Robert2004
Hey guys, As the title suggests can I get some advice on how to add battle damage to a stormraven in the Ultramarine colors? I've seen how to do it with a blood angels one but not an ultramarines one. Any advice would be grateful, thanks! kdruthless
You could simulate bolter fire hitting the armour by drilling holes with a pin vice and widening it with a square or triangle file. As for weathering, id go for weathering powders (GW don't do them, but any model shop worth its salt should have them somewhere, modelzone is good) and bear in mind what will actually happen to the ship as it goes about its business. Will the paint burn as it enters the atmosphere, will flying through cloud clean it off a bit? is it cleaned when not in use? An extremely light drybrush of a silver metallic paint on highlighted details should also help produce a nice effect. Hope this helps Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/276782-battle-damage-on-a-stormraven/#findComment-3392672 Share on other sites
Robert2004
Yes given me some ideas, think a model knife and some marks could well appear to be bolter damage!! Was thinking more the lines of a paint list of what paints to use when weathering, like start with brown, silver and a highlight all within each other to create the effect the paint has worn off? I like the idea of black streaks behind the thrusters to stimulate smoke dirt or burn marks or something similar! =] Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/276782-battle-damage-on-a-stormraven/#findComment-3392681 Share on other sites
kdruthless
Its best to follow natural processes. look around and see what happens. Steam Trains for instance (not entirely irrelevant here: soot, mud, dust, smoke but careful maintenance) get a lightest layer of dirt all over them first, which is then covered by soot and black grease. Then, certain areas are cleaned (logos, names, etc) but others left to accumulate dirt. If we transfer that to the raven, it would probably get scorch marks from re-entry, general dirt and filth from its operations, if its a manufactorum world it could well get soot and black all over it too. Then it comes back into the armoury for a quick turn-around. The techmarines perform maintenance and clean off the chapter and company emblem and vehicle name before launching it back into the fray. At least, that's one way of doing it :) by the way, don't affix any weathering poders right away. As the model is handled, the powder accumulates in the cracks and is removed from the raised or flat areas where dirt doesn't stick. wait a month or two and then stick it down with ASDA hairspray (cover the glazing tho, unless your pilots can fly while looking through a Kaleidoscope :) ) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/276782-battle-damage-on-a-stormraven/#findComment-3392689 Share on other sites
Robert2004
Not the first time I've heard hair spray mentioned, what does it do exactly to the model? Building here atm, bloody pilot is a friggen night mare to glue down!! kdruthless
Hair spray or mists up clear plastic. At the best, it'll make the window look cracked and at worst it will look frosted. It's main purpose on the model is to hold the weathering powder in place without the colour altering properties of varnish Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/276782-battle-damage-on-a-stormraven/#findComment-3392851 Share on other sites
Montuhotep
Sponge-weathering could also look good, but only on what I would term the 'leading edges' of the Raven, things like the wings, front hull around the assault ramp etc - got to figure that those would take the most punishment as they're the first things that would hit the atmosphere during a combat insertion from orbit.
