Ha! I did the same a while back and it is indeed staggering how Sock has improved from being a reasonable good but talented painter into the crisp EM painter he is today, over a mere three years :tu:

Ok, so, we're now in post-ETL territory which means dusting off the half finished projects that weren't eligible for the competition and sorting through the bits to find something new. for me that's meant getting back to my breacher squad (I dimly remember promising to finish them before the year's out...) and picking up my Deathwatch side-project.

This Breacher will end up looking a touch different to the others with the idea being that he's responsible for clearing a breach that isn't quite as practical as intel suggested, so lots of meltabombs and some parts to indicate slightly heavier duty armour.

Like a lot of people the Badab War books fostered in me an affinity for certain chapters, one of those being the Minotaurs, an affinity that was reignited when reading IA: 12 In that book there were references to Minotaur assault squads fighting alongside Deathwatch insertion teams in subterranean catacombs and I imagine this marine  being headhunted to join the Deathwatch ranks after they saw what he was like in the field.

With my Deathwatch hat on I decided to expand on my existing handful of models and bring them up to a full 10 man squad + Watch Captain. Currently I have a Black Templar and Crimson Fist in stationary poses and a Raven Guard marine who's running. Inspired by The Yak I've decided to model half of them in motion and the other half static so that a combat squad split is more obvious. The Minotaur is a first step towards rounding out the moving combat squad whose other members will be a Salamander (see below), Blood Angel and Silver Skull. The Watch Captain (see below) is going to be a counts-as Pedro Kantor Black Shield. Eventually I plan to give them a heavy-bolter or assault cannon Razorback and a heavy bolter Mortis Dread (they are Xenos killers, high rate of fire weapons with middling AP values seems about right to me).

Big thanks to those of you who read and liked (and conveyed that fact) the fluff, it's probably the longest piece of writing I've thrown up on here and wasn't too sure whether I've got the chops for it. So, yeah, cheers for stoking my ego further!

Most of the future question was answered above, but I've also got the last 4 under fire tactical squad members, half a Furioso, a couple more breachers and a cupboard full of parts to do!

Yeah the stuff on that first page... it makes me cringe a little looking back and I've debated starting a new thread so people don't get put off looking at the rest of this one by seeing that stuff. Then I remember that we all start off somewhere and as yourself and Augustus have pointed out, you get to see the progression if you persist which can be kind of cool.

I love the chain axe for a breacher. I can just imagine this poor sod running down the field, his gear clinking and clanking all over the place. So much for trying to sneak up on anyone. It's wonderfully characterful, though, and quite in keeping with a Deathwatch team where each member brings something to the table. 

 

Side note: I don't think I've ever seen your bronze recipe posted. That looks pretty close to a look I'm going to be going for. Care to share how you do it? Sorry if I just missed it.

I wanted the Breacher to look like he's running up the rubble in front of a breach and is ready to chuck a melta bomb into the gap to clear it.

He has a combat shield purely for aesthetic purposes. I remember reading that they are a particularly attritional chapter when it comes to close range fire fights and thought the shield would be a nice nod to that. Given that I was inspired by The Fall of Orpheus I thought I'd make a little nod to it by giving him a Necron trophy. That head is from the last Necron he killed in the campaign.

JeffTibbets - ah, well, the Breacher's a Crimson Tear rather than Deathwatch so he's not going to be doing any sneaking, but, yes, chain axes are always cool and help to set my breachers apart from others in the army.. Which Bronze, the one I use on my Tears or the one on The MInotaur's pad? In the first case it's just Vallejo Tinny Tin with a heavy brown wash, maybe a watered down black wash if I feel it's still looking a bit bright (I use Army painter Strong and Dark Tone for that, but washes are washes). For the MInotaur it's the same start point, Tinny Tin and heavy brown wash, followed by a new layer of Tinny Tin and then Tinny Tin + Army Painter Gun Metal (60:40 ish) with Matt Varnish finishing it off.

I have spent the last 2/3 days thinking about breachers, how to model them, how to green stuff ablative armour on the greaves, etc.

 

As already mentioned, great pose: " once more into the breach dear friends " it's like we are there!

 

But also truly loving the Mino, fantastic beaten brass effect, and love the way even the deathwatch share enough commonality with your regular marines so they will blend right in!

This sneakily allows me to try out a different red as I decide how to do an original son of Sanguinius for my envoys without having to do a full test model. I also tried out a different way of doing gems. After browsing through the BA showcase thread for the umpteenth time a remarkable Death Company Rhino by Taz  caught my eye, particularly the green blood drop decorations at the rear http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/topic/119231-the-blood-angels-showcase/page-46 and I attempted to do the Sergeant's blood drop gem in a similar fashion. Mine's nowhere near as good but it was a change to how I'd normally approach a gem and I quite like it


I also cobbled together the bits to make a Deathwatch Librarian (because when I'm fixated on a project my actual work rate comes a distant second to my brain's rate at coming up with ideas)

Now, hands up if you use back banners. Anyone? Yeah, me neither, which is a shame as a lot of them have some pretty cool icons atop their pole. Once you've been collecting marines for a while you tend to acquire quite a few of them and they sit there unused. Until now! Ta-dah:

Banner toppers used to make some custom tilt shields. I first had the idea for the Deathwatch librarian as a way of getting the Epistolary symbol on him and then decided to run with the idea on the rest of the blank tilt shields I had lying about. Hopefully you can see the ones that were made out of already primed bits.

Bio - It bloomin' well ought to be! I changed his melta bomb arm more times than a particularly angry  Death Company marine revs his chainsword to try and get him looking just so. Glad it paid off. Cheers, fella.

Slipstreams - Thank you kindly, the legs are a slightly modified version of the top pair of these http://bitsofwar.com/home/61-space-legionary-running-legs.html (basically I filled in the grill on the shin pad). Kromlech have got a lot of different leg kits, I've bought a couple of others, and the casting quality has been great on them every time. No sign of mould release agent (goodness me, the way some FW models arrive you'd have thought they've been sprayed with ten coats of gloss varnish) and only the most insignificant of casting issues (the odd small hole here and there). Thoroughly recommend them.

*As a side note, I've noticed models with third party bits, usually Anvil, Maxmini or Kromlech, slipping into the GW flickr stream from time to time. It always tickles me when that happens.*

NightHunters - I wish I could say I'd planned on having the Deathwatch guys blend in, but that's just the way it's shaken out. Still, it's definitely a good thing. I was aiming to match the images from their various IA appearances with my bronze/brass and it's probably a bit 'browner' than that in some of the awesome Minotaur logs on here, but I'm pleased with it and glad you approve.

Oh yes! I would love to see what you can do with Breachers, especially if you could add that extra plating. I'm finding it kind of tough to get legs for my final breacher (no. 9 is going to have Mk. 5 ones, 'cause bonding studs) as, without wanting to chop up Destroyer or Reaver bodies, I've pretty much exhausted marine running legs that look chunky or have extra armour for these guys. Wish my green stuff-fu was up to the sort of idea you've had. Thanks for the Breacher compliment, they really are one of my great labours of love.

I've also been working on a fantasy vampire just for the hell of it, but that's not really for here, despite being a blood sucker I don't think I could really claim him as a Son of Sanguinius to keep with forum rules.

Only one model to show today, my Salamander. He took rather a lot of time. Turns out that the heavy flamer has plenty of surfaces requiring shadows and edge highlights and fire is not as easy as one might think to get a handle on. Still, he's all done now and I've broadened my palette of techniques a little further, I'm quite pleased with how the yellow/amber eye lenses came out as they were a real shot in the dark. Pictures:

marine - thank you. I hadn't really thought of my black as looking smooth, but, now that you mention it, that's a pretty good adjective for it.

Head - Forgeworld Iron Hands Head upgrade set
Torso - Grey Knight
Backpack - Grey Knight
Legs - Kromlech running legs
Left Arm - Command Squad shoulder pad, Forgeworld Mk. 3 Breacher arm + Shield plus a brass etch piece from the Blood Angels sheet.
Right Arm - Dark Angels Veterans shoulder pad, melta bomb and hand from the Devastator. Don't know about the arm itself to be honest, just grabbed it out of the bits box,
Accesories- chainaxe is from the Forgeworld set and melta bombs are from wherever you gradually acquire melta bombs from.

Augustus - ha! Excellent. As a Brit, and therefore obliged to watch a certain number of costume dramas during which many a fair English rose swoons in appreciation/desire, swooning is very well received response.
