Hi chaps. I am a long time space wolves lover but never had a scheme or the skills to build an army to my satisfaction. Recently however I got back into 40k after a long break and decided to build my beloved space wolves. I love the viking barbarian feel to the army and wanted to really accent that with my colour scheme and with minor conversions on each model if possible. I love the pre- heresy colour schemes and also wanted something that was quite simple to paint (I hate line highlighting power armour) Below is my first grey hunter squad and rhino I painted up.

Thanks guys. For the mud I use the gw basing paint stirland mud applied liberally. This is then painted with bestial brown, highlighted and washed with agrax earthshade. The blood is made with tamiya clear red paint and uhu glue. To start I mix the tamiya red with abaddon black 75/25 mix and then add the glue. This is applied with cocktail stick to the model to get the dark blood and gore. Be careful as this dries very quickly. Once dried i go over again with the red(straight from the pot) for the lighter blood effect and streaks.

I converted these fenrisian wolves up a while ago before the new kits came out for them and thought it would be a shame to waste them. Quite pleased with the results as my green stuff skills are not the best, although I am getting better with practise. Fairly simple paint jobs so knocked them up pretty quickly. Also done a wolf priest conversion which I am quite pleased with (although reading up they are not the most effective hq choices to use. Oh well!). :). Sorry about the pics. For some reason they did not take too well today. Getting some weird striping as well but hopefully it does ruin them too much. Anyone know how to prevent this in the future? Taking them on my ipad camera

Thanks chaps

@squark - I did think aout having all the grey hunters with grey hair but felt thatthe army would feel too uniform especially as the armour is a gun grey. The different colours of hair add a little interest to the army I feel. The grey hair is saved for characters and wolf guard who are suitably grissled and ancient :)

@ pedrogz - I wanted a little patchiness as I was trying to get a dirty battleowrn feel. However in the photos the patchiness does come out quite alot, especially near one of the front tracks. As I do more hopefully my technique will improve. I will try with a flatter brush as you recomend. I am considering investing in an airbrush to apply washes and base colours as I have seen some nice flat effects done with airbrush and wash. Hopefully airbrushing will eliminate most of the patchiness.

Cheers for the input guys. Much appreciated

Hi folks. These are my wolf scouts that I had converted up at the tail end of fifth ed as they were awesome back then. I still really like the models and the marauder parts still look cool on them. I am trying to do as many units from the codex as I can, even if they are not very effective to play with, as I like to have as many options available for games, whether they be for casual fluffy play or more competitive in nature.

My only criticism is that Grey Hunters (and Wolf Priests, who are generally taken from their ranks at the earliest) are called that because they're, well, Greying. But, that's a tiny quibble. Love the detail work.

Just felt that I should point out a couple bits of old-school Space Wolves fluff:

First, the Wolf Priests are drawn strictly from the Long Fangs; Ulrik is a famous exception, but he was already a Wolf Guard when he moved over to become a Wolf Priest and had turned down being voted as a Wolf Lord, so one can surmise that he wasn't a pup.

"Wolf Priests are chosen from the ranks of the Long Fangs. Becoming a Priest means severing all ties with their former pack-brothers and Great Company. It is a great loss, and they are mourned as dead by those they leave behind. To symbolise this they take on a new name when they don the sacred skull-embossed armour. This is important, for the Wolf Priests must be seen as impartial for they arbitrate in any dispute among the Companies. A convocation of Wolf Priests advises the Great Wolf on matters of Chapter law and discipline."  WD156 and 246

Second, although age and maturity certainly play a role, and no doubt they will be showing signs of "greying", the reason "Grey Hunters" are called such, is due to the hunt of the Grey Wolves which is part of their rites of passage as a pack from the ranks of the Blood Claws.

"Usually by the time Blood Claws develop their first grey hairs the fury of the Blooding has receded, leaving them cunning and rational, as wily and deadly as wolves. They can control the urge to get straight to grips with the foe and are ready for the next stage in their initiation into the Chapter. They are sent out into the Hyperborean Wastes that lie to the west of the Fang to kill a Grey Wolf. The Grey Wolves do not grow as large as a true Fenrisian Wolf, but are nonetheless vicious predators, so a duel with one is far from one sided, even for a Space Marine. The Grey Hunter is expected to run the beast down and break its neck with his bare hands. He returns with the pelt as proof of his victory. Usually some part of the wolf skin is incorporated into his ceremonial dress or worn as a lucky charm."   WD156 and 246

Valerian

Damn, dude, you just burned yourself pretty bad there

Anyway, great looking army. I really love that grey hunter with the sword in the first picture - it's from the WHFB chaos warrior kit, right? I tried those out on some of my CSM once but they always looked too small. You've pulled it off perfectly, though. I think maybe it's something to with the size of the gauntlets on the chainsword hands (and possibly the chainsword hilts themselves). Also, the pose of that mini is absolutely stunning. He's one of the coolest space wolves I've ever seen.

I like the blue warpaint and the WHFB banners, too, they're both very nice stylistic touches.

Thanks MaveriK. I was hoping the scheme would be grimdark, so glad it comes out. I was never a huge fan of the bluish SW scheme (and had great difficulty in painting it) and when I saw the cover to prospero burns and all the pre heresy stuff I knew I wanted to do something that reflected the barbaric yet noble nature of the wolves. I agree about the yellow wolf. It sticks out a bit compared to the others in the pack. I was trying to vary the shades of brown/grey so there was some variation but I guess I went a little too far on that one :)
