or something like that, but I don't have access to that kind of tooling). So instead, I cut some vitamin tablet bottles in half and placed end to end with a shorter length of pipe between to give some detail. I made 4 main engines and 2 3rd engines. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v416/Khabjte/8BFE3D2C-686E-4E72-BF19-864C1715643B-100-000000020B9983E6.jpg And I've fastened the engines to the models. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v416/Khabjte/443E41D6-73AC-4F4D-80FC-0C15F0477527-100-000000021517EBD7.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v416/Khabjte/B4E5F6DF-F4A5-4E45-843D-72303D444A06-100-000000021D1F65BA.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v416/Khabjte/210CCE65-B19E-4F76-AF6C-6DB700AED330-100-0000000224045D5C.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v416/Khabjte/40664F6C-759F-4D3E-B5C6-392AFE28892F-100-000000022B966387.jpg Next to start the wings. I realised I made the engines too long. That in itself does not bother me. My concern was with the main wings. Here's a quick sketch to show you what I mean. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v416/Khabjte/EB50D04B-86A0-4ABC-9AEB-B6366DB05AC1-450-000000FBB75AB503.jpg The left side is how it was ment to be. That's how Eli Patoroch's and ForgeWorlds Hawks are. The one on the right is how mine is. But it's too late to do anything about it now. Talking with a friend, we agreed it was fine as it is. So... Anywho, I've been working on a wing. Only one so far, but I'm happy with it so I'll be doing the others the same. I've done it slightly differently from FW's design, but that's more to simplify the construction. I haven't glued it together yet, but here is what I've got so far. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v416/Khabjte/0B103320-817A-4320-B239-DB544989919A-671-00000146D78A58D5.jpg From left to right. Top layer including fold is card. 2nd, 3rd and 4th layers are 5mm foam board. Layered to form the bulk shape of the wing. 5th layer is again card. Should be noted, that the end of the wing (where the gun will be mounted) will attach to the 3rd layer, not the 4th. Cain Tiberius Kondrad
I definitely hear you there Brother! GW..FW.. Ripoff toads... Lol I've probably spent about £30 so far, and that's for both, not each. That's the pipe, the connectors (easily the most expensive part), the plasti tube, card and foam board... The polystyrene I've just saved from various places along the way. Anywho... Well I've got both wings assembled now. But like before, I have a lot of detailing etc still to do. They are attached, but not glued into place yet. And like the tool I am, I forgot to take a pic to show how they attach to the engines. But fear not! I still have to make the wings for the second Hawk, so I'll be sure to take pics then. But for now... http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v416/Khabjte/A53663E9-C115-4FB4-BE1E-A0C1A193F6F6-1099-000002992132E94C.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v416/Khabjte/A1708E0B-78B2-4513-933E-34842A72C9DD-1099-000002992B77D121.jpg And to show the strength in the wings, remember they are not glued yet. The 2 on the left are plastic, the 1 on the right in metal. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v416/Khabjte/D5D815BC-C5A5-4A2F-889B-F2B41C1E415B-1099-0000029932354699.jpg They are not the same as FW's model, but I'm happy so far :) CTK Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/238965-ctks-ba-blog/page/3/#findComment-3283630 Share on other sites

Cain Tiberius Kondrad
Thanks for the comments guys :) @perezrant: The Honour Guard helms are: Dheneb Stone base > 2x liberal washes of Gryphonne Sepia > Then a selective or detail layer of Delvin Mud (Agrax Earthshade) Its my attempt at NMM Gold > Then very lightly highlight with Bleached Bone.CTK Ok this update was supposed to be last Monday/Tuesday so expect another in a day or two. First up I took some pics on the 2nd T'hawk that I forgot on the 1st one. To show how the wings connect into the engine nacelles. It should be noted, due to a cock up, where the connections are on the red Hawk are, they're closer together and more centralised (front to back) than those pictured here. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v416/Khabjte/DF5799EB-7AE3-476F-AB0B-C9CCE28EC84F-99-00000000A87515A2.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v416/Khabjte/A0C7486B-AAE6-4ACA-97D7-F410AA3D366D-99-00000000BC7F31C2.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v416/Khabjte/50EC5F7D-803F-4FC4-B4A5-48A5E23D079D-99-00000000C2D786EC.jpg After that, I made all the remaining bulky pieces out of the 5mm foam board. Ei: Tail, Tail wing, Turret (minus cannon), Nose wings and the Dorsal? wings. I haven't done the card exterior for them yet as I'll do that with the detailing. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v416/Khabjte/B27650A5-C0BC-4227-8025-FA93DC1BC343-99-00000000CACBD976.jpg Again there is no glue there, the tail and nose wings are just held on with cocktail sticks which are strong enough to hold a couple a figures each, so once glue and card supports are added, I'm confident it will be sturdy enough. I decided to do the detail work on my friends T'hawk first. This is because I know if I did mine first, I'd want to paint it and my friends model would get left :/ Great thing about SM vehicles and the T'hawk is no exception, is that all the detail is flat, angular and simple geometric shapes :) http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v416/Khabjte/1774B5FB-5171-460E-BEF7-9BDE77D2C730-99-00000000D188EAC9.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v416/Khabjte/D5710D07-46D2-4832-B458-E1998333157C-99-00000000D8D5D5D7.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v416/Khabjte/10A29839-AAD7-4E92-99AA-CD75B17F18F5-99-00000000E06A53B7.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v416/Khabjte/81D9D185-D2C9-4A0B-813E-3C2329C08941-99-00000000E6BA639A.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v416/Khabjte/210E0B64-8F37-4361-BC32-3F699AE71377-99-00000000F0C0DAF3.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v416/Khabjte/D8573847-0DFE-46F5-B77D-14D223CDAEB1-99-00000000F7873441.jpg I really happy with how it's turning out so far :) What do you guys think? Cain Tiberius Kondrad
Thanks for the comment JR, really appreciated :) I've gone round the whole model now adding the detail layers and completely boxing in the wings (all 7-8 of them), the tail, the turret etc. The main wings are now glued in place using plastic glue on tubes/struts. The tail, tail wing, turret and nose wings all have wood tooth picks supporting them. These combined with the glue have made them really sturdy, 'which is nice'. Because of differences that already exist between mine and FWs model, I decided to deliberately alter a few other things. Some changes are for style, some to make my life easier. Instead of detailing the engines from front to back, I decided to put angular armoured covers like GWs current SM flyers including the Storm Raven. Also going down the same route, I made missile pods instead of the missiles hanging under the wings. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v416/Khabjte/E6D001C6-44C0-43A7-8903-A1CF4B2FC93E-249-00000022C896722C.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v416/Khabjte/E5BBC8B6-5237-4BAE-8AE0-566F746786EF-249-00000022D4DA7548.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v416/Khabjte/BD2249FB-3BBC-4622-BDEE-EDA0370110E0-249-00000022E08C3920.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v416/Khabjte/7B3C0074-DFB4-49F7-9B24-526D9F3E292E-249-00000022E99B810D.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v416/Khabjte/D375A3D5-5007-4D6E-8219-176F03F0A87A-249-00000022F62B6768.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v416/Khabjte/46F2406F-FAD7-4675-A28C-5F17EFAF8C5E-249-00000023271A6DC8.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v416/Khabjte/BF87D496-E86E-4BB0-A1B2-21EF0C5334ED-249-000000235B8414E2.jpg For the cannon I used 1/2", 7/16" and 3/8" tubing to create the desired look. The cannon hydrollic pistons? I used 7/32" and 5/32" tubing. Although not shown, the middle 2 sections of the turret foam board had a grove cut in them so the cannon can be slid in or removed. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v416/Khabjte/3C86937A-F3EC-424A-82B8-68A629E2FF31-249-000000232FB5BD10.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v416/Khabjte/D9626D07-1B0A-4A40-BDAD-6E792C9A0BCF-249-00000023379D51C3.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v416/Khabjte/4B0715F1-6E8D-4EDD-81E3-96498C2E94D5-249-0000002340C3C988.jpg Next I made the dorsal wings with las cannon mounts. These are fairly simple again just layering detail. I used the 3/8" for the hinge with a smaller tube insert (5/16" I think, not sure) and the wings do hinge. I also added the cradles for the las cannons at this point. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v416/Khabjte/3F7D7EC9-FEB0-4AA7-BD91-2E4C6FFB6AF2-249-000000234C4E1084.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v416/Khabjte/36C4AA86-B253-4D92-B233-64AB963F286E-249-0000002353D9EE36.jpg A pic of the under side and a scale comparison shot. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v416/Khabjte/0CF93D39-C139-4504-9986-54D9316BAD92-249-000000236583EA4B.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v416/Khabjte/C36340B1-F7F6-40EA-A089-E9A5A1E569B1-249-000000236BCF1E6B.jpg I've been working on the undercarriage today. But due to how much I've posted here, I'll leave adding them until tomorrow. :) Your continued support is greatly appreciated folk! Cain Tiberius Kondrad
Ok so I finished the landing gear,,, well almost. I'll be adding a few bits of pointless detail to break up the flatness of the feet. I'm using plasticard for the landing gear instead of card purely for strength. I've basically made simplified versions of FWs model for these. These are the centre posts which take all the weight of the models. I've made the undercarriage for both T'hawks at the same time. Pictured are the beginnings the rear undercarriage. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v416/Khabjte/8BD1C6F1-0B4B-4853-939D-85C8B957B810-531-000000D2ED814121.jpg I used 5/32" tube with detail sleeve of 7/32" tubing for the centre posts. The two outer hydrollic posts are 1/8" tubing with 3/16" tubing for the sleeve. I also cut the shape of the feet using plasticard and some simple angled pieces to support the base of the rods. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v416/Khabjte/1F6F6A23-207E-418C-8366-874AC3AC3CD4-531-000000D2F8934C13.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v416/Khabjte/D58BBA24-ED18-4181-B923-E594B12DBB28-531-000000D308FE8480.jpg Using the same sizes of tubing, I then made the supporting hydrollics. And attached then to the main leg by a fake hinge. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v416/Khabjte/B254CFF9-D747-4D08-A747-D5626D8D7636-531-000000D316891DD9.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v416/Khabjte/F574393F-7B18-438B-A764-D0C744B8903B-531-000000D32F772309.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v416/Khabjte/E2F3955B-F0E2-4B29-B6E8-16B5AF8F4F67-531-000000D31E8DDDE6.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v416/Khabjte/2185D0D4-B2C1-440C-B5EF-9F4E139DD6E0-531-000000D3359EFBCE.jpg The extra length of the middle post is how they attach to the Hawks. The front gear have a much much shorter leg so the extra detail is barely visable and difficult to fit in, so I left it out. I also added a piece of plasticard across the top for extra support. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v416/Khabjte/EF453FF5-8050-4D9D-A5BF-BC1A55C0AB96-531-000000D14792EF60.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v416/Khabjte/E46AFBF3-7A80-44C2-AE00-579927C94308-531-000000D14FC1135B.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v416/Khabjte/286A9C4B-1745-4212-A3DF-6FD8E79A2AFE-531-000000D15D788C65.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v416/Khabjte/717C2B73-760F-4601-B29B-2D3C3E4503F6-531-000000D1678C93F9.jpg I'm not glueing them on as they hold on well enough without and they are easily the most vulnerable parts. So having them loose make it easier to transport. This one is for my friend, this is as far as I go with the Black T'hawk. My friend is going to add Psi Cannons, GK iconography and paint for his GK force. Now I'll be starting the detail on my own T'hawk (the red one) now. Hope to have it done in about 7-10 days.. Cain Tiberius Kondrad
Ok small update. The red T'hawk is upto the same step as the black one. There are some minor differences between the two due to mistake/botches. For example; The wing on the red are about 5mm further back and have a slight up turn. But I difference I did plan... On the black T'hawk the side configuration is like FWs model. But on the red one, I had the idea of the double door way like Landraiders, with the twin linked Heavy Bolters in the from door frame. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v416/Khabjte/A4A85BCA-0A5A-4462-A289-7A1ED83B6FC5-4489-00000BF75C5BC50A_zps91634c7f.jpg On the black T'hawk I used Vindicator/Baneblade shells for missile tips. But on the red T'hawk I used missile tips from a 1/48 F14 Tomcat model I built recently. Befor cutting them up I took a pic for an example for those who like full missiles on their T'hawks. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v416/Khabjte/82F144EF-4611-4CC0-93CF-E33AB99CD2DF-4460-00000BF504F21E1D_zps7dccaae7.jpg And finally a pic of both models together. Now I just have to wait to see which model my friend wants and takes before moving on to the next stage. (I'm only painting my own =P http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v416/Khabjte/3DC52A28-C03B-4BD0-94DA-00CCDFDFFA1A-4460-00000BF51028FEBA_zps22f81682.jpg Comments Crits welcome.
