Pride and hate. Abaddon VS. Loken

Recommended Posts

Yet another project started, this one isn't an army, but a diorama and as the title says it's FW's Abaddon and Loken kit that is the subject.

The plan is to enter it into the Danish version of GW's the Fang painting competition in April, so there's a deadline growing closer and closer.

Onto the kit itself, the models are gorgeous, but the display base is not entirely as I want it so that'll need to be changed smile.png

Here's the first WIP picture of what I'm going with, a more stylized version of the base included.

In colour.

And then in black and white to give a more unified feeling of what it looks like.

More updates soon smile.png

This is going to be epic. Go, tda, go! :D

EDIT: Not sure about the base, but it's not terrible or anything. It just looks like the whole thing is perched on that small brick wall. Maybe make the brick part bigger, so that it acts as a sort of plinth for the scenic base?

My interpretation of the base is that the brick section is just a glimpse into what lies beneath. Like an underground sewage canal or something. I think it's a well-executed idea.

Any alternations planned, tda? Looking forward to what you can do.

The base build is nearly finished, just need some finishing touches, but that's not what this update is about :D

I started on one of the 2 models that will be the real centerpiece of this.

Ezekyle Abaddon WIP:

Head before OSL.

http://i535.photobucket.com/albums/ee354/SteffenSJensen/Abaddon%20and%20Loken/abaddonheadwip_zps31058c41.jpg

And after OSL.

http://i535.photobucket.com/albums/ee354/SteffenSJensen/Abaddon%20and%20Loken/abaddonwip2_zps0c7e5fd6.jpg

http://i535.photobucket.com/albums/ee354/SteffenSJensen/Abaddon%20and%20Loken/abaddonwip1_zpscaaea008.jpg

I've been working with a polished black sheen for his armour, so I tried tackling the black in a completely new way to what I would have done in the past, it's hard to see here, but I'll go into greater detail when I get a bit longer in the process and can take some pictures that really shows off the work on the black.

I also need to tidy up some of the extreme edge highlights.

The head has been treated to some under lit OSL (Object Source Lighting) to give him a bit of a looming look, but I didn't want to overdo it as I think it tends to look cartoonish if his gorget is glowing like a big light bulb. I'm really pleased with how it turned out so far. I've mainly used the secret weapon miniature's washes I am currently reviewing for the OSL and othe parts like skin and metal shading and I must say I'm impressed so far.

This model is no less than amazing and it's so awesome to finally get to paint it, so expect another update shortly.

How do you plan to paint Loken? I noticed most people so far (and FW) paint him in his Sons of Horus colours, though i think i remember the loyalist SoHs changed back to their Luna Wolves black and white on Istvaan (When they found the time for that is another question).

Yeah I seem to remember that too, but since the model is covered in pristine looking SoH iconography I'm going to make him in his seagreen version :) Also I'm not a big fan of the Luna Wolves scheme, and I don't see how they should have had time or opportunity to change their colours, as there's no mention of any artificers surviving :P So it'll be in spirit, not in reality that he renounces his legion colours :)

Masterful work - cannot wait to see this progress.

Thanks man :)

A little progress:

The base is nearly done, I've made some covers for the back of the bases edges, which hopefully blends in well when painted.

This is looking sooooo good. :)

The face detail is great.  The color shading / OSL is just beautiful, and the way you have integrated the minis into the diorama base is just masterful.

This is fun to watch ;)

Thanks mate :D

A small but important update; I have found a green I like for Loken.

I originally tried matching the colour to the artwork in Betrayal, but for some reason I ended here and decided I liked it. It turned out it looked pretty similar in colour to the FW paintjob, which was either pure luck or my sneaky subconscious at work :P
http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/Images/Product/AlternativeFW/xlarge/lokan2p.jpg
The recipe for my result was fairly simple actually, the old GW hawk turquoise with a little bit of VMA burnt umber in it, and a few drops of Secret weapon's green wash. Highlights are made by ading VMA sand to the base mix and then when I was happy I gave the armour a glaze of Secret weapon's green black wash.
Choosing the right colours for the SoH is probably the biggest dispute in this hobby the last 10 nyears, so feel free to share your thoughts on my choice of green :D

And there's an internet cookie to the person who guesses what this is for :D And no, it's not a cape..

I dont know what competition you are going to be up against but they are gonna have to be on top of their game to stand up against this! I like your green a lot I thought that the FW paint job was too dark I always imagined the SoH green to be a paler bluey green, but seeing yours has made me doubt my imagination, curse you I used to be so sure of myself.wink.png Every time I see this model I always wonder how Loken kept his cloak in such pristen condition when his armour has clearly taken a beating... Oh and is it a... rug, no curtains, no hang on I'll get there soon its a...... flag. Am I too keen for an imaginary cookie?

Haha a little over excited for the fictional treat, yeah :P But it's okay :D

And thanks, I was not sure what kind of green I wanted until I actually did this :P and I'm pretty satisfied.

I honestly have no idea what the level of competition will be, but hopefully it'll be high :D

Super nice color on Loken. Really nails the SoH "sea green" we always see referenced. How'd you do the gold if you don't mind me asking?

Thanks man :) The gold is Vallejo model air gold, and on Loken that's all it is so far :P I'll be working on it with some washes and highlights soon.

Very nice so far...

BSS

Thanks :)

Really awesome work so far. I thought Abaddon looked awesome until I saw Loken. Very Impressive.

Thanks :) Hopefully the next update won't dissappoint then ;)

On to the update, there's a week left til the competition, and I'm pretty sure I'll be able to make it.

Loken's head:

Abaddon nearly done:

Abaddon and Loken at their current state.

The base as it currently looks:

And the mystery piece of felt was for this particular part of the plinth, to give it a bit of an exclussive feel:

Better get back to my workbench!
