Daemon2027
Just letting you know brother - I haven't forgotten about that mini. I'll try to find some time to post up a picture sometime. :P Cool was thinking I may have missed it with my absence. Artemid
Thanks for the comments. Artemid: it is supposed to be a statue, part of some imperial ruins. I have tried to add damage to obscure it as an inquisitor. Possibly shouldn't have used a special character but had it spare. Will obviously paint it as stone. That was my best guess, in which case I'm sure it'll look mighty fine with paint, particularly if it seems to be on some sort of base instead of just sticking out of random rock. :P Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/262885-strike-force-unguis/page/2/#findComment-3241572 Share on other sites
Daemon2027
Another month another update... I have almost finished my Vanguard squad, just need a bit of green stuff, but here I present a WIP for something else. After reading the ebook Pray, and the short story The Unkindness of Ravens I wanted to add a chaplain to my small brand of battle-brothers. Here is the current WIP, obviously missing the right hand which will hold a crozius arcanum, and his jumppack, but I haven't decided on a head so I wanted to canvass the opinion of you good folk: Option 1: The traditionalist http://i1276.photobucket.com/albums/y471/Demon2027/Raven%20Guard/20121217_123207_zps2b730d81.jpg Option 2: Were called Raven Guard, we like bird skulls... http://i1276.photobucket.com/albums/y471/Demon2027/Raven%20Guard/20121217_123354_zps29e4e19d.jpg Option 3: 'GGRRRRRR, I am angry' http://i1276.photobucket.com/albums/y471/Demon2027/Raven%20Guard/20121217_123107_zpse8a2d910.jpg Oh, and the reason for all the bionics is because in my mind, it makes him look more badass. I'm not sure on whats going on with the right hand. I was thinking he may be clutching a handful of corvia (the Raven Guard skulls they decorate their amour with) taken from his dead brothers, as he prepares to strike vengeance against the enemies of the Sons of Corax. muggs
Defo option 2 - those two books are awesome, option 2 looks like how I would imagine the Chappy in them Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/262885-strike-force-unguis/page/2/#findComment-3263356 Share on other sites
Olis
Given the theme of the army, I'd pick option 2 too, even though I think option 3 looks a teeny bit more awesome. Biohazard
Option 2, definitely. That will be a very bad ass looking Chappy. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/262885-strike-force-unguis/page/2/#findComment-3263365 Share on other sites
Daemon2027
Option 2 is looking like a favourite then. Do you think it would look good with the beak section painted as bone? Almost finished the last 2 Vanguard Vests, just need to tidy the green stuff filling and add a few corvia. Both wield thunderhammer and stormshields. One day I may expand the unit with a couple more lightening claw guys, just want to move on, start painting these guys and put together some scouts. http://i1276.photobucket.com/albums/y471/Demon2027/Raven%20Guard/20121217_154450_zps74618544.jpg http://i1276.photobucket.com/albums/y471/Demon2027/Raven%20Guard/20121217_154434_zpscbaeefd7.jpg The unit together: http://i1276.photobucket.com/albums/y471/Demon2027/Raven%20Guard/20121217_154320_zpsa830b2ea.jpg The observant amongst you will notice a change in their jump packs. This was because a normal jump pack wouldn't fit kneeling guy, so I gave him a heresy one. It would look a bit odd if they all didn't have them so they all got changed. Fluff wise I think it still fits, they are vets so have access to the entire armory, and I imagine that the Raven Guard probably had something of the equivalent of master crafted jump packs. Maybe they run silently or something. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/262885-strike-force-unguis/page/2/#findComment-3263439 Share on other sites
Olis
They look great. :) Option 2 is looking like a favourite then. Do you think it would look good with the beak section painted as bone? Yes. Straight up, flat yes. I've seen it done before to great effect. Daemon2027
Ok excellent. I'm 99 percent going head 2 then. I do not think I will attach until I have the right arm sorted. Unknown Chronicler
these are the best Raven Guard Vets I have ever seen, the posing is very dynamic and gives them a certain fluidity that most GW minis just do not have. Keep suck beautiful minis coming, they are truly the best I have seen so far! Daemon2027
Cheers for the extremely kind words. I have got all the bits to finish the chaplain so will try and get it finished over the weekend. I was thinking for the head, option 3 (the bare head) with option 2 attached to his side. I have managed to get some paint on a model. I was worried about how enjoyable painting black would be but its not been to much of a chore so far. I found adding other colour such as the white first really helped break down the model. Not sure what will happen when i get to the plainer standard marines. Anywho, here is where I am with the captain. The bulk of the model is done, just need to paint the purity seals, the sword details, the front of the shield (which I decided to glue once i painted the back, time will tell if that was a mistake), and the little details, and finish the jump pack. I want to try and keep the jump pack thrusters dirty near the bottom and cleaner at the top. I don't really consider the metallic areas done but I really don't know how to paint a good metallic effect. I was also thinking off trying a bit of a glow effect around the eyes. As they are quite dull it wouldn't be a big effect, I just think it might add to the idea of the hunter. Thoughts? http://i1276.photobucket.com/albums/y471/Demon2027/Raven%20Guard/20121219_214554_zps8c177619.jpg Here's a pic of the side. He is supposed to be the captain of the 8th assault company, which coloring is, I believe, grey. Do you think I should make the gold ring grey, or keep it gold? If gold, whats the best way to paint gold? http://i1276.photobucket.com/albums/y471/Demon2027/Raven%20Guard/20121219_214617_zps6163103f.jpg Thanks for looking. Daemon2027
Spent some time finishing the model off. Think I have sorted my metallic problem with a little help from gw (OK i went into a store after work and asked one of the staff to help). I decided to try weathering powders now I wasn't sure what I was doing, and i made a bit of a mess of my desk, but I think it has come out OK. Any tips on using the stuff would be appreciated. I may need to put a bit more white on the shield. Anyway c&c always welcome. http://i1276.photobucket.com/albums/y471/Demon2027/Raven%20Guard/20121220_172609_zps9fc0eaf0.jpg http://i1276.photobucket.com/albums/y471/Demon2027/Raven%20Guard/20121220_172718_zps78e7a1ec.jpg http://i1276.photobucket.com/albums/y471/Demon2027/Raven%20Guard/20121220_172654_zpsd2c67485.jpg A top shot of the jump pack to see the mess I made of simulating a mess. The chapter symbol has got a bit messed up unfortunately, will try and fix that. http://i1276.photobucket.com/albums/y471/Demon2027/Raven%20Guard/20121220_173053_zps19516c61.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/262885-strike-force-unguis/page/2/#findComment-3266026 Share on other sites
The Yak
Great work Brother!! You have some excellent models here. I like the theme you have set and also the little story about the trooper with pride issues. (No matter how much of a hero you think you are the Chapter comes first). Your Vanguard are top class. Although expensive in points I think Vanguard really give you an excuse to create some Bad Ass miniatures. Who cares about points and game winning armies its all about the coolness for me  Talking of cool.... http://i1276.photobucket.com/albums/y471/Demon2027/Raven%20Guard/20121217_154434_zpscbaeefd7.jpg This guy nails the lot. The weird thing is (I know no one will believe me now) but I have been working on a similar miniature using the Coteaz hammer and a necromunda arbite shield. Although he is not in as good a pose as your dude. Its the relaxed hammer arm it just says "are you really sure you want a piece of this?" I love the paintjob on your Captain, the white does not look too bright or flat and really works with the black. I like the little bit of gold as it shows he is a leader without being to blingy. All in all he is perfect for a Raven Guard captain. More please Cheers The Yak Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/262885-strike-force-unguis/page/2/#findComment-3266187 Share on other sites
Daemon2027
Thanks, I don't mind you stealing my pose, the Raptors our are little brothers after all  I feel a relaxed weapons arm like in the model you quoted (and that you have created yourself) helps to creat a sense of built up energy, like a bird of prey waiting to strike. Which is perfect imagery for these chapters. I'm not really building an army to game with (it might happen but I haven't played Warhammer in 10 years) so I'm just going with what's cool. I use the codex as a fluff guide to build my models in a sort of 'this is what they have available'. The idea behind the Vanguards is really cool, same with the Sternguard. If only command squads could take jump packs, then I would be in eerrmm where do people go when they die in 40k. Emperor heaven? The Yak
I don't know I think they just hang around in limbo until GW decide to bring them back from the dead to sell more mini's (ooh feel the claws coming out haha) If you are not going to use them for gaming I would just go ahead and do a command squad with jump packs anyway. I always think that if it looks good its worth doing it. I could certainly see the Raven Guard taking to the field like this. If you do end up using them in game you can just say its a normal assault squad but tell your opponent he is not allowed to kill them because you spent ages on them and he would be well out of order if he did. Sounds like it would be the perfect HQ for your insertion force. PS: steeling pose, little brothers!! Haha its a good job I am not a dwarf! Daemon2027
At the moment I was thinking of a ground command squad to be a link between the fast moving captain and the slower ground troops. Or I may just jump pack them up. I could always magnetise the bits, although I have never tried that before. Olis
Great looking chappy, brother. Daemon2027
The shield is limited edition. If you put forge world boarding marine onto ebay the whole model will come up. They seem to go between £15.00-£35.00. Or possibly you mean the ones i used on the vanguard, in which case Olisredan has pointed you in the right direction. Daemon2027
Oh in the left hand I was thinking he would be holding some corvia hanging from rope or chain. I had the image that he was 'keeping' the corvia of fallen brother, roaring a challenge to the enemy to face him, so he can exact vengeance for said marines. Daemon2027
It's been along time since updating my little RG strike force but I have decided to make them the main focus of my attention from now on. Probably still be long time between updates though, as I have my first child on the way, but my wife was quite insistent I keep one project going (as long as I don't spend to much), and who am I to argue. Instead of finishing of what I already have, I created more work. First up some scouts: http://i1276.photobucket.com/albums/y471/Demon2027/Raven%20Guard/image_zps2f7c98a6.jpg With the exception of the kneeling guy, I'm not to happy. The scout sniper kit is not very flexible and I hate stock poses. The 5th member will be an old metal scout I got on eBay, and once he comes I may consider chopping up the standing 3. Next up, part of the strike force logistical team: http://i1276.photobucket.com/albums/y471/Demon2027/Raven%20Guard/image_zps45be4166.jpg Got lots of green stuff to do, tidying up the removal of blasphemous symbology, and the adding of some techmarine symbols.
