Cheap shoebox paint-rack

Recommended Posts

I think this should maybe go in here, but feel free to move it somewhere more appropriate.

Anyway, my paints are always stuffed in a drawer on my desk, which means I can always find an excuse not to start painting - so last night I decided to build a paint rack so they were always out.

In addition, I cleaned up all the lids, thinned and stirred all the paints and had a good sort out of what was good and what had dried up into one blob.

The box was an old Converse box I had from my daughter's birthday, which was also good as it had horizontal lines on it to fold and cut along.

The front of the box becomes the base, folded down - That's the blue lines on the diagram below.

I cut a block of polystyrene to the right height to act as a support under the base (just in front of the writing).

You'll also need to trim the side flaps off the front panel, or fold them under as supports - i trimmed mine off.

The second level is a bit more tricky, as you need to fold the lid twice in the correct places for the lid to sit on the bottom of the box, and also sit flush against the rear of the rack - I got it wrong first time, which is why there's a fold through the logo. I used the back of a scalpel to lightly score the back of the cardboard, but be careful not to cut all the way through. That's theh dark red lines on the diagram.

I advise getting it all cut and folded first before you commit to gluing it together for strength - I just took the hot-glue to it.

And here it is all loaded up for action, with base colours a the back, then highlights at the front.

Skins on the left, armour in the middle and metallics on the right.

As the user before me stated, it's simple but effective. It's definitely given me some inspiration to make my own rack for my paint pots, although I'm thinking of doing something a bit more complicated. As and when I get round to it, I'll share photos of my own, along with how I did it on here.
