Argent aquila - cheers, it's always the aim to produce stuff that's at least a little interesting and worthy of presenting to the internet. I'm glad you keep coming back to view the results andfluff my ego :biggrin.:

They look astounding!

Yup, that's me, faithful to the end! I'll keep coming back for more so long as there's stuff to see!

  • 2 weeks later...

What with it being the Six Nations at the moment a sizeable chunk of my weekends are being taken up with rugby watching and the pub (and then re-watch the games during the week). However, I have managed to get a couple of things done around such time sinks.

The main one is a complete reworking of my Seth counts-as, Ezekiel. When I took a picture of him side by side with my other counts-as captains a lot of details jumped out at me as not being to the standard I currently demand of myself and it's been playing on my mind ever since. So I decided to refresh him a little and that quickly turned into a partial rebuild and pretty much total repaint. For those that can't be bothered looking back to see what he used to look like here's a quick refresher:

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2012/8/14/401433_mb-.JPGhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2012/8/14/401431_mb-.JPGhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2012/8/14/401429_mb-.JPGhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2012/8/14/401434_mb-.JPG

And here's what I've done to him:
http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2015/2/15/687353_sm-.JPG
http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2015/2/15/687358_sm-.JPGhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2015/2/15/687360_sm-.JPGhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2015/2/15/687361_sm-.JPGhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2015/2/15/687362_sm-.JPGhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2015/2/15/687356_sm-.JPGhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2015/2/15/687357_sm-.JPGhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2015/2/15/687359_sm-.JPG

So that's a totally new pack and pair of shoulder pads plus a tilt shield buckler for his right wrist. The arms and black leg have had their highlights completely redone, the accessories on his belt got the same treatment and so did all the white areas. I've made the deepest shadow paler and tried to layer it back out to white rather than having fairly stark grey lines as the shading. Admittedly the photos of the old version don't look too bad in this regard, but with the model in hand it was pretty mediocre and the new job is a huge improvement. Similarly, the black highlights in the old photos generally look ok, but if you zoom you can see small gaps in the lines and parts where they went wonky. Not good enough for me anymore, so they had to be changed. Lastly, I added a couple of purity seals, some decoration for his eviscerator, went over the skull on the base and re-did the jewellery on his left wrist and right thigh. They've not ended up completely different, I just had a whiter tone of gold that I wanted to use. He's slightly more covered in red gems now than I realised he would be, but that's not a bad thing for an HQ figure. Definitely feel better about him now.

I'm nearing the end of something else that I'll save for later as I'd rather show it completely finished than WIP.

In the meantime, for those wondering what lies ahead I leave you with these:

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2015/2/16/687725_sm-.JPGhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2015/2/16/687726_sm-.JPG

What do you think they might be for?

In other news, I did manage to do a little bit of priming last week as the temperatures took a lift while I actually had the time to go out and do it. Another such window this week and I may yet get the Siege dread ready for a brush.

Bio - Cheers, bud. Hopfully I addressed your query about new additions above. Speaking of which, I can't remember if I actually commented on the pics of yours (definitely recall liking the post), but congrats!

deathspecter - thanks and see above.

Augustus - cheers, completed these in a slightly more timely fashion than the tacticals... The Chaplain's quite old now actually, I think the pics of him as he currently is are way back on page 8 or 9 and that was when I went back over some of his details. Easily one of my favourite sculpts from GW and very glad mine's metal.

Slipstreams - ha, thanks, man. I credit the Kermode and Mayo film review podcast on the BBC for making me sit down and focus for long enough to make sure the lines are right.

Kierdale - thank you very much sir, always a pleasure to have you on the thread.

Argent Aquila - well thank you, very kind. You should be in luck there then, I've got enough unpainted stuff for at least the next decade going by how long it takes me to do a single marine.

The way you choose what colors to use and where always amazes me. It's like a scary carnival or maybe like when I was a kid I always liked to find the joker in a deck of cards to see how he was drawn differently from the other jokers I had already seen, if that makes sense. They look like very refined killers. The gold/bronze pack looks great. The Penitents look great too. More brutal then the standard troop scheme, as it should be.

Corbo?

Is that a hybrid of http://static.comicvine.com/uploads/original/14/147020/3941710-video_games_dishonored_corvo_attano_1920x1080_41469.jpg

Corbulo?

I approve.

Haha, i like your "extremely enthusiastic eviscerator-wielding berzerker" too! And don't get offended now, we all know that Seth -and Ezekiel by proxy too- is a berzerker.

I thought corbulo too, but the space wolf thing i have no idea...

More metallic pattering as small arms fire impacted harmlessly on the Land Raider’s hull; another vibration as a shell detonated nearby; the continuous dull roar of the transport’s engines . Jophiel unclosed his eyes and gazed around the compartment, observing the actions and rituals of his brothers ahead of disembarkation. Adonael was trying in vain to find more room on his belt for an additional meltabomb. Captain Ezekiel had been assured by the Imperial Guard Commanders that the breach was practical and it did indeed look to be so from their own reconnaissance, but the veracity of such declarations was often dubious where the Guard were concerned and Emperor knew what might be done to the breach when the time came to actually force it; best to be prepared.  To his left Jophiel noted Galgaliel flexing his new bionic arm. Riddled with autocannon fire during their last deployment, the youngster was more scarred than many a veteran and was fortunate to avoid losing more than just the limb.  Further towards the assault ramp Eiael knelt, murmuring prayers to the Emperor while Nahaliel hefted his chain-axe from hand to hand with obsessive focus. Hidden by his helmet, Jophiel lingered on the figure of Sergeant Azazel. Sat bolt upright, perfectly still with twin axes crossed on his lap he resembled one of the statues often found on worlds delivered by a space marine chapter, his complete lack of motion a stark contrast to the preparations of his squad.

The engines slowed and Jophiel felt the Land Raider turn. En masse the squad rose to their feet, arming themselves and falling into rank, anticipating disembarktion The blades on their axes whirred and whined into life, tearing through the air rapidly, seemingly mirroring the impatience of their wielders to close with the enemy. Moments stretched on for an eternity as Jophiel waited to follow his brothers from the safety of their ceramite sanctuary and into the likely maelstrom of the breach. They’d all done it before, some more than others, and nothing was ever the same but for the unpredictable nature of the resistance that would meet them. Jophiel himself had charged headlong into breaches across the Imperium and been met by as diverse an array of foes as a servant of the Emperor could find in that vast expanse. Today they simply fought the misled regiments of a planetary Governor with traitorous, separatist ideas far beyond his station and resources. There would be no such triumph as when scouring Eldar raiders from walls they were too slow to vacate out on the Eastern Fringe or reclaiming Hives around the Eye of Terror from warp-tainted astartes of the ruinous powers. No, today their foe was guilty only of blindly following the orders of an egotistical tyrant and for that they must die, but there would be no glory in meting out their punishment. Jophiel was drawn from his reverie once more as a muted roar different to that of the engines signalled the Land Raider’s gunner scouring the breach perimeter with the vehicle’s Flamestorm cannons. A further pause, torturous and slow, until, at last, the ramp began to lower. Even the dim, grey light of the outside was near blinding as it penetrated the Land Raider’s gloomy interior, helmet lenses rapidly adjusted as the squad spilled out onto the scorched earth before the walls, ignoring the charred corpses they passed. They made their way up the rubble that used to be part of the citadel’s defences and towards the gigantic gash in the exterior wall. The Guard had been correct in their assertions, the breach was practical.

Resting at the edges of the breach Jophiel detected noise from the defenders behind the walls over the din of battle. Orders perhaps? Certainly they would be aware of the ancient war machine that had just driven up to the citadel and no doubt they would be readying themselves for what was to come. At this Jophiel allowed a grim smile to flit across his lips. The Chapter had not deployed in this conflict until now, it was doubtful the renegades were prepared to face space marines, let alone the Siegebreakers of the Crimson Tears’ 4th Company. He imagined his brothers from the other breach units readying themselves to unleash their wrath at the other holes brutalised into the gargantuan walls. With a gesture of his crackling power axe Azazel signalled the squad to advance.

It has taken a couple of years (possibly longer, I don't want to think about it too much...), but the finish has finally arrived, the Breacher's are done! It actually feels a little weird to not have them there in the back of my mind as a project in need of attention. Anywho here is the member who brought this longstanding labour of love to its conclusion:

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2015/2/15/687321_sm-.JPGhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2015/2/15/687322_sm-.JPGhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2015/2/15/687323_sm-.JPGhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2015/2/15/687324_sm-.JPG

The more of these guys I've created the more I've tested my bits box for appropriately hefty looking sets of running legs and the tricker it's become to get a diverse range of fairly dynamic poses. Kromlech's relatively recent release of another excellent leg set helped solve that problem with this guy an the inclusion of a bionic leg inspired me to give him another bionic limb, suggesting that perhaps he's been first through a breach just a few too many times; not that it's diminished his appetite for the task.

While I was at it I decided to upgrade the first Breacher a little bit. He's so old I was still black lining my white and has a brown axe haft:

After

It feels good to get yet another unit fully completed rather than having it sit there having a member added here and there , been on quite a run with that lately. Expect that to change. Hobby focus? Not on my watch.

deathspecter - Yep, those were indeed parts for a counts-as Corbulo. I've got the chainsword too, waited for ages to find it and the grail arm on a bits site.

Augustus - Cheers, man. Woah there on the bezerker accusations, when loyal members of the Imperium go on a (sometimes indiscriminate) killing spree it's not going bezerk it's dispensing the Emperor's wrath. Plus they wear aquilas and say 'For the Emperor' while they do it so it's all ok :tongue.:. Bang on with Corbulo, I guess the wolf will just have to reveal itself in the fullness of time.

Radiation - thanks a lot. I wish I could say there was some kind of process but I tend to just feel it out and it seems to work okay. I hadn't thought of it like that, but I can definitely see what you mean; the primary colour palette definitely harks to playing cards.

That is one sharp looking squad. Thanks for posting the old pic, too. It makes you seem far more human, because nobody should be allowed to produce such strikingly perfect models on such a consistent basis. Knowing that you've taken two years to develop such post-human skills dries the single, salty tear that usually runs down my cheek when I gaze upon your edge highlights.

What a great collection of models. My favorite part is the assemblage of various parts you've used, and then made pop right off the table with color. Black and white color scheme are pretty common, as are mixed/quartered/halved schemes. But you manage to keep the models form being boring by injecting bold color into your scheme. You look at them and think, "Nice, crisp blacks and whites, good poses, very interesting." And then you turn the model a little and BAM! bright color smacks you in the face and makes it all that much better.

Thumbs up to you, sir!

So much win. It's certainly an epic squad, and I'm happy for you that you finally finished it. God knows I'd looove to play against you sometime.

But dude, your writing is really good. I'm a bit of a grammar nazi, except that my condition focussed more on punctuation and sentence flow than on actual misspellings (although too many of those will get my fire burning). But your writing is really evocative, slowly setting a scene, making me want to read on and on. I actually was a little bummed out that the story stopped when it did. You've kinda made up for it with the awesome pictures, but still. Please write more. :tu:

Also, fine. Seth is an Imperial Berzerker.

After some Crimson Tears related completions I felt that it's been a while since the chapter's allies have been somewhat neglected in recent times. To rectify this state of affairs I present to you Kapitein Geerhard de Vries, loyal bodyguard of Inquisitor Constantjin:

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2015/3/2/691471_sm-.JPGhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2015/3/2/691472_sm-.JPGhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2015/3/2/691470_sm-.JPGhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2015/3/2/691469_sm-.JPG

I've had this awesome model sitting around for a couple of years now and have always wanted to tackle it, but I was slightly worried I'd screw it up. Well, I'm now confident enough to give him the paint job I've wanted to. Clearly the metals still need a wash, but I'm happy with the start. A little bit of blending on the trenchcoat, some fine layering on the pouches; opportunities to try different colours and techniques.

He's not the only one swelling the Inquisitorial ranks, though, the Ordo Xenos have a new recruit awaiting finishing touches:

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2015/3/2/691463_sm-.JPGhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2015/3/2/691465_sm-.JPGhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2015/3/2/691464_sm-.JPGhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2015/3/2/691466_sm-.JPG

More different colours to work with :laugh.: , especially on the belt trinkets and the combat knife.

Hope to get these guys done relatively quickly so I can get to not-Corbulo.

Jeff - dang it, I knew I shouldn't have pulled back the curtain. Seriously, though, thank you for the colourful compliment and I agree it's quite nice to see, from time to time, where people started compared with their current level of proficiency; it provides hope to us all, I know I'm still nowhere near where I'd one day like to end up.

deathspecter - cheers, buddy.

ShinyRhino - Thank you very much. You've pretty much described what I set out to achieve with my guys in a nutshell, so glad to hear it's showing through to people. With black and white schemes being so common I've always viewed those parts of the model as the bare canvas and the important stuff is the auxiliary details, which is why I like to add in high contrast colours.

Argent - Wowee, that's quite a statement, thank you.

Augustus - :blush.: I don't really know what to say, man, other than I'm glad you enjoyed it. I do fancy myself a little bit of a writer, but I don't think I'm that good so to hear you say otherwise is really flattering. Sorry it wasn't long enough for your liking! I'll definitely do some more in the future, inspiration dependent. Oh and check your mail.

Brother Tyrax - Thanks a lot.

Wait, just wait a minute... You can edge highlight the way you do, AND YOU CAN BLEND LIKE THAT?! This just isn't fair to the rest of us... The blends on that cloth are absolutely stunning. Would you mind sharing what technique you use to get results like that? I'd say wet blending with two loaded brushes and maybe a drying retarder? I would have said airbrush, but I did zoom way in on Dakka and there are some steps, so I know it's not that. Are you just layering with really thinned paints, here? Anyway, it's pretty incredible.

Have you been on the painting steroids again mate?

So good to see what you have done lately.

THE BREACHERS ARE FINALLY FINISHED!!!!!!!!!! So good to see these done as they have been a constant treat throughout this beauty of a plog, popping up once in a while. Well done Bro!!!

Must say I love the Penitents too. Cracking idea and lovely scheme and fluff.

The New Captain and reworked one are sublime, the white pads are a masterclass in painting the colour.

I managed to use up a whole days worth of likes just flicking through the 6 pages since I last looked!!!!

Loving the Deathwatch project too.

Oh one more thing, great to see the full army laid out. You must be proud of all your work Brother.

Well in lad!

Here I return with last week's models completed. There's not much else to say really!

Deathwatch Space Wolf:

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2015/3/6/692732_sm-.JPGhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2015/3/6/692733_sm-.JPGhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2015/3/6/692734_sm-.JPGhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2015/3/6/692735_sm-.JPG

I experimented with his Deathwatch pad, adding Reaper's anti-shine additive to the metallic paint to see if it would defeat the need to use matte varnish to get the effect I like. Although I don't mind it I think I'll be sticking to the previous method. Tried some different colours for the wolf tails on his pack as wolves do come in more than one and I fancied using more of the humungous range of paints I've accumulated over the last 3 and a bit years despite only regularly using a comparative handful...

Kapitein Geerhard de Vries, Esko PDF, 3rd Regiment, 2nd Battalion, 4th Company.

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2015/3/7/693151_sm-.JPGhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2015/3/7/693152_sm-.JPGhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2015/3/7/693150_sm-.JPGhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2015/3/7/693153_sm-.JPG

Kapitein de Vries came to Johann Constantjin's attention during the aftermath of the daemonic incursion on Esko that set the latter on his path to becoming the feared agent of the Ordo Malleus that he has become. The Esko PDF, in which de Vries served, was almost annihilated as it attempted, vainly, to withstand the ferocious onslaught of the Khornate monstrosities unleashed upon their world. de Vries was but one of a handful officers who survived the ordeal and almost unique in that his continued existence came about despite being a constant presence on the front lines, standing shoulder to shoulder with his men while both superiors and subordinates cowered in underground command bunkers or simply deserted, shirking their responsibilities to their men and to the world. His inspirational leadership, married to a keen strategic mind and indomitable resolve, was credited with preventing several cities near the incursion's epicentre from total destruction. Mighty deeds considering the scale of the carnage wrought before extra-planetary before relief forces arrived to push back the daemonic tide.

Once Esko had been delivered and left to attempt reconstruction de Vries found himself not lauded and rewarded for his efforts, but court marshaled for disobeying the orders of those with higher rank than he. Imprisoned along with several of his most trusted NCO's, he was offered up by those who had failed Esko as a scapegoat for their ineffectiveness and cowardice. Constantjin, a man of influence even before being elevated to an acolyte of Lord Inquisitor van Lecht, heard tell of the conspiracy to bury one of Esko's true heroes and was outraged. Not powerful enough to bring down the well-connected aristocrats who permeated the top ranks of the PDF and its associated bureaucracy, he was able to secure the release of de Vries and his men. Disgusted at his treatment by the PDF hierarchy and harbouring a zealous hatred of the ruinous powers after they had so scarred his homeworld de Vries  readily accepted Constantjin's offer to join his fledgling retinue, on condition that the offer be extended to the loyal NCO's.

Since that day de Vries has traversed the Imperium by Constantjin's side and is fiercely protective of the Inquisitor.  After all, the wounds of Esko remain raw for the Kapitein and Constantjin has provided him with endless opportunities to exorcise the rage they engender. de Vries service is characterised by the same unflinching belligerence in the face of chaotic entities that so distinguished him in the rubble of his home planet and both he and his men remain some of Constantjin's most valuable warriors in the fight against the darkness that threatens to undermine the Imperium.

That's all for now, folks.

Bio - Cheers, man. Must say, the wolf's been a hell of a lot of fun. So many little trinkets.

Jeff - would you stop? We Brits aren't equipped to deal with such praise! It is hugely appreciated, though and I do enjoy it . The technique is... well it's not quite blending but it's more than layering and involves a wet palette. I finally buckled and bought the P3 one as a bit of sponge in an old blister pack was proving inadequate. I laid down my base colour which was Scale 75 Eclipse Grey + some Reaper Pure Black and then gradually added more and more of the Eclipse Grey until I got back to pure Eclipse Grey. The key really is the wet palette, it allows you to apply such thin layers, which stay a little bit moist without any drying retarder, that you're almost glazing your way up and it makes what is basically layering look like blends. Is that at all clear? Like I said, it's not really one or the other and I'm just playing it by ear. So far it's worked, though I think it was a bit less effective on the smaller canvas of his arms.

deathspecter - :thanks:

The Yak - ha, if only. Nope the British Winter, distance from friends and tendency towards reclusivity are what keep me working away. Thank you ever so much for the effusive praise over basically  eveything I've done in the last few months! It is nice to finally put the Breachers in the finished column of my mental checklist, but at the same time I've liked dipping in and out of them, making sure each one's really unique. I do enjoy the response the Penitents elicit, they were a lot of fun to paint up and for such an iconic unit as Death Company I knew that my own take really had to be good. Thankfully you all seem to approve. The full army shot actually catches my breath a little, it's odd to think that I've done so much in such a relatively short time and it does feel good seeing it all laid out like that, though getting everything out of the cabinet to set them up now takes quite some time!

Kierdale - thanks a lot.

The bodyguards awesome like the fluff as well. As for the Wolf guy, it may just be because I'm viewing this on my phone but the face seems to lack some focus. I'm not knocking your painting at all mate as you are far beyond my skill set it just seems like the eyes could be a little brighter or the grille on the helmet could be a little more defined. Like I say not trying to knock your work just trying to help a bit. I do like the variant wolf colours though. :tu:

I didn't really feel like painting today, but something the estimable Augustus  b'Raass said spurred some hobby activity nonetheless (providing a welcome distraction from my beloved Wasps' dispiriting loss at home to Saracens in England's top flight rugby competition).

Here we go:

Don't know if you can see the scroll beneath the angel, but it says repent. On the other side I cut the annoying crossed bones off the door and, frankly, think it looks orders of magnitude better with just the skull and cross. Then again, I do have a slightly irrational hatred of skull and crossed bones designs on space marine stuff. The reliquaries on the exhausts are only tacked on for now so don't worry if they're a bit off centre. The plate on the rear door says 'Blood of the Fallen' for those who may not be able to make it out. Anyone guess who it's for?

Bio - thanks, man. It could be a lot of things. I do use a very dark grey highlight on the Deathwatch which can struggle to show up on the black if the lighting isn't quite right. Also I've suspected for a little while now that my camera is dying, a theory born out by the fact that the macro function fought me hard when taking pictures of the tank parts just now in a way that it's never done before; it just did not want to focus and things being in focus is something I've felt has been a little off in my photography for a while now. With both those things in mind I can't imagine viewing on a phone helps too much. Looking at the picture on my monitor, the grill is distinct, but I take the points. Maybe on the next one I might add a touch of lighter grey to the mix when doing the face highlights.

Augustus - Cheers, buddy. That's certainly where the origins of his name come from. I've got a lot of affinity for the Low Countries having enjoyed time in Utrecht and Amsterdam a couple of years ago . Plus, somewhere in my blood there must be some Dutch as the Canadian side of my family has the surname van Horne. On top of that, between my A-level history course and history degree, I spent a significant part of five years of study looking at the Netherlands and their role in the Reformation, exploration of the new world and commencement of the era of global empires.  So yeah, a lot of interest in and love for your bit of the world!
