AoBR Conversions (Pics)

I've been browsing these forums for a few months now but this would be my first contribution

A little background about me: I started collecting 40k back in third edition but the hobby didn't really click with me. About a year ago I decided to get back into it and have been hooked ever since.

A while back I bought the AoBR set and since I hated the static look of the Dread and Captain I gave converting a try. (Sorry no "in progress" pics. I will try and explain exactly what i did though.)

First I took the Captain and converted him into a librarian since I already had a captain.

as you can probably recognize I "borrowed" a few ideas from this forums geniuses, such as the base. (credit goes to the creator but I cant find your post anymore so dont know your name.)

It was quite a simple conversion with most of the extra bits comming from the Ravenwing boxed set.

I first chopped off his head and bolter arm.

Then I took off the eagle that went behind his head and evened it all out

The pistol arm is from a tactical squad box and is simply trimmed down and glued onto the captain, since his sword usually goes in that hand and is removable.

The sword hand was a little harder since its stretched out (Ravenwing Sprue) so there really werent many position options without using greenstuff (which Ive never used).

The backpack was made from bits all found in the ravenwing attack squadron box. The book is glued to two of the original biker antennas and simply glued to the backpack. The peg is cut off the back of the captain and backpack is glued in place.

Overall I loved how this model turned out although I just cant decide what color to paint his cloak and sword.

For my second try I turned my sights on the Dreadnought and a new option, magnetizing. (just weapons not the torso)

I started with shaving down the front casket cover with and exacto knife and gluing the Ravenwing sprue version on.

next I clipped the sides of the left kneepad off and trimmed the pegs off the ravenwing sprue version. It glued on perfectly.

The skull and cross on the left was easy enough to cut off and get replaced with the sword-and-wing from, again, the ravenwing sprue.

No change to the melee arm, while the twin-linked lascannon is an extra from a landraider crusader box.

The base was my own idea. I used corners of sprue as the concrete fence poles that where simply chopped at with a exacto-knife.

The barbed wire on the top is a length of copper wire with bits of it wrapped around on intervals.

The mesh used as the fence itself is a plactic gutter protector that I bought at a hardware store. Got like 10 feet for $5 or somethin.

The rubble and texture is simply a handfull of dirt from infront of my house.

Hope you guys liked these conversions and I would love to see what others have done with the AoBR models!

Thanks for looking!

Both look very impressive . I like the way you scavenged for bits and turned out two great models with a bit of careful thought. The Dread's base is epic. The Librarian needs a bone white cloak IMHO to contrast nicely with the blue of his battle-plate.

Cheers

I like it! I always kind of snubbed the AoBR because the models (although nice) were too generic. And here you are doing a great job adding DA character to them! I really like your Librarian, an interesting twist from just doing a DA Master out of him. I can see Isiah's point of white cloak to lighten up the ovderall look but frankly I like what you did with the black too!

Dread base is indeed awesome!

Show us more :P!

Looks great! i used the AoBR as the base for some of my 40k pieces and found them easy enough to manipulate into something a bit less static, particularly if you have a decent bitz box! (that and they were so cheap on ebay lol)

I agree with Isiah on the cloak colour although it looks like you're after some really dark Dark angels in which case i would just add colour to the sword to emphasise the blackness of the cloak (rather than looking unpainted), a metallic would enough to pick it out if you dont want to go all multicoloured force weapon on him :(

The dreadnought's really cool and youve really captured that lumbering weight in the pose, sweet base too :P

look forward to seeing the rest!

Those are some cool conversions. I did the same thing you did with the dreadnought's sarcophagus, although your dread looks much cleaner than mine does. Very nice work.

I kept the multi-melta for mine, since I almost always use my dread with a drop pod. Good looking lascannon you made, and I love the base as well.

Nice dread Brother Kovash! I wish I had remembered to try and paint mine a deathwing color...

I bought a second dreadnought (box not AoBR) mostly for the additional weapon options (also magnetized) but now Im stuck painting that guy Dark Angels green as well because you cant mix and match bone weapons with a green chasis or vice versa.

Oh well... Im in the process of painting my crusader bone as well as 15 termies so Im kind of fed up with that color anyway, no matter how cool it looks.

besides I could always get some bone venerable dreads.... :)

Thanks for the kind words everyone!

I will try and put up a few more pictures of maybe some vehicles, but I'm afraid I may have set the bar too high for myself lol

So this weekend I manage to put some time aside and finish painting the Librarian.

I took your advice and made his cloak bone on the inside and dark green on the outside. also tried my hand at extreme highlighting on his force weapon, trying to give it that radiating-energy-feel but it still looks a little "off". I figure its because I'm still learning so perhaps after a few squads I'll revisit the idea.

Overall I'm really happy with the result. Someone please tell me how to make my robes look cleaner. no matter what I do I cant get a nice shading on them!

For the sake of nostalgia, this is a picture of one of the first marines I painted when I started the hobby.

My paint scheme consisted of:

-spray paint black.

-grab large brush, dip in green and proceed to jab at model until deemed "dark angels"

-paint eyes and gun.

yeah. you cant beat that result!

Hmmm, I have to say, I haven't seen shoulder pads used this way before...

Anyway there is an obvious progress since your early days :P

Let's see more of you recent work! Judging from your Librarian (and his sword) there is a lot of expectation building up! Shading the robes could be tricky. I am never 100% happy with mine no matter what technique I use. Others use washes others layered highlighting others a combo of the two... Bottom line: you need to paint loads before you settle with you favorite technique.

All things said, this Librarian looks very decent to me! Keep posting!

thanks! the bases are really easy to make. all u need is some drywall patching net and the box that GW stuff is sold in. the box is cut into strips and drops of PVA glue are added as rivets.

Its really easy to make and I think they end up looking awesome
