Guardians nurgle themed CSM (death guard, Pic Heavy)

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I'm a long time lurker on this forum and i recently started with chaos marines.

Because i really love the fluff and feel nurgle i decided to go for a death guard themed army.

Its been a while since i have been painting so I'm still rediscovering how to do it

I started with the DV chosen to test my paint-scheme.

Below is my first attempt.

C&C is more then welcome.

thanks, I'm still trying to find the right shade of green.

Did another one with bronze details. I think i like this one more because they stand out more then the boltgun metal details.

The green is a bit different on this one to.

I think it looks fine, but maybe just make them regular plaguemarines instead of calling them Deathguard, because as far as i remember deathguard are white coloured.

This also allows you to make up your own fluff if it suits you, but in the end Nurgle is smiling no matter what colour his followers wear :)

Death Guard were white during the heresy, but now they have become a more gangrenous shade:

Green is fine for 40k Death Guard. Lookin' good, Guardian! Keep it up.

Actually, that's not gangrenous. Gangrene is a dark, nearly black, necrotic rot (and smelly, don't forget smelly!), whereas that's a pale sort of green...

Yay for being pedantic! :teehee:

Okay, dumb jokes aside, when I read the thread title (and missed your name) I was thinking of a Rise of the Guardians themed Nurgle army. Undead Easter Bunnies and Jack Frost Zombies!!!

...Okay, now I'm done joking (it's a dull morning, cut me some slack). ;)

You're models are looking good there, and you've got great control. But I personally feel like everything is a bit too muted, so that nothing really -pops-. That's not necessarily a bad thing, especially not with Nurgle armies, but I feel some darker tones along the borders of the green segments (the sort you can get with a wash or some black-lining) could break up the model a bit. I see it on some parts of some of the models (i.e. the knees of Mr. Claws) but it seems absent in a lot of other parts

My 2 bits, and my 2 dumb jokes. :tu:

I would post the wikipedia article picture, but it is fairly disgusting. Mild cases can indeed be a sallow or even greenish hue.

I wonder if anyone with gangrene of any degree ever thinks of it as a 'minor case.'

I guess Death Guard would.

But to steer things back on topic (as an apology for leading them astray): now that I look at them again, the bronze is kinda bugging me (I know, I'm so picky!). It's clean and flat, sort of a dull monotone. It could use some dirtying up, or highlighting...probably the latter, but I can't really think of how such a thing can be done with bronze. A dark wash or two could probably have some effect, but that'd just dull the tone more, rather than make it look 'nurgley.'

Hmmm... ;)

Yeah, thats one of my main issues with them to. I will try to darken the borders a bit, i can see how that should be better.

I changed the metal parts to bronze for that reason to but im still not sure about it.

Its dwarven bronze with a brown ink wash and then a ice blue wash to create a verdigris like effect on the bronze.

Without that they just look a bit to shiny and new. I real live the blue is more obvious, it just doesn't show on the picture

I see you point tho. I'll try putting on some highlights and maybe try to find some pictures of decaying bronze.

I think i will try the metal borders again on my core troops and save the bronze for the more elite stuff, not sure yet tho.

Thanks for the comments and keep 'em coming :P

So today i finished my hellbrute (although on the picture i can still see some minor stuff i have to cleanup)

And i did some more work on my chosen.

The one with the axe has bronze shoulders so he fits in with the rest of the squad.

I also redid the bronze a bit so its less dull. I added i bit of shading to the armour so it would stand out more but you can't really see it all that well in the pictures

Looks like a lot of the issues are just in your photography. The ones that are in focus and properly lit (like the two guys behind Mr. Mace in the 2nd to last pic) look good. The dull lighting and occasional slightly out of focus shots turn all the subtle detritus dirtiness grime and gunk into just bland smears.

The Hellbrute is a horrid monstrosity, so good job there.

  • 2 weeks later...

Ok, so my first 20 cultists are done. The rest will be more zombie, Nurgle, decay looking but im quite happy about how the first ones look.

Cant seem to make good pictures tho, they look better in real life.

Duuuuuuude! There is so much brutal on that Helbrute I feel I should have to sacrifice 3 sickly newborns to the plague god before gazing on it again :D

Also, adding some really light touches of blue verdigris to your bronze would work really nicely and tie everything in very cohesively.

Keep it up man.

Tx, i'm quite happy with that one and i plan to paint a friend for him to play with in the near future.

I will probably never play him bit i just love the model.

There is verdigris on the bronze bit it doesn't show in the pictures. Maybe i should try and make it more obvious on future models so it stands out more.

My lord is ready, and i used a different glaze on the bronze. Don't know if you can see the difference tho.

Tx for the comments guys. So i'm done with the DV set (this set at least) and I'm happy with the color scheme.

So now i can start with the rest of my army. First up are 2 metal obliterators i was lucky enough to have found in a local shop.

I made my first attempt at 'sculpting' some boils and nurgly fleshy icky stuff.

Hope you like them.

awseome stuff, what is your green scheme / technique for the armour? Also, where are the DP wings from?

The wings are old dragon wings from warhammer fantasy where i added some battle damage and green stuff.

I actually made a tutorial yesterday for these i dutch. Here is the translated version for the armor.

(Maybe its better if this is in work in progress? feel free to move the topic).

Step 1: A black basecoat, i used the GW black primer

Step 2: A white drybrush so you get a grey/white effect. Important here is that your brush isn't to dry because you want a nice coverage of the armor plates.

http://i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa341/brechtdhondt/IMG_0178_zpsa20aa4a9.jpg

Step 3: This is again a drybrush but with camo green (i used the new elysian green here)

http://i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa341/brechtdhondt/IMG_0179_zps283d4813.jpg

Step 4: This is again a drybush but with Rotting flesh (I used the new nurgling green here) and if you want a light drybrush with bleached bone.

http://i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa341/brechtdhondt/IMG_0182_zps7c917671.jpg

Step 5: Wash with badab black

http://i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa341/brechtdhondt/IMG_0184_zps585dc0d3.jpg

Step 6: Wash met agrax earthshade. I used to use sepia but i like the earthshade better. Its a personnel preference i guess. The older ones are with sepia and the for example the daemon is with the earthshade.

http://i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa341/brechtdhondt/IMG_0185_zps4d3b56b0.jpg

That about it for the armor i guess. Its real fast and real easy and the result isn't all that bad.

Also its not a bad idea to apply you other base colors before step 5 because its harder to correct mistakes after the washes.

And here is the finished result.

Broken image links... ;)

Anyway, things are looking better now. The grime is looking much cleaner, in a way that it's more clearly defined...if that makes any sense :P

Image links should be working now.

I agree, they look better then my test models. Still a long way to go if i look at the skill some of the others here have :)

Here are my Nurgle berzerkers.

I intent to write some fluff for them and there leader (counts as Karn) to explain there role in the death guard.

They are a bit dirtier then the others and may have rushed them to much. All in all I'm quite happy with them.
