Good idea with the mutilators there Mali and Moloch's coming along well, but I do think you should do something with that ball. What though, I'm not sure. What sort of tyranid thing did you have in mind there? If you did turn it into a "flail" sort of thing then I think it would need a bit of thinning down first.

the flail idea was to saw off the ball entirely, and try to blend some trailing ribbed power cords into the end of the tail. The nid idea was to glue the ends of two old MC scything talons like I used for the front claws together to make a sort of pinsir thing.

Something has to be done, I know, the ball isn't there because I plan to keep it but rather because it was just part of the bits that I used for the tail. I'm really not sure what I want to try yet, though, and probably won't be trying anything for a while.

I've considered using a scytal as a stinger, but it wasn't looking good. Wrong size/shape. I could try to rig up a stinger out of something else, but it doesn't seem like it would work out in practice as well as it might conceptually.

I have very few painted models out of a rather large collection, but it used to be out of a much, much larger collection, including a few super heavies. In celebration of the new Apocalypse, I have purchased back the Plaguereaper conversion I put together for the first edition of Apocalypse from the friend I sold it to, who never did start that Death Guard army he was going to use it with.

It's dusty, and it lost a heavy bolter from one of its sponsons some time in the couple years since I've seen it, but is otherwise in pretty good shape. Just some minor cleaning and fixing up, give it a spare heavy bolter from the CSM command sprue, a bit more putty work, and it'll be ready for priming, like I never sold it at all.

a pirate cannon I found at a toy store. Fisher price maybe? Can't remember. With some greenstuff obviously, and the top cut off of an old glue cap to make the spray nozzle in the mouth of the barrel. And some... Lego bionicle cords? If I'm remembering right, I may have to replace those. Bionicle plastic is like oil & water to acrylic paints, iirc.

Got a new heavy bolter in the plaguereaper, and it looks ok, though it will need some putty work to obscure the missing ammo belt. Picture turned out fuzzy, though, and it wasn't enough progress that I felt like going back to the camera to take another shot.

Also, I picked up a plastic fantasy sorcerer to use as a power armored sorcerer & occasional counts-as Ahriman. Conversion wasn't much, just added a pistol holster & a dark vengeance chosen backpack:

He joins my terminator sorcerer/counts as Typhus & infantry axelord/counts as Khârn in my pile of pretend special characters. I'm just missing Bile (who I'll get the actual bile model for, if I can find it in metal second hand, and just run him as actual bile instead of pretend bile), huron, & Lucious. I'm not sure how I'm going to convert counts as characters for the latter two. Right now I'm leaning towards hacking up my painted dark vengeance lord from a few pages back to turn into my pretend Lucious (just need to trade out the bolt pistol for a daemonic whip? Or maybe give him a converted hand flamer to represent the doom siren, and then give him some tentacles reaching out from under his cape? I don't know).

Wow, adding a backpack to that mini makes a huge difference to how he looks. I was lamenting recently that I had no excuse to get one, what with his lack of power armour and all. Might have to try this myself.

His proportions are skinnier than a regular marine, mostly because he's taller without being any wider. Because of that, though, I strongly recommend using one of the DV chosen packs on him, as I did here. the Regular packs didn't look quite right, imo. Made him seem a bit top heavy. You'll have to cut at his back armor a bit & maybe use a small bit of greenstuff to get the pack to fit on right, but once it's on there everything works well and he fits right in.

I have to say, I really love the plastic characters we've gotten in the last year or so, they've all been pretty fantastic, unlike the finecast offerings. I especially love this guy, the tzeentch sorcerer, the vamp counts necromancer, the vamp counts white king, and the CSM aspiring champion, who fits right in with the DV chosen that I love so much. That one chaos warrior guy with the big hornes and the spear is also pretty quality, I may have to find an excuse to add him to my CSM force at some point. He's beefy enough to work with a possessed pack, I think.

  • 1 month later...

Well, I've been painting again, on account of the forthcoming Black Legion supplement. Unfortunately, the progress has been pretty slow. So far, apart from the lord, I've only got five models painted & ready for sealer:

http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z142/Malisteen/Black%20Legion/CSM18_zpsf4ce9199.jpg

The main delay has been the edge highlight. I'm not terribly good at it. My hand was never that steady - it's why my Eyes of Horus look more like the Eye of Sauron, I just couldn't freehand the standard Black Legion icon, and I could never get the transfers to work, either. Anyway, each individual model takes me fully an hour to do the edge highlights alone. I'd skip them, but the difference in quality of the models is just too much:

http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z142/Malisteen/Black%20Legion/CSM19_zps26242471.jpg

Especially when seen from accross a table instead of up close. Power armor always seems to look better with a bit of edge highlighting, but after years of denying it I had to break down and admit that it's pretty much essential for black armor, at least for someone of my limited talents.

Anyway, the five above are done but for matte spray and some paint on gloss for the eyes, and I've got 17 more ready for the edge highlights, plus a small cup of magnetized plasma guns, melta guns, champion arms, and icons still to paint up before I can call them truly done. While I had hoped to have them ready for the Supplement release, there's no way I'm finishing them all this weekend. Then again, I won't be able to pick up the supplement until the ebook release Sept 7th, so maybe I'll be able to finish them by then? Classes start the last week of August, though, and I fear between full time work and full time classes, my hobby time will disappear completely. We'll have to see.

You're being modest Mali, your edge highlights are pretty great from where I stand. Even if your eye of horus doesn't look exactly like it's supposed to, that's not a bad thing as it identifies your own warband (I don't think it looks like the eye of sauron either though).

Since the last post, I've got four more edge highlighted. Well, sorta - it's two more of the models holding empty air with magnets for special weapons, and two armless champions with magnets in their shoulders, so they're not exactly 'done', I'll still need to paint weapon options for them. I'm considering dremmeling out the magnets I put in the champions' shoulders, though. I mean, they hold the arms on, but not very strongly. I used heavier magnets in the terminators, and those just feel so much more solid. But I hate to take a dremel to an already converted and painted model. Maybe I'll just get lazy and glue on power sword arms, and just use heavier magnets in the future? I don't know.

No more pics yet, but I'll have more up this weekend. Not much to see, though, it's just more marines as above, each one a slow, grueling process, torturous to my eyes and fingers.

Otherwise, I've picked up a friend's busted old loyalist land raider, and busted it further myself. Hopefully with some work it will be able to form the foundation of a new chaos land raider, since my old one's long gone. I ordered some FW black legion land raider doors for it, along with 5 autocannons to convert some havocs, and 10 plasma guns on account of the new black legion supplement and its overpriced but potentially ammusing chosen shenanigans. Don't know how long that stuff will take to arrive.

Oh, and I picked up the daemon codex and a few models. Pics when they're assembled as well.

wow I re looked you minis and I really dig the flat black look they got going. I think you said. light grey over brush, dark grey dry brush and black wash? I might have to steal it.

On an unrelated note the story about Abby stealing Orks to test deamonic possesion  in the BL supp has got me thinking of some good ideas for cultist.

Other way around. Black undercoat, dark grey overbrush or heavy drybrush (a light spray could also work, but I haven't found a grey spray dark enough, and I don't do airbrushing yet), lighter grey (still pretty dark though) drybrush, then a black wash (I don't like the new GW black ink for this, it tends to leave milky white cracked residue). The wash should be pretty heavy, may take multiple coats. A wash of watered down black paint actually might be a better way to go, I plan on trying that with later batches.

Anyway, that should give you a dark blackish grey with some shading and tone variety to it. It still needs an edge highlight though - without the edge highlight it looks soft like cloth instead of hard like armor. The edge highlight is also needed so that you can make out the armor detail at arms length, which is important for the models to actually look nice on the table while playing with them.

I use 'slaaneshi grey', a kind of pale, purplish, neutral grey for edge highlights. Bluish or neutral greyish tones could work as well - I use Slaaneshi grey because it's also the top level highlight for my purple soft armor and features in the process for my daemonic fleshi growths & stuff, helping to tie everything together. You don't want something too bright, because it will look brighter on the black of your models. Obviously for fancier models, you'll want to start with a darker edge highlight, and then proceed to lighter tones to get some extra depth out of it. My lord was first highlighted in the 'slightly lighter but still pretty dark' grey from earlier in the process, and then worked up to the slaaneshi grey.

Damn, the line highlighting really does make a huge difference. Never seen a with/without comparison shot like that before.

It's such a pain, though, isn't it? It's not like those filthy loyalists and their crisp-edge armour plates. It's all recessed panels here in the Eye.

Yeah, it's a major pain.  Still averaging an hour a model for just the one step, and that's just for these line troopers, not for the lord.  It's actually pretty much the same between CSM and loyalist bits, though (there are a few in there).

I'm up to 11 done, fully half of the starting batch.  I said there'd be more pictures, but I got busy today.  Really isn't anything to see other than more of the same, though.

Well, get a group shot when you can.  Nothing's better than a completed unit, even if it's just the bodies, the weapons and arms will get there.

I'm really digging the Eyes your painting on these guys as well, nicely done.

Don't even have a whole unit done - 11 models, but not a coherent 11, it includes two units worth of champions and special weapon troopers, and even those aren't done done, since I haven't painted their magnet bits, so the special weapon troopers are holding invisible guns like they were localized by 4kids, and the champions are armless like bad 4chan parodies of Abaddon. So they don't exactly make for the most impressive of group shots, yet.

I did get a small game in yesterday with my mostly painted forces. 500 points vs. Space Wolves in an objective mission - the one where HS is scoring, but neither of us had any.

I had two squads of 10 CSMs with vets, dual plasma, and power sword/melta bomb champs, led by lord with vets, power sword, and aura. He had a squad of 10 hunters with a flamer (I think?), a squad of 5 with a plasma gun in a razorback, and a wolf lord with artificer armor, frost axe, and storm shield.

I got first deployment, rolled master of deception for my warlord trait, and rolled a three, allowing me to infiltrate everything. He put the lord with 10 marines on one objective, and the razorback squad far away on another, I surrounded the small squad with my entire force.

Four plasmaguns made short work of the razorback, and an assault from the lord and a squad of CSMs finished the squad off. The rest of the wolves realized their mistake and left cover to try to get to me, but were wittled down to almost nothing by the time they reached me. I had already won the game at that point, so to keep things fun I threw my chaos lord forward to fight his wolf lord in a challenge. The wolf lord slaughtered my general, of course, but like I said, the game was already mine.
