A Salamanders Stormtalon, on fire!

Recommended Posts

I'm currently working on a Xmas present for a friend of mine, a Stormtalon Gunship with a much needed conversion work and a Salamander inspired colour scheme. As Xmas is approaching fast I put all my other project on hold, only a week to deliver this baby!

My main complains with the standard Stormtalon kit are the big, bulky weapons and that stupid looking frontal landing gear so I decided to move thinks around, extend the wings to make this bird look like... a bird and to move the missiles pods under the extended wings. If I had the time I would also extended the tail a bit

After many hours of cutting and gluing stuff the end result is this:

I put more pictures from more angles on my blog, here

For the colour scheme I decided to try out something different than the standard Salamanders scheme and today I did some practice runs:

The Talon is now primed and ready for painting, tomorrow is going to be a very long day!

Very nice work, brother, I like the extended wings. I'm sure your friend will be very pleased with this present. I'm also positive that style of flame will look quite impressive on the finished article. :P

Thank you guys!

@Olisredan: I hope so :lol:

Today I was able to complete the fire patterns on the hull! Took me all day but it was worth it i think. It's not 100% perfect but this is the first time I try something like this so I'm quite happy :)

What do you think of it?

Just a coat of satin varnish and for today the work is complete!

@prodicalxxi: thank you! :) I got many questions about how I painted the flames so I decided put a step-by-step on my blog: link

@Sinners Red: thanks! As this is, in a way, a unique model (since it is a custom conversion) I tried to make it more unique with the paint job :)

@Olisredan: thank you. that was one of my concerns, that it looked too much like camouflage and not like flames.

@Capitano: thank you! I hope my friend share you opinion :D

looking good brother

looks more like camo than flames to me, but i think thats due to the lack of big flat surfaces on the model if you catch my meaning.

even if it doesn't look like flames, it looks AWESOME!!! :D

@Toxichobbit: you may be right. I wasn't able to "draw" a complete flame because of the small size of the hull. If I'll paint another in the future I'll make a smaller stencil for the flames. I will also don't use the same direction for all the flames like I did this time around. On the wings, for example, I could have gone form the engine to the tip of the wing instead of going from front to back

@Wicced: thank you! :)

It may just be the camera flash, but it looks a touch on the yellow side - is this the case?

Don't get me wrong, the technique you've used is incredible - I wish I was capable of such things, but when I think Salamanders, I think dark greens.

Are there plans to give this a wash of green to deepen the colours (assuming it is actually yellow)?

In regards to your reply to Toxichobbit, I think following the direction of the wings would be a mistake - the way you have it now suggests (to me) great speed and flying through fire. I think having the flames on the wings at a 90 degree angle to the fuselage would ruin that vision.

@Melekharn: i took that picture with my cellphone without using the flash, i'll try to take a better pics tonight. Aving said that, I think you are right, the yellow "hot spots" are too, uhm, opaque, too solid so they draw the eye to them and yes, it's really yellow (Vallejo Model Air Yellow)

I think the problem lie not soo much on the yellow itseft but on the underling white flame outline that is too opaque: going over this layer the yellow is more bright than it should be. I'm toying with the idea to mist the first green I've used (goblin green) all over the flames to tone them down. My only concern if that I've already applied a coat of satin varnish all over that area.

About the flames direction: you got my original idea totaly right :)

Last night I painted the techmarine pilot, just a quick zenithal airbrush work with a couple of reds since it will be mostry hidden by the canopy. Just need to finishe the silver trims on the shoulder pads and some details on his armour and the control panel and then i could glue all the pieces togheter (canopy excluded). I will then try the misting idea :P

Hi guys,

tonight I could only work on the Techmarine so here it is:

Nothing fancy, just a quick zenithal work and some metallic details. Tomorow I will complete him with gold and shadows.

I was able to take some better pictures of the flames, so here they are:

While taking this pictures I spotted some mistake that I need to fix or maybe hide under a decal lol

Looking good, although that techmarine will need to be tidied as you go, there's a bit of overspill from the silver onto the red. Also, there's seems to be a large chunk taken out of the plastic near the back of the cockpit - a shame really as it's the only real flaw I've spotted so far. :)

I probably should have added that your original render of the flames on your practice run were stunning - they came out as something not quite flames, but close enough to make you think of flames but also think of scales. Perfect for the Salamanders.

I'm not convinced about changing direction though - having the flames travel one way on the body and then another way on the wings might look a bit muddled. Personally i think taking them all in the same direction was the right call.

@Olisredan: yeah that was caused by a gluing error: i glued the top part of the cockpit to far back into the main body and the lower cockpit section whould not fit in so I had to "unglue" it. But that section would be hidden inside the main body so I'm not worried about it. I'm gonna clean up the marine after I finished the gold parts so I could correct the mistake I made there too lol

@Toxichobbit: your scale comment as given me an idea for the hull of a land raider or rhino if I ever get to paint one of those

You may be right about the flames direction. I painted them that way to keep them consistent on all the model. Changing the direction according to the surfaces will give me better flames but I'm not sure if that will look right

Leave it as it is. It looks great atm and if the small flames thing doesn't work you'll be kicking yourself. If you really must find out, always try it on something other than the model your painting on first. :D

After some experimentations I found the correct color mix to bring back the green and still maintain the highlighting effect of the yellow layer.

This is the obligatory "before and after" shoot using the two engine/wing assemblies:

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-TUFrefuL-2s/UNN0NaT4LPI/AAAAAAAAAW0/9V3pUjhBCv8/s1600/foto%201.JPG

And this is the main body of the talon:

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-H-3LcLf-BC4/UNN0adU4yDI/AAAAAAAAAW8/re7XFv7MvmU/s1600/foto%202.JPG

I used a mix of around 4:1 of Vallejo Game Color Fluo Green and Vallejo Gloss Medium heavily thinned

Now I just need to wait for this first coat to dry before do the same on the underside

What do you think?
