On Saturday August 18th there'll be the first ever Golden Demon awards held in Japan (in Kanda, Tokyo, specifically). Tickets have just gone one sale here here (since June 30th). 900 yen in advance, 1000 yen in the day. Bought mine today.

I wondered if anyone else from the B&C will be going?

Edited by Kierdale

900 Yen? Thats like 9 dollars? they cost more like 30 Dollars here in Germany.

I wish you fun there and hope you will make some pictures and post them, there are some insane hobbyist/modellers in Japan, it will be interesting how they envision the 40K Universe.

It's about 11 bucks US. Seven pounds twenty-five Sterling. 9.1 Euros.

I think it's going to be a fair bit smaller than the UK's, hence the lower price. That and it's just Golden Demon, no Games Day (and hence no limited ed. miniature...I already asked ^_^ ). Hopefully if it's successful it'll get bigger.

It's about twenty years since I last went to a GD, so I'm really looking forward to it!

...and I'll definitely be taking a lot of photos!

  • 1 month later...

At Japan's first GD now. I'll upload photos tonight if possible.

Aside from the contest itself there's a WFB game going to me played by the two Throne of Skulls champions, a scrap-challenge (40 minutes to make a kitbash from a mountain of different sprues. The glue fumes are overpowering in the corner with all the finished conversions...including my Greyall-inspired Rainbow Warrior).

As for the contest. The number of entries...

40k single mini: 7

40k squad: 5, including my entry (it was 4 then they moved a very nicely done DA unit from Diorama to 40k squad :( )

40k large: 4

40k vehicle: 7

FB single: 6

FB regiment: 3

FB large: 5

Diorama: 3

Duel: 3

Young blood: 0!

LotR single: 0!

Aaaand: no slayer sword. Here in Jpn we have strict weapon laws (you can buy replica katana, etc and take 'em home, sure. But you can't import 'em!). Apparently it'll be kept at GWUK for the winner in a special display case. Should they ever visit the UK they can take it out and hold it. Bummer.

I took a lot of photos and got back late, so I'll try to upload the photos either tomorrow or Monday.

There wasn't a lot of entries (max. 7 in one category, 3-5 in most), and less than 40 people, but some of the pieces were extremely well made and painted. The slayer sword winner (who received a large cardboard cutout of the sword and a certificate granting him access to his weapon at GW UK HQ) well deserved his prize.

As other were saying during the event, it's worth entering as many categories as possible with the GD awards being so new and small here. I'll be making more entries next year for sure (hopefully my skill will have improved in 12 months' time!).

It's taking quite a while to edit photos (took too many for starters. Far too many bad ones and having to scale them down). Pardon the naff shots. Borrowed the missus' camera and used it for the first time.

For starters...

40K Single Miniature Winners

The detail on that banner was not freehand work...it was sculpted with GS! ^_^

He also used a cut-down toothpick to do his scribblescript on purity seals, etc. Exceedingly fine.

Silver

-Love the choice of a fake book as their base (I think it doubled as a carry case)

Bronze

Mine, mine, mine! My precious!

gallery_63428_6618_131807.jpg

...was surprised (not to mentioned delighted!)! Before anyone suggests it, there were more than three entries in this category :P

Next up, 40K large mini...

EDIT: a quick link to some pictures from another guy who was there (with a far better camera) HERE

At the moment I can't remember which won silver and bronze so here's the gold, which also won the slayer sword. Check out the fly on the shoulder, more on the lamp and the scattered trash, not to mention great weathering.

Next up is 40K vehicle and a storm eagle conversion...

Warhammer 40k Vehicle

Gold

Won by Hugo Matte of IchibanPainting, a pro who had a lot of good advice. He also picked up Bronze for his GK in the 40K single and won the Scrap Demon.

The datasheet with snazzy fluff (apparently it meshes with one of the GK novels)

When I have time I'll add photos from other categories.

There were, if I remember correctly, four non-Japanese who won demons (myself, Hugo of IchibanPainting, the winner of the 40k large mini & slayer sword Christian and a guy whose real name I can't remember but who posts as Tenorikuma over on NagoyaHammer. I put in a link to his thread and pics earlier). The other trophies were, as I recall, won by Japanese. In fact, one Japanese guy won eight demons...and went home before judging or the awards ceremony!

I know Hugo came from Osaka, perhaps some others from Nagoya, I hear another came from Canada(!). Thankfully I'm a Tokyoite! Not sure where the Japanese were from in Japan.

I'll try to post the rest of my photos through this week.

EDIT: if I find any other sites with pics, including Jpnz ones, I'll post links.

Congrats on the bronze! Your name was Jonah, right?

Thanks for posting your photos. I linked to this thread from my own photo thread at NH.

I look forward to seeing your entry/ies next year.

Edited by Tenorikuma

Hey! Thanks. Congratulations on the Silver yourself! I'll try to get photos of your work up this week. I hope you don't mind me linking to your thread.

Hopefully I'll be there again next year (wife willing ;) ). You too?

Edit: oh, actually my name is Jonathan, but Jonah's more than half right!

IIRC there were only three entries, so this was Bronze

Not sure what this is...??

A lovely Kairos. Apparently he painted one of the pages of the book atop the staff "exactly the same as the dragon page in Storm of Magic" (if I heard him right)

Scrap Demon Challenge

We had 40 minutes, plastic glue, a pair of clippers (no modelling knives, no super glue!) and a mountain of random sprues with which to build...whatever we liked!

The trophy and winner:

gallery_63428_7609_144793.jpg

gallery_63428_7609_138708.jpg

Everyone there did one entry, so there were quite a lot, but here are two of the other funny ones...

gallery_63428_7609_172321.jpg

gallery_63428_7609_300750.jpg

...yes, that last one is made from sprue, not parts! Everyone had a good laugh: it is a new kind of tyranid? No, must be Tau...no, no, it's got to be Necron...

Armies on Parade

The other entry couldn't make it on the day, so this one (entered by the staff of GW Nakano) automatically won.
