NCSUwolf's Dark Angels (Updated pics)

Hail brothers! I, NCSUWolf, have recently heeded the call of the Unforgiven, to bring judgement to the Fallen and server the Emperor (may he live forever).....

Ok, enough of that for now >.< As you all may have guessed, Ive recently chosen to join the 40k hobby and elected to command the robed brothers from Caliban as my army of choice. Just prior to the 6th ed launch I started with a simple tactical squad and have since then added two contingents of Dark Vengeance models to my forces. In eager anticipation of our new codex (Ive only borrowed a friends 4th ed codex a few times for my handful of early games to-date) Ive been feverishly painting what models I have.

Earlier this week I stepped forward on the Path to Redemption thread and have already made leeway on my oath with possible plans to take on further oaths as my first is near completion. Id appreciate any CC that you all may have on what Ive done so far.

Without further adue, here's my force of Unforgiven so far:
Newest PTR Entry:

Ive been mulling around possible lists from this bunch and what I'll likely add to the mix as far as new models. I might even toss up some bat-reps for you all to see how I do (alas Im still learning and my record is something like 0-5 at my local store but Im getting better Id say).

For the Lion!

Great stuff! Your painting skills are very neat and solid. I love the deep, dark green you have on your tactical squads.

Man, I never realized how great 2 sets of Dark Angels from Dark Vengeance sets you up so well.

My only tentative recommendation (since we're getting a new codex soon and I don't want to steer you wrong) is to pick up a Terminator Assault Squad box or just some weapon bits from it, so you can make some Thunder Hammer & Storm Shield and Lightning Claw equipped termies.

Wow these minis look awesome!

Also welcome to the forums!

This is a good buy. What would be better is adding some magnets to those arms :)

Thank you both for the compliments, Ive been doing my best to take my time with these guys as far as the modeling and painting goes since it's my first start into the hobby and I'm not in a rush to field lower quality results.

I was planning/thinking of getting my hands on an Assault Termie squad or two as soon as I can (finances withstanding). I'm likely going to wait until it gets closer to the new dex/units release before I'll have the disposable income for upgrades (assuming I don't find anything on eBay or the like before then). Magnetizing their arms is also up on the docket.

These are very good indeed. Very cleanly painted. I'd recommend you drill out the bolter/plasma gun barrels as it really does make a difference to the 'look' of the final model. Needs nerves of steel I know.

Keep it all going.

Cheers

I

Here's an update with my completed (first) Path to Redemption vow for October:

Very nice start. Welcome to the Rock!

+1 to the recommendation from Isiah to drill the bolters - its a pain and I didn't do it for a long time, but its worth it in the end!

+1 to the recommendation from Elmo to wash the flesh to give added depth - again its something that took me a little while to cotton on to, but now I'm a wash-a-holic and do it all the time :P

I'd also give my own recommendation regarding the robes - If you give them a wash/shade of Seraphim Sepia, then a light drybrush of the original colour it will bring out the depth very nicely. Its not tricky to do, and certainly a lot easier than more advanced paint schemes with multiple layering and shading, but the effect is dramatic.

Oh, and finally, although I wouldn't normally advise spending money away from buying miniatures, you could check out the How to paint Citadel Miniatures book. It comes with a DVD, and although I bought it on a whim, I found it really helpful.

@facmanpob Thank you!

To all of the wash comments, Im not sure if my camera (Ive just been using the one on my phone ;) ) is picking up the lighting just right for either the robs nor the skintones. Ive already gone over both with Gryphon Sepia (the new Serephim Sepia wash from GW. Though light-dry brushing of the original is a good idea, I might try that to see if it makes the robes pop a bit more (and maybe the face too).

I agree too that I want to drill out the barrels as everyone's suggested.... Im just not 100% sure on what size bit I need, though my local shop is owned by a guy who does high quality commissions and he might have the tool on hand for me to borrow (he's been very helpful and an outright inspiration up to this point).

As a random update, after the success of my first squad's basing I've gone ahead and based the remainding painted models the same way and am now just in the process of painting over the sand (which, at the time of this post, has me at 2 tacticals fully painted and based, 1 DW painted and needing paint on the base and 1 librarian painted needing his base painted).

Second October vow complete!

Let the heretics and Fallen quail at the sounds of the Ravenwing, swooping in out of the darkness on steeds of steel and fire! Let none escape Squad Arion!

On a side note, I still would like to drill out the bolters (and possibly the exhaust pipes) but have yet to track down bits to do so.

Thank you brothers! I do appreciate the compliments, it helps keep me going in these dark times *cough*codex delays*cough cough*

As for what's next, more than likely I'll hold off for a few days until next week when I'll make my November Path of Redemption vows (likely I'll paint up my Company Master, Seraphicus, and the 2nd squad of Deathwing for the first vow, doing the 3rd Tactical and 2nd Ravenwing as a second if time permits).

My local GWS is starting a 40k league this next week which I plan to join. Basics are 1250-2000pt lists, play up to 5 games per week for 3 weeks with rankings going in for Wins/Ties/Losses accordingly. As Ive only played a handful of games this should be interesting. To that effect, here's my intended list (for 2k):

HQ: Ezekiel (Standard issue war-gear) (@170pts)

HQ: Interrogator-Chaplin (Plasma Pistol upgrade) (165pts)

Troop(1): 10man Tactical Squad (Plasma Pistol, Plasma Gun, Plasma Cannon, Melta-Bomb on Sgt, squad in Rhino) (250pts)

Troop(2): 5man Tactical Squad (Plasma Pistol, Plasma Gun, Melta-Bomb on Sgt, squad in Rhino) (155pts)

Elite(1): 5m Deathwing (Power Sword, 2x PF/SB, CF/SB, AC/PF) (250pts)

Elite(1): 5m Deathwing (Power Sword, 2x PF/SB, CF/SB, AC/PF) (250pts)

Fast Attack: 3m Ravenwing (Chain Sword, Plasma Gun, Bolt Pistol, Melta-Bombs on Sgt) (145pts)

Heavy: 5m Devastator Squad (3x Plasma Cannon, 1x Missile Launcher) (250pts)

Fortification: Aegis Defense Line w/Twin-linked Quadgun (100pts)

Total: ~1735pts

The general idea is to stick the Devastators on the defense line, their sgt manning the quad-gun; attach the Chappy to one of the DW squads, Ezekiel to the 5man tacts in a rhino and roll out. I realize it lacks the stompy feel of Deathwing lists and it'll likely have some issues in various match-ups but it should be fun. What do you all think?

I think that the simple act of replacing the Interrogator Chaplain (or Ezekiel) with Belial does wonders for that army if only because it gives you two more scoring units. Having only 15 scoring marines means that many enemies can simply try to play you to a draw with relative ease. 10 Terminators greatly changes that.
I would agree. Switching out The IntChap for Belial. Ez can still be used to buff the PA marines and then Belial makes more scoring units. Then you would have a few extra points, I think, to use to add some stuff to a squad, maybe DW squad by giving it an Apothecary for FNP or Standard for extra attacks.

Thanks for the comments brothers once again! I have been toying with the idea of putting in Belial because I do agree that the limited survivability and just quantity of scoring units is a concern. Ive avoided going whole-squig on a Deathwing army proper as I don't have the models and can't afford to invest in getting 3+ more boxes of Terminators in the near future sadly (though I do want to get at least one more asap to put my forces up to at least 3 units worth).

As for the league, they are allowing proxies (within reason) so I will more than likely try out a few changes, including running the Master of DW. As I could potentially go up to 2000(1999+1)pts, swapping the Chap for Belial and then adding a command squad is very possible indeed.

Im churning away at the DW squad with a decent pace. More than likely I'll have another 1-2 of them done today/tonight. All in all I've only 4 Termies and the 3 bikes to finish and ohh... 7 ish days to finish them

Note: Seraphicus' eyes are red, it's just hard to tell in that lighting. Also forgive the choppy looking image as Im still uploading the photo's taken with my phone >.<

November vow completed!

Im particularly happy with how the shoulderpads came out.

I know you said you didn't have money to buy multiple TDA boxes but something you could do is get a few DV DW sets online and then one Assault TDA box. should be under a hundred depending on where you live. If you need CMLs there are some easy ways to make them yourself.
