Oh, I missed your reply about the paint blending. Yeah, that makes perfect sense to me. I stopped using my wet palette lately and have been doing some two-brush blending (one brush being nothing but water). This technique looks so smooth and really works for your clean marines. I think the arms look just fine, personally. It's a rather low-contrast scheme but that works very well for this model.

It's so cool that you have an interest in my country - and regarding such a turbulent time of its history too. Amsterdam is - as you know- filled with history. I live about 150m away from the central square, in a house built in 1626. It's the attic of a merchant's storage building. Definitely drop me a PM when you're here, so we can play a game and/or I'll show you around. :tu:

It's also funny, as my best friend's father's name is Gerard de Vries. :D

He (your mini) looks awesome. As does the wolf.

Time for another update and this one brings most of a new recruit to the Deathwatch kill team, someone with enough ferocity to keep up with his Wolfy brother in arms:

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2015/3/19/697068_sm-.JPGhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2015/3/19/697071_sm-.JPGhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2015/3/19/697070_sm-.JPGhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2015/3/19/697069_sm-.JPG

It struck me that this guy is now 3rd son of Dorn that I've painted up in Deathwatch colours, yet not one of them has been an Imperial Fist.  Guess they just have a lot of cool successors. This was the first time I tried painting one of the special ammo bits from the Sternguard kit and, while a bit fiddly, it was a lot of fun. I looked at poison dart frogs to get an idea of colours to use for the tips, which I imagine to secret all kinds of chemical concoctions and nasty xenos toxins.

I've also been working hard on my counts as Corbulo:

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2015/3/19/697085_sm-.JPGhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2015/3/19/697083_sm-.JPGhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2015/3/19/697084_sm-.JPGhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2015/3/19/697082_sm-.JPGhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2015/3/19/697086_sm-.JPG

I think going forward I'll be using the 30mm bases that came with my BA tactical squad for any characters as the extra space allows for more creativity and pose-ability,  particularly if have two feet on the ground.

The Chaplain - Thanks, man,  Soon as I saw them on a bits site this is what I envisioned them for.

Jeff - I've only really just started with the wet palette, though I don't usually have much cause to use it with my marines as the scheme was developed without one. The arms do look fine on reflection, you're right, I think my eyes were playing tricks after spending so long layering. That sounds like an interesting technique, never even heard of it before, will have to look it up and see if it's something I can incorporate.

MagicMan - Cheers, I quite like him. The white is actually pretty straightforward (or at least it feels that way to me). I base it in Vallejo Game Colour Ghosty Grey (which covers remarkably well over a black undercoat), cover that with GW Ceramite White and then go over it with Vallejo Model Colour White. Most shading is done with Vallejo Pale Grey wash, but on characters I'll work up from a 50:50 mix of VGC Cold Grey and white.

Augustus -  Turbulent history, unfortunately, tends to throw up some of the most interesting and well documented incidents. I definitely plan on a return trip at some point as I was only in Amsterdam for a couple of days and there was a lot of stuff I didn't get to go see, so whenever I get around to that I'll definitely hit you up. That is a very strange coincidence! Glad you like the model.

The new Deathwatch addition looks the business.

As for TBB, I did a quick Google for "Meg Maples two brush blending" and found a few blogs that mention how it works. Check out http://heavensteeth.blogspot.com/2014/06/review-painting-class-with-meg-maples.html?m=1 for a start. I'm sure there are YouTube vids as well. I had been doing the same sort of technique for many years on my own, but using one brush and basically eating the paint off it to blend. It wasn't a good situation, so the addition of the second brush was a bit of a revelation.

Yup, some of those paints can taste really nasty.... That Deathwatch Executioner is going to be epic. I love the shoulderpad especially

The worst were the foundation paints, precursor to base paints. I don't know what was in them, but I was sure I poisoned myself and my mouth went numb from the Mechrite Red one. Ugh. Those were dark days, friends.

I thought Mechrite red was okay, for me it was and still is the Charadon Granite, makes my face twitch like when you suck on a lemon, but lemons tatste nicer!!

On topic thogh, is the Executioner pad a custom job??

Edited by dantay_xv

Ok, so I finished the Executioner, try to imagine what he's saying (hint: the phrase ends with 'bro')

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2015/3/24/698528_sm-.JPGhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2015/3/24/698529_sm-.JPGhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2015/3/24/698530_sm-.JPGhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2015/3/24/698531_sm-.JPG

I've also begun, ever so slightly, his next squad mate. It occurred to me after it was done that they were on opposing sides of the Badab War divide, could be interesting the field...

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2015/3/24/698527_sm-.JPG

Bio - thanks man. I'm going to try and get Corbs finished over the weekend.

Jeff - cheers, mate, on both counts. Glad the discovery stopped you from eating paint! I mean, it was just wasteful beforehand.

dantay_xv - I wish I were able to sculpt custom pads. No, the Executioner's Chapter pad is actually from the HH Imperial Fists Phalanx Warders.

Dolchiate Remembrancer - thanks very much and yep, that was the idea behind them straightforward yet decent looking.

"come at me bro."

:tongue.:  I love it!

the white of that shoulder pad (symbol and underside) is TO DIE FOR!

I'm sure some good story-making will come from that pairing mate, would absolutely love to hear some of their dialogue mid battle. :happy.:

Done a little bit more work on not-Corbs, it's only an arm and the apothecary vials for his belt, but they took a lot of time and effort:

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2015/3/27/699305_sm-.JPGhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2015/3/27/699308_sm-.JPGhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2015/3/27/699306_sm-.JPGhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2015/3/27/699307_sm-.JPGhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2015/3/27/699309_sm-.JPG

That shoulder pad was one of the least obviously useful to me from the new BA tactical box. Note I've painted the angel's head white, this will have a great deal of symmetry when model is finished. The Sanguinary Priest chainsword is a lovely piece,

I've also been mucking around with bits to create another future Deathwatch member. Can you guess what he's going to be?

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2015/3/27/699290_sm-.JPGhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2015/3/27/699291_sm-.JPGhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2015/3/27/699293_sm-.JPG

The gun he's sporting is one of these:

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2015/3/27/699292_sm-.JPG
Kromlech's excellent, new Legionary Thunder Guns. Now those are drum mags.

Argent - exactly! Thanks a lot man, I tried to do a bit more layering with the white than I usually do. Heh, it's not just those two. There's the Minotaur as well and I've got a Red Scorpion pad in my bits box, too. So that's 3 Badab loyalists and 1 reluctant secessionist in the same Deathwatch detachment, could get interesting...

One thing that bugs me about those Kromlech guns and you may be able to fix with a file or some scraping before you've fainted them up, is that wonky ejection port that's like a foot behind the magazine and the action of the weapon.

The Executioner turned out great though. Very evocative and appropriate to the Chapter.

deathspecter - Cheers. Good man, I feel like a Kromlech shill sometimes, but I really do love their products (even many of the ones I have no direct use for) and think they're well worth supporting. Ding, ding, you are correct sir, he will indeed become a Mortifactor. Probably can;t see it on the photo but the legs are the Grey Knight set that have Mortis engraved into the right greave. Thought they'd be perfect as Space Marines never knowingly undersell a theme.

Jeff - a shrewd decision indeed.

Veteran Sergeant - Thanks man, I do try really hard to capture the parent chapter identity with each Deathwatch member. Thanks for pointing that out about the gun, it hadn't occurred to me to be honest.

The shades in the white seem even more subtle than usual on him. Is that intentional? It might just be the camera playing tricks as well. Also, and this is a minor quirk, I think the blue-gray cables seem a little weird. That color doesn't seem to pop up anywhere else that I can think of, so it almost looks like a mistake. Might it be better to tie into established spot colors, even from the same model? Seems like you could use the maroon and dark green, for instance. Just a thought.

EDIT: Actually it looks like the same recipe as the Space Wolf. Are you intentionally pulling that color in for some reason?

O.O I have been missing some serious stuff here. I just recently got the new BA codex, and it broke my heart to see I could no longer run 30 man strong Death Company squads (have 24 atm) so I am debating if I should take them and turn them into something else or just leave them as they are. But your thread has inspired me to start back up, considering I have fallen behind.

*drops burshes* I didn't think it was possible but you've seemed to have improved on the level of crispness of your painting. Again. It's getting to the point where my envy is slowly turning into hate. Nothing to worry about - I'm already corrupted to the core, so feeling the gauchely bland emotion of hate is like drinking a Saturday afternoon coffee for me, but still. ;) It's incredible how awesome this Death Watch squad is turning out to be. Kudo's! :)

Decided to rake a break from Olubroc (as Biohazard christened him) while I wait for the long Easter weekend to be over and for his damned back pack to show up in the post, so some progress on the Deathwatch has been made.

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2015/4/6/702550_sm-.JPGhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2015/4/6/702551_sm-.JPGhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2015/4/6/702548_sm-.JPGhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2015/4/6/702549_sm-.JPG

I'm actually really pleased with this guy, mainly because he's from a chapter you don't often see in the various Deathwatch projects that spring up on the web.

I've also been gearing up for the ETL . This year I won't be contributing much at all as my work situation is currently quite variable and even if I end up with a light load it'll still leave me less time to paint than previously. In pursuit of maximising the amount of points withmy available painting time I've settled on a couple of fairly high value characters. This means my Mephiston counts-as has finally been refitted since his accident a little while ago and I've gathered the bits for my very own take on Cypher. They needed bases, though, and so I knocked together custom 30mm bases for them, Cypher's on the left and Meph's on the right:

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2015/4/6/702552_sm-.JPGhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2015/4/6/702553_sm-.JPG

Once I polish off Corbs and the Novamarine I may disappear and do some Malifaux for a bit so there's no danger of marine burnout when the ETL kicks off.

Slipstreams - thank you. Well, since Jeff turned me onto Master's brush soap I've found it even easier to retain a point on my brushes and 1 hr 30 min + podcasts are the perfect thing to obsessively refine highlights to, you don't really notice how much time you spend correcting that one damned line that just won't come out right :verymad:

Jeff - it's a bit of both, I've lightened the shadows a touch while layering them more at the same time and I think the lighting has reflected a bit more severely than usual off the white. Re: the cables, as they're power cables for the drill bitI wanted to differentiate them from the colours I used on the vials and tubes attached to his belt (red and green) and wanted to use fairly neutral colours for that, nothing too bright, so I settled on a couple of different greys, mindful that I wanted to use different tones than those featured on the base.

Bio - cheers, buddy. You'll have to wait just a little longer, I'm afraid!

Chaptermaster - hey, good to see you back, man. Yeah, I've been fairly productive in recent months, eh? Well, GW taketh away, but also giveth. While you can't run one giant unit anymore you can still get 15 in a squad and they're no longer a 0-1 choice. So, if you really wanted to, you could run a Baal Strike Force Detachment (4 Elite slots) and take 60 Death Company! Glad to push you back towards to side of the Angels :biggrin.:

Augustus - Ha, blame Jeff and his brush soap advice! And the You Made It Weird podcast for making me just sit down for huge chunks of time and paint without noticing how long it's been. I think mere hate is basically as close to love such a depraved, millenia old VIII Legionnaire as yourself can get to, so I thank you kindly for feeling so warmly towards me and my efforts :tongue.: Seriously, though, thank you. I'm super stoked on how well received my Deathwatch are and I'm really enjoying making them, particularly as I try to find ways of including more obscure chapters. Managed to rustle up a pad from the bits box that'll work for Angels Porphyr :laugh.:
