Imperial Fists WIP Thread

So here’s the latest pic of my Captain WIP after a few more bits of tweaking today.

I feel like the yellow is really starting to look the part, though I’ve still got to glaze him to smooth out the layers and then bring in a pure white highlight to really make the edges pop.

The part which is really troubling me is the sword, which I just don’t feel like I’m doing justice to. I need to really work on sorting out the highlights on there and some other lighting type effects to improve it.

Hope you like how it’s progressing so far, I’ve still got just under two weeks to work on this model so very much open to suggestions to improve it!

So, the verdict on Lamenter Yellow Glaze is a bit of a mixed bag:

As you can see, it has done a nice job of evening out the layer highlights to give a more blended effect.

The problem is that is has also given the armour a glossy sheen, not dissimilar to the old line of inks Citadel used to produce.

So now I will need to layer up all the yellow tones and redo all of the edge highlighting again.

I personally am very disappointed by the glaze, but for some I suppose it will be a nice tool for the arsenal.

On a different subject, any suggestions for colours for the gem on his forehead? I was thinking about blue, as purple makes him look like he has three eyes!

If you're top-coating your models with something like Testor's Dull Cote, the sheen of the ink all but disappears.

Another alternative to using a glaze product is to make your own! I've found that a nice mix of your mid tone and a little Future Floor Finish/Water mixture goes a long way in achieving the same thing as a glaze, but without the shine. Mixing Medium may have the same result, but as I've not run out of the one bottle of FFF I bought six years ago, I've no need to open the mixing medium.

For the gem on his forehead, I agree, though blue may be too many colors and make the model appear too busy. I was thinking red or green, but since you already have so much red I would go with green, though a different hue than the wreath and other adornments. Not different enough to contrast entirely, but different enough to make them stand out against the other green.
I think the blade looks good now, but if you are looking at a competition standard then I think you might need something else to add to it. It looks kinda plain with just the purple right now. Maybe some lightning? I also like the new blue helmet gem, though it doesnt look finished. Love the freehand details too, the little hand shield, the other shield on the front piece and shoulder for the robe. Keep it up!
  • 2 weeks later...

Wings of the Falcon, that's an outstanding idea putting detail on the back of the shield! The scanner looks great. I've had grenades mag-clamped to the back of storm shields, but an auspex...that I have to steal!

And that librarian is very nicely done too!

Cheers guys, I entered the Librarian in a painting contest at my local GW, but sadly he didn't place in the top three! Must try harder next time.

Next project is to either finish my Sternguard or to complete my Techmarine with conversion beamer on bike.
