2k Tourney CSM vs SW x2

Played in a 2k tourney this weekend. I went with a fluffy list for the most part as I can't stand playing a super competitive cheese list and I will only play with stuff I have painted. This is what I took:

First list was foot wolves, something like this:

Canis wolfborn

Rune Priest with sternguard

Wolf Priest with the GH

Wolf Priest with jumppack, reserved with the WG

WG with jumppacks and all sorts of CC weapons

Grey hunter squad in drop pod

Sniper scout squad

Fenrisian wolves

Longfangs with MLs and heavy bolters

Pedro Cantor with sternguard

Sternguard with PC (combat squaded)

Sniper scout squad with camo cloaks

Game 1

Deployment: Dawn of War

Game type: Something like Purge the Alien (no objectives, basically just KPs)

My WL trait for my DP was the fear one (useless)

His was something equally useless

My pregame GoM rolls were equally useless

Pyschic powers: Boon of mutation (DP), Life Leech (Primaris)

Terrain was one large hill in the middle and one forrest type in each board corner. We had special rules where if you entered terrain special stuff tried to kill you and it was counted as dangerous terrin that was failed on a 1 or 2. So we stayed clear of the terrain pretty well the whole time.

He won the roll for initiative so he setup first. He deployed half his sternguard with pedro in the left corner behind the woods. Other half of the sternguard setup on his right side behind the woods. Longfangs behind the woods and hill on the far right side. I think he was afraid of my oblits because he kept spacing them out and commenting on their PCs. Everything else was reserved or infiltrating.

I setup in my left corner altogether. My khornate rhino was right beside the woods getting ready to gun it forward toward cantor and his sternguard. My slanneshi rhino on my rightside and chimera in the middle. Oblits and havocs were dispersed in between with a good fire arc toward his forces.

He infiltrates his scouts, camo cloak ones going on my right side behind the woods and the others behind the hill in the center.

I fail to seize and he goes first. He drop pods his GH with the priest pretty conservatively as I think he was worried about going off the board. He shuffles his sternguard forward and moves his snipers to get a few targets. Shooting sees him fire meltas at my slanneshi rhino but fail to do anything. His snipers fire inneffectively against my oblits.

My turn I deploy my slanneshi marines out of their rhino, shuffle oblits forward, khornate rhino forward, and move the chimera to the right (trying to get a few shots off at the GHs). My shooting sees 4-5 GH dead from my slanneshi guys. One oblit squad tries to MM the drop pod but fail as they're 18 inches out and don't get the extra D6. The second squad fires a PC at cantor's sternguard and kills one. Havocs plink off a marine from the rune priests sternguard unit.

His second turn he moves his GH forward toward my slanneshi squad. Pedro stays put to use his orbital bombardment. His PC sternguard move up to get into range. Canis and wolves stay in reserves. WG arrive on the right side and jump 12". His runepriest fires living lightning at the oblits but I pass my saves. He fires his orbital bombardment and kills an oblit from each squad. Snipers behind the hill plink a wound off the leftmost oblit squad. GH and sniper fire kills a total of one or two slanneshi marines. He charges and loses another to overwatch. My champion challenges his wolf priest and kills him, gaining a 2+ armor save. My slanneshi marines butcher his GH before they can attack. I consolidate toward his drop pod.

My turn, DP decides to hangout in reserves but the termies arrive and DS on my right side right next to the camo cloak scouts. Khorne CSM move in their rhino sideways and deploy on the far side from the sternguard. Chimera vet squad moves further right. Slanneshi marine rhino hides behind the hill. Oblits move forward again. My shooting, oblits PC the sternguard killing 2-3. Havocs kill a few more from the runepriests squad. Termies light up the scouts on the right with bolter fire, only 2-3 left at this point. Slanneshi CSM  kill the rest. Vet squad kills the drop pod.

Turn three for him is the turning point. He still hasn't killed anything of mine and he needs to start finishing off some of my wounded squads. He moves his WG into charge range of the terminators and he runs cantor and his sterngaurd (total of three of them left) away from the khorne marines. His rune priest splits off from the sternguard and moves toward my terminators. Shooting sees him plink off another marine with his heavy bolters, ML miss. His PC targets my termies and hits but I save both. He charges with his WG, I kill one with overwatch. My champ challenges his wolf priest and kills the priest, gaining nothing useful. My termies with mauls kill a few more but are killed in return. I win combat and he falls back. This was the real turning point as he spent alot on this unit and it didn't do much of anything only killing about 60 points worth of termies.

My turn, my prince comes in on the right and vector strikes the last scout to death. Khorne CSM get back in their ride and give chase. Oblits keep moving up. Slanneshi and the chimera move forward. Lone termi champ moves forward. Shooting, my khornate squad fires two plasma shots at the retreating sternguard, killing one. Oblits kill a few more of the PC sternguard (4 left) with PC fire. Oblits kill the remaining cantor sternguard with lascannons and cantor passes a 4++. Termi champ attempts a potshot at the runepriest with his combi-melta but it fails.

His turn canis comes in on the right side, wolves on the left. Cantor runs and joins the remaining sternguard on the right. He fires his PC at the terminator, missing. Leftover sternguard fire at the termi but I pass saves. Remaining sniper behind the hill hits and I pass save with my termi. He fires heavy bolters and ML at the prince, gets a hit with the heavy bolter but I pass my save and grounding test. Living lightning misses my DP. His WG regroups and charges the termi again but gets put down for good. Not looking good for him.

My turn, my khornate rhino turns around and deploys the khorne CSM facing the wolves. Oblits keep moving forward and the DP glides down toward the longfang squad. My khornate squad guns down the wolves with bolt pistols and four plasma gun shots. Havocs plink off all but one sternguard and cantor. Oblits each fire las and PC respectively at the sternguard and cantor killing both. Termi guns down the last sniper. I charge the rune priest with my DP and kill him.

His turn he has almost nothing left so he's just doing things for fun. He charges Canis at my DP and I roll a 5 for attacks. Canis dies. He concedes. Overall this game started out pretty even but with a combination of bad rolling and tactics on his part combined with decent rolling on my part made for a pretty easy win. His list wasn't the greatest either, but neither was mine. I'll post the other game later.

Thanks guys and Poly, there actually was one super cheesy Cron list there. It had 5 flyers and tau allies with a riptide. It actually got beat pretty badly though by the Nid player we had who in turn got beaten by the draigowing.

Second game was against a much tougher SW list. Same sort of board setup. Special rule for this was 3++ cover save but if you took a strength 6 hit or higher you took a str 4 hit. Also no Gets Hot rule for this game (good for me) and test 5+ for Night fight each turn. Was supposed to be an Iceworld game. We setup two objectives each in each piece of terrian in the NW, NE, SW and SE corners respectively.

His list was something like this:

Wolf lord with thunderwolf, runic armor and TH/SS (all had sagas but don't know what they were)

Wolf lord with thunderwolf, runic armor and PF/SS

Wolf lord with thunderwolf, runic armor and Runesword/SS

Wolf lord with thunderwolf, runic armor and Runesword/SS

GH squad with one melta

GH squad with one melta

GH squad with one melta and drop pod

Lone wolf with TDA, TH/SS

Lone wolf with TDA, TH/SS

LF with 4 ML

LF with 2 ML and 2 LC

Game 2

Mission - Big Guns Never Tire

Deployment - Hammer and Anvil ? (table halves?)

My WL trait - Reroll boons

His WL trait - Scoring WL or something like that

DP power - Boon (again)

Primaris power - Psychic Scream

Only pregame boon worth mentioning was shrouded on my DP.

I won initiative roll so I elected to deploy first because of his rapid moving HQs I wanted to be as far away as possible. So I deploy in my SE corner once again with a rhino blocking each corner, chimera in the middle and oblits/havocs dispersed inbetween.

His deployment was to setup his ML/LC longfangs in the NW piece of terrain (ontop the objective) with two TDA lonewolves on either side. His TW lords all went behind the hill terrain in the middle, one GH squad on the NE objective, another in front of the NE objective getting ready to book it to the SE objective and the 4 ML LFs in cover in a terrain piece to the north.

So this game I was very worried about the TW lords so I was pretty timid. I move everyone forward a bit but not alot as I know he's coming to me. I attempted to take out the longfangs in the NW objective with oblits/havocs but I fluff my rolls and only kill a few leaving 2 lascannons, a ML and an extra body.

His turn was pretty brutal. He DS his pod GH pretty much ontop the objective in my SW corner while his TW lords book it toward me. His second GH squad moves toward the SE objective and a single lone wolf runs toward me alongside his TW lords. Shooting sees him roll up a storm and kill all my havocs with combined shooting from LFs and the pod squad.

My turn turn I make my first huge mistake and forget to roll for reserves. I deploy my CSM squads out of their rhinos and vet squad out of their chimera. I then unload heavy flamers from all my oblits, shots from vet squad and from both CSM squads for a grand total of like 4-5 dead, leaving two left. He then passes his morale. This guy I swear only messed up his rolls like once.

His turn he runs everything up with the GH making it to the SE objective. He tries to shoot some oblits with his lascannons but I make my saves while his back ML squad is out of range. He is by now in charge range with his wolf lords and charges my CSM squads and an oblit squad. As usual, champions have to challenge. Both are slain, slannesh forcing him to make a 2+ save before going down and khorne dying before getting to strike. Ld test and of course I fail both, even with Votlw. At that point I was a little pissed and it really did highlight, bold and italicize the glaring weakness of C:CSM that the actual CSM are pretty horrible in certain situations. Obliterator vs TH lord combats result in an obliterator dying in one squad, the other squad getting wiped and one lord with two wounds left and one lord with one wound left.

My turn, my reserves both come in with the prince flying in. Termies DS behind the longfang squad on NW objective. My rhino and chimera move to block the way around the terrain and so the chimera can get a line on the GH left in my area. Shooting results in one TW lord dying to mass plasma and another getting a wound taken off. Termies fire their combi-meltas at the LFs on the NW objective, taking out two (one lascannon left). Prince assaults one of the newer TW lords and kills him with a failed toughness test. The oblits actually kill their lord, losing one wound.

His turn he runs his last TW lord (the WL) in through the terrain. His TDA lone wolf in the NW corner moves toward my termies. His other TDA lone wolf moves toward my prince. Shooting sees him kill the chainfist termie with the lascannon while I pass saves from the MLs. He charges the DP with his lone wolf, charges the termies with his other lone wolf and fails the charge against my vet squad with his last TW lord. Combat results in the termies getting stomped (he passed a few saves as per usual) and the DP smashing the other lone wolf.

My turn DP moves toward the TW lord. Oblits and vet squad rain 13 plasma shots on the lord, resulting in a massive two wounds dry.png. Chimera fires all three weapons at the GH left for.....no damage (all saves passed). DP charges and kills the last TW lord (finally).

His turn. We're both hurting but he's got alot more going for him now. He kept me busy while everything else can score. He moves his lone wolf up and runs him toward my objective. He fires his LC at my DP for one wound. I kept trying to argue I should get a higher cover save thanks to the fact that he was firing through terrain and I had shrouded but I only got the 4++.

My turn I vector strike the last two GH and they finally die, moving toward the middle hill. Oblits and Vet squad move toward my objective and rhino/chimera move into the middle.

His turn he moves his lone wolf toward the objective again. He fires all his bolter shots from the SE objective and gets a few lucky 6s (as usual with this guy) and I promptly fail my grounding test. He then lights me up with 4 MLs and once again only get a 4++ (even with this turn being nightfight) and the DP dies. He turns his lascannon on the chimera and wrecks it.

My turn. Well game over pretty much. I move my vets toward the objective so they're atop it. I fire lascannons at the single LF left over in the NW corner and he saves. Vet squad fires everything at the lone wolf and he saves everything.

His turn he charges the lone wolf into the vet squad and challenges the primaris. They go simul, primaris fluffs his rolls and dies.

Roll to continue and game ends. Well that wasn't quite as bad as I was expecting looking at his list but it didn't go too well either. If I hadn't lost the grounding test though, I think I may have been able to tie it by charging the SE GH squad and if he hadn't been so lucky at the end with saves (on the last LF and the lone wolf) then things would've been a bit different. One thing I learned from this game though was the vet squad was invaluable taking down 2+/3++ units. Second was that I need a heldrake. If I'd had one this game it would've been over far more quickly. Think I'm going to switch it out for the havoc squad next game I play.

Thanks for the reports, it was interesting to read them and neat to see that you make conclusion in the end. It's embarrassing though that your opponent in the last game did roll his saves always positive. And as I've said earlier, I agree with you on plasma-vets and heldrake.
