Kierdale
I thought I'd make a thread for the various objective markers and other stuff I'm making, for advice, ideas and feedback.First up is a crate of Lacrymata (from the novel Deathwing). And, as I'd like to have a game of Cities of Death sometime...A command center (or observation point) made from some leftovers I chose not to put on a LSS and some bits I scavenged from a wrecked VCR (which will also provide the guts for quite a few other markers and terrain pieces). And the first of six booby trap markers. From the `front`And the back, revealing a frag duct-taped to the wall, with a trip-wire lashed around a knife stuck in the ground.C&C welcome...plus suggestions for other booby traps http://bolterandchainsword.com//public/style_emoticons/#EMO_DIR#/smile.gif Edited January 27, 2021 by Kierdale Battybattybats, Llagos_Tyrant, reckoning and 1 other 4 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/250400-terrain-and-objectives-necron-building-kit/ Share on other sites
Brother Cambrius
Very nice work here. Always love to see custom made objective markers and terrain. <EDIT> In my shame I now only notice the grenade hidden behind the strip of metal on the trip wire. Now it makes a lot more sense and I love it. Nice work! Keep it up! Headologist
These are beautifully done, really like the trip wire grenade! Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/250400-terrain-and-objectives-necron-building-kit/#findComment-3035579 Share on other sites
Kierdale
Thanks Cambrius and Headologist! Cambrius, I did see your original comment and you do have a point. I have another similar ruined-doorway base made and I think I'll increase the amount of boom attached to it so it looks better. I have one full-doorway which I'm thinking about modeling a laser-beam across it to a mirror, all wired to an overhead bomb. Brother Cambrius
That sounds really nice Kierdale! I look forwards to seeing that terrain piece. Maybe a pair of Melta Bombs combined with 2 Frag grenades strapped together might work for the big boom above? :tu: Cambrius Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/250400-terrain-and-objectives-necron-building-kit/#findComment-3036276 Share on other sites
Kierdale
Thanks Brother Cambrius, I've got a spare melta bomb so I think I'll go with that for the over-the-door booby-trap. I've finished another tripwire one (didn't see the need to post a photo as it's pretty much the same), and this one... from one side: But should you step on it (or perhaps move that slab): KABOOM!!! It sets off a mine (actually a switch from the aforementioned VCR). Kierdale
Been busy with my 1kSons but when I've needed a break from red I did a few more terrain pieces... First up an objective marker for using when I play against Necrons (there being about 3 players who field then in my area). I got the idea from a post on From the Warp. I would like to link to it but I've looked and just can't find it again! Might do a few more as I like how it turned out (and have lots of spare sprue). And then two more booby-traps. First the laser-across-the-door one, linked to a demo-pack above. And one inspired by (IIRC) Full Metal Jacket... Currently working on another objective marker: a marine's grave/shrine, inspired by Heru2012's one HERE. Pariah Mk.231
Ah, the insidious teddybomb, one of the most diabolical traps ever devised. I also quite like the laser tripwire in the doorway, though it feels like it should be lower on the frame (to make it harder to see by anyone unfortunate enough to walk through a free standing doorframe ... though I suppose if they were that dumb they had it coming). Kierdale
Nothing particularly inspirational to post, just progress. Been busy with my 1kSons but while waiting for stuff to dry I slowly painted up my Aegis line's quad guns. I was originally going to remove the Aquilas and do it all in crimson and gold but then thought that I might, in the future, start up other armies (who has only one?) and so thought it best to keep it neutral. Hence grey and metal, with Aquila left complete. Clearly some bum graffiti'd on the side...and someone else numbered the energy readings so the gunner can remember which is monitoring which barrel... Must get the rest of the line done now, then perhaps back to some objective markers when my Book finally arrives... Kierdale
My first attempt at using Tamiya Clear Red for gore (inspired by Lonewolf's excellent tutorial on the B&C HERE). Though I don't have a chaos army, with the new codex out I expect this might get some use... I decided to make an objective marker of a chaos star daubed in blood. It ran into the crevices between paving stones nicely, but I think I painted the star itself a bit too thickly. I'll try another sometime and do it more spindly. Perhaps a Khorne symbol on a wall...could do some blood dribbling down the wall too... And started some destroyed vehicle markers (as per a tutorial HERE), buying some tea candle lights from the local 100 yen store and chopping off the moulded plastic flames. The LEDs themselves were set a bit deep in the base so I raised them, wanting them to illuminate the cotton wool better, and glued them in place poking out fully. Now to glue on the wool and spray them (grey and black)... Kierdale
Did get cotton wool glued to one of the explosion-markers. Didn't get chance to spray it this weekend. Perhaps next. Did get a start on a lot of new terrain including some hills and ruins. Having just moved to a new apartment and bought new furniture I ended up with a lot of styrofoam packing...perfect for making some hills. They've now had their edges covered with sand and after painting will get flocked. Pictures once there's something worth showing. As for the ruins, I got inspired by someone's work on the B&C (sadly it was quite some time ago and I don't remember their name) about making sectional ruins. Basically make corner pieces as triangles, and further triangles which can be inserted as flooring-sections, allowing you to make a variety of sizes of building. Hopefully these pictures will explain... Four triangles at the top: building corners. 3" x 4" (using the 3-4-5 triangle keeps measurements simple). Two large triangles at the bottom: together as a square they make the inside of the building if all the templates are used. Alternatively two corner templates can be used to make one small building. All cut out and put together. Added a porch to one corner section, just big enough for a 40mm base. Alignment probably won't matter much in the end but since I intend to pave the inside of the building I thought it'd help to label what-goes-where on the bottom of the templates. Just in case. Taped them all together so I can glue the `paving stones` in place without anything slipping. An interlude to show the prototype. This one doesn't have the paved interior, and I used some thick-grain sand/stuff collected from the beach. I think with the actual model I'll stick with fine sand and debris made from broken up cork. The door will also have a door-frame, windows window-frames. Turned over the taped templates and paved it. The empty square toward the bottom-right will be simply a missing stone. That and the gaps between blocks will be sand-and-debris filled (though I'm waiting until I've got the walls up too and then do all the sand -sprinkling at once). The frame toward the lower-left will be a hatch to a basement, with a lid added later, a bit skewed so as to show the darkness beneath. Painted up metallic and rusty. The cork boards (six for a hundred yen. Cheap!) which will be cut/torn up to form the walls. Before I glue the walls in place I'll be cutting the templates apart again (cutting from the reverse-side). Working quickly as I need the terrain for a game at the end of the month. Further decoration (on the walls, adding a second floor, etc) will have to wait for later (and perhaps a second building). Kierdale
And I got the walls done. Will add a sand scattering and debris before painting. If I have time I'll add graffiti and/or a poster/other details. Suggestions welcome! Here's the full set together: And a couple of small buildings made with pairs: Or alternatively half a building, the rest of it presumably demolished: Noserenda and Llagos_Tyrant 2 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/250400-terrain-and-objectives-necron-building-kit/#findComment-3209056 Share on other sites
Brother Kovash
There's some amazing work going on in here. The chaos star has to be my favorite, very unique idea. My friends and I always just use dice as objectives, but after seeing these we might have to start coming up with some other ideas. Kierdale
Thanks all! I'm doing it all on the cheap (if I'm going to spend money I'd rather spend it on miniatures): the base card is the most expensive part. The rest is all from the ¥100-shop (glue, cork boards and the grey paint I'll be using). The buildings won't look as good as GW's ones, I'm sure, but I figure they can represent lower-class buildings. Pre-fab stuff and the like. Can't always fight around fancy architecture :) Plus I can always add to it in the future. Hopefully I'll have time to get some painting done on the buildings and hills later this week. Will post photos when I have. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/250400-terrain-and-objectives-necron-building-kit/#findComment-3209914 Share on other sites
Kierdale
The ruined building got basecoated and inked today (used up a fair bit of Nuln Oil. I guess the cork was thirsty). I'll pick up some Longbeard Grey this weekend to drybrush it. I did get one of the destroyed vehicle markers completed and I think it turned out well: Light off Light on Looks even better in the dark And with sarge' in there on scale-duty Sprayed it at first with grey, from the bottom-up, then afterwards with black. I have another tea candle-light so I can make another. If there is any advice or comments about this one, I'll try to incorporate it into the next one. And one of the dirty-but-quick hills I did. Another two on the way (though I may flock the slopes of them too). Kierdale
Thanks, Reckoning34. I finished painting my Aegis line for a planetstrike game today, but it was something of a rush-job so I won't post photos here. It's tabletop-worthy, but not something to look at closely. I did get my modular building finished though. Here are some shots of it... And some close ups: Someone got executed... Someone's pistol ran dry...and they lost an arm... A final close up of the poster. A fellow member over on the Boot Camp sent me some PDFs with posters and labels that a member here on the B&C had made...though the Boot Camp'er didn't know the artists name. If anyone out there recognises who did it, please tell me. It's fantastic work. Working on some 2-storey buildings now...
