The Shields of Myrmidon - "Tuti est Totalum". EtL2 vow.

Recommended Posts

Im taking part in Lamentermarines excellant community thread set in the future 27th founding, its a fresh look and full of amazing talent so take a look. smile.png

Here is my basic background, colour scheme and short introductory story.

Ive attempted and failed a few other community projects, all of which ive had to pull out of due to children, so this will be my first chance to complete a project.

Shields of Myrmidon.

The Shields of Myrmidon were created under the 27th founding in response to an Imperial Tarot reading proclaiming a "great and ancient danger unknown; it returns from beyond the Western Veil as it did before Man first divined the stars". Reports of horrifying encounters with previously unrecorded space hulks (such as the massive "Donum Mortibus") and the discovery of chaos-worshipping human and Xeno populations soon reached the High Lords of Terra.

Veteran Sergeant of the second company.

It was called "Lan'raydah", and it was a thing not seen in his lifetime. It was the burden-beast of the Daemons, and he was standing inside its mouth.

He looked at the Daemons again. The black one had a skull for a head, and wore a chain decorated with human skulls looped around his waist. The chain was as long as a warrior was tall, and would be immensely valuable during trading season - the Daemon could buy 3 hunting ships, the warriors to work them and the next four seasons hunting rights for his tribe.

In awe, R'aktos and the Daemons travelled impossibly far under the very waves his tribe braved on there hunting rafts, but most baffingly of all; they dived down amongst the monsters instead of avoiding them.

Soon he saw them on what the black daemon had named a S'kreen. Ten legged monsters that broke the suface to attack fishing boats and take warriors to the deepest reaches with them. Only down here they displayed a gentleness, a gracefullness. There murderous aggression was gone, and they moved slowly in what could only be called "play".

Children. The thought hit him hard. The monstrous things were as alive as he was, concerned only with breeding rights and access to there childrens feeding and spawning grounds. He knew then, in that instant; the tribes best sons would be gifted to the Daemons to protect the Deeps of the Stars in His name, just as Marianos Goddess of the Deeps would continue to provide food and material to the tribes through the monsters seasonal spawning and death.

To hold a secret like this; one that showed the balance of nature and its forces so completely - that was the mark and special wisdom of Marianos herself.

R'aktos hoped his son would be taken by the daemons.

Only through death would the Father beyond the Stars provide life, and only Marianos' Sons could be trusted to met out a fair share to her people.

The trade would be completed, as was his sacred duty as hetman just like his grandfather and his grandfather before him. His first son would be taken by the Daemons in exchange for protection from beyond the stars.

A very good deal indeed, R'aktos thought.

So theres the start - Novamarines successors, paladins using swords and spears with honour shields, Oceanic world populated with neolithic tribes and giant killer squid that they hunt like the Inuit hunt whale.

Heres an idea of the chapter badge;

http://i41.tinypic.com/hvct3n.jpg

Left shoulder is cream with badge, right shoulder is cream with green trim reversed on terminators, veterans hace cream stripe 1st co. cream helmet, laurels indicate further rank. Power fist has a green stripe or check pattern down the centre.

Look all right so far?, because ive got some work to do judging by the posts so far smile.png:)

Good people of the BnC, I need your opinions!

Would my Shields look better in the solid green scheme with cream highlights OR a quartered scheme like there forebears the Novamarines?. Even though Ive always done solid schemes, im leaning towards quartered.

http://i42.tinypic.com/ac4pyx.jpg

Helmet cream for vets, green for grunts.

Also, only. one badge on minis.

All light sources (lenses, glow effects, etc) will be purple and white, also i dislike halved helmets so they would be green with cream stripes for sergeant, cream helm for veterans and added green laurels for 1st co./ termie honours (as termie honours necessitate a tríp to the court of Ultramar, veterancy a trip to Honorium.)

Ill do up a couple of test marines tonight, but im keen to hear from you all before hand.

May the Emperor speed your answers through the warp!!

I'm with Grotsmasha here, the quartered scheme, whilst difficult to pull off, has the potential to look fantastic. We see green marines all the time, especially in the original colour scheme you've done, but green/cream quartered is a little more unusual; one thing though - how are companies shown on the marines? It's obvious that they don't exactly follow the Codex for that kind of thing, so will you be following a line similar to the Dark Angels, with a kneepad system?

Great work so far, Brother, keep it up!

Its unanimous, and the Sheilds shall be....quarteted! For company/squad markings, im thinking a gothic number of the companies colour in the FoC markings of the right shoulder (a red 2 in a tacticals arrow means 3rd co. 2nd squad, tactical.) Back banners for sarge and squad leader are in order too i think.

Some basic testers;

Seargants will wear red helmets, with cream laurels for vets, as there in line to join 1st co. Weapon casings will be red.

How does this sound? Im pretty excited to get more done, and think vehicles will look especially good!!

Thanks furioso-prime, took me a while to get it sounding right at the expense of strictly correct Latin. So I used middle Italian lol.

So here is a quick update,

2 tactical vet sarges and one of 2 combat squad leaders, all will have back banners;

Started my first Rhino, but stuck on a theme.

http://i44.tinypic.com/2rq2g04.jpg

Im thinking of painting the exhaust covers cream as well, as well as the cupollas and repainting the panle with theports green.

Or should I carry the quartered them over to the rhinos and use this as my command squads ride? (which it will be).

There will be special sternguard after that if I somehow have that much time.

That's it for now folks, I just want to say again how refreshing it is to finally be able to paint again - 4 years is a long time, and I can see im a little rusty but im sure ill be doing much better very soon ;)

Another Brother who likes LS:Typhoo(oooooo)ns! happy.png

You're quite brave doing a quartered scheme, but having said that, I do love seeing them done happy.png

Quite liked the fluff piece too happy.png

@deathspectersgt07 thanks, theres plenty more to come, honest. Loved Lyandro Karras, is the sword from the GK r the Dreadknights? I want to use it for my Khorne pirates :)

@Aquilanus, I would sleep with a Typhoon under my pillow if my wife would let me, just wish BA had access to them; Typhoon's and fast Rhino chassis?  I could die a shiny death :). My good friend does commission work and said I was mad after learning I'm attempting a quartered scheme using bone over a black undercoat - but ive figured an easy way to get what I think is a very good table top standard :)

And thanks about the fluff piece, its one of my favourite ones. Youre work on the Rainbows inspired me to drag out my old minis, they are unfortunatly horribly dated. Funny the RT era ones hold up better then the 2nd ed. ones. Anyway I run a Rainbow Warriors sternguard sergeant in a local DeathWatch game. Im the inspiring one ;)

It would seem there are far more Rainbow Warriors fans than I thought! laugh.png I must admit I'm intrigued by the method of getting a decent bone colour over a dark undercoat, as I've only managed a reasonable one on white laugh.png

Very cool, deathspectorsgt - ive been fond of the ghoul stars idea for many years, but couldnt write a decent enough story that kept the mystery. Your scheme is right on.

Aquilanus, ive been very pleased to see it too - I thought you were the only person to collect them till recently.

For the painting, its mostly black undercoat with about 4 layers of thinned Bleached Bone. My secret is a wet pallette and not worrying about how crap the first 2 coats look, a decent effect is achieved after 3. My biggest secret though is not much paint on the brush, i used to overload my brush with paint straight from the pot, but using the method above my technique improved about 300% straight away.

(Big thankyou to my mate FatMat, he broke me of bad habits and gave me the gift of wet pallettes and patience, the secrets of immortality.)

Im also a big fan of the new paint range, very easy to work with, but ive heard good things about Vallejo.....

Dude your ancient predator where did you get it?

Games Workshop Newcastle, around 1996 if memory serves me well...

This is mostly the rebirth of  an old UM and BA army I had back then, with an old SW rhino chassis thrown in.

Speaking of which, wait till you see the old rhino's....

Update;

So here is last nights work alongside the force so far, im posting this to illustrate the small tips I gave for painting cream over black undercoats;
 -
http://i1366.photobucket.com/albums/r769/doraexporter/IMAG0120_zps2a2949eb.jpg

Ive now got most of the basic colours done for these tacs. Once I get black paint I can finish the scheme, then I need red for details and grey for aquilas.

Here is a mock up of my Vanguard Vet sarge -

http://i1366.photobucket.com/albums/r769/doraexporter/IMAG0121_zps2bb1bcd9.jpg

There will be more proper updates soon, along with an expansion in background material revealing the Shields origin and how they intertwine with the Blood Hawks and the doomed Perseus sub-sector.....dun-dun-DUUUUNNN!!!

Looks like a dred is missing somethingwhistlingW.gif

hehe, heres an explanation.....

"Krava's Sins"

"Imperator Totalum" screamed the madman, using a piece of the walking machine that had been destroyed with melta fire only moments ago as a shield.He had landed amidst the flames, gilded armour and the icons of previous slaughter making a terrifying image to match the ferocity of the battle, and he had reaped a terrible toll on the renegades already. Five of the Astartes had slaughtered more then 40 guardsmen and destroyed the Leman Russ squadrons they were attached to in a horrific few minutes. The assault was a surprise, back here near the command bunker so far removed from the frontlines. Frenzied steps brought the Emperors angel ever closer to the bunker.

Krava's brothers were here as well, secessionists of the Free Zone political alignment, they had renounced there oaths to the Emperor and picked up arms against there former governor. They were not alone either, fully 20 planetary systems had also joined over the course of the last 4 years. In the current situation though it seemed less like treason and more like the pragmatism necessary for survival - risk being overrun by the horrors of a Slaaneshi slave-cult or act now and do what is necessary to protect your own.

None of that mattered now though, in an instant Krava understood the folly of standing against the God - Emperor, throwing aside his lasrifle he sunk to his knees and chanted the hymn of the Everliving Righteous God. Hoping for absolution for his sins he used his last seconds of life understanding he would die a death that he deserved.

"In salvi regnum tuum super nomen tuum, stabimus alia exempla. Sis salus nostra ...."*

Krava's solemn hymnal was drowned out, as the Emperors angel was outside, beating through the bunker walls with his fists - all the while screaming of the Emperors glory and the eternal damnation afforded to the traitors of humanity.....

"Tutti est Totalum!!!

*Under your reign we are safe, against the horrors of the other we will stand in your name. You are our salvation....
