Spiny Norman
Hi all, I bought a Rhino kit with no box from Ebay recently, and it was delivered wrapped up in brown parcel tape. My fears were realised when I removed the tape and it left residue all over the kit... I have got most of it off now, but there are still sticky/tacky patches that I cannot get rid of. I've tried various household chemicals to get to where I have, but I am reluctant to try anything much "stronger" without a recommendation as I don't want to ruin my Rhino! So, do any of you have any suggestions of what I could use to clean my rhino? I'm thinking something like nail varnish remover next, but I thought (tested on a bit of sprue first) I would try here bofore I do anything else. Thanks in advance for your help! winterdyne
Methylated spirits may do the job. Used those to clean tape off glass before, and it doesn't attack plastic IIRC. ShinyRhino
Have you tried rubbing alcohol yet? Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/248001-cleaning-plastic-kits/#findComment-3003535 Share on other sites
Subtle Discord
As with paint, a Simple Green soak might do the trick as well. I'm also assuming that you've tired a fresh piece of tape to try and 'pull off' the residue? Ironwulf
I would try rubbing alcohol first, then a quick scrub with Simple Green. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/248001-cleaning-plastic-kits/#findComment-3003904 Share on other sites
Res Ipsa Loquitur
Vinegar always works for me. The type you put on your chips/fries. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/248001-cleaning-plastic-kits/#findComment-3003905 Share on other sites
Studio Silvernale
I use denatured alcohol and a Q-tip. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/248001-cleaning-plastic-kits/#findComment-3003923 Share on other sites
chromedog
I use a citrus based gum remover that works well - removes all of the stickyness of any kind of tape or sticky label. The essential oils in lemon and certain other citrus has proven extremely effective at the task. Stercus
Don't use nail varnish remover. Most products contain the same chemical solvent as is used in citadel plastic glue and other polystyrene adhesives. Basically, it will melt your plastic models quite severely. Stolid Fox
Have you tried the bath approach? Force it to soak in something like a water/simple-green mix for 24 hours and that may help. Also, perhaps you might try "goo gone" ( http://www.googone.com/ ) or an equivalent -- now I've never used the product on models but it is designed to remove gunky residues. I might try it on sprue first to test for safety. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/248001-cleaning-plastic-kits/#findComment-3004982 Share on other sites
Heru2012
Yup, I use white spirits/ rubbing alcohol to clean sticky tape residue off of glass. Should work on plastics too. Unless you use acetone-free nail polish remover, like I do, then plastic models will be fine so long as you don't leave them in it for longer than half an hour or so. madscuzzy
Lighter fluid works wonders on glues... do try it! Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/248001-cleaning-plastic-kits/#findComment-3005202 Share on other sites
Subtle Discord
Be careful to test these suggestions on a hidden spot of the model first. Substances like lighter fluid are solvents, and will have a good chance of melting styrene. Spiny Norman
Thanks SD, I was planning testing anything I'm not sure about on a bit of sprue or something first.
