HOWTO: Magnetize these Daemon Prince wings:

So I wanted to magnetize my Daemon Prince to make it easier to disassemble and transport. But I didn't want to spend a lot of time cutting, fitting magnets, and modelling green stuff. Looking at the wings, I noticed they have a nice long, straight bit that pokes into the back for attaching. And lo and behold - using Measurements and Science we can see that this part of the wing is *just* thick enough to house a long (3/8"), thin (1/16"!) rod style magnet.

So here's what I did!

1. Get some magnets. I purchased a bunch of different shapes and sizes to experiment, but for this I used a 3/8" long by 1/16" wide rod magnet for the wing and a bigger 9/16" by 3/16" disc magnet inside the Daemon Prince body.

You may be able to use a 1/2" long rod magnet in the wing. I'm not sure - I didn't want to drill too far and risk wrecking the model.

I got my magnets from here http://www.kjmagnetics.com . Maybe you're lucky and have a store near you that sells rod magnets.

2. Drill a hole in the wing stud. I started with a small pin vice bit to get the right depth and then widened it with a 1/6" drill bit.

Here's what it looks like when you're done:

3. Fit the rod magnet into the wing stud. Warning: Once you get it in there it might not come out again! So be sure you have the polarity right.

4. Put the disc magnet in the body (I also tried a 1/4" thick disc for the body, but it would require some cutting/modification to fit).

Taadaa! Now you have magnetized wings that are easy to remove and transport :P

(it's seamless!)

Q&A
Is the magnet connection extremely strong?'

No. If you shake the model around the wings will fall off. So if you're looking for a VERY strong connection that's tough to remove this may not work. You may want to try fitting a 1/2" rod magnet into the wing to see if that's any stronger (I avoided that because I didn't want to damage the model), or you may want to try buying some N52 grade magnets instead of the standard N42 grade that most magnets come in (I am not sure how much stronger this would be).

BUT - you can easily pick up the model and move it around without losing the wings. That's good enough for me.

Hopefully this is useful for any of you that want to avoid lots of cutting and greenstuff.
