Just a quick one, having finished the Rapier's gun carriage duirng the half time breaks of today's televised rugby games I thought it a decent enough amount of completion to share.

I've also begun work on alternate MK. III crewman to either of those actually supplied with the model. He'll be one of Dorn's sons, but haven't quite decided what flavour yet as I don't want too many first founding chapters in my Deathwatch force, but have already done a Crimson Fist, Executioner and Black Templar. Leaning towards the Fists Examplar, they're 2nd founding apparently, but don't seem to have a canon colour scheme which would give me a lot of leeway. Minor conversions so far are the faceplate of the MK.III helm being smoothed over (so much cooler lookin imo) and the purity seal.

The painting process so far has large been a barrage of expletives and yearning for it to be a plastic kit. My love of sharp, precise highlights is not assisted in any way by the imperfections of resin.

Augustus - thanks,man. In this age of older armour marks being freely available to us as modellers that I had to come up with some kind of reasoning for a sergeant to be decked out almost entirely in Mk. VII and prodigious youngster seemed to fit the bill. I love servo-skulls like any right-minded servant of the Imperium, I don't like the oversized signum; it feels like a fairly obvious choice to swap the latter for the former and instantly ramps up the grimdark quotient. Hell yes heavy bolter rapier, I've had this bad boy on the back burner for too long and it's such a cool model.

NightHunters - nice to see you're still knocking around the place mate. Bearing compliments to boot! Thank you. One of my absolute favourite novels in Bernard Cornwall's Sharpe series is Sharpe's Company with the Siege of Badajoz as the back drop. It's not the only siege I've read about, but it always struck me that certain parts of the defenders' forces would be bypassed by the soldiers making the penetrative thrusts through their lines, so you need someone dedicated to clearing up what they might have left behind. What better way to do it than with a nice big tank of Promethium?

I'm aiming to have the Rapier finished by month's end, hopefully it'll be enough to inspire. I feel like we don't see enough of them on the forum, people seem to prefer bigger FW toys to play with, so it'd be awesome to see yours too. To be honest there's not that much you can do with it except decorate the feth out of it and stick it on an interesting base.

Those assault marines are awesome man! Your painting is super clean. I also really enjoy the pose on the sternguard sergeant with the combi flamer and lightning claw. He's very dynamic and looks like he just spotted his next victim after dealing with the one at hand.

Right? On that note, I've toyed with the idea of using a matte varnish when done painting and then going over lenses with some 'Ardcoat to give them the proper sheen; has anyone else tried this?

I have used that idea on my raptors. I used black for the lenses with a gloss varnish. Looks more realistic than the gem look.

I actually do that as well. I tinted some Future floor polish and I use it as a glaze on gems and lenses.

For the last two centuries, an unprecedented period of service, Fists Examplar veteran Niels Goosen has tended to the relic machine lovingly, ensuring that it is as ready for war now as  in the days when Primarchs led their chapters to battle and operates it with consummate skill.

To differentiate the black on the chapter pad from the rest of the model I used Reaper Master Series Dark Elf Skin Shadow to give it a purple tint . Forgot to do his left arm silver, but, I'm npt fussed about that. There's so uch silver elsewhere , not least the bionic leg on the same side of the body, that I think more would be detrimental to the whole model. Pretty fun model overall, if a little frustrating due to the amount of resin involved and how much that impedes edge highlighting; the only plastic parts are 3 of the purity seals, his belt accessories and left arm. I had initially resolved to use an earlier armour mark for Niels, but in the end I liked the idea of a veteran operator to go with the relic war machine, though I dislike the stock MK III rapier crew.

Jeff - You know, you may have mentioned it once or twice , but I certainly don't mind hearing it again. Please accept my profuse apologies for any distress this may cause. Glad you enjoyed being able to zoom in on the pictures, it's one of the reasons I use the Dakka gallery.

Riconas - thank you for echoing the estimable Mr. Tibbett's sentiment.

Gents - as regards glossing on lenses/gems and the painting in general: I paint so much black and white that I enjoy the colourful gem effect almost as a palette cleanser. I tend to find that glossy surfaces are more difficult to photgraph and can obfuscate the detail, which would be a waste of the effort expended. I do tend to gloss the red laser bits I paint on weapons.

It's ETL time and much like last year my employment situation is irritatingly up in the air at the end of August so I need to devote a fair amount of time over the next few months to job hunting rather than painting Crimson Tears. That said, I am making some semblance of a contribution to the Blood Angels cause with the following:

My mk. VI Chaplain and a Lascannon Tarantula for a total of 140 paltry points. I had clean forgotten just how cheap Tarantula's are in-game. Nevertheless the Rapier got me in the mood to paint some more marine support weapons.

Since taking my proof a few days ago I have done this:

May work some more one the amber lens, it doesn't look bright enough  compared to the green one.

I have also decided that the Tarantula base will feature a lone Crimson Tears veteran who is using the sentry gun to cover his rear and flanks while he faces somethin off base. Hes currently in many half painted pieces:

He's a Republican Commando Assault Specialist from Anvil's Afterlife line. Potentially an IG shotgun vet. or perhaps one of the police-esque forces that are a step below the Arbites and handle the day to day stuff as far as keeping a hive under relative control goes. Been reading a little bit about the latter after following a 40k wiki trail about different patterns of shotguns in the universe. Every good Inquisitor can do with a couple of shotgun toting SWAT types in his retinue, so that's probably where he'll end up.


hushrong - Thank you, man,  Couldn't agree more, I have a soft spot for the humble heavy bolter and so four of them strapped together made one of these things an inevitable purchase.

Glad you guys dug the gold on the shoulder pad so much, I wasn't sure how it would come out (metallics are still easily one of the weaker parts of painting). Augustus, it's pretty simple: Reaper Master Series Old Bronze with increasing increments of Army Painter Gunmetal added for 4 layers until it's almost pure silver and then a hefty brown wash.

Jeff - thanks, man. Now I'm a little worried I over-sold  with 'mini diorama' it and will be a touch disappointing. Well, I'll have the time it's taking to do the Chaplain to think about how to make it worthy of the title and your expectation.

Thousand Eyes - Thank you. Oof, the first few pages... I kind of wince looking at that stuff now. I toyed with the idea of starting  new thread so that wouldn't be there, but, at the same time, I do think it's cool to have it there as a reminder of where I started.

NightHunters - Cheers, buddy. On both counts. Got to admit that a big incentive to do another Tarantula was to play with those lenses. Once I did them I kind of lost a bit of interest, hence moving onto the Chaplain.

The Arbite is looking mighty fine - interesting to see almost the reverse i wold expect, i.e. dark fatigues and light armour - looks good!

He's done. Unusually I haven't come up with a name or backstory for him yet. To be honest I've got an awful lot going on at the moment, so I'm not feeling overly inspired at the moment. Maybe later for him. Anyway, pictures:

I didn't tilt the torso forward as much as I'd intended to, nor the head back enough. Slightly dilutes the sense of motion. Unfortunately my super glue is crap at the moment, taking forever to dry, which means holding it for a while and almost inevitable slippage.. Should really replace it, but after the weddings of two very close friends within a month of eachother (both requiring significant travel) I'm pinching every damned penny. Purity seals haven't turned out as well as I've come to expect, maybe I got a bit lazy.

Other than that, I kind of feel like I nailed him, especially the bone of the helmet and the bronze of the Crozius.

deathspecter - Cheers man. He's not actually one of the new Anvil products, one from the Afterlife line and so a bit more true-scaled, though I've got some of recent regiments line with shotguns too for a nebulous point in the future.

NightHunters - thanks buddy, that was pretty much my thought process, invert what you'd expect to see.  Plus the pale armour enhances the slightly futuristic aspect of the Afterlife models.
