Relic Contemptor

Here are some initial pics of an Angel Sanguine, relic contemptor. I'm working on how to magnetize the arms to allow weapon swaps. There's not a lot of material to work with to that effect so I'm experimenting with a few approaches. If anyone has done this before I'd certainly be open to suggestions. I currently have one each of the two assault arms and a conversion beamer (the beamer just seems to especially fit this model).

Otherwise, the base is pretty well modeled up and going to be fun to paint.

The legs aren't set yet. I'm still playing around with the pose.

More soon. Cheers, -OMG

Hey dude, I love Contemptors!!! I can't wait to see how this develops. Concerning magnetizing the weapons (theres a couple of pics in the second half of my DAs in my sig) I've been using 3mmx1mm magnets in the hinge to elbow swivel joint. I've also been considering multiple magnets in the shoulder socket to increase posability for different weapon types, as you'll have distinctly different positions for ccw arms than for other types.

Cheers,

Jono

Thanks gents.

@Grotsmasha (so is that grot smasha or grots masha? I guess it might depend on how hungry you are): I saw your thread & by Google standards, the best I've found on magnetizing contemptor arms. Can you show a pic of how you mounted the magnet in the assault hand bits? I can see how it works for the dreadknight hand but any detail you can provide on other swaps would be very helpful.

Priming the base as I type (well thereabouts) so more soon.

Thanks again. Cheers, -OMG

Hey, I couldn'd find the arm that is completely magnetized, so heres a sketch that shows how to switch the Storm Bolter/Plasma/Flamer

If you dont have magnets yet, 2mm diametre will be strong enough and make the wrist to hand connection much easier { I had to "shape" the part of the hand that fits into the wrist to get my 3mm to fit. Also remember to magnetize the exterior bits ammo box/power supplies.

Cheers,

Jono

Edit: its grot smasha :tu:

Hello again: Here's a quick update. Note that none of this is finished. Lots more work on the body, gore, other stuff, the dread itself. Lots of stuff.

Thanks for looking. Cheers, -OMG

Is funny I havent seen your topic yet until today, and yet we are both working on the same thing. I am also working on a relic contemptor that is going to be stepping on an ork. Only difference is I am going to have mine pinning the ork in place on the ground and giving him the middle finger (I love how poseable the contemptor kit is). I was wondering if you pined the legs at all to keep the pose until the glue set or if you just held it in place?

The base is beautiful, the weathering is sublime and is that a death mask I spy on his leg?

What's your weathering technique, again it's superb

Thanks for the comments all. Always appreciated.

I couldn't agree more about the versatility of the model. I've been finding that GW models in general are getting less poseable. Nice to see FW raising the bar in the opposite direction. I hope it catches on. And no, I didn't pin the legs. It took some doing & the use of some expletives that I normally avoid in mixed company, but I just held it in place until the glue set. Given the, "step up" position, I had to give it several dry runs to get positioned right. I marked off and set the feet first which gave me the stability to put the other pieces where I wanted them. Still, there's some slop where the ball joints meet the hip. It's masked by the paint so a forgivable bit of slop (at least I'm forgiving myself) regardless.

The weathering uses a few basic techniques that are really simple to assemble as I've done here.

The "worn" sections are created by wet brushing - for those not familiar it's very similar to dry brushing but the goal isn't to create an even blended effect like dry brushing can achieve. You load the brush with paint and wipe off most of it but not entirely. This will leave an uneven and therefore blotchy edge that gives the same effect as a highlight but also the suggestion that the paint has worn thin in those areas. Like dry brushing, you start with a color that very close to your base and work your way lighter. You use less paint at each layer so it builds up at each step while leaving the underlying layer visible. The more you use it the more you get a feel for how much paint to use at each step.

The chips & scratches come from the use of a metallic paint/ink recipe (which I can share if you're really interested) which creates a color that's a shade darker than bolt gun metal grey. The ink again creates a less even coat thus adding the illusion of depth which is enhanced by a stippled application. Finish that with some strokes of mithirl silver to show where the scratch bit down to base metal and it completes the picture.

Sorry for the long winded reply but I'll elaborate more on any of this if anyone's interested.

+++Edit: And yes, that is a death mask on the leg. An image I really like form the new BA line and perfect for just such an application.

Sorry, slow going - too much real life getting in the way. So, just a quick update. Still haven't magnetized the arms yet.

Hopefully more soon. -OMG
