PtR - An eclectic mix from Cactus' collection

Awesome Ezekiel model, love the freehand work that you've done. I'm waiting to see what special powers he has in the new codex before picking one up, but I might bend a little bit and get one anyway. Would you recommend finding a metal version, or should I take the risk and order one in Finecast?

I'd be a little concerned about finecast because any air bubbles in the keys or books will be a nightmare to fill neatly. Finecast should show Jes Goodwin's detail very well, but I'm not confident that the quality is as good as GW want it to be and say it is. That's not such a problem if you're buying from a shop and can check the quality first. A quick check on a well-known online bazaar reveals that second-hand metal ones aren't much more expensive than buying finecast from GW.

It really is a model worth getting. Even if you never use it as Ezekiel it is, in my opinion, the best looking librarian model available. The hands and sword are a separate component so it could quite easily be converted to an axe or staff.

Brother Kovash, it appears that Ezekiel hasn't yet been finecast so it shouldn't be hard to get a metal one.

Now, on with the show...

I, Cactus, vow to paint a Consecrators terminator squad equipped with Tartaros pattern armour before the moveable feast that is the January deadline.

I've been working on these while the board was down and they're nearly finished.

I don't want to leave you waiting for too long Stobz, so here's a WIP shot.

This is my first proper attempt at painting the 'power crackle' but I think it looks alright. I'm going to paint some wiggly white text on parts of the armour to break up all that black.

Enjoy your beers guys. I've decided to include my LPC entry here too. These models might double up as February's PtR vow if they aren't complete by then.

I, Cactus of the Dark Angels, vow on the honour of my Chapter to paint and present at least one unit of four Deathwing Knights and a Knight Master on or before the 31st of March, 2013. I promise to provide at least two WIP updates, preferably with pictures, in that time. I vow that if I should fail, I will provide the Librarium with an article and wear the Signature of Shame until my penitence period is done.

I've finished cutting out all the components and sawing the arms off the storm shields. There's still some cleaning up and possible re-posing to be done before anything gets glued. I've decided to leave the imposing cataphractii torsos bare. The cloth will continue up from the waist but go below the breastplate.

Dude; here I am laying on my lounge floor admiring my new carpet and discover you've done exactly what I was going to do for my Knights :tu:

Did they convert together well enough? They sure look awesome, are they to be Consecrators too? My laziness prevents me reading back too far ;)

Thank you Stobz. I'm glad somebody else likes the result. This squad will be painted as Deathwing, although they would look great in black armour. Cuttting the plastic parts to fit wasn't very difficult but the range of potential poses with the cataphractii is a bit limited and the left arms are at some odd angles to be holding storm shields. I've been swapping arms around until I'm happy with all five. I'll do a little write-up of the process when I have some time.

Damn, beat me to the same thing for Deathwing Knights. :) Nice to know how good they look though! I'd been considering modifying the plastic arms rather than using the Cat ones, but I guess it's a lot more work to sculpt the shoulder straps...

Very nice work on those DW Knights, Cactus!

You say you will continue the robe up from the waist, but below the breastplate - do you not think green stuffing it over just the far right and left of the breastplate would not look right? Also, will you attempt to add some of the sensors (as if they modified the armor over time perhaps)?

The plastic arms look awful on the cataphractii bodies. Indomitus pattern is all thick armour plates with smooth curves; Cataphractii is made up of angular layers and it's a jarring mismatch. Cutting the arms away from the storm shields is not as difficult as it looks. I just kept hacking and shaving away with a saw, then clippers, then a knife.

Ordered some today, credit card is starting to hurt but after seeing these....thanks for breaking my willpower with your great minis Cactus Sir.

You won't regret it.

Thank you. :-)

It's not that it wouldn't look right but that I'm not certain it will look right with my poor attempt at sculpting cloth! It's one of the design elements of the knights that I'm very keen on but I'd rather have no cloth than unnatural looking cloth, if you know what I mean. Now that I've finalised the poses (I hope!) I'll consider it. If I do attempt it over the torso I might also modify the tassels below the shoulders to be the sleeves of the surplice. I did put the sensors to one side when I cut up the knight torsos and haven't decided yet whether to include them. I need to check if they even fit now the shoulder pads are in place!

Everything is now cut out, cleaned and trimmed. I've spent a few days fiddling with the positioning and swapping arms around. Each limb in the cataphractii set is angled slightly differently and the various combinations can result in some surprisingly dynamic poses, as well as many goofy ones! The next major task is filling this wedge shaped gap at the left wrists.

There can be absolutely no doubt that these guys are here to smash your face!

By the Emperor, that mashup is absolutely perfect. The maces and flails fit the Cataphractii armor to a t. I would just be tempted to see if they still look good without the tabbards, because I'd be very tempted to keep those for normal Deathwing guys - I just like the robes.

Believe me the cataphractii still look great without the tabards. I would show you, but I've already chopped away the original groin-danglers. (Is there a correct name for those Romanesque strips of leather?)

They looking great cuz :-)

Can't wait to see them painted :-)

Cheers Rob. There'll be a slight delay on painting these bad boys because I've decided to take the plunge and re-sculpt the top half of their surplices. Here are the first two in progress:

If anybody has any tips on sculpting cloth I'd love to hear them, because I'm basically making this up as I go along!

I remember seeing a guys Space Marine 'Monks' where he sculpted robes

I'll dig it out and post here for you Dark Angel'ers ... as I know you like your robes you lot

Well I would if the other forum wants to load :-/

It loaded now ...

Start of the thread ...

Where robes look pretty good ... may start sooner but I skipped ahead to reply

Here is thread on Dakka- Dakka that the guy doing the marines robes looked at ...

And finally ... here is a video which I not watched but I found on YouTube for sculpting robes tabbards etc...

And I can't help you with what the groin leather danglers are ...

But danglers sounds alright term to me lol

snip... There can be absolutely no doubt that these guys are here to smash your face!

Damned right!!! HULK SMASH.

And the goofy DK mace heads actually look great with the thicker set Cataphractii armour.

Soooo good news; I was going to buy and use the little ones from the new flyer bling as I would only have used the Nephilm version (for modelling purposes). I may still buy a couple but they can now wait...

Cheers for sharing Brother and good luck with your sculpting.

They are either Pre-Heresy therefore the original colors of the dark angels.....or......they're Fallen Angels in which case......

.....hell yes!!!! Another one has seen the light and the Lion as the traitor for who he is!!!

No, they are consecrators chapter, renowned DA successors who value and use relic technology and guard a pre-imperial fortress on there home world that Ol empt himself once visited.
