Jimbos finished Space Marines - one unit from each Chapter

Hi guys,

Thought I would share these chappies, some of which I may have posted here before, but they are all in one thread together this way. I'm preparing an army for a tournament with the theme being one unit representing each first founding chapter. I've tried to make the unit as fluffy as possible for that particular chapter. I've still to do their commander (Lysander) and half the BA assault squad but other than that they're done. Lot's more pics on my blog linked at the bottom. Cheers.

Cheers. I painted the head a while back. If memory serves I started with a mid flesh tone then worked it up by mixing white in. A purple wash for the bags round the eyes and thinned grey for the stubble. Hope this helps.

Excellent stuff! Iron hand bikers are not something you see every day for some reason. They have a nice mix of bionics there msn-wink.gif

Thanks. Yeah, I 've not seen many on the internet and certainly none other than mine in person. If Iron hands are your thing check out my finished army here, led by this chap:

Wow!! I just checked out your IH army, and it is now amongst my favorites! You did an excellent job in portraying them, just as you did with these small squads of guys here. I really dig that Iron father you have, and your commander's "halo knuckles" are pretty interesting as well. Excellent stuff all around :D

Only one imperial fist??? Dude... Where's the love?

Can't say I like the fish tank decor on the storm talon, but ok.

The army originally had an IF vindicator and an UM command squad with sicarius but on the tabletop I couldn't get it to work right so made the switch. IF and RG are the least represented chappies sadly but I'm hoping to compensate somewhat with a NMM paintjob on Lysander. (first time I've tried it so might be a disaster) The exotic alien jungle canopy (ahem, aquarium plants) are very much a love or hate thing it seems. It saved me a hell of lot of time in terms of modelling scenery though.

Cheers pal. They were a real pleasure to create even if the painting side of things was a bit dull. Just the venerable dreadnought needing some attention to have them 100% done. Sadly poor old Calgar counts as has rarely achieved anything on the tabletop. He looks the part though!

Yes, as they were already finished it made sense to allocate the extra points to them. I could have maybe added more scouts in place of the bikes or predator, but the army works better this way. Plus the smurfs have 2 units also due to their ride.

I'll speak up for the fish plants, I think they look really cool, its just the actual base itself needs a bit more texture to it than just the plain brown, maybe some sand or grass or such.

Keep a few of the fish tank plants, but bring down the density of them. Real jungles have that kind of density but when creating a visual art piece, you don't want the eye to get drawn to so many things. As a wise man once told me: the base compliments the miniature, but should never distract from it. To that end, I would also recommend unifying the bases of your army. They all look like they are fighting on seperate worlds rather than as one force.

Another idea that might help unify the army would be putting some sort of campaign badge on them. A kind of small marking that every squad has and can tie them all together.

I do love the paint jobs on the miniatures thought and I particularly commend you on your Ultramarine Veterans. Though the boys in blue get a lot of guff (some from me, full disclosure), I think Tyrannic War veterans exude character and yours are no exception!

  • 1 month later...

Awesome idea and great execution! (Minus the underwater talon haha)

I have been thinking about painting some marines of different chapters, to give me something different to paint. I could make a counts as Deathwatch squad.

Hi folks,

Been a while and I just realised there'd been a lot of replies since I last graced this thread. I also realised I didn't put a decent picture of the big man himself (Lysander) on with the other pictures - he was the last one I finished so that's probably why. He came joint first in the painting competition at the tournament and I love how he turned out.

More pics on my blog (link at bottom if anyone wants a peek)

Very cool stuff! Where did you get those heads for the Ravenguard scouts?

They're pig-iron productions helmets - they have lots to choose from and suit scouts perfectly.

Thanks for the replies. Alas the aqua-base will have to stay as is for the moment as It'd be tricky to remove the plants without damaging the base. I will be trying to add a decent amount of intervening base terrain (sand etc) to make it more interesting though. The density was more to hide the flying stem than anything but it does overpower the white talon a bit.

As to unifying the army, these guys were pulled together from different SM collections I have just for this one tournament hence the distinction in bases. I lost out to a pro commission painted army in the end but I think the lack of unification was the major achilles heel for the army. A shame, but loads of people liked it so made it worth all the effort that went into them.

That brings this particular project to a close but with the SM codex right around the corner there'll be more on the horizon shortly. Cheers.
