Angels of Vengeance WIP

Recommended Posts

Tremendous work, mate. I'm a sucker for all things knightly, but you're taking it one step further.

Thanks, Greyall. I'm hoping to do with greenstuff and sheet plastic what you do on paper. ;)

I think having a theme for these guys is really firing up my imagination. For years, I wanted an Imperial Fists army and I started the project with a lot of enthusiasm, but issues with painting yellow as well as just getting bored killed it for me. I came up with a couple of neat conversions, but it was really more of a pose I wanted than something more inspired. They were the same marines that I've had for years, painted variously as Blood Angels, Crimson Fists, or (almost)Salamanders, except they were yellow and I stuck a few fist icons on them here and there.

The imagination wasn't there.

But now I have a theme, something to make the army a more cohesive whole beyond them all being marines and painted the same color. It's really surprising how many more ideas I have for these AoV guys than any of the other times I've started in on my marines after a dip in some paint stripper.

I wouldn't worry about the zweihander sword thing. In the grim darkness of the far future, "two-handed" is just a suggestion.

Well, I was planning on that being a relic blade, but I'm not sure if those exist anymore. <_<

And uh, if you wanted to do a drawing of this termie once I get him finished, I wouldn't object too strenuously. :D

*editing in reply to SCC*

I own the figure, making it very handy to have the reference right there so that I can view it different angles and compare to what I'm doing.

Nothing like a good point of reference, it can make all the difference :P

Are you going to sculpt the whole thing in GS? I ask simply because if I was seeking to replicate that I'd consider plasticard for the nice straight strips of the wings around the side of the greaves,

I thought the same thing when I first decided that I wanted to replicate that design, but I might have to go buy some thinner strips. I'll double-check, but I think the ones I have are too thick.

The Custodes and other stuff have kept me away from these guys for a bit, but I started up on a new Chaplain conversion today, based on this Finecast guy:

The arms were in terrible shape with bad pockmarks and bubbles, and almost half of the left shoulder pad was just gone from a giant void or air bubble, so I'm in the process of getting a replacement from GW. In the meantime, I had an idea earlier and started chopping up the rest of the guy to salvage what I could:

I didn't want the head to be leaned over like that, and removing it was something of a PITA. Luckily, with my new tube making tool, I was able to replace the badly cast tubes on the sides of his face. The feet were removed from the lower legs and repositioned, and I decided to do way with the thighs because they were also badly pockmarked. I'm not sure what I'm going to do about the arms yet, but the general idea I have for this Chaplain is something reminiscent of the Grim Reaper. He'll have a hooded robe, maybe kinda tattered. I dunno, we'll see where it takes me from here.

First of all, AWESOME work here! ;)

Second of all, I have a suggestion for the Chaplain. You say you want a Grim Reaper style Chaplain, correct? Something popped up in my head for the crozius. Imagine this, an eagle with one wing folded at his side at rest, while the other wing is outstretched to form a scythes blade. That way you accomplish the crozius look while retaining a Grim Reaper's signature weapon. Just a thought :)

Whatever you choose to do with him, I can't wait to see!

I like that idea, but I'm not sure if my sculpting skills are up to it. Another consideration is now that there are 4 different types of power weapons, I don't want to make his Crozius into something that could be confused with another type.

Small update:

Even though you won't even see the thighs if this goes remotely how I have planned, I always want to make sure the underlying anatomy is correct, which is why the shape is just roughed in and not completely smoothed out. For the arms, I'm now thinking maybe he'll be holding an open book in his left hand and pointing his Crozius with his right.

Next up will be filling in the holes where the feet attached, and patching up even more bad spots I've found in the cast. :(

This thread is amazing brother any updates coming soon? I really like the Liam Nesson pose mind if I use it? You'd get full credit?

I hope to have some more updates very soon, and yes, feel free to borrow the pose if you like, but I hope it gives you less trouble than it did me.

Oh, man. That Chaplain is shaping up nicely. I'm also liking your other work on the Company Master.

Thanks. :)

I just picked up the Dark Vengeance box today(well... half of it which I split with a friend) and while I wasn't really blown away by the chaplain special character as a whole, I really like some of the bits. The helm in particular is really nice and I might replace the one currently on my chaplain conversion with the new one.

I've decided to join the Path of Redemption in the hopes of lighting a fire under my butt and getting some stuff done.

For the first month, I've only vowed 5 of the tac marines from the DV box set to set the bar low in the hopes that I won't blow this deadline. This will also give me a chance to try out the paint scheme on miniatures that don't have a ton of conversion work with greenstuff on them, which is a nightmare to strip if I wasn't happy with the painting.

Since I want as few bare faces as possible in my army(and to satisfy my urge to do some small amount of converting on the sarge) I snipped the head off and replaced it. As these will be Angels of Vengeance I'll also have to change the Chapter icon on the right shoulder pads. I was thinking at first that I would scrape away the sword and sculpt in the hooded skull of the AoV badge, but in the interests of the deadline, I'll either remove it completely and use a decal, or if that doesn't look good, I'll just cut away the shoulder pads and replace them regular bare marine ones from my bits box and use decals.

As always seems to happen, as soon as I commit to some sort of vow, pledge, etc, all kinds of life issues pop up and keep from the hobby table. I'm really going to have to scramble to finish this 5 man tac squad for my PtR vow this month, but here's some work I knocked out last night and earlier today:

http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x5/Kageboshi/AoV_Paint_Test_Wip1_zps21d2b61d.jpg

I'll have to work on getting some better pictures later because the blue line highlights are MUCH brighter than they appear here. The AoV decals I got from GW look good, but as with most decals on the unfriendly shoulder pad's curved surface, Micro Sol is your best friend, softening the decal film overnight so that it would lay flat. Unfortunately, the AoV company numbers that would go on the right shoulder pad are too big to fit on the raised tac symbol from the Dark Vengeance marines. I think I have some old DA decal sheets around here somewhere, so all hope may not be lost in that area.

In my first post on this thread, I showed a termie I started years ago in an AoV scheme with bone white chest decorations, but I was so impressed by the bronze and black on Chris Borer's AoV chapter master, I decided to go with that instead of the white. Not only does it make the paint scheme less harsh with just black, white, and some red, the patina on the bronze is blue-green which ties nicely into the blue line highlights on the armor. For the bolter, I decided to go with grey highlights to show that they are not exactly the same color, and to break up all of the blue highlights right in the middle of the figure.

It's still wip, but I like where it's going.

Looking great so far, I love the work done on the Chaplain. I did a similar conversion on the Sgt from my DV box. What colour are you using to highlight the black?

The base highlight color is P3 Coal Black and I make the stripe kinda wide, then mix in a little GW Stegadon Scale Green and then a little Lothern Blue for the final highlight. The Coal Black is all but invisible in the pics. :)

A little more work and hopefully a better picture:

Man, the eyes look much better when not blown up this big. My painting skills are so damn rusty. /sigh

If I could paint black that well, I'd be doing these guys instead of GotC. Outstanding!!!!!

Cheers,

Jono

Thanks, Grot! Aside from the termies I started those years ago, I've rarely tried to paint a figure that was solid black before. It's maddeningly simple and extremely difficult at the same time, and I'm really happy with how it's coming out despite the internal critic constantly reminding me that I used to be a much better painter.

I wasn't sure if I'd ever be posting in this thread again, but Grotsmasha's librarian contest got me motivated enough to get something done.

I first had the idea for this Libby some time ago in my Imperial Fists thread, way back in October of 2011. At the time, it was just one of my rough sketch mock ups with a few dots of superglue and a lot of blue tac:

http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x5/Kageboshi/LibrarianMK2WIP1.jpg

Back then, I was drooling over the Sevrin Loth figure but really didn't have the funds for it, but I did have some FW Red Scorp bits I picked up from eBay at an amazingly low price, and thought I'd try for my own version of him. Not long after I posted this WIP pic, I seemed to lose interest in the Fists and this guy went into my box of half-formed WIP figures, though he stayed in the back of my head. I spent a lot of time on the pose and trying out LOTS of different arms and was really happy with the simple but evocative feel to it.

So then I see Grotsmasha's thread and decide it's time to finish this guy up. In the time since, my interest had shifted from Imperial Fists to the Dark Angels successor chapter, Angels of Vengeance, as you probably know by now from this thread, so some changes had to be made for a more knightly feel.

I didn't think to to get any in-progress pics, but the only real conversion parts to this guy was making his torso taller with a greenstuff spacer between the chest and leg pieces, sculpting the half-robe thing that the Librarians favor, and adding the power cabling over the left shoulder, sculpting the horn on the chest skull and the mesh in the shoulder and wrist joint. I also shaved the camera/sensor thing off of the left side of the helmet and added another power cable along that side.

And for those wanting to know where the parts came from, here's an inventory:

As always, thanks for looking and C&C welcome.

Holy hell that is an awesome looking model. Considering it is standing still, it is a very dynamic model filled with lots of motion. One of the things I really love about it is that you didn't have to do hours upon hours of green stuff work to make a really individual character like you did here.

Be proud. The only other librarian I have liked this much was Tom Schadle's who won Slayer Sword years ago. Haven't seen him post on here in forever, but his name is Commander Y and I believe he/was a mod. This is his librarian

Again, not my work.

I always try to confer some sense of motion to my figures whenever possible, which is why I will sometimes spend hours trying out different parts and tweaking the pose until it really captures the feel I'm after. The challenge with Epistolary Oberin here is that it was a static pose and I wanted to convey some motion as well as a sense of power and solidness to him.

For the motion, I tried to sculpt the robe and the tabard on the back as if they were fluttering in the wind, being pulled by the warp forces he's channeling, and the shape of the big purity seals definitely helped that illusion.

I'm glad you liked the conversion and I'm flattered at the comparison to a Slayer Sword winning figure! blush.png

If there's still room for suggestions as to the chaplain- he's "walking" forward, so i'd think if he held a scythe (loosely pointed down) in his right hand and pointed forward with his left it would look great. Great work on the librarian btw.

Yeah, there hasn't been much progress on the chaplain since that last pic was taken, so I'm open to ideas and I like that one. I'll have to figure out what to do for his weapon first and then see what I can do for posing the arms.

Glad you like the libby. :)
