Impressive ... Most impressive. That is one fantastic looking Valkyrie. How did you do the weathering? I especially like that and want to try it on my own Valk if I can.

Bravo!

I dont post a lot here nowadays, but do read/follow some threads. Like this one. :biggrin.:

Really nice! If I'd ever buy and paint a Valk and it would turn out half as good as this, I'd be as happy as a Guardsman with a cup of recaf and a lho-stick in the morning.

Allright, back to lurking... :ph34r.:

@scatmandoo: Thanks very much :)

@Nicodemus Dolorosus: Can also be used for tanks by changing the direction of the brush to simulate the paint damage and oil stain. Drybrush matt black starting from the wing edge and drawing it in one smooth motion in the direction you want (ie towards the rear to simulate flight wear). Repeat with slightly less boltgun metal then again with less chainmail.

For the dirt I use burnt umber oil paint. Use a normal brush to paint a line of umber along a hinge or armour joint. Allow to dry off for about an hour then, using a drybrush, again draw the brush in the direction you want the dirt to flow. The oil paint takes a lot longer to dry and mine has been known to still be wet after a couple of days but using a hairdryer can speed it up.

@ Kierdale: They are not magnetised at the moment. The bolters are glued to the torso then they simply slot into the swivel on the mount. I may magnetise the mount later if this does not work out so well.

@Flint&Steel: Thanks, now get back to your lurking but make mine a double recaf with extra foam :ph34r.:

@WarriorFish: :thanks:

Next up is another Leman Russ BT and a Chimera. Both magnetised (of course ;))

Apologies to whoever it was who asked on another thread but I just can't find it so I will post it here...

I use Rico Design Bérgamo Burnt Umber (no. 7021.200) in a 60ml tube.

New on the painting desk...

The work so far on the magnetised Leman Russ Battle Tank and Magnetised Chimera

Lucky I religiously check this thread! How do you find oil paints, what are their strengths and weaknesses in your opinion?

I can only speak from experience of using devlan mud and Agrax Earthshade prior to switching to oil paint.

To quote from Imperial Armour, Model Masterclass, Volume one, Page 9

Oil Paint

A traditional form of paint used by artists. For model painting it is primarily used with white spirit to make washes. A characteristic of this type of wash is that it can be manipulated, removed (with more white spirit) and blended because it takes a few hours to dry. It adds richness and depth to shading.

Advantages of oil:

Far cheaper by volume (60ml oil 4-5€, 12ml GW 2.50-3€)

slow drying so easy to work with

Can be mixed with weathering powders for additional effects

Disadvantages:

You ideally need separate brushes

Slow drying so you have to be patient (can take up to a week to be fully dry)

Technique from IA

Using oil paint

A thinned mixture of oil paint was painted in and around all rivets and details.

The thinner in the oil paint was left to evaporate, this took about an hour. A hair dryer can reduce this time to less than a minute. The remaining oil paint was then softened and blended into the vehicle's surface with a small dry brush, a small amount of clean white spirit was used to dampen the brush. Extra thinner is not usually needed because of the gloss surface allows the oil paint to be easily manipulated until the paint has fully cured.

The oil paint was dragged and blended downwards recreating the effect of rain streaking.

I would recommend giving it at least a try. It has vastly improved my models.

I'll hit up an arts and crafts store some time, thanks a tonne for the advice! My store owner has a couple of shop copies of the ol' Modelling Masterclass books that he's let me sit and look through lately, and I've been debating buying them for myself. Can't deny that they've taught me some cool techniques and helped my skills a tonne, and with some time to sit at home and digest it all, I think it would have some great effects on my skill.

Anyway, this is your thread, so I'll stop hijacking it. Keep up the good work Elmo, that Valkyrie has set a high bar for this challenge! :)

I always try something different, whether the oil paint, making my own rivets from the grains in a water filter or the latest thing - sponges ;)

I am thinking about converting one of my russes into a Destroyer/Thunderer using a little plasti-card but that is for a later project...http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/Warhammer-40000/Imperial_Guard/Imperial_Guard_Tanks/DESTROYER-TANK-HUNTER-COMPLETE-KIT.html

Back to the work in progress. Sometimes I hate magnets.. I spent last night painting all the weapons options for the chimera but at least that is done. Tonight I will mainly be sponging :)

Nice! Let me know how it goes, I've got a Russ I plan to do this to as well. :smile.:

Will do, but it may take a while to get around to as there are so many tanks to paint first....

I was thinking about turning the left over turret into one of these http://dow.wikia.com/wiki/File:Rt_ig_catachans_02.jpg

http://warhammer40k.wikia.com/wiki/Turret_Emplacement. I have just found this which gives references to IA books. Has anyone got the books and can check up for me? I only have IA3 :(

Found a base on eBay :smile.:

IAv1 is out of print. IAv1SE has no mention of turret emplacements and neither does IA: Apocalypse. The other three do have them but they are only listed for renegade lists... I don't recall seeing any bases, etc in the 2014 catalogue either.

The bases are OOP so I guess that they have been removed from IA1 version 2 and will soon be out of the other IAs. Shame really, maybe I will just end up with a spare turret which I could swap around with a Demolisher turret as the situation dictated.

Time for the usual Friday afternoon update...

Work continues on the Chimera and it now boasts a factory finish paint job. It just needs decals and then some weathering so it should be finished by the middle of next week and then I can work on the half built Leman Russ :ph34r.:

The Chimera is magnetised so it can have any of the weapon options in the box along with a removable dozer blade. After all, what else did you expect???

Edit: WF just pointed out that the MM seems to have been aquired from another kit - investigations are continuing but just goes to show how good it is to use magnets. I am now ready for MM on Chimeras in the next codex :laugh.:

I did steal the Heavy Stubber for my first Leman Russ, hence why the Chimera has not got one.
