Resurrecting my Dark Angels

GlauG

Recommended Posts

I dropped out of the hobby due to personal circumstances a few years back, so I think my Dark Angels haven't had any love since the "current" incarnation of my Doublewing were painted up for the winter Throne of Skulls 2010.  Since I never saw any point in changing that 1500pt list, I didn't really NEED to make anything new until the new book and models dropped, but now I have a number of new toys needing to be brought up to spec.  Having lost my first game with the new 'dex, I figure I need to give myself some more choices, too.

It's a bit sad that my local GW stores are both in shopping centres, as neither has any natural lighting.  I say that, because the green HUD part is painted in UV-reactive green, and literally glows in sunlight!

The venerable Brother Bethor was my first GW Mini when I started out (around the time Angels of Death, and Bethor himself, were brand new), so I had to have one in my army...  the banner's a High Elf banner that's been extended with putty, I intend to give it some freehand love, because I'm just not a fan of sculpted banners. :/  This isn't my original Bethor, that one's made of lead and has a broken standard pole.

My custom Belial, with new arms, since the SB/Sword of Silence is finally worth taking as a combo again.  Also, looking at him, his paint is going to get some touching up... In particular, the text on the purity seals looks awful to me, 3 years later.  I'm trying to re-sculpt the legs on the "Official" Belial model, but I'm not holding my breath.  I think this guy is more dynamic regardless, and it's not exactly hard to work out who he is on the tabletop, so I will probably just keep using him...  Incedentally, am I the only one who's had dubiously-cast arms?  I got a replacement FC Belial, and even though it was better, a load of the studs on his armour were still replaced with air bubbles.

Ravenwing Knights!  I wanted a unit of 9 to max out the Grenade Launchers, and have a bike-mounted Deathstar to stick Sammael with for fun.  Since the Dark Vengeance bikers have the same pattern Bikes as the Knights, and I already have several squads of regular bikers painted up, I decided all my DV bikes would get this treatment instead.  I even found something to do with the hundreds of plasma pistols you acquire and never use, as a Marine Player...  They've mostly got Grey Knight heads, or the "Knightly" looking ones from the old Ravenwing and Command Squad sprues, I am saving the Corvus ones for later projects. I just need to work out a source for more Corvus hammers...

No Pledges for me currently, as I have no idea when I will be able to get a decent setup for painting; I moved into a new home towards the end of last year, and things are still a bit of a mess!

Bit of an update... Here's the major one;

http://img838.imageshack.us/img838/4625/201301310024221.jpg

I still vastly prefer my converted Belial, but I think resculpting the legs to be pointed slightly outwards makes the whole mini look a LOT more natural.  Not sure what I will do with this guy though, might sell him or something.

Black Knights!  99% done, just need some tiny details (like grenades on the belts of the DV biker guys).  Extra hammers are press-moulded from GS or Aves Apoxie and re-carved back into shape.  Not perfect, but they will do for now.  I am especially pleased with the Rogue Trader torso guy (who has metal Ravenwing legs for extra retro!), he doesn't look as small as I had feared he might.

http://img688.imageshack.us/img688/2415/20130131001008.jpg

Just some detail closeups on the Knights.  Shows off the modded Plasma Pistol-to-Talons well.  With paint, I think they'll look fine next to their counterparts.

I got one of the first batch of godawful Finecast Sammaels, and was then given a replacement from the remastered moulds later on when I discovered my original was riddled with holes like tiny termites had attacked him!  Between the two, I managed to make a single full Sammael, but his freaking sword is far too slim to stay straight on either, so a Grey Knight Terminator NFS gets to stand in, pinned through the original handle.  Sammy himself separates into a few pieces for easy painting, too, and the book is wonky because it;s not glued....

So far so good!  Next up are either Tactical Marines or my Darkshroud/Vengeance, Terminators take a back seat as I have totally usable Terminators for most of the squads I want to field.  That, and I already know what I want to do to the Darkshroud's front hull...

Very nice GlauG! I do think that the conversion to turn Belial's knees outward more does make him look a bit better, but I still don't like the model that much. Very cool on the converted Black Knights, I think you made some pretty convincing Talons there. I like the all knight-style helms, I had a similar idea, and then putting the nicer beakies into my standard Ravenwing (mine are called Boneseekers). The HUD on the Nephilim is very cool!

Look forward to more!

  • 2 weeks later...

Despite years of experience, (i.e. despite the fact I should know better!) I managed to destroy not one, but TWO Land Raiders last night in a paint stripping accident.  I can't even bring myself to take pictures, I am pretty irked about this one...

Speaking of pictures of failure;

Two out of the three I own, broken on the sprue.  Totally unimpressed. :/

In better news, the Rock swells with new recruits to the Battle Companies;

Just need to get round to replacing the Codex Tactical arrow with something more Unforgiven-y.  I'm also quite tempted to have squads of Successors...  In particular, some Heresy-Era/Consecrators Deathwing Knights, made from Cataphractii Terminators, but that requires me to work out what I am doing with the arms, which might be a while yet.  Speaking of Consecrators;

http://img829.imageshack.us/img829/9029/201302120902391.jpg

A little refinement, and I can probably get away with calling them plastic MKIVs.  Of course, I should really get on with painting my vowed Black Knights and building the rest of my vowed Command Squad, but until I can get my airbrush set up, it's a real pain to do any painting here right now.

edit: Language, sorry.

Thanks for the kind words!

Well, this is the better of the two... It's like this all around the bottom 1/3 of the vehicle. I will probably just sand flat and re-plate the underside with plasticard or crack it open and replace it with a spare LR lower Hull I own for some reason, and see if I can pass off the mess around the sides as mud splatter, but I'm not hopeful. The other one was disassembled, and so many of the plates are warped beyond repair, but there's also some undamaged sections of hull so with enough Plasticard I guess there's a little hope. If I can get the general shape to some kind of state resembling normal, I will probably turn one into an Ares and another into an Achilles... the latter gives me an excuse to totally remodel the hull, after all.

If I thought I'd ever use a Land Raider with my Nurgle army, I would be all over that like a bad rash, but I Nurgl'd myself out with a scratch-built Defiler a while back...  I think my day off today is going to be spent bringing these poor machines back to a condition suitable for the First, like the stubborn git I am. >_>

So I decided to give up on the Land Raiders for now, and worry about them when I can get my hands on a few key bits (I have my three Crusaders for now, that'll do).

These guys will probably stay black... The question is, if they are Heresy-Era DW Knights, or Consecrators ones? ;)  Sorry it's a bad picture, but it's hard to take good photos of matte black...!

What are you using to strip the paint?  I swear by Dettol for stripping paint, never had any issues with plastic, metal or Forge World resin

Never tried finecast in the stuff though

...Argh, had a big long reply typed up and it got eaten by Firefox. Keith, I used to use Dettol but the sludgey oily mess it turns the paint and glue into was always a problem, and then I moved into using isopropyl alcohol or Acetone-free Nail Polish Remover to remove the goop from the otherwise-stripped models... Eventually I just moved onto just using the latter to strip the models in a single step, but the problem was that I bought the wrong brand this time after years of not doing it, and £90 RRP of tanks paid the price. :/ That said, bits and kits just restocked on Land Raiders, so despite my misgivings after my last order, I have tried giving them another shot for the pieces I need most of all. Fingers crossed, things will be okay.

Some good news!

http://img89.imageshack.us/img89/2650/201302151314341.jpg

These guys have had a bit of work and are now ready to join the hallowed ranks of the First Legio.... Chapter, yeah, Chapter. >_> Joking aside, I have plans to have squads from successor Chapters later on, but I'd like a battle company of Dark Angels to hand as well... Given that I have around 50-60 AoBR Marines and about 30-40 assorted DV guys gathered now, I figure I'll get there.

In other news, my Ravenwing did well last night, pretty much trouncing an Ultramarines force at 1850 points. 9-strong Black Knights squads are exactly as good as I had hoped, frankly. They've earned themselves a snazzy paintjob, and maybe some kill markings... Anyone know any good tutorials for painting black?

For black I generally use Adeptus Battlegrey (or whatever the new fangled name for it is) with 2 or 3 washes of Nuln Oil.

Finally got an airbrush setup of sorts at my new place, so my Ravenwing Black Knights got some basecoat loving;

Ravenwing
Veteran Sergeant included for comparison.  I'm liking how this dark
grey I've mixed up looks compared to a flat black.  Now the basecoat is done, the rest should be relatively forthcoming.

This reminds me of something from Band of Brothers...

Hmm... I had intended a productive day of painting, what with the LPC and PTR ending soon, but I didn't get half as much done as I had intended.  Spent most of the day messing around with my airbrush, and trying some shortcuts to zenithal highlighting...  Didn't really work out, as most of the things I am painting are black, and what HAS worked doesn't photograph well...

http://img838.imageshack.us/img838/4199/20130218013502.jpg

Ironically I think the Nephilim shows it better than anything else due to its scale.

I am loving my Consecrators/Legion Deathwing Knights, at least.  However, since they aren't part of my vow, they are taking a back seat to;

http://img42.imageshack.us/img42/9938/20130218012414.jpg

My Ravenwing Black Knights, who are shaping up okay.  I like how they look a LOT more than my old style Ravenwing guys, like the Sergeant you can see at the back... For some idea of what their colours are actually like, the RW Sergeant is Chaos Black, wheras the RW Black Knights are a multilayered grey.  I'm not sure I will have time for fancy highlighting on nine of them, but it is a goal for the future.  I could leave the black as it is, paint in the other colours and call it a tabletop standard, but I am a glutton for punishment...

http://img692.imageshack.us/img692/707/201302180126401.jpg

Speaking of punishment, sadly the zenithal shading on these guys didn't work out at all, so they just got a black wash in the end.  I want to have four 10-man Tactical squads to try running a Standard of Devastation gunline, but again, vow takes priority, I only gave those guys any attention because I had my airbrush set up.

It's nice to see that I am so original in my old age...  This is the Sergeant from the earlier picture, flanked by a pair of his spiritual predecessors from my DA army of the 1990s!

Hmm, had a bit of progress due to taking a sick day.  :/

I really, really loathe painting black, but at least I think I have the hang of how I am going to paint these guys now.  I mostly regret having chosen to paint 9 of them. >_>
