sockwithaticket
There's some big news about to be dropped here; my librarian is finished!!! He's been a labour of love (and a little hate, particularly when fixing a couple of mistakes that spilt onto his robes). Might have to have a look at the grey highlights again having looked at the photos up close but other than that I'm happy with him. I decided to go for two crimson pads to help set him aside from the rank and file a bit more and the black winged tear just to try something a little different as far as my insignia go. Here's a whole bunch of shots:http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2013/5/13/495727_sm-.JPGhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2013/5/13/495728_sm-.JPGhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2013/5/13/495729_sm-.JPGhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2013/5/13/495730_sm-.JPGhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2013/5/13/495772_sm-.JPGhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2013/5/13/495731_sm-.JPGhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2013/5/13/495732_sm-.JPGhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2013/5/13/495733_sm-.JPGNext up are the two assault marines I've made most progress on out of the four remaining squad members. The latter two have had work done, but not enough to warrant display at this point.http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2013/5/13/495753_sm-.JPGhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2013/5/13/495754_sm-.JPGhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2013/5/13/495755_sm-.JPGhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2013/5/13/495756_sm-.JPGFinally started in on my Dreamforge Eisenkern. Probably going to have them count as Warrior Acolytes with bolters for the most part. This guy's just a test, so far all the edge highlighting feels like a bit much for a grunt... http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2013/5/13/495751_sm-.JPGhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2013/5/13/495752_sm-.JPG Oh and this kind of happenedhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2013/5/13/495724_sm-.JPGThe start of a Furioso (Plasma Cannon is not for him), waiting on a frag cannon and some talons now.Moved the whole force so far to a new location and it actually looks like a lot more than I realised (horrendous photo, but the back of the cupboard was too dark not to use flash):http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2013/5/13/495726_sm-.JPG Libby, Ezekiel 2 Chaplains 2 Jump Priests10 Sternguard10 Tactical Marines20 Jumpless Assault Marines 6 Assault Mrines 6 Sniper Scouts10 Devastators 2 Dreads 4 Boarding Marines 1 Honour Guard (Deathwatch Vet.)Including HQ's but not Scouts that's 67 bodies. Discounting HQ's it's still 61. 61/100. Getting there! Bio - thanks for noticing, as you know, I do try to differentiate them a bit. As for Meph, I've got half term coming up in a couple of weeks so I'll probably have a crack at him then. I'm breaking in some new brushes and have been a bit ill recently so haven't wanted to start him for fear of doing a slightly sub par job.Hunters - brush with a point, a pot of black paint to fix mistakes and patience! Having seen the photos i may have to go back and fix some of the 'lights from this update. I'm envious of pretty much everything you do, so nice to repay the favour!Raz - cheers man, hopefully the final product is up to scratch Edited May 13, 2013 by sockwithaticket Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/240799-crimson-tears-deathwatch-and-inq28-updated-050223/page/6/#findComment-3370394 Share on other sites
Firepower
Very nice work on the cloak. Blue is one of the best colors for that BAM! COLOR! popping off the model kinda look. I almost feel bad pointing out that the brighter blue snuck into the recesses in a few spots. :) The glowy hand came out quite nicely, too. That storm trooper is a pretty sick model, but isn't he actually taller than the Marines? But as ever the most amazing thing is how such a scattered color scheme comes together so well. sockwithaticket
Oh no! Now you've said that it's all ruined Seriously, though, I'm now going to have to go and find those bits and tidy them up.The Storm Trooper is marginally taller than a marine, probably by a couple of mm, but that's only because he's standing on such a tall base. Next to eachother on the workbench they are a bit smaller. Certainly they're more well proportioned (the size discrepency between feet is hilarious).I've never really thought of the scheme as being scattered, you finished by saying it all looks good, though, so that's ok with me! Firepower
I've never really thought of the scheme as being scattered, you finished by saying it all looks good, though, so that's ok with me!You rarely see people shuffle the location of colors with every marine. That variance combined with the occasional odd choice of segments for singling out makes for a very 'scattered' color scheme. Being the classic combo of black, white and red lessens the difficulty in terms of composition well, but it still takes a good eye. Good painting also helps a lot Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/240799-crimson-tears-deathwatch-and-inq28-updated-050223/page/6/#findComment-3370501 Share on other sites
NightHunters
That Librarian, awesome. Love the pale face and the blue is extraodinary! Thanks for the tip on the highlighting, looks like I will mainly be practicing. sockwithaticket
I'm back with assault marines and other things besides, hoping to get a reasonable amount done this week as it's half term. Apologies to Biohazard, though, as I'm still struggling in my head with a scheme for Mephiston and the ETL's starting up so he may have to wait. Anywho, onto the assault marines. With the chaps now in this state: http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2013/5/27/500768_sm-.JPGhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2013/5/27/500769_sm-.JPGhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2013/5/27/500767_sm-.JPG it is time to get to work on their pads and packs and then I'll have my first proper assault squad done. Given that my lot are loosely based on Blood Angels I feel slightly ashamed that it's taken me this long to get some done. Almost by way of compensation for this laxity I went through my bits and realised I've acquired enough parts and models for a 10 man melta squad (who will all be in Corvus armour) a minimum of 5 Vanguard Vets, 5 Death Company, Lemartes, a Jump LIbby and Jump Chappy. So at some point the Crimson Tears 2nd Company will have a legit airforce (emphasis on "at some point"...).As a side thing I decided to start knocking together some different dread options. The only one of them I finished is my FW multimelta arm that's been lying around for months: http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2013/5/27/500759_sm-.JPGhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2013/5/27/500758_sm-.JPG There is an Assault Cannon, a Plasma Cannon and Missile Launcher arm that I've undercoated and magnetised that I'll be attempting to do every time I've got the right colours out.Other stuff I've been doing includes finishing a warrior acolyte with bolter (Eisenkern Stormtrooper with Sub-machine gun and grenade launcher attachment) to add to my nascent (read tiny) Grey Knights Henchmen allies:http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2013/5/27/500754_sm-.JPGhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2013/5/27/500753_sm-.JPGhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2013/5/27/500752_sm-.JPGhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2013/5/27/500751_sm-.JPGSo much edge highlighting! These guys are so well detailed for a plastic kit. It's awesome to do, but time consuming. Not sure baout the colour I used for the pack.He was joined in non-Crimson Tear endeavours by my attempt at an Angel Sanguine. I tried to forgo edge highlighting for this guy just to try something a little different and to try black in a way I'm not used to. I'd be interested as to any thoughts people have on the result. http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2013/5/27/500756_sm-.JPGhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2013/5/27/500755_sm-.JPGLast, but by no means least, as this is going to determine what I do for a little while now, my ETL vow! http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2013/5/27/500757_sm-.JPGhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2013/5/27/500760_sm-.JPG Furioso w/ Frag Cannon, Blood Fist (that strangely resembles a Talon) and Heavy FlamerHonour Guard w/ Blood Champion, Sanguinary Novitiate, Power fist x2.All of these models have a lot of details so they could well consume all the time up to the vow end. That's all for now folks, other than to say that the continued attentions of a few of you is both flattering and very much appreciated. Good painting also helps a lot Ah right! I thought you meant it was a really odd choice of colours to throw together when, as you've pointed out, red, black and white are fairly traditional colours to use with marines one way or another. You're in danger of compliment overload at this point by the way! (That's no reason to stop...)NightHunters- Thank you, I'm actually oddly proud of the face. It started as a way to avoid painting actual flesh tones, but turned into something I actually quite like and will use in the unlikely event of future marines not sporting a helmet. Don't know how much of a tip it really is to tell you to use a brush with a point, but hey, whatever helps Mainly it's the clean up thing that helps. I must say the grey I use for highlighting is probably the worst paint I could use to do it. Not only does it need a lot of thinning but it dries really quickly on brushes too. It could just be the bottle and/or my ineptitude to be fair, but for now I'm blaming the paint given that most other colours I've tried my hand at aren't anywhere near as difficult to highlight with.Raz - mate, if I had the money for 'Raiders... There is a Baal Pred somewhere in the future that I've had knocking around half built for a while. Will that do? Very happy to get a positive reception to the Libby, There's a lot of stuff on there I've not attempted before and to hear you all confirm it came out well is awesome. sockwithaticket
It's been a lot longer than I thought since the last update, but here we are eventually. Blame the odd days of nice weather we had In England for putting me out of sorts and slowing everything down.First of all I have finally brought my assault squad up to strength. I have definitely spent much longer on these guys than was necessary, but here they are, the final few in their individual shots and then one nice big one. Until it came to photographing them I didn't notice that I'd made the last four guys into two sets of chainsword twins, the quirks of design we sometimes subconsciously come up with can be quite interesting, don't you think?http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2013/6/23/509405_sm-.JPGhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2013/6/23/509404_sm-.JPGhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2013/6/23/509403_sm-.JPGhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2013/6/23/509402_sm-.JPGhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2013/6/23/509401_sm-.JPGhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2013/6/23/509400_sm-.JPGhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2013/6/23/509399_sm-.JPG]Death from the skies!http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2013/6/23/509398_sm-.JPGIn between trying to make myself finish those guys I have been attacking my ETL vow. The at times horrendously cold then bafflingly humid weather we've experienced here in the last few weeks has made it difficult to prime so while I was planning on getting the Fragioso out of the way first I had to start on the Honour Guard instead or risk falling behind,Here we have the two Honour Guard members in Corvus armour. Unlike the rest of the chapter where each squad is very uniform even down to chestplate I've decided that the Honour Guard have earned the right to wear unique suits of armour with plenty of adornments. Also, unlike the rest of the army so far, I've actually painted lenses for these guys. http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2013/6/23/509414_sm-.JPGhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2013/6/23/509413_sm-.JPGhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2013/6/23/509412_sm-.JPGhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2013/6/23/509411_sm-.JPG I haven't neglected the Fragioso, though, his talon/fist has been completed with a couple of minor conversions. I experimented with a flamer bit from a Puppets War walker arm inside the fist part to replace the external heavy flamer, but decided it wasn't obvious enough. However after making my Siege Dreadnought from the Forgeworld Ironclad kit I recognise that external fuel lines for such a weapon would be daft in the 41st millenium and figured they could very easily have an internal one running through the point of contact with the sort of forearm part, chopping off the fuel line happens to make it alot easier to attach, too. Also, chain blades http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2013/6/23/509407_sm-.JPGhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2013/6/23/509410_sm-.JPGhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2013/6/23/509409_sm-.JPGhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2013/6/23/509408_sm-.JPGGot to work on the base too. Decided to add a few large empty shell casings as it's going to sporting a Frag Cannon. There's a couple of smaller ones on the base you might spot to give you an idea of how big they are (thank you Zinge!).http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2013/6/23/509406_sm-.JPGThat's all folks, thanks for looking.Raz & marine7312000 - Cheers guys. That method of doing black is likely only going to be for the one-off models. As an experiment it was definitely worthwhile, but it just takes waaaaaay too long for me to start using it all the time. Plus all my other stuff is edge highlighted so it would be a bit of a weird switch. Partly inspired by some of the excellent fluff from a few posters recently I decided to add some of my own: Revered Castiel served for three centuries as Sergeant of the Second Company's Vanguard and under him this squad earned a fearsome reputation even within a chapter renowned for and dedicated to close combat superiority. Castiel was mortally wounded on the agri-world of Chiros with the Crimson Tears having finally forced the elusive Saim-Hann Eldar to fight following a long pursuit throughout the Segmentum Pacifcus. The Storm Raven carrying Castiel and his squad was ambushed as it streaked to catch up with Drop Pod insertions that had inexplicably launched ahead of schedule. As the Storm Raven pilots sought to crash land the veterans bailed out of the stricken transport right into the path of a flanking Eldar force the greatly outnumbered them. They fought a running battle against aspect warriors and guardians until they reached their downed Storm Raven, hoping that some of its ranged weapons might have survived its landing. Upon being met with mere wreckage Castiel instructed his brothers to expect nothing other than death, but to sell their lives so dearly that none of their pursuers might inflict any harm upon their nearby brothers. A bloody victory was carved out by the Crimson Tears that day with heavy losses sustained after Eldar sorcery played havoc with troop deployment, the consequence of which was that Castiel and the remains of his men would not be recovered for several days after the initial landing. He was found lying on the wrecked Storm Raven's wing, his armour pierced in many places and with one Eldar blade still lodged in his chest. Strewn for as far as the eye could see were Eldar corpses with the occasional black, white and crimson form of fallen battle brothers. All but one of Castiel's veterans died that day and he wept openly for their loss as Captain Sariel of the 6th Company congratulated him for the feats of his brothers, promising that their heroism would never be forgotten. Quite aside from becoming indelibly marked into the chapter's collective memory, combat logs from the fallen and Castiel's own first-hand account of how jump pack assaults and formation changes were utilised to break the enemy set a new benchmark in the chapter for combat doctrine and as much as he is now a weapon for war Castiel is also an invaluable font of knowledge to whom all sergeants of the chapter, even those not leading assault squads, continuously refer. He has admitted to chapter veterans seeking his guidance to missing his jump-pack, but that he greatly appreciates the exponential increase in damage output his walking tomb confers. The majority of his sarcophagus is black in remembrance of the brothers he lost on Chiros, while many of the battle honours adorning his armour incorporate wings or the aquila to denote his past as one of the chapter's most decorated Vanguard VeteransAnd here's a Death Korpsman I did for my Grey Knight Henchmen allies to break things up a little:http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2013/7/14/516735_sm-.JPGhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2013/7/14/516738_sm-.JPGhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2013/7/14/516739_sm-.JPGhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2013/7/14/516736_sm-.JPGSorry for the mammoth post, there's about 3 updates of stuff in this one, well done if you managed to power through it all and I appreciate you having a look. The Yak
Amazing work as always. Such a cool squad made up of great poses. I think the two powerfist chaps are my favorite. The dread is a beast. sockwithaticket
I'm back to tie up a few bits and pieces before I head off on my mini tour of Belgium and the Netherlands, couldn't let some of you lovely people have your comments go unanswered. Before that, though, I've got a couple of things I would like some input on:Here's a henchman I knocked out. There's a couple of things I'm not too sure about on him. 1) The face mask, I feel it needs to be something other than steel coloured, but I can't for the life of me think of anything different. 2) The shell casings - I used rhulic gold as a base because I've dulled that down quite well in the past, but it hasn't given me the rich brass I wanted. 3) The cuffs turned out a lot brighter and bluer than I thought, though they do look more subdued in real life. Thoughts on those three things? http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2013/8/13/527112_sm-.JPGhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2013/8/13/527113_sm-.JPGhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2013/8/13/527114_sm-.JPG I've also put together some bits for a Captain (yeah I know, BA Captain's are barely worth a thing...), but I can't for the life of me figure out what pose I like best. So here are some options1. http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2013/8/13/527115_sm-.JPG 2. http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2013/8/13/527117_sm-.JPG 3. http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2013/8/13/527116_sm-.JPG 4. http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2013/8/13/527122_sm-.JPG 5. http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2013/8/13/527118_sm-.JPG 6.http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2013/8/13/527119_sm-.JPGPoses 4-6 rest on whether you think this is an okay way to hold a sword when at resthttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2013/8/13/527121_sm-.JPGAnd here's his backpack, pretty happy with thishttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2013/8/13/527120_sm-.JPGEager to hear what you have to say, guys. Good luck to any of you with ETL vows outstanding. ColdWinter - Thanks so much, I'm certainly going to try and keep it coming.deathspectersgt7 - Cheers, man. I did get a little bit worried at one point that it wasn't going to happen and with such a small vow that would be pretty poor.Firepower - yeah, it's not going to be for everyone. Thing is I've seen some awesome conversions with those chain blades, but I wasn't ready to completely do away with the talons.Squeaky - thanks, fella. I'm not particularly handy with sculpting so individuality in my models has to come about through careful posing and it's always nice when people notice. The Yak and NightHUnters- Oh you two, always so complimentary. Yeah, I enjoyed doing the powerfist boys and like I said above it's always gratifying when you guys notice how much attention I've paid to posing them.Yak - Sorry to burst your bubble, but though the Crimson Tears intervention may come only when the situation is dire, it comes. I'm assuming you mean all the Dreads together rather than a dying vanguard veteran surround by a sea of dead eldar and marines because as much as I would like to do the latter I don't have the models (or the cash) so hopefully it was the former because that I can do:http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2013/8/13/527111_sm-.JPGNight Hunters - you mean like this?http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2013/8/13/527110_sm-.JPGIt might be a little way off yet, but it's a start. sockwithaticket
Not a big update, I've mainly been cutting, posing and priming stuff since I got back from my travels. When I have painted it's all been focussed on this guy:Epistolary Oriphielhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2013/9/4/534418_sm-.JPGhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2013/9/4/534419_sm-.JPGhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2013/9/4/534420_sm-.JPGhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2013/9/4/534421_sm-.JPGhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2013/9/4/534422_sm-.JPGhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2013/9/4/534416_sm-.JPGhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2013/9/4/534423_sm-.JPGhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2013/9/4/534424_sm-.JPGhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2013/9/4/534417_sm-.JPGAs the 2nd Company's jump libby I imagine him to be more of a warrior than his non-flying counter-part, likely to use Sanguine Sword over Prescience. With this in mind I've tried to bulk him out with his pads and right arm as Sevrin Loth is actually quite a small model, at the same time I've made his base quite tall to help not just the impression of his size but also to emphasise him and mark him out more as a leader.Over on the BA sub-forum Taranis has started up a painting competition to help motivate the sons of Sanguinius post-ETL and I've put in for this little lot:http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2013/9/3/534189_sm-.JPGHalf an assault squad and a jump Reclusiarch with powerfist. All the assault marines are going to be in Mk. 6 armour. Some of the constituent parts may change once my Sternguard, Vanguard and Tactical kits arrive this weekend/next week, but that's basically what I'll be painting. In the course of deciding what I had to paint I had to find some bases to put them on and decided to give myself a painting challenge and refer to B&C in the process. No one can have failed to notice the number of Night Lords on the board at the moment and I've always viewed their scheme as a tough one to do properly so here we have it, the Crimson Tears address both (apologies to Brother Heinrich, DarkVen et al) :http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2013/9/4/534426_sm-.JPGhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2013/9/4/534427_sm-.JPGhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2013/9/4/534425_sm-.JPGI've decided to theme the assault squad a little by adding a few other Night Lord parts to some of the bases including a busted rhino door for a meltagunner in the future to make it look like my squad attacked a Rhino and it's occupants.I also finally returned to doing a bit of work on my Angel Sanguine. He has weapons now!http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2013/9/4/534428_sm-.JPGhttp://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2013/9/4/534429_sm-.JPG That's all this time around. As ever, thanks for looking.Night Hunters - I have actually done some more to the Baal, but not enough to be worth posting. I changed a lot of the iconography on the front, including slapping a massive Angel on there. I'm waiting on a paint to try something new with robes before I start work on that. Should have something for the next update. NightHunters
What he said!! That sword is awesome! As us the rest of Loth to be fair! But the black side of the face mask, well it kind of disappears in then with the rest of the helmet.... Meh, nit picking!
