Origins:

Story of Death Legion started from a space marine called Stanfar. He was sent upon the road of absolution to the eye of terror to fight the enemies of the Emperor for one hundred years. During that time he witnessed how dozens of marines from different chapters died or were corrupted by foul powers of chaos. At the final days of his road to absolution he had already saw so many different chaotic events that would had easily drive even the most stubborn marine insane, but he stud his ground and kept his mind clear. A single day before the one hundred years were fulfilled, Stanfar's old friend Gallin died during the battle against chaos warband ,which drove Stanfar finally into creating his own chapter in the search of change. He had became fearless and nearly immune to corruption of Chaos.

When the time finally called for him to leave the eye of terror as his road of absolution had came to its end he decided not to return to his former battle-brothers, but instead he went onward to complete his newly set goal. He headed on terra to address an audience with the High lords. He spoke to them about the Road of Absolution and other punishments of the Imperium had laid for "corrupted" space marines of adeptus astartes. He show them new alternative way for handling marines corruption and miss-steps. He spoked for creating a chapter under his command until he falls and other one would rise to replace him to guide the misguided. He wanted that marines wouldn't just be sended on the road of absolution or in other places were they would simply meet suicide or be driven into madness by chaos or even worse... Instead he wanted to create a chapter where alternatively these marines could be suffering their punishments. When their punishment would have been suffered; they would have a choice to either to remain in the chapter to render their services for it or to return to their home chapters as newly reborn and cleased from corruption of any kind. There the High lords stepped in, demanding that other official's personnel would be the one to judge if the astartes was truly cleansed, pointing this task be holded by the inquisitors from ordo hereticus if this new kind of treatment was to be enstablished. Stanfar holded no words against this demand. After long and excausting debate the High lords agreed that Stanfar could create chapter of his in conditions that he finds and recruits atleast three hundred loyal marines at his side and he gets acceptions from different organizations and chapters. In addition he must have gain cooperation with Inquisition and ensured that Inquisition has the chance to judge his loyalty as well, even if that would be the end of his.

On the time when he was almost ready to make his leave to journey, he met an unpointed librarian named Saldin who agreed to join his chapter.

At first they headout for Ultima Segmentum where they went to aid of strike force from Raven guard chapter. Shortly after the landing Stanfar met the commander Vindoraf. They were sended to recover an imperial documents, but they were ambushed and cutted off reinforcements. They holded their ground against the forces of chaos for nearly two months until finally more raven guards arrived to aid them. Stanfar earned respect of the Raven guard chapter through this very battle, because of his leadership had guided them through it. After the battle Vindoraf and his small strike force joined Stanfar into his cause and he received his first acception from another chapter.

From the Segmentum tempestus Titanius, Falin, Estal ,Antonios and tens of others were recruited into chapter's ranks.

At next they headout to Segmentum obscurus, but on the way they stopped at Segmentum solar. At their time in there, their forces were joined by couple techmarines and their servitors assistances. a few months later they finally arrived in Segmentum obscurus. It didn't take for long before they picked up an distress call from a small marine force from planet Tarniok. They had been assaulted by Orks and their positions where fastly overrun. Stanfar decided to response quickly to the call and he changed their course to the planet. Stanfar, Vindoraf and few other marines were deployed on the planet's surface. Immediately they rushed to aid their brothers and not even for a second too late. When they got on the battlezone, there was only few marines left to fight for their lives. Among of those marines, there were Rafauldus, Strakos and Istramir. When they were rescued from the Orks, they reunited with their chapter. As Stanfar and his battle-brothers were about to leave, suddenly Strakos and Rafauldus shown up with other marines. They had gain promition to join at Stanfar's cause and they also handed an acceptions from Black Templar and Imperial fist chapters.

At long, at last. What took you so long? Stanfar said and laughed a little.

Time past by and Stanfar and his ''group'' grow bigger and bigger over time and he gain more and more acceptions from different various of chapters. Then came the time when Inquisition called for Stanfar. They had their questions and tests for him to show them that he was capable to take the chapter under his command and that his attentions weren't

For three days he was held for interrigation and testing, but he didn't shown any type of a breaking or doubt. No weakness or fear, but instead he remain sure-footed and clear minded. At the end of the third day Inquisition rendered its blessing for Stanfar as well as Stanfar had gain cooperation between them, but he returned to his brothers only until the dawn of the forth day as silent and mysterious as he had ever been.

"Good luck space marine." "Luck? I make my own luck, but may the Emperor be with you Inquisitors." Stanfar at the dawn of the forth day.

Two years after the meeting with the Inquisition, Stanfar returned to the High Lords with his five hundred loyal marines for his request to form his own chapter. He shown them all acceptions and blessings which were requested from him.

"High Lords. I now humbly request from you that I and my marines may call ourselves an proud chapter of the Emperor. That we could join among the other honourable chapters. That we could call ourselves as His Death Legionnaires!"

"You have proved yourself to us and to the Emperor. You have assembled that what we requested you to accomplice. So you may rise legionnaire Stanfar, The chapter master of the Death Legion! May the Emperor guide your way!"

"Thank you High Lords! May the Emperor guide us all!"

After being promoted as chapter master and finally gaining his own chapter Stanfar faced new kind of challenge. He had to find recruiting world for the chapter, but from where?

For a few years the chapter wandered around the galaxy doing their duties as Legionnaires and also trying to find home for themselves. Eventually they wandered at outer rim of the Segmentum Ultima and they arrived at the space port of Stardium to make repairs on the chapter fleet. At their time there Stanfar met the planetary governor Granton. After negotiations it was agreed that the Death Legion could call the Stardium as their recruiting world, as their home, but it wasn't that easy in the end. The Stardium was also home for an massive Ork clan. Those foul xenos must die, for that the Stardium could be reliable recruiting world and it wouldn't be under the constant threat of ork waagghh. The Death Legionnaires were deployed on the planets surface with regiment of the Imperial guards. The battles were fierces and bloody, but the Imperial forces pushed the ork backward at all fortiers, eventually driving the orks back to their main stronghold. The stronghold were quickly sieged. Althought the high pressuring and bombarding at the Ork hold it didn't fall, until one night Stanfar gattered twenty of his most loyal and fierces battle-brothers at his side (They were started to be called the Angels of Darkness at the later days and ultimatelly the Angels of Darkness began to be the chapter highest elite warriors.) and they assaulted the ork stronghold by deep striking inside the defences. They assaulted the Warboss Titan killah and his nobz directly. The fight was cruel, but either side didn't gave up.

The battle turned at the legionnaires favour, because of their more united battle methods. The ork clan fell when Stanfar sliced the Warbosse's head off for the beasts shoulders with his relical blade. The clan fell into disarray and it started to flee, but they were cutted of from the escape routes and killed to the last. Stanfar had accompliced his dream. The Death Legion was now able to join at the side of other chapter as an equal. The chapter was born.

"Battle-brothers this day is ours! Today we have gain our home and we shall defend it to the last man! To the last Legionnaire! So if the our enemies want to come and destroy us, well... Let them try!" Stanfar at the end of battle against the ork clan.

Primarch and Gene-seed: Unknown

Home world:

Stardium is located at the outer rim of Segmentum Ultima. It has two moons, other is frozen planet with temperature of -30 degrees in minimum all the time upon the moon's surface. However below the frozen surface lies the manufactorums of the Stardium, which products weapons, ammonitions, armours (infantry and tank) and other working tools.

The other moon is then a whole different story. The moon itself is minorly populated, because a Necron tombworld lies under its surface (reasontly founded). For that reason it is constantly under surveillance. Its surface is used for agri-culture purposes just for the fact that it is a perfect for it.

Stardium itself is a Feral world. Its population level is about million residents. This brutal and unforgiving jungle world is suitable home and recruiting world for Death Legionnaires. Only high tech places on the planet are the Imperial hive-city which includes the space port, the governor's palace, Imperial guard strongpoint and the Death Legion's Fortress monastery: Defensor Fidei or in other words Defender of the Faith.

The Jungles are merciless places, where even the space marines have tough times to keep alive if he is alone. The population is splitted in many different colonies, but there is no rivarly between these colonies, but instead they communicate, trade and help each others out. The civilians are tecnologially at the pre-states of using gunpowder, so they use mostly iron or stone tools and weapons. They do a lot of physical work so they are naturally strong even the younglings. From these younglings the Death Legion gets their recruits. There are three major colonies (new recruits usually came from these colonies) on the planet and the a dozen minor ones.

Chapter Organization:

Death Legion chapter has been organized into ten companies by the codex astartes, including one veteran company, four battle companies, four reserve companies and scout company. Chapter command includes the chapter master, chief librarian, high reclusiarch, Ten captains and The Grand angel, who commands chapter's elite: Angels of darkness.

Combat Doctrines:

Battle cries: Show them the fury of legionnaires!

Some Notes:

There are a lot of grammar and spelling mistakes throughout the post, which makes it difficult to read in some places. I would suggest cleaning it up and you may get more readers/responses. :o

I'm not sure about the whole "One Assault Terminator getting his own 'chapter' to command." This sort of thing only has happened once, with the Disciples of Caliban, which is believed to have been requested by the Chapter Master of the Dark Angels; there is a lot of controversy surrounding their founding so I'm not sure Stanfar deliberating with the High Lords is believable.

I think there are other problems with believability as well. Stanfar saying he has found a 'cure' for Chaos taint is near unbelievable. I would believe the Inquisition would quarantine him immediately upon his arrival and possibly execute him, citing taint from the Eye of Chaos had driven him mad.

There's some problems with battle brothers leaving their respective chapters to join the Death Legion. This sounds a bit like betrayal. They aren't leaving their chapters to train a new chapter, or join an elite force, like the Deathwatch; both which allow the Marines to rejoin their chapter.

Take a look at some of the resources here in Liber. They are a huge help!

I agree with everything Nicili said.. Though I'm willing to overlook the spelling/grammar for now. Several revisions down the line may hold a different verdict.

I thought I would add some useful knowledge but decided instead to let those who said it best be remembered. I'll say this though.. if I had to label your chapter idea, I would consider it a MarySue.

B&C's Unofficial DIY Guide

I Need Less Cowbell! - Toning It Down In the Forty First Millennium

Everyone wants their Chapter to be engaging, powerful, and eye-catching enough that they will stand out from the sea of ceramite. The issue that must be avoided if you want to productively make use of the Liber is one of scale, however.

It's perfectly acceptable for your Chapter to be genetically engineered, immensely powerful killing machines that do the work of the Emperor until they're either incapacitated or dead, since that's what an Astartes is. The problem arises when people try to write too much awesome into their creations and make them something which rivals or even exceeds the already published material in terms of scope and scale. Balancing between what you find a cool and appealing idea and what the community finds to be overwrought and Mary Sue can be a difficult line to walk, but it's generally best to tone things down if there's any doubt in your mind.

A quick and dirty way to test your ideas for failing this aspect of writing an article is to compare them to the established Chapters, then to ask yourself whether or not the characteristic you want to keep would make them known galaxy-wide. For example, claiming your Chapter has thirteen companies because the Space Wolves do... Or my Chapter has well over the Codex-sanctioned amount of Astartes, like the Black Templars; ideas like these are against people's perceptions of the W40k universe. Chapters like these have been around for Ten Millennia and have a great deal of standing and political clout within the Imperium due to their efforts during the Heresy. That shields them from consequences that your Chapter will not be safe from. Always remember that, unlike GW Chapters, your Chapter needs to fit within the Warhammer 40,000 universe rather than making the universe around them. This includes adding your Chapter into Campaigns that have already been established by Games Workshop, it may work on the rare occasion - but why wouldn't GW mention them in their texts? See, we're back to that all important 'Why' again. The main point to take away from this ramble is that you're not Games Workshop designing a new Chapter, you have to fit within the rules of their Universe, not shatter their rules to fit within that universe. If you can honestly look at what you've written and say that they're not so powerful or unusual that even hiveworlders would know about them, then you might have hit that sweet spot. We're not the Chapters of Legend and our writing should be aimed accordingly, since we cannot be better or more visible than they are.

Trust your instincts. If it seems too super, it probably is.

The Octaguide 2.0

Do not destroy the shared universe

Try not to do things that narrow down grey areas of the fluff (like pinning down founding dates, setting a number on something previously un-numbered, or explaining what an official organization's view is in regard to something not immediately related to your chapter). Half the fun of writing an IA is making it fit into the existing GW universe and, speaking personally, half the fun of that is making it fit with everyone else's attempts to do the same thing. The more things you dictate about the way the universe works that conflict with someone else's preconceptions, the harder it becomes for other people to see your chapter and theirs running through fields of flowers together. And if I can't see your boys and mine cleansing a Space Hulk together (or swearing to eternally hate each other), why would I want to comment?

Do not overgild the lily

You should also ensure the chapter is not too different. As a general rule of thumb, if their differences cannot be explained simply and quickly, your chapter is too different for easy acceptance by people in the Liber. Notice the way quirks were expressed above - that's a pretty good base to start from. The logical implications of a quirk will fill an IA quite full without any further additions. The chapter should fit into the universe while still being unique. It is a careful balance, and can be difficult to find (not least because it lies in different places for different people). As another good rule of thumb, if you're breaking more than one of the cliche suggestions in the Liber Astartes DIY Guide, you're trying too hard.

A chapter with a dark secret will be able to have more depth and character than a Cursed Founding chapter with a dark secret, five home worlds, a secret weapon, a secret mission from the Inquisition, three battles which nearly destroyed the chapter and lead to massive military reforms each time, a lost Chapter Master, traitor gene-seed, and who worship the Emperor as a Chaos God. Exploring a few ideas well is always a better choice than exploring many poorly.

Thanks for your advices guys!

Now at first I have to apologize for my spelling errors, this is an old fluff that I worked upon about year ago and there are lots of spelling and typing errors. I'm fixing them up as quickly as I can so sorry about it. ;)

Firstly I have to point out this that Stanfar haven't found a "complete cure" out from the corruption of chaos, but instead he created an alternative way to include to those, which already exists like road of absolution and so on... Although this part is still under development. Also it is not their decision in the end to say if one has been "cleansed", but that's where the inquisition steps in their part of the cooperation, which Stanfar established between Death Legion and Inquisition. Their inquisitors give the final word if one has been "cleansed" or he's beyond saving at the end of purification process.

Hmm... You're actually right about that, should he be like captain or force commander already in that point in which begins to create his chapter? (Although I will keep his home chapter as secret.)

There's some problems with battle brothers leaving their respective chapters to join the Death Legion. This sounds a bit like betrayal. They aren't leaving their chapters to train a new chapter, or join an elite force, like the Deathwatch; both which allow the Marines to rejoin their chapter.

Yes I know it sounds a bit like a betrayal or not even that little, but sense he doesn't have anyone with him except Saldin and couple others from the beginning, so how he would then gain new marines to join upon his cause? If you have a suggestion, I'm more than happy to hear... or read about it. :)

A question, why was Stanfar better than other marines to the point of not being corrupted? the way you said it "At the final days of his road to absolution he had already saw so many different chaotic events that would had easily drive even the most stubborn marine insane, but he stud his ground and kept his mind clear." he sound's like he is better, but why and how? thats just what i wanted to know

  • 3 months later...

Hello everyone I'm back now to do a massive changes to my Death Legion chapter and I hope I can count on your help along the way. :)

Now that I've finally returned to working upon this along with my fan made DL codex update (still in progress) and I have to say that oh dear there's so much spelling and grammar errors... I have to start getting rid of those immediately, although my english isn't still completely perfect! Then it is time to start removing old stuff and adding the new ones, hopefully making my chapter much better from now on.

Truthfully alone he wouldn't been any better than those who got corrupted, but he wasn't alone. Gallin was his greatest ally there and the person who showed him the way how to be truly a honourable and loyal space marine. I know I've left that out from the text, but just like I said above I will be adding and removing things to make it better. ^^ So the reason behind him to be better than them was mainly because of Gallin.
