Imperial Space Marine Outpost

Bought £35 worth of paints yesterday and finally picked up the courage to pick up the old paint brushes and start to paint.

Finished off one of the Assault cannons and then for a change, started to paint the skull. I started picking out the teeth, nose etc with bleached bone but stopped as it didn't look right. I previously painted skulls from a base coat of chaos black and then carefully painting skull white leaving a thin black outline around teeth, nose etc. Have any of you got any fool proof, realistic way of painting skulls, especially these inch high ones.

Small update:

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff118/philmorgan75/P1030316.jpg

Decided to go with an icy blue in the recesses rather than my normal way. I'm actually thinking of sprinkling a layer of snow all over the outpost. What do you think?

Finished some more painting:

Another weapon turret to be recessed into the corridor walls.

Here are the 2 titans:

Still plucking up courage to cut the cliffs, hangar and the rest of the pathways. I'm off work this week so I'm hoping to get some time to do this (after digging up the turf in the garden and laying shingle to replace this -why does the local council allow only 3 bags of soil/turf per household per week to be taken to the tip??). You can see at the top as well the black undercoated Outpost ready and primed!!

Close up of Titan 1. I'm not planning on doing any more to this SM other than dust it with some snow when the rest of the Outpost is finished.

Completed Titan 2.

Critiques please?

Some more progress made:

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff118/philmorgan75/P1030515.jpg

Here's the garage blast doors. The Imperial Eagle has been made from 1mm plasticard to stand proud of the blast door. I plan on having hurricane bolter sponsons either side of the doorway and flamers of some description above the doorway to keep would be attackers away.

You can also see to the left some extra weapons to be painted and attached (when finished) to my Large scale Space Marine on my other blog.

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff118/philmorgan75/P1030516.jpg

Here's a shot of the completed weapons to attach into the large skull eye sockets when I get around to sticking them on the cliff face, 10 Twin Heavy Bolters, 2 Twin Multi Meltas, 1 Lascannon and the 2 Hurricane Bolters to be used in the rear garage sponsons. I have 3 more Twin Multi Meltas, 3 Lascannon, 4 Twin Plasma Cannons and Twin Redeemer Flamers to finish painting. I have a few other weapons that can be used, but I'll see if the ones painted and to be painted are enough.

Comments/critiques welcomed.

Regards, Brother Morgan.

Very cool, I would suggest painting some black lines on the eagle where the gap between the two pieces is. Like they did for the arrow on this rhino (not mine):

Great minds think alike Verpine! What you can't see in the photo are the lines already scribed into the plasticard to match the zig-zag of the door. When painted, I'll be sure to emphasise the slight gap in the door.

Thanks for your comments, Brother Morgan.

Another timely update!

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff118/philmorgan75/P1030524.jpg

Finally motivated myself to cut out the pathways out of the foam and today started the task of sticking and plastering the first 2 layers of walkway. You can see from above what the entrance is going to partially look like. Enemies - eat Assault Cannons!!!When I finish the inside 3 layers, I will move onto the exterior - Cutting and adding foam and then adding the skull gun posts.

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff118/philmorgan75/P1030526.jpg

Here's a shot of the partially finished skull pathway from the first level down to the ground floor. The Space Marines when painted embedded into the walls will look like they have been carved out of the rock. Just a reminder to the visitors who built this outpost! I've added the Adeptus Mechanicus logo to show the close ties my Chapter have with the planet Mars.

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff118/philmorgan75/P1030527.jpg

This shows what the first floor landing looks like - an Imperial Eagle embedded into the floor and the 2 weapon turrets - Twin Heavy Bolter and Twin Heavy Flamers.

Providing the plaster is dry tomorrow, I plan to give the exposed foam a quick wash of PVA glue in the gun emplacements (just so the paint sticks to it) and then move onto the third layer.

Regards, Brother Morgan.

Decided to paint the bottom 2 interior layers before sticking the 3rd layer:

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff118/philmorgan75/P1030533.jpg

The white patch below the Imperial Eagle is some more plaster to enclose the Assault Cannon turret in. Once dry, I'll paint and highlight as with the rest of the rock.

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff118/philmorgan75/P1030534.jpg

Now that the Space Marines have been drybrushed, I think they look like they have been carved out of the surrounding rock.

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff118/philmorgan75/P1030531.jpg

Shot of the first level with the Imperial Eagle on the floor and Space Marines and Crux Terminatus finished.

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff118/philmorgan75/P1030532.jpg

This shot shows the 2nd pathway in place and the walls leading down to the ground floor. Once the PVA is dry, I'll put a thin layer of plaster on the 2nd level walls and paint before moving onto the 3rd and final layer.

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff118/philmorgan75/P1030535.jpg

Final shot today of the blastdoors for the garage. I plan on somehow having Hurricane Bolters either side of the doorway and in the rock overhang above, flamers to discourage any would be visitors.

I'm very happy with how this is turning out. I just need to get some snow scatter. Any suggestions of brand?

Regards, Brother Morgan

Some more progress on the outpost:

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff118/philmorgan75/P1030538.jpg

The first floor landing almost finished-just need to paint the vent and the fans and attach a painted chainsword to the left arm of Sgt Centurius.

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff118/philmorgan75/P1030539.jpg

Shot showing both walkways. I decided to repaint the skull walkways to match the surrounding rock walls. In the top right hand corner, you can see what I decided to do for the second floor landing - a frag grenade minefield and a Twin Multi Melta weapons turret. The stairs you see in the top right hand corner lead to ......

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff118/philmorgan75/P1030541.jpg

this!!!!!

I just need to paint the lascannons, heavy flamer and the heavy bolters and the front side will be complete - 3 more to go!

I'm toying with painting small amounts of verdigree, dribbling from each bolt - what do you think?

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff118/philmorgan75/P1030537.jpg

I also started on the front exterior rock face today. I need to shave/round the top off and when the polyfilla is dry, I'll paint it as per the interior. I think the Blood Red on the weapons that will be poking out of the skull eye sockets will contrast really well with the rock. I've added some frag grenade mines dotted around the rock wall as another deterrant.

What other offensive and/or defensive weaponry do you think a Space Marine Outpost would be armed with?

Regards, Brother Morgan.

Love the entrace way and the hallway! the SMs on the walls really give it the grimdark feel, along with all the skulls of course. Your painting and shading looks great as usual as well. Only suggestion might be some brown washes on the exterior wall for some dirt after you finish the rock?

Looking good Brother, as mentioned by AndrewJ a couple of washes would not go amiss but tell me brother, those aren't actual Rogue Trader era marines pressed in the walls? Are they? Please for the love of god?

Sorry, just saw the earlier images, press moulds?

Thanks for the comments guys. In answer to one of your questions, I am planning on "dirtying" the bottom of the cliffs after I finish the exterior paint job. I'm thinking of using some Forgeworld weathering powders but want some feedback from others before I purchase.

I also want to use snow scatter so I have to take this into account with how much weathering I may or may not do.

Back to the painting!

This is fantastic. I wish I had thought of this use of my RT marine doubles. All the RT marines and the transition marine with plasma pistol and chainsword that you are using to show scale make me wonder if you are doing all this in my basement...

Update time:

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff118/philmorgan75/P1030542.jpg

I've only undercoated the rock face and skulls. Highlights need to be completed and the frag grenade launchers/mines need to be painted to finish off this view. I'll stick the weapons in the eye sockets to finish off the outpost. I've almost finished 2 sides now. I've already prepped the rear rock face with some extra polystyrene rock outcrops and hope to start on this tomorrow.

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff118/philmorgan75/P1030543.jpg

A view from the front. Highlights and mines to be finished.

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff118/philmorgan75/P1030546.jpg

A shot of some of the features. I've put a hidden escape hatch (seems a bit un-space marine like but realistic when building a stronghold/outpost) and a waste pipe. Extra frag grenades have been placed around the entrance to deter would be visitors. I hope to paint green algae, rust etc dripping down the rock face from the waste pipe. I'm thinking about getting some water effects or maybe PVA glue?? to help achieve this.

I'm still deciding what to do with the top of the rock. I have some skyshield Aegis defence shields that I'm thinking of lining the perimeter with as added protection for any space marine on patrol. I should have a few spare twin heavy bolters that can be used as extra weapons for even more defensive fire power.

Back to making more skulls to attach the the 2 remaining rock faces.

Regards, Brother Morgan.

Finished the rear construction:

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff118/philmorgan75/P1030549.jpg

Need to move onto the rockface above the blast doors over the next couple of days and then the final side. I have 27 skulls attached so far along the different rock faces, so I have to go back to converting and painting more weapons!

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff118/philmorgan75/P1030550.jpg

This shows a work in progress on the Large Lascannon on the top of the fortress. I'm thinking of adding legs to form a tripod like structure to the base of the weapon.

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff118/philmorgan75/P1030551.jpg

A shot of the 99% finished front view of the fortress. I've painted the spotlights white and the entrance lights blue. Just need to make a step to get into the entrance and this side will be finished.

http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff118/philmorgan75/P1030552.jpg

Just to finish off tonight, as suggested in the last update here's a shot of some extra protection for the foot patrol. I'm debating this. What do you think?

Regards, Brother Morgan.
