Dark Rage
Very nice group shot, a very cool looking force you got there and those snipers will make a great addition. Great stuff! Bryan Blaire
facmanpob, I really like all your stuff, the darkened metal armor really looks nice against the red on your entire force. You have an awesome army there (although I still think your Whirlwind is weird ;) ). But it looks great for a conversion! Really like the new snipers, Ithink they look like a really good PA/carapace armor hybrid and I actually like the solid red camo cloaks, gives me the impression that the camo ability is something they can turn off and on with the cloaks. Very cool! Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/252082-guardians-of-the-covenant-and-first-legion/page/15/#findComment-3509894 Share on other sites
facmanpob
Thanks guys, much appreciated! :tu: Bryan, you just can't let the WW lie, can you? ;) You are right though, it isn't a great missile launcher turret. There's a Puppetswar missile turret that I have my eye on that I'll replace it with eventually. :P the current turret will then form part of a sentry gun system that I've got planned :) Just painted 10 WFB dwarfs to reset my painting head, and now it's onward and upward with my Legion Apothecary and Predator :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/252082-guardians-of-the-covenant-and-first-legion/page/15/#findComment-3509924 Share on other sites
Bryan Blaire
 Nope! I think if you actually added a second set of launchers on there outside the two already mounted, it would probably look good. I think it's just the lack of bulk. Regardless of that, it's painted up fantastically, just like everything else. facmanpob
Onwards and upwards…. I'm currently working on the start of my First Legion 30K force, so a few early teasers will follow. The Snipers painted and posted earlier are actually the first unit in the 30K force, acting as a Legion Reconnaissance Squad. I've vowed them, plus a Predator and Apothecary, in the L&T event currently running in the wip and HH sub-forums. The list is loosely based around the force of 200 veterans taken by the Lion to the Forge world of Diamat in the novel Fallen Angels. Why? Well, a number of reasons….. 1) it's a good back-and-forth combat story; 2) it takes place in between the events of Isstvan III and Isstvan V, so it is right in the early phase of the Heresy; 3) The First Legion clash with one of my other favourite Legions, the Sons of Horus, allowing more modelling opportunities; 4) the DA get to resupply for 2 weeks from a Class-I Ultra Forge following on from their initial combat against traitor Imperial Army, so while heavy armour isn't featured in the book, I have an excuse for incorporating all sorts of equipment in the army, including Mechanicum forces and non-standard issue wargear. Anyway, on with the fluff…. Shortly after Isstvan III, Primarch Jonson of the First Legion led a secret raid on the Forge World of Diamat, in the Tanagra system, Eriden sub-sector. The Forge World lay on the fastest stable warp route between the Isstvan system and Terra, and contained vital war supplies the traitor forces would need. Securing the Forge could tip the balance of the war, but was there an ulterior motive in the actions of the Legion?…. Strike Force Tanagra consisted of two elements: a naval element led by the Battle Barge Invincible Reason providing orbital support and overwatch to a ground force (Battle Force Alpha), tasked with taking and holding the Primary Forge on Diamat. Battle Force Alpha consisted of 200 veteran marines, led by the Lion himself, and supported by at least one Contemptor class Dreadnought, Brother Titus, and an undefined composition of offensive and support vehicles and aircraft. The 200 marines were deployed in two companies, 1st and 2nd Companies, each of 100 veterans. The initial plan was for Primarch Jonson to remain onboard the Invincible Reason to coordinate and run naval and ground operations simultaneously, but with the arrival in theatre of the Sons of Horus, the orbital position became untenable and the Lion moved his flag planet-side, whilst Invincible Reason withdrew with the remaining strike force starships. ORBAT - (Horus Heresy Army list equivalent unit name in parenthesis after the rank as it appeared in the book Fallen Angels) Leading the Battle Force was the Commander of 1st Company, Force Commander (Praetor) Lamnos. His 2i/c was the Commander of 2nd Company, Captain (Centurion) Hsien. Outside of the command chain, but occupying a senior advisory role within the force, was Brother-Redemptor (Consul Chaplain) Nemiel. In addition, two apothecaries are recorded as being present (Brother Gideon and an unnamed second), as well as a Techmarine (Brother Askelon). Other 'Consul'-level personnel are not listed, but it is likely that a Master of Signal was present to act as liaison between the Force Commander and the orbital elements of the Strike Force. A Librarian would not have been present as the Edict of Nikea would still be in effect. The order of battle will be fleshed out as I purchase and build units, but for now, I present w.i.p. of: Force Commander Lamnos http://i548.photobucket.com/albums/ii324/facmanpob/Miniatures/works%20in%20progress/IMG_1606_zpsa8ce45a2.jpg Veteran Sergeant with Power Fist and Veteran Marine with requisitioned 'Diamat-pattern' meltagun http://i548.photobucket.com/albums/ii324/facmanpob/Miniatures/works%20in%20progress/photo_zpsed605fd4.jpg Two Chosen from the Force Command Squad, both armed with power swords http://i548.photobucket.com/albums/ii324/facmanpob/Miniatures/works%20in%20progress/cafdabc7-bf54-4c08-810e-121ea4c74d24_zps540b2858.jpg Brother Apothecary Gideon, sporting very fetching brand-new off the presses MkVI helmet, greaves and left cauldron http://i548.photobucket.com/albums/ii324/facmanpob/Miniatures/works%20in%20progress/d2b0abce-7813-4408-8ef2-94b0c2f30be7_zpsc787707f.jpg http://i548.photobucket.com/albums/ii324/facmanpob/Miniatures/works%20in%20progress/IMG_1605_zps5cae3791.jpg http://i548.photobucket.com/albums/ii324/facmanpob/Miniatures/works%20in%20progress/95c1f7be-65e8-473e-805c-0fd30d9b0d54_zpse55c414c.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/252082-guardians-of-the-covenant-and-first-legion/page/15/#findComment-3511058 Share on other sites

facmanpob
A quick wip of my Apothecary…. who is looking a bit 'Rogue Trader' at the moment…. should hopefully be finished with him this week As a senior member of his Order, Apothecary Gideon has been selected to test some of the prototype MkVI armour, small amounts of which have been issued to the First Legion http://i548.photobucket.com/albums/ii324/facmanpob/Miniatures/works%20in%20progress/IMG_1617_zpsdaac2e20.jpg a Calibanite veteran, as shown by the green on the right pauldron, Gideon was also a member of the Order of the Raven's Wing on Caliban http://i548.photobucket.com/albums/ii324/facmanpob/Miniatures/works%20in%20progress/IMG_1618_zps7f74a24e.jpg Gideon has also been inducted into the higher mysteries, as shown by his wearing of the golden winged sword icon on the left pauldron http://i548.photobucket.com/albums/ii324/facmanpob/Miniatures/works%20in%20progress/IMG_1620_zpsd5e0d449.jpg I'm breaking out the Predator on Thursday, so more update photos then Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/252082-guardians-of-the-covenant-and-first-legion/page/15/#findComment-3513547 Share on other sites

Bryan Blaire
He looks awesome, facmanpob! Familiar, but awesome. :D I really like the less than pristine white on the studded pauldron (I hope that was intentional). Really like the golden winged sword icon. Dark Rage
Rogue trader is the way to go, really nice. Do you plan to do the other squad members with red markings as well or were those just for the apothecary? facmanpob
@Isiah - thanks! :tu: @Bryan - fortunately the pauldron was intentional :P white base given a light wash of Devlan Mud followed by a drybrush of white, followed by a wash of very diluted Fortress Grey followed by a drybrush of Vallejo Off White. The helmet is the Vallejo Off White painted on. @DR - thanks! The artwork for Fallen Angels and from the Heresy Weekender earlier in the year has the DA icons in red, so the plan is to see what that looks like :) @Stobz - pistol in holster on left thigh :P Cheers all! :D Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/252082-guardians-of-the-covenant-and-first-legion/page/15/#findComment-3513791 Share on other sites
facmanpob
Oh, and I forgot to ask for thoughts on painting the chainsword.... Dark Angels don't strike me as the sort to worry about hazard markings, so I've ruled out any stripey Iron Warrior style painting, but I'm worried that painting the chainsword housing black will be too much darkness.... but I'm not sold on the idea of red either.... any thoughts? Dark Rage
Black and white square checkered design on the sword could be a more suitable DA style substitute for hazard stripes. Tanhausen
Amazing painting (old news :) )!!! My suggestion is that you go for a toned-down effect: how about a black casing, dull blade and some worked battle damage? facmanpob
Here's an example of one of my Guardians chainswords. elmo
That is a force to be proud of. For me two things stand out, the use of the anvil models and the weathering/scratches on the vehicles. facmanpob
Thanks mate I'm glad you mentioned the weathering on the vehicles, as that's something I'm most proud of, bearing in mind I'd never done it before Oh, and there'll be more Anvil miniatures in my First Legion 30K force I suppose I should start a separate thread for the First Legion..... strictly I should start it in the HH subforum, or wip subforum.... Bryan Blaire
On the chainblade motor housing, if you are going to go with silver again, I would suggest either a red or black blade body (would normally also suggest blue, as it commonly goes with silver, but would probably look weird on this guy) for the contrast. If you are going to do a very darkened metal housing, then the red or white would probably look good. Either way, a painted blade decoration of some kind (some suggestions: the Apothecary Helix; a downward pointed sword; cross guard, grip and pommel of a sword with outstretched wings to either side, a fancier set of stripes than on your SGT above) would probably be in order, could be in black, red, bone or white I'd think, depending on what color you choose for the blade body. Spaced Hulk
Excellent work once again mate Particularly like the Max-Mini Steam Knight(?) head on the Company Master. Are you going to tie your Heresy army to your Guardians in any way? I realise the GotC are a later founding, but I reckon the First Legion is traditionalist enough to re-use ancient heraldry and honour markings. Perhaps you could use the Guardians Chapter badge as Commander Lamnos's personal heraldry? As for the Apothecary's chainsword, I like Bryan's suggestion of the Apothecary Helix painted on the blade. Perhaps a white blade body to match the helmet, then either a red or silver helix? facmanpob
Thanks for all the suggestions…. I'm going to revisit the chainsword in a few days to do some form of iconography in red - most probably the helix, but for now I've just got it painted up enough to be able to start the Predator tomorrow (I have 3 hours on my own after the kids are in bed tomorrow night while my wife is at work… a perfect opportunity to start magnetising and cleaning up the Pred! ) For now though, here is Apothecary Gideon… http://i548.photobucket.com/albums/ii324/facmanpob/Miniatures/Space%20Marines/First%20Legion/Slide1_zpsc4203a6b.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/252082-guardians-of-the-covenant-and-first-legion/page/15/#findComment-3515506 Share on other sites
