I need help with Sons of Horus army

Greetings fellow Legionaries,

I'd like to build a Sons of Horus army that makes good use of the Merciless Fighters rule but after the first steps I come to a stop and I need your assistance.

The first unit I assemble for that army is a 20 men Assault Squad, then I added a Praetor and a Primus Medicae both with Jump Pack to join the unit.

This look a solid unit for the purpose of Merciless Fighters but what should I add to the army?

Do you suggest to focus most on the army on the Close Combat aspect where Merciless Fighters takes place?

Personally I think a solid core of CC units supported by ranged firepower whould be the best choice.

I also considered a 10 men TDA unit but since the best equipement for them seems to be power fists they wouldn't benefit from Merciless Fighters.

If I'm nost mistaken models who strikes at I1 does not benefit from the rule, right?

Any help would be very appreciated. I really like Sons of Horus/ Luna Wolves armies but sadly I cannot find the proper inspiration for that project.

The army would be a 2000pts one.

Thank you for your assistance.

That's how I read it as well.  If you hit already before I1, you get to hit again.

I'd take inspiration from the HH books, just read the first chapter of the first book:

Big jump pack squad, Big terminator squad, a few Tac squads and then something for long-range support.  The long-range support is the thing I'm not too sure about, but the FW list seems to lean towards the Medusa, since it can fire indirect.  Hide it behind something and let the Nuncio-vox in the squad call in S10 support.

If I'm not mistaken Luna Wolves were famous for the wide use of Tactical Squads. So maybe fielding 20 men tact squad may help with both Merciless Fighters rule and fluff-wise approach ;)

I suppose standard TDA squads would be a better choice then Justaerin. That would give us some more points available for other units. What do you think?

Beside, would you put the TDA in a transport? Storm Eagle, Caestus or Spartan? All of them are quite expensive so I should see how many points left I have after the "core choices" have been made?

Just one last question: Do you think it's possible to convert medusas from the standard basilisk kit? I'm curious. If I can find the way to save some money and use it to buy cool HH Space Marine kits I'll be very happy ;)

I agree with Jimbo about merc fighters and Init 1 so that means less PF and axes.

But do u think that they make a strike with their same weapon? That's how I read it. So a power sword equipped guy would get an ap3 attack and LC would add shred to the attack.

I would say max your bikes, asm squads, and justarein. I think a 15 man squad of assault mahreens would be sufficient but your mileage may vary.

Use the bikes as I've suggested if u want to, so use them to harass squads, tarpit, and distract the guns that would normally point towards your asm.

I would prolly use two squads of justarein with multi meltas and combi melta or plas with LCs or fists (I know I just said to lessen it but keep them towards fighting dreads, Spartans, and siege guns...which most people seem to have all 3 in their lists)

Either have both advance footslog or one footslog and one deep strike bc they are incredibly deadly in the meta with the ability to score and 4++ save.

If u want some fluffiness, throw in Loken with tac squad locasta ( veterans plus apothecary vaddon) or take Abaddon with aforementioned justareins. Maybe try pride of legions or angels descent (err whatever it's called for hit and run asm) to make use of your main choices.

Try the plasma medicae squad and run vet squads for anti air and dual purpose for range and their additional cc weapons for merc fighters and fluffiness or despoiler squads (bolter,bp,ccw) for cheapness

I see your list as being this (but do a points run):

HQ

Praetor w/ the usual paragon digi(mon lol) lasers and JP and mayb invuln

Primus medicae w/ combi plas

Elites

10 justarian w/ 2 MMs and assorted combi weapons and fists

5 justarian (though cheaper in bulk so mayb bigger or not at all with similar above build)

Kheresnaught (u know u want one ;) ) } extra points can go here

Rapier battery} extra points can go here

Troops

15 Asm w/ assorted PWs or meltas if no points for rapiers

10-15 man asm squad w/ PW

8 tac support w/ 7 plasma guns

10 man tac squad

Fast Attack

5-8 outriders w/ power (maul or sword?)

5-8 outriders w/ power (maul or sword?)

I think this should be around 2000 points and the rapier and kheresnaught don't fit in the list really unless u want a CCW contemptor that can benefit from merc fighters IIRC and the rapiers provide a better static anti tank platform.

Don't do arty such as medusa especially with this list as it will either blast your own squads or steal their kills and make them less useful and SoH are more chop off the head than eradicate them wholes and completely (I'm looking at you World Eaters :) )

As for the spartan... I would leave it out of the list as it is expensive and a storm eagle would better benefit with alpha strike and unloading the plasma medicae squad.

Just my own two cents and salt and pepper to taste as always ;)

P.S. thank God I have someone to talk to on a regular basis about tactics and list building as everyone else and their dog (yes u Russ bois) is either talking about AdB being a total man or yapping about SWs it seems

That's how I interpretate it. When you reach I level 1 you count the models in combat if you have more models then your enemy every model who already made an attack is granted with an additional one using its own weapon. If a model has more than one weapon the attack is made with the one used before.

At 2000 pts I can barely field all of this ;)

I was thinking about Justaerin. They are much more expensive then standard TDA. They got WS5, Stubborn and furious charge but are wouldn't standard TDA a better choice. With 10 Justaerin plus the Praetor and the Assault Squad I have room for little else.

Praetor w/ the usual paragon digi(mon lol) lasers and JP and mayb invuln

I asked a question about Praetor weapons upgrades here on B&C and it seems he can exchange both bolt pistol and chainsword but cannot take the same weapon twice. So he can take Paragon Blade and thunder hammer... not bad ;)

I like the idea of the Storm Eagle.

Anyway I tried to write a "prototype of list"

Praetor with jump pack and wargear

Primus medicae with jump pack

Assault squad and a tac sqaud for the troops choices

TDA or Justaerin

Storm Egle.

This is about, not countin the tact sqaud since I have to see what its size will be, 1520 pts with TDA and 1750 with Justaerin. As you see there is not much room for anything else.

I thought about some alternative builds

A sort Assault Squads spam list. Maximize the number of Assault Squad and perform swift attacks

Or an Angel's Wrath list with Praetor+ Assault squad and tact sqauds on Storm Eagles.

What do you think?

Storm Eagle sounds good. Bikes sound very un-Sons of Horus, just from reading the novels. But I think they would be effective. As would be the big assault squads, although I think I like the Tac Squads better.

I plan to create a Medusa from a Basilisk, I'm sure others have done it, but I'll post when complete.

I agree bikes sound very un-SoH. Storm Eagles, Assault Squads (Catulan Reaver squads), Terminators and tactical squad (especially the additional CCW equiped ones a la Depsoiler Squads) sound very fluffy.

The problem is putting such concept togheter in an effective list. I'm still wondering if going for the Tact/Assault/TDA mix (Justaerin or standard?), assault sqauds "spam" with a tactical in the deployment zone or tacticals with an assault sqaud....

Let us know when you complete your medusa conversion. I'm very curious about it ;)

Hail Legionaries,

I finally wrote down a couple of possible list options. I'd like your opinion before writing the final version and post it in the army lists section.

The core of the list would be.

Praetor

Paragon Blade, Thunder Hammer, Iron Halo, Digi Lasers, Jump Pack and melta bombs (combi weapon if I'll have some spare point)

Primus Medicae

Jump Pack and refrector field

Assault Squad

20 men; 4 Power Weapons; Sergeant with pair of claws, artificier armour and melta bombs.

Once the core has been established I have the following options:

1. Add: a 10 men TDA unit Reaper Cannons and fists/claws, put them inside a Storm Eagle, a 20 men Tactical Squad with additional CCW (the famous despoiler squad), a 10 men Tact Squad with Legion Vexilla for holding deployment zone's objectives. I have the points for an apotechary for the despoiler squad. Total 2000 pts.

2. Going with the Angel's Wrath Rite of War and add: 2x 20 men despoiler squads inside Storm Eagles. This will leave me with 100 pts left or less depending on the Storm Eagles options.

3. Making an Assault squads spam adding: 2X 20 men Assault Squads. I will not have room for a Storm Eagle (235 pts available).

What do you think? Any other suggestion?

What do you think about dreadclaws? Are justaerin a better choice then Standard? What ration do you suggest for fists and claws? 6 fists and 4 claws?

Thank you for your assistance.
