I'm actually kind of hoping you DO decide to affiliate them with the Blood Angels (unelss you already have; admittedly, I haven't read every page in this thread); we need more marines to help find the Cure to the Flaw! (That, and the Sons of Sanguinius are obviously the most badass of all marines. :D)

Woooo.....Took me a while to catch up with you on this.

Loving the Deathwatch, love the mods on the older guys and the tarantula is awesome.

Looking forward to seeing Olubroc finished.

Actually a little jealous about how your painting has outstripped mine byu leaps and bounds

Keep up the excellent work mate :tu:

1000th post and I have finally finished not-Corbs and that includes giving him a name, so I present High Apothecary Phounebiel:

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2015/4/13/704843_sm-.JPGhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2015/4/13/704844_sm-.JPGhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2015/4/13/704845_sm-.JPGhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2015/4/13/704846_sm-.JPGhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2015/4/13/704847_sm-.JPGhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2015/4/13/704848_sm-.JPG

The name means 'angel who thwarts disease' which seemed rather apt. I wish I had some fluff to accompany him, but nothing really came to me, maybe it'll happen later. Not entirely happy with how the photos have washed out the shading on the white. I find it's really difficult to illuminate models enough to show up the other colours without doing that.

Managed to complete the Novamarine, too:

Deathspecter - cheers, glad you like him. Ha, yeah, clearly great minds think alike when picking bits. 'were' going to be'? Have you changed your mind?

Bio - thanks, buddy. I hadn't made that connection at all, Hopefully this'll be enough to tide you over until the ETL gets into full swing.

Riconas - thank you very much. I haven't yet made it clear who the primogenitors of the Crimson Tears are and I'm not sure that I will. I like the mystique, it's one of the things I really like about the Minotaurs' background too.

Raz - ha, yeah, man. There's been quite a lot since you were last around these parts. Cheers, for the compliments. Think you might be overstating the difference in our painting, but I'll take it!

Brother Tyrax - nice to see you back man, thanks for the kind words. Yeah, I'm really enjoying the Deathwatch and I like that so many of you guys seem to be equally as enthusiastic about them. Ha, I don't know, didn't think your lot played well with others.

You never cease to amaze with that painting, my friend!

Not Corbulo has some seriously nice metallics going on all over the miniature and in his hand, great work!

Not to mention the Novamarine, who is by far one of my favorite minis you've done, the spot color of the shoulderpad and the grav gun looks so nice! :biggrin.:

keep it up!

Yeah, I agree; the only reason I made my chapter a successor is because my original army was Blood Angels. Still, regardless of your decision, I'd be happy to battle beside my Battle-Brothers from the Crimson Tears! (Not to mention get some building& painting tips! :D) Feel free to check out my threads (WIP & IA entry) and leave some feedback. Can't wait to see more! :)

[troll] He's supposed to be a phony Corbulo, right? So why did you name him phony Belial? [/troll]

AAAhahahahaha oh snap.

KMN

OK, no seriously: he looks rad. The modelling, the posing, the painting, all have led to a brilliant miniature. Well done, my friend. After seeing him, the novamarine looks kinda bland, even though that too is a beautifull mini. I just guess I miss that beautiful red on him, somehow. :tu:

Great Work. But just for clarification you use a brush for this ultra thin and precise highlights on the sm? they diviate not bit from the curve and thickness. for me at least impossible. care to share the brand you use?

Well, as I'm off marines until the ETL starts and still had the painting itch, but didn't wish to slay myself over the minuscule details of my my Malifaux crew, I decided to make a start on the servo skulls I've somehow managed to acquire in baffling numbers.  Even accounting for these two I've still got at least seven other unique servo skulls (and a few duplicates...). I'm not really sure where they've all come from  as I can't really remember acquiring so many, perhaps Inquisitor Constantjin, their ultimate owner, will have to have a word with the tech-priest tagging along with him about production rates. Anyway, here they are:

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2015/4/16/705658_sm-.JPGhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2015/4/16/705659_sm-.JPGhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2015/4/16/705657_sm-.JPG

Not the fanciest paint jobs, but solid enough. They came together surprisingly quickly considering how small some of the more interesting details are. Helped me finally find a use for those two bases as well, I'd knocked them together on a whim a while ago and then figured out I couldn't really stick a marine on them with any ease and they've sat around ever since.

Argent - Cheers, buddy. I always get a bit nervous when I tackle metallics that aren't  my usual silver or bronze since I don't often do them and it almost feels like the first time I'm trying it on each occasion. Even though Reaper Master Series Old Bronze is the base for pretty much all the non- ronze or silver in the army I dont think I've ever gotten quite the same result from it twice. Hang on a minute, the Nova's probably one the simplest marines I've ever done and he's one of your faves, you mean I don't have to try so hard in the future?:tongue.:

Bio -  Ta, mate. Ha, neither can I, it does look a bit of a mouthful, I imagine he only ever gets addressed as 'brother' or 'High Apothecary'. I've been trying to refine my white lately and making the shading more subtle, especially on character figures, glad to hear it's impressing.

Riconas - Same here, I got 2nd ed. Space Hulk and was hooked on BA from then on, it's why I can't bring myself to completely abandon the imagery or use a different codex to organise my army even if their fluff marks them as being quite different. If you ever have questions about something I've done, feel free to ask away, I always try to be helpful. I'll stay on the lookout for your stuff.

Brother Tyrax - Thanks, bud. Eerie is definitely a good word for him, the deathmasks have that effect. I like to think that the Chapter leadership found a databank of cultural artifacts from the days of ancient Terra and have become massive fans of John Capenter.

Augustus -  It took me an embarrassingly long time to figure out what you meant by that, it's a cracking a pun, though! Thanks very much, I did put quite a lot of conversion work into him, more than a lot of my recent models, so its nice to hear you pick out the modelling and posing aspects alongside the paint job :happy.:. Heh, yeah, the Nova's a bit unlucky to be following one of my centre-piece miniatures. It's like coming on stage after an amazing band and being tasked with matching them (seeing The Bronx back in '04 springs to mind, can't even remember who they were supporting, but they owned the stage and whoever followed them hadn't a chance of living up to it).

Donkalleone - thank you, welcome to the thread. Yes, I use a brush to do the edge highlights. This time I was using a Rosemary & Co. Kolinsky Sable Series 33 size 0, but I also use Windsor and Newton Series 7 Finest Sable Size 1 for a lot of my brushwork. Honestly the brand isn't that important, you just need a brush that holds its point well (Rosemary & Company and Windsor & Newton brushes happen to be brands whose brushes do this) and the skill to use it properly. Edge highlighting like mine comes from lots and lots of practice. Even then it isn't perfect, I make mistakes and then I go back and take the time to fix them until I am happy.

Kierdale - Thanks a lot man. Glad you like the Nova's spot colours, the violet grav coil, in particular, was a really fun detail to paint.

First of all,  jesus christ dear emperor, that second base with the servo skull, the eagle is sooo nice!

Sure as hell tops the standard citadel colors, so far as i can use them anyway. There's just so much more depth to the metals that you maintain, and it's enough of a difference for a guy with janked eyes like me to tell while still being a very strong metallic, dunno how to describe it, but it's still way nice!

Hang on a minute, the Nova's probably one the simplest marines I've ever done and he's one of your faves, you mean I don't have to try so hard in the future?:tongue.:

It's got to be the paint scheme on the pad...... I just love the light blue he's got, the stark contrast is great! (mind letting me in on what paints you used?)

i suppose i'm just a good 'ole suburban simpleton who appreciates the little things, like shoulderpads, every now and again. :biggrin.:

(thinking about it more, may be because in my first actual game on the tabletop, i crunched through a good 7-8 enemy marines with a lucky grav gun tactical, who happened to also be the very last to die :happy.: )

You know the drill, sir. Keep 'em comin'!!! :laugh.:

  • 2 weeks later...

As the ETL approaches, the 2nd Company sends forth one of its attached initiates from the 10th to conduct important reconnaissance:

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2015/4/25/707754_sm-.JPGhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2015/4/25/707757_sm-.JPGhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2015/4/25/707756_sm-.JPGhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2015/4/25/707755_sm-.JPG

Totally not breaking my marine ban since he's not wearing power armour, right? I haven't painted a scout for literally a couple of years and a few of weeks ago someone commented on my old ones in my Dakka gallery. Re-visiting those old paint jobs was both nostalgic and chastening, what I thought at the time was great is definitely some way below my current level. So I felt the need to see what I could do with a Scout now. Definitely an improvement imo.

Argent - Thanks buddy, the Eagle was fun, I don't usually get to paint that much gold, certainly not such warm gold as on models I tend to prefer a colder, white gold. I'm grateful for the compliments about my metals, it's one of the areas I think I really need to learn how to improve in comparison to the rest of my painting, though I have started to get to grips with my Old Bronze. I do try to get really deep shadows into my metals as I don't like edge highlighting them at all, it's usually achieve just from washes, though; nice and simple.

Nowt wrong with appreciating a good shoulder pad, it's where an awful lot of the character and detail of a marine comes from. I wish i could give you a proper breakdown of the paints that I used, but I vividly remember struggling to get the exact colour I wanted for the blue and just picking up stuff at random and mixing 'til I got what I was after and rushing to paint it on before the mix dried on my palette. I think it was a basecoat of Vallejo Game Colour Sombre Grey (that's what's in the recesses) and that the main pastel blue is a mix of Reaper Midnight Blue and Vallejo Model Colour Grey Blue. (with a bit of white added for a highlight of course).

The Servo skulls are Cool. Nice and smooth on the Scout,Helmeted heads are the BEST!!!! . Pig Iron helm I presume? Ihave 9scots on my desk waiting for paint. But I have to finish putting the Bases together for ETL. Angels Sanguine hate plain bases.

I think it's best to always paint the cod piece as armor (in your case black) rather than as cloth, for reasons that should be fairly obvious. :teehee:

I loathe that you could get such a smooth paint job on to that cloth, though.  I had a nightmare with those just a couple months back.  Digging the base, too. :)

Well with just one day before the ETL I have one more non-marine to show. Finally decided to one of my servitors that's been knocking around in a bag with just an undercoat for a couple of years now:

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2015/4/30/709852_sm-.JPGhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2015/4/30/709855_sm-.JPG
http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2015/4/30/709853_sm-.JPGhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2015/4/30/709854_sm-.JPG

I used different reds on it than I normally would just to see how it turned out - VMC Black Red and VMA Gory Red (plus a little VGC Ghosty Grey for highlights) - and the result is remarkably similar to what I'd expect from two of my commonly used colours, P3 Sanguine Base and Sanguine Highlight, which is quite interesting. The model is from Micro Art Studios, but I've replaced the ends of its arms with bits from Blight Wheel Miniatures servo arm sprue. I really, really don't like the existing servitor models and this has a great Ad Mech feel to it that seems more in keeping with who you'd have helping  Mars-trained Techmarines to maintain the chapter's armoury.

In other news I got hired for a new job yesterday which, while welcome, could have an impact on my ability to contribute to the BA forum's ETL title-bid. I'm still going to vow, but it/they will be small ones that probably won't mean much in the great scheme of things. We'll see how it goes.

Quixus - couldn't agree more, those heads make me think that they were the last thing in the kit needing to be done when the sculptor found out he was being let go or something, they're so bad they seem like a deliberate attempt at sabotage.

deathspecter - thanks man.  As above, any kind of head on scouts is superior to what you're provided with in the box. Helmeted heads are always the preference, though, because they look that much more badass and how the hell do we expect any Initiates to make to full Astartes status if they're all wandering around with squishable heads? It has to be helmets. Yeah, mine, like so many others, are Pig Iron (you'd be forgiven for thinking that alternative SM scout heads are all they sell). Will look forward to seeing those over the coming weeks then, well done for choosing to stand with the Sons of Sanguinius; extra kudos for picking one of the coolest successors.

Firepower - what codpiece? Yeah I absent-mindedly started painting it as cloth and once it was layered properly I hadn't the heart to paint over it. Besides why does he need armour for that area? It's not like he's going to get to use it for anything worthwhile... I accept your loathing and sympathise with your plight; it's not a fun or even remotely easy task and I probably spent far longer on it than a Scout's trousers merit. Put it this way, it'll likely be a while before I have another crack. I can only take credit for painting the base and if that's where the compliment was aimed, then cheers! It's one of Micro Art Studios' old Old Factory bases, I think Basicks own the rights to those designs now after the split.

Ok, so for the ETL I have vowed one counts as Cypher and pone counts as Mephiston:

This is how much progress I've managed to make on Cypher despite starting a new job:

Raz - cheers, man. Enjoying it so far, but the extra commute is eating into my painting time.which is sad, but I was always unlikely to get a better commute than my previous one unless I actually started living in my new work place. A decrease in hobby hours was always going to be on the cards at some point in the future.

deathspecter - thanks, buddy.
