Metal model cleaning

Recommended Posts

I have some old models that I bought multiple years ago but never assembled or primed. Now, they are looking rather pale as they are covered with some sort of - corrosion, I guess. I tested, and it does scratch off with a paper clip. Does anyone have experience with this? Can I afford to ignore it and just prime and get my work moving, or do I need to clean it off? Any tips on best methods for cleaning, if that's even needed?

Pewter (or just plain old pot metal) used for casting miniatures is mostly tin which resists corrosion from air and water. What does oxidize will actually seal the outer surface of the metal because it is denser than the original metal. So the stain you see is no big deal. Just wash as you normally would to clean the surface from dust, skin oils and dirt common everywhere but don't sweat the stains too much.
