Crimson Tears, Deathwatch and Inq28 Updated - 05/02/23

Some plans fell through today thanks to the foul weather we're currently experiencing (I know, I know, a Brit moaning about the weather...), the consolation being that I had the time to do this:

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2013/12/23/567421_sm-.JPGhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2013/12/23/567424_sm-.JPGhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2013/12/23/567423_sm-.JPGhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2013/12/23/567422_sm-.JPG

Sergeant Azazel, Breaching Team 2, 4th Company, Crimson Tears.

Like many prominent members of the Crimson Tears Azazel’s story is one of heroism and tragedy. Two centuries ago he served in the 5th company’s vanguard detachment. The 5th are renowned within the chapter for their lack of fortune and so it proved once more on what turned out to be the Necron tomb world of Trantis. Detecting imperial distress signals from the planet surface the company deployed en masse from their strike cruiser, Righteous Vengeance. What they found upon landing was a massacred Adeptus Mechanicus exploration team. After two days of securing the site the planet's Necron denizens attacked. A week of brutal fighting occurred, during which the company fought against bewildering odds, before a long enough pause in the conflict for the company’s remaining storm raven to make a safe descent to pick up survivors. 13 marines made it off Trantis. Had Azazel not been gravely wounded and unable to fight it is doubtful he would have left; his wounds were sustained whilst defending the bodies of  his squad and he struggled against Chaplain Moriar as that revered leader attempted to rescue him.

As the 5th rebuilt, Azazel sought out Captain Ezekiel of the 4th Company and requested a transfer into the ranks of those siege breakers and ship breachers. Knowing of his combat prowess Ezekiel gladly accepted his new recruit despite the concerns expressed by Moriar. The Chaplain explained to the Captain that with his beloved company decimated and not one of his squad mates having lived through the carnage on Trantis, Azazel now had a death wish, which is why he sought such fierce frontline action as that routinely seen by the 4th. Ezekiel acknowledged Moriar’s concerns, but believed that Azazel would nonetheless be an asset to the 4th. And so it has proven, Azazel has risen to lead his own breaching team and his personal kill tally is the like upon which legends are built. Moriar, despite remaining with the 5th, is in constant consultation with the command structure of the 4th about his displaced brother and he is perturbed to learn that Azazel has in recent years abandoned the use of a siege shield, preferring instead to wield a second close combat weapon. His death wish would appear more pronounced than ever and yet, despite his recklessness and thirst for battle, his formidable combat prowess means that he very rarely sustains so much as an injury. This frustration at being denied the Emperor’s grace is increasingly matched by his guilt at losing battle brothers. The longer he survives the gruelling missions of the 4th the longer the list of former squad mates becomes. Outside of issuing commands during missions, Azazel rarely speaks, but to his Captain and the various chapter chaplains who attempt to see to his spiritual needs, to diminish both his guilt and his desire to die. The marines under his command respect his combat record, martial skill and tactical acumen, yet the aura of sorrow he radiates chills them all.

He has been granted undue leeway to alter the colours of his Angel of Death icon, changing them to resemble those of a
Penitent. It is hoped by the Chaplaincy that such a move will help to exorcise his chronic guilt. Indeed, over the last few campaigns he has begun to sport a buckler on his right arm. Ezekiel has used this to try and persuade Moriar that Azazel’s near suicidal disregard for his personal safety is slowly being eroded.

Hope you enjoy. Oh, feel free to answer some of the questions posed in the previous post, too! I really would like some feedback/discussion.

Aeglaeca226 - well thank you very much! It's extremely flattering that you would take the time to do that.

Deathspectre - well then hopefully you enjoyed this update. Blood Drinker is next on the list of things to finish.

I do love the holidays, plenty of time to get things done; particularly when you don't have running water for 27 hours and can't see any friends because you've had to skip effectively two days of showers... (the water's back on now and I am up to date with personal hygiene in case any of you wanted to know)

I have finished my Blood Drinker:
Now I'm halfway through the loyalist Blood Angel Successors (though, if we count Flesh Eaters and Knights of Blood then I'm only  3/8). I might shoot for an Angel Vermillion next, Lamenters are definitely going last. As much as I love the yellow step-children of Sanguinius' lineage tha,t checkerboard pattern combined with painting a decent yellow is too much of a headache to even contemplate right now.

Finishing Azazel prompted me to swell the ranks of the breach team with this chap.
With the pose I was shooting for nonchalant/ "you're shooting at me and I really couldn't care less", hopefully I succeeded. I feel i need to say that the white slashes on the right side of his face plate aren't misaligned, there's a third on you can't see from the front which makes it all make sense.

With the water in my paint pots becoming increasingly murky, having been unable to replenish it (see above), I started on the bases for my future demi-tactical squad that I wanted to model as if they're involved in a close range firefight, hugging cover and shooting through/from that cover. So, bases:

Deathspectre - Send him your way? Are there traitors to butcher and walls to breach? He'll be there, he'll be there. Best ever? I am inclined to agree, which is annoying as he's only a sergeant; oh well, we all know NCO's run the armed forces anyway and are cooler than the officers.

Bio - Ta! Although I genuinely try and stay quite modest about stuff I don't mind admitting I pretty much nailed what I was trying to achieve with him and feel he looks damned good, it's cool to see others having similar reactions to the finished product.

The_Chaplain - Thanks a lot, to be honest I don't think Azazel ever has any gum, he makes the second option the default one. The helmet is from the Legion MK. IV / Mk. IV Assault squad head sprue. and the whole body (torso+legs) is from a Sons of Horus Reaver (whichever one had the most easily removable iconography).

Blood Drinker looks awesome mate as does the WIP breacher. I'm looking forward to the Demi squad as I've had this idea for a while bit was never sure how I would pull it off, I like what you're doing with the building bits and can't wait to see how you finish it.

More Breachers!

The new guy's been finished and, if I do say it myself, he looks plain mean, really happy with how he's turned out.
http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2013/12/31/569168_sm-.JPGhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2013/12/31/569169_sm-.JPGhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2013/12/31/569170_sm-.JPGhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2013/12/31/569171_sm-.JPG

When putting him on the shelf with the others I noticed this guy again
http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2013/2/25/467767_sm-.JPG
and, frankly, he sticks out like a sore thumb. I still like the idea I tried with him of turning to a source of fire mid run but I don't think it's very well executed and his pose doesn't fit with the motion of the others who are very obviously charging forward. So I chopped him in half, rotated the torso and made up any damage to the paintwork.

That's 6/10 breachers now, might actually finish them over the next year!

Bio - :biggrin.: . I've worked out all the poses for the guys who're going to be on the bases and thus far, held together with blu-tac and unpainted, it feels like it might just work. Not sure how I'll get enough variety in to extend it to a full squad, but that's a little way off yet!

deathspectre - as ever my thanks for your kindness.

The_Chaplain - thank you, I'm sure going to try, will definitely miss the amount of hobby time the holidays afford.

ChaptermasterDemon7 - ask and you shall receive.

Happy 2014, everyone! May all your hobby endeavours go to plan. A new year means taking stock and planning ahead, but before we get to that here's a couple of things I did in the final day and a bit of 2013.

Having refreshed the breacher marine I decided to update one of my fabvourite models a little bit. Here he was originally:
http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2012/5/23/369506_sm-.JPG

Now since that photo I dropped him and his angel broke off the top of his pack, plus I've got better at painting so I redid the crozius, rosarius, pistol holster, eagle trinket on the left leg, tabard and angel icon as well as neatening up some of the highlights. Here he is now:
http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2014/1/4/570673_sm-.JPGhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2014/1/4/570674_sm-.JPG

I've also done the first of my fire-fight tactical marines, this guy is reloading in cover and trying to look over his shoulder at the same time. They're not particularly noticeable, but I scattered shell casings around his feet to emphasise his action:

As for taking stock of what's been here is the state of the army on December 31st, slightly understrength 2nd company (70 marines, 2 Sanguinary Priests, 2 Chaplains, 2 Librarians, 2 Dreadnoughts) with detachments from the IVth (Captain Ezekiel, 6 Vanguard Veterans w/ Storm Shields and a Siege Dreadnought) and Xth (6 Scouts) companies totalling around 3,500 points :

For the future we definitely have - demi-tactical squad, demi-assault squad, Baal Predator, breacher squad and Inquisitor. After that, who knows? I certainly have more than enough unpainted models and bits to come up with something!

KBA, deathspectre - cheers, gents!

Thanks a lot. The black's pretty simple, I prime with Hycote matt black then do a couple of thins coats of Army Painter Matt Black, highlight with Vallejo Model Colour Neutral Grey. If I want a slightly darker highlight I'll use VMC Basalt Grey.

Great work on the breachers and yes, i now must steal the power weapons. All of them.

Also a fan of the urban bases, still working on mine at the moment, only managed to paint one but really like where you are going with them!

  • 2 weeks later...

Just a quick one, my holiday hobby frenzy was halted by the return to work so I've noit got too much done, but there's a new member for the tactical squad, the idea is supressing fire before hurling a grenade:
http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2014/1/16/574803_sm-.JPGhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2014/1/16/574804_sm-.JPGhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2014/1/16/574805_sm-.JPGhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2014/1/16/574806_sm-.JPG

I've also finished another side of the Baal, so it's now starting to look like a tank:

Deathspectresgt - you're always too kind. I do like the way all that hard work looks when its all together, though.

KIerdale - :thanks:

NightHunters - yes you have! Glad to show you nice things on your long awaited return. I'll watch what you do with yours with interest, too as I think I might struggle to get 10 distinct poses out of what is essentially hiding in cover.

ChapterMaster - thank you kindly.

You will have to accept my apologies for not commenting on this log for a while. I have been flicking through but I've not had much time to sit and write the comments that this progress surely deserves!

Firstly do my eyes deceive me or have you really finished that Angel Sanguine? Great job brother and the Blood Drinker looks mint too.

Secondly AZAZEL  !!!!!!! I always knew that it would take something special to lead your breacher squad and he fits the bill. Love his chilling aura of sorrowfulness. What a story. I would like to see Moriar's facial expression when told that Azazel has even started using a buckler these days. I really like the new guy too. I bet he is the last to be taken away with injuries (Just before Azazel). However I think you are incredibly rude and selfish for not taking a picture of all the breachers together. I mean it is just common courtesy......

Both your Chaplains look fantastic, I really think they suit your army.

Great idea with the fire fight tacticals, good execution Ive tried that in the past and not  managed to pull it off.

I see you are working on a Baal Predator. What other vehicles do you have planned for your force?

Keep up the great work mate. Inspirational stuff.

OMG.

A  vehicle!!

:jawdrop:

No but seriously, looking great, those edge high lights still kill me!

Regards the poses I found that whilst some are defensive, hiding in cover as you say, others can be giving covering fire and again others can be bounding through windows, over walls, being sneaky around a corner etc so that opens up some options.

I have great confidence that you will think of something!
