cadian 812th

it's been a while since i've painted infantry, but a lack of series to watch (damn you end of year breaks) has forced my hand. So after a couple of hours of painting, here's another infantry squad and some command squad models:

FOR CADIA!

i tried to do some kasrkin markings on them, but could not really remember how that scheme went. I do know some red was involved so i settled for thistongue.png

lots of flash, but you can see the camo patterns easely:

update on the armour pool! i've now added squadron markings to my russes! each of them is an individual squadron, except for paskuisher. he got a vanquisher buddy. I know a lot of people tend to stick an executioner with him but in my last couple of games i sometimes found it really hard to position these two tanks in coherence, while still getting some nice lines of fire towards juicy targets. not to mention my orders failed half the time so no split fire. with two dedicated tankhunters this no longer poses trouble since now both of them will actively be hunting the same target!

in addition, the loss of prefered enemy can be solved by fielding the steel host formation. something i'm looking forward to!

update!

after reading, more reading, and some foolign around i've decided to start another small army, based upon the D-99 elysian troopers. why?

-I have plenty of cadian models and rarely field a complete foot company. offering up a few models for another type of army is no problem at all.

-BS4 imperial guardsmen, including their vehicles?! Yes please!

also BS5 vultures? what's not to love!?

-another way of playing, it will also allow me to change up my lists more and more (I now field an armoured company, a mechanised company and occasionally footsloggers. Deepstrikers only make this mix more interesting.

Modelwise i've represented their deepstrike by giving them all backpacks, which count as parachutes. making them more of an old fashioned airborn company.I would most likely field them with prefered enemy (necrons), with the anomalous dermal calcification drawback (I say all their chutes make it harder for them to sprint and charge easely).

Now here's the problem, fluffwise. given how the imperial guard are organised. Do i make them a different draft from the cadian 812th regiment, or just a small airborn company inside the cadian 812th armoured regiment? Given how an armoured regiment is organised i've not had any problems fielding mechanised infantry, tanks and artillery, or a mix of them. even footsloggers could be represented by armoured crew fighting in situations unfit for their vehicles. however the D99 regiment plays the game on a whole different level, with completely different stats too.

So what do i do, make them a different regiment? and if so, do i go for a similar paintsheme or not? My imperial navy assets are painted in colours similar to the cadian 812th, and german luftwaffe camouflage (green and brown, with yellow noses etc) during WWII.  any suggestions are welcome.

here's a group picture, featured are 8 minimum sized squads, including the company command sqd, 2 plasma executioner sqds and 1 flamer exterminator squad.

and the navy sheme:

http://i210.photobucket.com/albums/bb281/amorfatipictures/IMG_20140626_152305_zpsmf6z7980.jpg.

these badboys will be supported by 2 imperial navy vultures most of the time, so a link to that sheme might be plausible, or not. what does the B&C think? ;)

I say make a new regiment for them but second them to the 812th.

Or another option is to have a specialist section of the 812th being specially trained to fight a new style of warfare. would fit the easiest without needing much changing.

As for colours, what you have works though maybe the vultures could be more navalised with less camo pattern?

I don't think the camo of my vultures is a problem really, and repainting them will be a mess given how i don't seal up my weathering powders with a varnish spray (i'm afraid it'ss spray on too thick, or give the models a glossy look, even when using matt varnish). during WWII many nations used camouflaged fighters so i think it's only logical for the navy to do the same. Sure, they might all deploy from space but i think in most occasions the imperial navy fighter assets (bombers, vultures, thunderbolts,...) will deploy from on-planet airbases, no? (if anyone has fluff sources, please share!)

I quite like the idea of the red devils, even though the models lack barets. maybe paint their helmets mechrite red?

I found this picture of some replicating the red devils and quite like the design. however, how would i incorporate it on an imperial guard model? I'm thinking doing their jacket in tallarn sand and their flak armour in death world forset, with mournfang brown camo stripes? what do i do with their trousers?

http://albums.modelbrouwers.nl/coppermine/albums/userpics/10049/para2.jpg

I also quite like the idea of fallschirmjagers, as the historical context fits them very well. In 'that case i'm thinking vallejo german ext.dark green flak armour, german field grey trousers and russian green jacket (early war pre camo, since their pattern will be hard to replicate)

Quick test shemes. I'm not really satisfied with either.http://i210.photobucket.com/albums/bb281/amorfatipictures/20150121_110427_zpsfjp1d9sd.jpg

the left one os a bit too dark in my opinion as from a distance it hardly looks as if the model is painted. The one on the right. I just don't seem to get a nice redish helmet, neither am i sure what to do with it. You sort of want the red to pop without being too bright

As for Imperial Navy assets, I only go on what fluff adjoins the Elysians in IA8. They were seconded to use by the regiment so didn't have much camo and more the traditional greys etc.

As for the test schemes, the one on the left is very urban/night world camo and I like it. Simple to do in droves too.

The right is nice, have you tried a dark wash over the helmet? Also if the Aquila wasn't white I don't think it would stand out as much. The contrast with White is whats makes it stand out imo.

I think we have a winner! different camouflage sheme than my navy assets and my cadian 812th, inspired by a mishmash of german and british WWII colours. gave the cloth a wash of reiksland flesh as well, although i'm not sure if i should keep doing it. it makes them look totally different in finish from my 812th.

so today i had my first game of 2015, and boy did it go wrong!

I faced off with a combined force, consisting of a steel host formation and a D99 army. here's a quick overview of both armies:

Cadian 812th/D99:

-pask vanquisher+vanquisher buddy

-executioner(hb sponsons)

-executioner (PC sponsons)

-demolisher

-hydra

D99:

-Company command sqd: long range scanner (did squad!), HB

-veteran sqd(5): HB

-veteran sqd(5): HB

-veteran sqd(5): MG, HF vox

-extermination sqd(5): 4x flamer

-executioner sqd(5): 4x PG

-executioner sqd(5): 4x PG

-vulture: punisher gatling cannons

-vulture: punisher gatling cannons

I faced of against 2000 pts of black legion consisting of:

-typhus+CC obliterators in landraider

-20 zombies

-3x plague marines (5) in rhino: 2x MG

-2 x chaos spawns (3)

-belakor

-16 pink horrors

We ended up playing along the long table edge, with him going first and deploying as close as possible. fortunatly for him the terrain was placed before determining deploymentzones and it turned out to offer almost no firing lanes for my tank force. We played big guns never tire so I knew i would be at a disadvantage. (on that note, do the leman russes bought in a steel host formation cound as heavy support choices?we agreed they did however i'm not sure they actually do)

Turn 1 chaos:

He advanced with all his forces, hugging cover where he went. In his magic phase he managed to summon bloodcrushers that tagged along his main force, and casted shrouded on most of his vehicles. Since most of these were hidden behind some cover they all had a 2+ cover save. his zombies and pink horrors stay to camp on an objective

Turn 1 imperial:

My D99 regiment arrives and i drop 1 plasma unit right behind his summoned bloodcrushers, deeming them the most mobile threat. My flamer squad and another squad drop right next to the zombies, setting them ablaze in doing so. I'm feeling confident since none of my deep striking units scatter! however, my shooting is horrible. especially pask and his buddy. they don't even manage to put a single dent on his landraider.I allready feel in my bones that this won't end well. The only thing i manage to do is to take out his bloodcrushers. first blood goes to me!

Turn 2 went on with his force hitting my lines and them starting to kill off my tanks with meltaguns.his surviving zombies charge my vetern squd deployed in his rearlines My turn two sees my force retreat as much as possible, and doing some dammage, but nearly not enough. None of my shooting does much and my main annoyance is pask and his buddy, who once again seem unable to harm the landraider. none of my reserves arrived as well so i was cearly losing the field steadily.

Turn 3: close combat ensues and my tanks start blowing up one by one. he also summons more bloodcrushers, and some plaguabearers. I end up losing my hydra, the demolisher, pask and his buddy and all but 1 hulllpoint on one of the executioners. my vultures and last executioner squad arrive, but they do relatively little dammage aside from wiping out 5 plague marines and bringing belakor down to one last wound. in the meantime it is clear he dominates all objectives, each worth 3 VP, and has slay the warlord, linebreaker and 2 VP for my destroyed tanks. We continue the game a bit more but it is clear the imperials have lost the day. after turn 4 we call it quits and i end up converting an aspiring bloodletter champion for him.

analysis:

-I used to swear by pask and his vanquisher buddy, but in the last couple of games they have dissapointed me gravely. still, i love their models so perhaps i should switch them for 2 battle tanks (using battlecannon rounds, and using a normal tank commander instead of pask)

-D99, a glass cannon. A lack of 4+ save really hurts these guys and i'm wondering if standard elysians or stormtroopers might be better. Either wya i do need to get a lot more experience with these guys. I must say i was quite pleased with the dammage they did upon arriving, although not all of them made their points back.

-chaos is a whole change from facing necrons and tau! also not playing the psychic game has it's drawbacks, although most of his psychic phase consisted of buffing himself and summoning more deamons. In the end me calculated he had summoned nearly 500 pts of deamons. perhaps i should start including my inquitorial psychers again

-belakor is da bomb, and will buff nearly units so hard it ain't fun anymore. his constant 2+ cover save due to shrouded+jink also sucks!

the cadian 812th recieved regimental support by house Von Anthalt. Supported in their wareffort by Heinrich I Von Anthalt they push ever onwards to glory!

note that this is based on a real existing historical knight, from the codex manesse

In addition, i also converted up the good old warriorfish basilisk, since i've never bothered to field him...EVER. simple earthshaker platforms outperform the basilisk so hard that it was a no brainer to go for it and here's what i got:

Ps; any tips on how to paint the recessed (and small!) lanesen of the knight are much appreciated, as for the moment i find them rather dull
