I got the parts to finish the squad of Berserkers. Here's progress on the first guy. Still waiting on the last few parts for the terminator but I do have both arms done now. Still trying to figure out what to do weapon wise for the left arm.

Not much progress so I thought I would do a tutorial on how I paint my red for anyone interested.

First off this can be done on either a white or black base-coat. You could even use your base red if you had it in spray form, would cut back on the first 3 steps. I don't and I generally prefer using a white base-coat myself. Also it tends to be a tad brighter on the white base-coat then black.

http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/kk213/x2005eig/RedPart1.jpg

1. Thinned down coat of Red Gore (I think, I use a vallejo paint and the label is wore off.) Make sure you get all the cracks, etc.

2. Thinned coat of Red Gore again. Neither coat has to be very clean as you will be going over it multiple times.

3. Wash of Baal red. This smooths out the texture and helps cover any missed areas.

http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/kk213/x2005eig/RedPart2.jpg

4. Fairly heavy wash of Asurmen Blue. I don't thin it at all as I like nice dark contrasts. If coverage isn't great go over some areas when they dry to ensure all edges/cracks are covered.

5. Thin coat of Red Gore. Cleans up the wash. Make sure to avoid area's of shading etc.

6. Thin coat of Red Gore. Same as above. You can leave a little edge between the two layers to futher enhance the shading.

http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/kk213/x2005eig/RedPart3.jpg

7. Go over all the edges with a 75/25 mix of Red Gore and Golden Yellow (Again my yellow is a vallejo color with a worn label but I believe its Golden Yellow)

8. Final thin hi-light of 50/50 Red Gore and Golden Yellow. At this point the model will seem more orangish then red.

9. Even wash of Baal Red. This dims the previous Hi-light, helps to blend the layers together and also adds a bit of reddish tint to the blue wash in the shaded areas.

Hope this makes sense.

Cheers

First of all, this is stunning work.

You really know how to make a character instead of just a model, if that makes any sense.

Every single one is unique and very rich in detail, and they look wicked awesome.

Also, I very much like the way you paint.

That vibrant red with its blueish shadows goes incredibly well with the very high contrast of the gold, while you seem to keep the rest of the model rather muted and simple in order to not distract the eye and prevent the model from looking overloaded.

Apart from that, your painting skills are amazing, showing in the incredibly clean work of the whites and flesh areas as well as the sweet freehands.

I'm very tempted to try my hand at copying some of your work if you wouldn't mind.

Not that I really think I actually can, but I'd like to give it my best shot.

Concerning the tutorial how to paint that incredible red however, I just can't believe that colour is really a Red Gore equivalent.

It looks much too bright on the pictures to be the sinister, wine-red, badly covering Red Gore I know.

Or am I underestimating the effect that white basecoat has on the color? You said it could be done on black, too, but mine looks very different.

I know you said the label wore off, but could you maybe but up a picture of the bottle or anything else helpful to find out what it is exactly? (Game Color, Model Color, Model Air?)

I tried this recipe with what I had at hand (GW Red Gore, thinned old Red Ink, Regal Blue wash, VLC Lemon Yellow), and though I clearly saw the method works, all three attempts went south.

(I also knocked over my Red Gore pot, but that's just me being silly. :D )

Keep up the great work, brother Overdrive.

I'll be sure to follow this thread closely. :D

Thanks for the positive words. I've got most of the remaining bits for my terminator but I haven't worked on him yet. Instead I've finished another Berserker.

@Uzhuul: Thank you for the compliments and you are more then welcome to mimic my work. I think one of the main reasons for starting a log is to help inspire others. As far as the paint is concerned, I'm about 90% sure its the Vallejo Game color equivalent of Red Gore. I stuck a pic up for comparison. I hope your future attempts at the color go well.

@Rune Priest Ridcully: Sorry I didn't respond previously. As far as suggestions go, I think a big thing is have a good idea of what you want to do with the model before you start cutting. Its an expensive set of bits to have anything go wrong with :). If you have anything specific please feel free to PM me.

Update time:

Finished this running Marine, I'm really pleased with how he turned out:

I went and bought the Forgeworld Khorne Terminator set. Really happy that I did, the shoulder pads are excellent pieces.

Cheers!

First off, thank you for that tutorial on the red. Very nice, I would have never thought of using Asurmen Blue to create more depth. I'll be trying that out, thanks! Second, the new Berzerker is stunning...well posed and brutal looking, very dynamic, bro. One thing though...there is a vicious mold line running through the right shoulderpad man, might want to watch out for that. Other than that tiny detail, gorgeous as always.

Thank you for the quick reply, Overdrive.

You were right about the color, it must be a Red Gore equivalent or at least extremely close. It was just the black basecoat that made my attempts look so different, but priming in white does the trick.

I could upload a picture or two if anyone wants to see what the GW variant looks like, but it doesn't seem necessary.

I am very excited. I'm not there yet, but I'm getting closer and closer to actually pulling it off.

Thank you very much for that tutorial, it may just make the difference to my World Eaters.

On your update, well...

You seriously took terminator legs, those motionless and static things, and made them into a running marine. And an awesome one at that.

Never thought I'd see that happen.

One thing though: Maybe it's just me, but the side-plates at his hips as well as the backpack seem a bit "disconnected" for want of a better description to me.

I immediately thought of adding some gold to them to visually tie them to the model a tad more.

Also the skin seems a but too clean and uniform, I think a subtle facial tattoo would fit really well there.

And what is going on with his eyes? :)

Please keep in mind these points are nothing but purely subjective matters of opinion, and even then just nitpicking on an excellent model.

Except for that little mould line on his right shoulder, but what the hell.

Amazing job on that marine, brother.

Also a pic of the 5 (almost) finished to date. I'm also rebasing Khârn to fit in with the squad.

  • 2 weeks later...

Unfortunately this isn't a progress post. I'm in between both jobs and houses right now so all my gaming stuff has been packed up until I have a new workspace available to me. I thought I would leave you with this group shot I took while packing the old place.

I think I love you ( in a totaly hetero jealous of all your skill and talent type of way)

I need you to help me fix my models ( so yeah, any ideas how to do a good collar of khorne? A la your 1 face tattooed dude, also any how to's for your gore child? As in what chain blade's teeth did you use?) I thought I was doing okay but holy schnikey.

Sorry as always I was late to the party, congrats On sheer balls out awesomeness.

Just stumbled across this thread, and wow! I'm lost for words that others have already said!

Your skills are great, and I thank you for the red tutorial! Red was a always a weird color for me to paint, and I think I can replicate yours with a fair outcome.

Can't wait to see more!
