Guardians of the Covenant

Hey everyone, I've had the idea to start a Covenant army for a long time, with the dawn of the new Dark Angels book and Dark Vengeance I have had that chance. I started with Dark Vengeance a long time ago and have since painted about one-third of the models in my Dark Angels army. When it comes to the lore behind the chapter I don't really know too much other then what is in the book, but I plan on writing some up with the creation of each unit or character created, starting with my Company Commander who plays as Azrael during games;

Thanks, trying to think of a good name for him, only model from the new characters i wanted to use was Belial because I genuinely like the model, so like Azrael I plan on making new models for the characters and fitting them into my lore. Also I wanted to post a picture of the finished DV tactical unit, I finished them a while ago so Azrael's little friend isn't finished in painting;

I know none of these pics are good until I pull out the better camera, sorry :/.

Very nice start, good to have another Guardian around! :tu:

by the way, we've been going through the Successor Chapter fluff recently, so if you have time please feel free to stop by in this thread

:)

Great models, my only suggestion would be to do something with that black knee pad, by giving them a company marking.   I also notice a couple of your marines in the tactical squad still have a silver right knee pad, while most have the black knee pad.    Most of the successor chapters use the same company markings as the dark angels themselves, so it would give you a chance to add some extra color to the silver marines.

Great start so far.

I'm not very good with freehand, so when I get better I might go back and add some markings, and the one's that don't have a black right pad, actually have it on their left, kinda was half asleep one night when painting and did it by accident, haven't decided if I wanna go back and fix it yet.

I'll post a tutorial on how to paint this guy if you all want it, just gotta find the time to do pictures so ya'll can see the differences between steps.

Thanks for the link :D yah, I saw a like 3 year old Guardian thread on here when i was looking up Dark Angel chapters and went ooooooooooo.

Well the company markings are often times just stripes, or split colors at an angle, nothing to complicated.  Just look through the company badges and pick the easiest one, often times the 3rd company is the easiest as it is just a red strip across a black background.  You already have the black background, just needs a red stripe down the center.  I can understand about the freehand, it can be tedious, and not everyone can do it.  Having a good brush also helps, one that will hold its tip, and of course, practice practice practice.   Guardians of the Covenant are my second favortite color scheme for the successor chapters.   I just couldn't get over the hurdle of painting that much metalic, metallic paints, I use but I still don't enjoy using them, because of the flakes and they just seem to thicken up so much faster than all other paints.   I also love the red robes, I am using them on my Angels of vengeance, for everyone that is not in the inner circle at least.

Best of luck, look forward to following your thread.

Hmmmm... I'll look into the badges and see what I might do, but for right now I have finished the dark vengeance librarian and I think I have a good name for my chapter commander :D

Next thing I'm going to work on is my chaplain from DV and a unit of robed tactical marines I got cheap and will use as just a tactical unit unless I wanna make them veterans

Niceeee... I usually don't bother with GotC threads, as I find their paintscheme boring and lazy. I clicked on yours and surprise! I like them alot. Great job on the minis - and it comes form someone who doesn't like Guardians of the Covenant smile.png

I felt the same about that until I added some blue into the black highlights, because it adds some color without changing anything around and its not just black and silver.

Hey guys, now I have to show you my Dark Vengeance Librarian (just a Librarian, not gonna be a proxy for Ezekial);

An Interrogator Terminator Chaplain (to accompany a unit of Deathwing Knights);

And just a couple tactical squad characters with power swords and one has either a plasma or bolt pistol depending on need of use;

Hey ya'll haven't been able to sit down and work with my models or anything like that much over the past few days, but I'm wondering now if ya'll want a picture tutorial or a basic step-step list tutorial for how I paint the guys? If ya'll want a picture one it'll be probably done in a few days while i get a model primed and painted.

i personnally prefer tutorial with pictures, dont worry if its takes sometime, i only have n interrogator chaplain waiting for paint, go and tell him hel have to wait... i wont hel hit me with his mace...

i really like your blue black... if you dont mind when you tell how you did it i will steal it...

Make sure you have your storm shield on you at all time (I literally have a shield in my room for this joke)! And you can steal my entire scheme, I stole parts of it from an older thread myself.

How to Paint; Guardians of the Covenant (The Oceangrave Way) - PART 1 THE SILVER

STEP ONE

Okay everyone, well first you gotta find a model you want to paint and prime them in your favorite primer;

http://i1209.photobucket.com/albums/cc383/BlackDaemonxxx/IMG_20130326_123904_410_zps1ff7956f.jpg

I use Rustoleum All Purpose Matte Grey Primer, to make the general silver have a brighter tone to it and because its a thin easy to cover primer that doesn't ruin detail unless you spray too much.

STEP TWO

Start off the model's base tone with TWO Heavy Drybrushings of Leadbelcher Citadel Base Paint;

http://i1209.photobucket.com/albums/cc383/BlackDaemonxxx/IMG_20130326_124619_855_zps0aa96910.jpg

I find doing this gives it a brighter coat then just plopping it on and it doesn't even remotely remove detail, another good way to do it is use your local airbrush, I would use mine but I dont like putting metals through the air, don't know why, just not a fan.

STEP THREE

Now, after the Leadbelcher is done drying, go over the entire model with a lighter drybrush of Ironbreaker;

http://i1209.photobucket.com/albums/cc383/BlackDaemonxxx/IMG_20130326_124827_265_zps061ba054.jpg

I know the tone doesn't look any different on the picture (thanks to a poor phone camera) but I assure you, it does change the tone in the end.

STEP FOUR

Now onto some Strategic Drybrushing with Runefang Steel, only on the upper edges of the model, especially on the upper backpack, like on this Terminator;

http://i1209.photobucket.com/albums/cc383/BlackDaemonxxx/IMG_20130326_125032_446_zpseba1122b.jpg

NOW you can see the tonal change in the pictures, these steps seem simple, but after we wash the model itll help make the model shine without looking comical.

STEP FIVE

WASH TIME! I use Nuln Oil from Citadel (No, not all my paints are going to GW), This is the final step if you want the silver to be a generally good table-top quality;

http://i1209.photobucket.com/albums/cc383/BlackDaemonxxx/IMG_20130326_130658_393_zps2614017a.jpg

This part is a little more difficult because u need to stain the entire model's color without it pooling in the weird places, take your time to make sure it is lining the silver but not ruining all our work. (Be Aware, the wash isn't dry in the picture)

STEP SIX

Now, to make all my models stand out and look to be a really high table-top quality, if not closer to display quality, I will edge highlight if now blend highlight the armour with Ironbreaker;

http://i1209.photobucket.com/albums/cc383/BlackDaemonxxx/IMG_20130326_132008_442_zps785f7db1.jpg

This will make the edges and higher areas shine and stand out amongst the other silver that is on this model (like the vents and the bolter metal), wont really be visible on the picture above but after the FINAL step to this entire model, the "secret weapon" to my painting, it'll be obvious and beautiful.

NOW take some time to look over the silver and see any bits that you might've missed with the silvers, like I missed a small bit on the foot, cover it with some leadbelcher and no one will ever know ;P. Next section will be up later today and it'll be either the black or the golds, haven't decided yet.

will the paint do good with black primer?

Yes, it'll look just the same only the general finished tone will be alittle darker, I like my guys bright and shiny so I do it this way :D

and the 2nd part, I decided to do ALL THE DETAILS, since why not.
