Shadows of Sanguinius

Hi

I had the odd idea about a year ago. Blood Angels are space vampires. The fancy kind. I kind of like their

fluff, but I don't want to play an army that’s not my own. Therefore I made up

my own chapter, the shadows of sanguinius.

The shadows of Sanguinius are a fleet based chapter, originally created to hunt

chaos raiding parties and pirates, xenos or human alike. They were founded in a

recent founding, from the mother chapters gene seed stocks. The chapter was

first sighted some two thousand years ago when they ambushed and brutally

ahnilliated a chaos raiding party that stood ready to infiltrate a Hive for

slaves.

The shadows mainly operate in the northern part of the Segmentum Pacificus. Their astropaths and

librarians scan the immaterium after signs of chaos, and their numerous

contacts and spies warn them of pirate activity. When spotted, they watch their

enemy, learns their weaknesses, scouts out a good place for an ambush, and

strike from the shadows when the enemy least expects it.

The shadows of sangiunius are masters of nightly attacks. The pitch black darkness of the night are their

favorite kind of battlefield, letting them sneak up on their pray and then let

loose in a savage attack spearheaded by tanks, dreadnoughts in drop pods and

jump pack infantry, while devastators and snipers take up positions of support.

The Shadows are a fleet based chapter. It is unknown if they possess a hidden fortress monastery or

have a flag ship that acts like one. Each company acts like a fleet of their

own. As such they follow the codex astartes more as a guideline then a strict

rule, and company organization tend to differ from the normal disposition. Each

company is made up of 10 veterans, 10 scouts, 4 squads of tactical marines, 2

squads of assault marines and 2 squads of devastators, as well as a five man honor

guard, a couple of dreadnoughts, several tanks, 2 storm ravens and their cues.

This organization lets them bring everything they might need to the fight, to

the battlefield, although at the cost of greater difficulty in replacing

losses.

Since it takes a long time to replace losses, the fleets tend to work in

conjunction, with an understrength company being replaced as quickly as

possible and sent back for resupplying and recovering. The shadows have at

least 4 reserve fleets used to plug holes in the battle fleets. These

fleets/companies consist of the newest members of the chapter, still under

training.

The Shadows of Sanguinius are stable for a blood angel’s successor chapter.

Rumors of blood rites after a battle has risen in recent time, but has never

ben confirmed. In all of their blood thirst and cold brutality, it is

remarkable that they rarely cause collateral damage during battle. They have

also been seen to show an unusual concern for the common populace and have on

several occasions executed almost insanely daring attacks to free an Imperial

Guard unit in the risk of being overrun. Librarian Angelos Brutus of the third fleet was even overheard saying "the imperium

is not these manufactories or these buildings, it is the human beings living

under our protection" during a strategic meeting with the Imperial guard.

Black armor with red helmets and arms, and a red Aquila marks these nightly hunters.

Like all blood angels they enjoy artistic activities, but they prefer to keep

armor and weapons functional, simple and unadorned. War is the greatest art

there is. A battle is a painting. The blood of the heretic is the finest paint

there is.

So, what do you think? I

basically wanted a more military acting unit of space marines, rather than the

red marines with ork mentality. I also like the thought of blood angels

patiently stalking their pray in the dark, sets up an ambush and then let loose

with all the fury of the red thirst when the time is right. Somehow I think

that's how it should work... and ambushing is safer than simply charging head

on. A bit of raven guard thinking, but I enjoy applying it on my Angels of

Death.

Okay, when you said "Blood Angels are space vampires. The fancy kind.", I thought to myself ... OMG he's gonna do a Twilight Chapter.  I was glad to see you had not.

Only a few issues with what you've given us.

- A couple of Dreads per Company is alot for 1st Founding Chapters, and these guys aren't 1st Founding.

- A fleet based Chapter will have a Ship Monestary.

- That's alot of scouts.

Other then that, I like it so far.

Well you may be right about the drednoughts, although blood angels, and their sucessors have a lot of them. I don't think one or two/company is to many, but I may be wrong.

As for the scouts, well, the shadows don't keep a scout company. They bring a platoon/squad of scouts in each fleet. They are who does a lot of the stalking the pray routine before the battle.

Well, the Shadows of Sanguinius SHOULD have a ship monestary, but none have been reported. As such, no one knows where they keep their head quarters or where they recruit.

Glad you liked the chapter. Now I'm off to paint some more of my twilight marineswhistlingW.gif (seriously, modern vampires suck. Give me count Dracula, that's a real vampire! The predator kind, not the "ooooh I sparkle in sunlight and goes to highschool over and over again" kind...)

At first glance, they almost sound like loyalist night lords.  I am not sure if that was intended.

Well, I wanted predators. Based on how military operations may be run in real life. You don't go in guns blazing against a knowing enemy, you scout out his positions, find a weakness and exploit the hell out of it. I like the thought of patient hunters that try to find that weakness and turn the disadvantage of the red thirst to their advantage by defeating the enemy before the battle has even begun. Maybe that's Night Lord terratory, but who cares. What's more frightening, a red tide of angry marines comming at you when you expect it, or a silent force coming at you when you least expect it.

I wouldn't call it a bad thing that they seem a bit like night lords.  I am interested in how you flesh this chapter out.  I do like how you are trying to leave a little to mystery though.

Sorry about the tone in my last reply. I was a bit irritated, and it came out wrong. What I ment to say is that I actually like that approach, even if it isn't all BA modus operandi. It was indeed intended, although I was looking at the raven guard or alpha legion more then the night lords.
