Alpha Legion

Recommended Posts

Hey fellow boys and girls on B&C!

It's been quite some time since my last power armoured project, but when I reread LEGION a month or so ago, I was sold on doing my next.

I needed a truescale Marine army! Or maybe army is saying a bit too much, let's call it a task force.

So, what Codex should I use, was my next question. It was clear to me that truescale Marines are best represented by Terminator stats, but neither Lightning Claws, Powerfists nor Thunderhammers would really suit an Alpha Legionaire. Therefore the choice was made: Grey Knights!

Grey Knight Paladins are soooo expensive points-wise, so all I got at 1850 Points were mere 2 Squads of 10 with a character leading each of them. That meant I only had to build 22 models to play a game of 1850 - great :tu:

Furthermore, 2 wounds with Feel No Pain to me is what a Marine should really be like, fluff-wise. Also, Stormbolters and Psycannons in my opinion are perfect to represent "better" Bolters & Heavy Bolters.

The converting was actually done pretty quickly since I had some experience at building truescale Marines. Here's a teaser picture of things to come:

I'll start posting more pictures as soon as possible, the guy in the middle (aka Draigo) is being finished painting as I post this.

So long, :D

Might have to borrow this idea for when I finish my pre-heresy BA's.

I suppose they are kind of like "Movie Marines" - more what the fluff says a Marine should be like rather than GW's rules for them.

I'm going to keep an eye this - should be an interesting topic to follow!

Plus I like the idea for the list, hopefully you won't find people who have a problem with it.

I have played quite some games with my Legionaires... all of them were a lot of fun and my opponents (~10, both tournament and casual players) had no problems whatsoever with the Counts-As.

I guess that's because it is pretty clear which Marine carries which weapon. I tried to combine cool looks and WYSIWYG as much as possible :)

In addition, the look upon your opponent's face when he realises that he's only facing 22 (admittedly big) Marines is pretty funny... almost everyone is going to underestimate this list.

Heh, had an idea on the Alpha Legion forum about using the GK codex for making an Alpha Legion force months ago, never did anything with it though...

I'm glad to see someone did, and with better modelling-abilities than mine!

Looking forward to the result!

Alright B&C, here we go!

The pics are pretty bad because the weather outside sucks and I don't have the right equipment to set up a proper photobox...but I hope you'll get the idea with all the models ;) And yes, some of them are still missing a shoulderpad or two ^^

So it begins....

CE you never disappoint, this is amazing stuff!

I think the only thing I find annoying about your project is that you seem to be jumping onto projects that I'd love to do and before I can get to them. That's not your problem, it's mine. :)

I'm very excited that you are taking this concept and applying your usual incredible modeling/painting skills and turning it into something wonderful.

Bravo!

Cheers,

Thanks for all the praise, I really appreciate it!

@Honda: For me, new projects that I see online (especially when they're build around a similar idea to the one I have) are an ever greater motivation to start my own, so I wish you the best for your next undertaking, admittedly I'm quite the fan of your stuff since the first black&white Terminators showed up ^_^

It's going to be a pretty busy week so I don't have a lot of hope regarding updates - but I'll share anything with you that I think is worth a post.

On a playtesting note, the Alpha Legion Wing has not disappointed me so far. I have played about ~12 games (1 just the other day), and only lost 1 time and drew 3 others. With 4-5 Psycannons in a squad rerolling 1's to wound, you just have to point at an enemy unit and it falls over dead.

Aaand finally, what does the B&C think of the addition of more stuff? Any suggestions on what could be reasonable additions to the army?

I think the next things that should be added is definitely henchmen!

It would greatly serve well to make your Legionnaires awesome in comparison, and it also fits the Alpha Legion's MO...

Re: Termies <blushes> That's been awhile, now hasn't it.

Next steps:

I think a really interesting unit to model, which I planned on exploring is what I would consider the Scout equivalents, in chainmail armor, with middle Eastern head scarfs (not sure what they are called), wielding the falx and a bolt pistol. I'd have to think about where they would go in the FOC as I think they ought to be more than henchmen, so they could be Purifiers or possibly PAGKs.

From there, I'd look into a psyker squad for the battlefield effect, a librarian to represent Shere, and then some henchmen squads. I'd really like to play them like they came right out of the book, but that's me. What I like about this concept and why it intrigued me so much is that you can take it in a lot of different directions.

Anyway, I am very interested to see where you take this.

Cheers,

I added a Librarian instead of a Techmarine, I'll add a pic or two of him tomorrow, right along with his fluff. So at least the painting has begun and this thread is getting some more pictures ;)

Concerning the "What to add in next" question:

In Legion there are a lot of references on how AL Marines appear out of nowhere and how they are not affected by security scanners. To represent that, I'm going to playtest Mordrak a lot more than I already have, and so far he worked out great when accompanied by a Librarian.

And now...well...how should I say this...I want a Dreadknight! Just because I can deepstrike him right next to the Librarian in round 2 without scattering.

So I looked into the concept and found that I wouldn't want to do another Mechanicum robot, since 1. I already have 3 of those and 2. they don't quite fit the AL. My next thought was that I could use a Contemptor for the job.

So here's an initial sketch I came up with. The idea behind this is that the Dread is just throwing off a giant shroud that made him look like a veiled statue. To underline that impression he is going to be caked with chalk dust or whatever up to his waist to give the look of a stone/granite statue. It's a combination of the hidden IW Dread in "The Iron Within" and the veiled White Scars warriors in "Little Horus" if you will.

It's pretty rough but I guess you all get the idea :D

What do you think of it?

I checked with the Board and they have approved this project. Please proceed soonest, pending the release of funding. :D

I think that's a very cool idea. I've never envisioned dreads being part of the AL, they always seemed too big and noisy to me. But hiding one and then revealing it as part of an operation is a very slick idea.

I'm very much looking to see this materialize.

Alright, her he is, bad pic once more...

Librarian Holofern (Alpharius), the Snake, the Angel of Salvation

http://i1119.photobucket.com/albums/k630/jaycop313/DSCF3496.jpg

Many tales are told about Librarian Holofern, his myth spanning the width of the galaxy. Some say he is a loyal son of the Lion, a devout follower and brother of the Dark Angels chapter, wandering the galaxy to fight the Fallen and the Alien, proudly wearing the winged sword insignia of the Legion on his breastplate. Others say he is a Fallen himself, a servant of the Dark Gods that wears the armour of the angels simply to achieve his own, traitorous goals.

Every time he is seen on a backwater world his journey is accompanied by a record of anarchy and chaos, always ending in the suicide of a planet. If he is the agent that supports the uprisings and therefore lets the world kill itself, or if he is the one that quells the revolts even at the cost of an entire plante's population... One will never know.

With this, many mysteries remain... Who does the crushed Helm of the Dark Angel on his back belong to? A Fallen Holofern has struck down? The previous owner of this delicate suit of armour? Is it his own? If so, why the bloodied feathers?

Also, no common citizen of the Imperium has ever paid any attention to the chained -A- painted onto his left shoulderpad.

Maybe they should have...

Wow these guys are very awesome. Only thing I don't like is the Cherub on Alpharius personally. Everything else looks great. I think the dread hiding out would be an awesome idea. Will you give him the jump infantry thing though (forget what it's called)? If so how would you represent that?

Thanks for the feedback btw, now I just have to get a hold of a Contemptor - it's Christmas after all...

No I won't, a teleporting Dread doesn't really fit IMO. I'll just use him as a Dreadknight with Heavy Incinerator and hope that the Libby with a teleport homer survives the first round so I can drop the Dread in the 2nd trun right next to him ^_^
