Now that the bikes are coming along, its time to think about the riders and their weapons load outs.........

I magnetised one of the bikes

http://i548.photobucket.com/albums/ii324/facmanpob/Miniatures/works%20in%20progress/bike_gun_magnet.jpg

so I could put a meltagun

http://i548.photobucket.com/albums/ii324/facmanpob/Miniatures/works%20in%20progress/bike_gun_magnet_melta.jpg

or a plasmagun

http://i548.photobucket.com/albums/ii324/facmanpob/Miniatures/works%20in%20progress/bike_gun_magnet_plasma.jpg

and have started putting together the riders.....a fine body of men! ;)

I like the way you've tackled the magnetised weapons – very creative. BTW I'm not sure on 'chroming' any part of a 40K bike – somekind of stainless material maybe – but my point is in the field how long would it retain that gleam? Not long I'd say. I'm a grime'n'dirt man myself :P.

Cheers

I

Well, I haven't done the chromey bits yet and if I don't like the results on the test bike then i won't roll it out across the force :D as far as the magnets go, i've done my sergeant with a magnetised left arm, and i've already done a magnetised melta left arm too, so in order to get a bit of variety i thought i'd try magnetising the bike itself ....... After all, the fluff is always banging on about astartes magnetically clamping weapons on to their armour! :P also it gives me an opportunity to incorporate more bolt pistols and chainswords as well.

Glad you like it :D

I'm steadily making progress with the bikes for the ETL. Here are the latest wip photos.....

There are still areas to complete, such as the seats and the sleeping bags on the back, and the bolters haven't been touched at all yet, but overall they are getting there!

These two are the furthest along the conveyor belt :)

I also took a look at my test model, as I wasn't sure about whether there was too much red on the robes. So I decided to try painting the inner robes green.......Caliban green, washed with Biel-Tan shade, layered with Goblin Green, washed with Biel-Tan, and then glazed with Waywatcher green...very quick and slap-dash as it was just hte test model...let me know what you think, or should I stick with the red for the inner robes? (original picture in for comparison)

And finally, the GOTC are supposed to have black shoulder pads, but I didn't want to just paint them with Chaos Black as that might look a bit stark, so I'm experimenting with lots of washes! This is with 4 washes of Nuln Oil.....

I prefer the contrasting inner colour. Other colours to try would be bone white or black I guess. But the different colour certainly gives more depth and dynamism to the model :woot:.

Yup,its better looking with the inner green.

Funnily enough, I was looking at Bryan Blaire's DA painting comparison thread and thinking that bone might work for me too! :)

Weeeelllll, I haven't had a chance to do purple, but I did manage to try bone and black. So, without further ado.......

The Green

http://i548.photobucket.com/albums/ii324/facmanpob/Miniatures/works%20in%20progress/IMG_0323.jpg

The Bone (although theres no actual Bone colour used!)

http://i548.photobucket.com/albums/ii324/facmanpob/Miniatures/works%20in%20progress/IMG_0328.jpg

The Black (and again, there's no black used, just grey ..... well, except Nuln Oil shade that is!)

http://i548.photobucket.com/albums/ii324/facmanpob/Miniatures/works%20in%20progress/IMG_0329.jpg

they're all fairly quick and agricultural at this stage, and are simply for testing purposes. Your comments, as always, are very much appreciated.......

Ok, so no pictures for a week or so, but I have been working on the vow........

The bikes are nearly all done, just a little bit of work on the guns and then the weathering and they'll be done. The riders are starting to get paint on them too, so that's good.

I've also made progress with the attack bike

http://i548.photobucket.com/albums/ii324/facmanpob/Miniatures/works%20in%20progress/IMG_0330.jpg

and that should be essentially finished apart from the riders and basing by tonight :D

  • 2 weeks later...

Well, after a week of Jubilee festivities and visiting my parents in the grim darkness of the North of England I have actually made some decent progress on my vow.....

Pictures will follow this evening hopefully, but as a roundup:

Ravenwing Attack Squadron

Sergeant - 90% - weathering and some detail work on the bike's bolters remaining

Corporal (can be used as a Serge) - 90% - as above

Plasma Gunner - 90% - as above

Plasma Gunner - 80% - detail work on the weapon options in addition to the above

Ablative wound 1 (sorry chap, you don't have a name yet!) - 70% - he hasn't got any arms yet!

Ablative wound 2 - 70% - ditto!

Attack Bike - 50% - riders and weapons to do

Landspeeder - 25%

So hopefully I will finish off the bikes in the next couple of days and then move on to the Attack Bike and the speeder. I should have finished the vow by the end of June, which then gives me enough time to add a second vow. Options for consideration: Interrogator Chaplain on bike, Venerable Dreadnought, Landspeeder Tempest, Sammael on jetbike, a second Ravenwing Attack Squadron....hmmm, choices choices :)

Wow nice GotC!

Im very curious about your speeder, which was only metals, will it be much metal in the end too?...Using 70-100% metals on a vehicle can look really nice, but maybe hard to achieve?!?!

Really looking forward on your Speeder!

Thanks Brother Captain! The speeder is probably going to be mainly boltgun metal with several Nuln oil washes to darken it down, but there is going to be some bling on it to give some colour! ^_^

So, here are some more wip updates, as promised.......(please note that the colour balance changes throughout the picturers, as I am currently experimenting with photographing my miniatures!)

First, up, is the squad of bikes. I have named them Squad Azmaveth, after a fallen hero of the Chapter who led the squad in millenia past. Azmaveth is currently interred inside a Dreadnought, and may make a future appearance ;)

http://i548.photobucket.com/albums/ii324/facmanpob/Miniatures/works%20in%20progress/Squad_Azmaveth4.jpg

In more detail now........

Veteran Guardian Djinn and Veteran Guardian Antonic, the squad's senior officers......(these have a variety of weapon outfits, and allow me to run the squad as 2 x 3-man bike squads if I want to.....

and boy is he unhappy about something.... ^_^

2ic of the squad is Antonic.....with chainsword at the ready!

Special weapons are deployed by Brother Guardians Phenex and Ephraim

http://i548.photobucket.com/albums/ii324/facmanpob/Miniatures/works%20in%20progress/Brothers_Phenex_Ephraim2.jpg

and rounding out the squad are Brothers Gadal and Shax (poor Shax doesn't have his right arm yet though!) :(

Finally, the Attack Bike and Speeder are progressing too

I am SO stealing that idea for for magnetized special weapon load outs. Awesome. I think the only thing i'd do differently is add straps to the weapon.

Rare to see a GoC army around here. Loving the thread so far.

Thanks very much! :P

btw, forgot to add a big thank you to Isiah and The Dark Fortress for helping out with the naming of my miniatures........ :tu: The Book of Names has been invaluable, as has the site in general :)

Yup, it's looking really cool so far FMP.

CnC though....drill or black dot those barrels FTW.

Love the plasma gun on the side of the bike, cool.

:)

stobz

Thanks....don't worry, drilling the barrels is on my list of jobs, although I probably should have done it at the start of the project!

Quick question, how do you get the guys onto the bikes? Mine are separate for painting but test runs have resulted in some breakage

I keep them separate for painting then fit them near the end of the job. The one thing I made sure of though was to do a test fit of the rider with the bike before I started any serious painting, and if any of them were difficult to fit I swapped the bodies around until they matched better....after that it was just a matter of keeping the correct rider with the correct bike! ^_^

facmanpob, you've done some great stuff! Really liking how your army is progressing. I can't see anything that I'd add or change on your work, they really do look great. Glad you've already decided on drilling the barrels, personally, I usually wait until the model is more complete but before I've done the final painting on the bores of the weapons themselves, at least that way I can get a consistent finish across the whole thing, so honestly about the stage you're at now with your models. I agree with Master Toddius, that's a really original and great way to do the magnetizing of the special weapons, because you can really imagine that the riders probably really do sling their weapons while their are truly riding their hogs!

Are you planning on doing some of the "spidery, hand-written and illuminated text" (per the Codex) on their armor, bike farings and fenders? I think you could do some really cool stuff with that!
