Vlka Fenryka - The Volsung

I like your snow technic, however I feel like it takes away from your models which is a shame because they are really done nicely. My opinion is maybe tone it down a bit on the snow chunks... your troops are fine, I was refering more on your larger base HQ choices. Keep it simple.

Cool I will try and tone it down a bit on the snow on my next basing sesh.

Cheers Mammon. Yes I did get the idea from that blog. When I first started out playing space wolves it was an invaluable source of tactics and conversion ideas. Shame Adam decided to bow out of blogging as I really enjoyed his writing style and passion for the vlka fenryka.

Thanks guys. For the flesh I use a base of tallarn flesh, wash with ogryn flesh, re-highlight with tallarn flesh then a final highlight on the raised areas with elf flesh (all old gw paints). For a more gradual effect I sometimes do a stage in between the tallarn and elf of a 50/50 mix between the two, mainly for characters. Hope that helps :)

Hey guys. Another update. I felt my army needed some long rang support so i have converted up a squad of long fangs using the grey hunter kit and hunter killer missiles i had spare in my bits box. I think it works pretty well overall. Beats paying out for missile launchers on ebay ect anyways. Let me know what you think.

Cool fangs. I notice you're using red/white shoulder pads across your whole force instead of differentiating pack types by colour? It certainly looks a lot more cohesive that way. Honour marks on the left shoulders are interesting too, I always think having the company marking on every single one is a bit too... uniform for space wolves.

What kind of snow is that, by the way, is that woodland scenics?

@ russ brother 92. Thanks. I tried to give each a slight different position as the missiles themselves are very static and it is difficult to make them look interesting. Glad you think I pulled it off

@ A Kvit Ghost. Cheers for the compliment. The pad colours were inspired by the old school viking colours on their sails with the red and white stripes so I have tried to theme it throughout the army, even on vehicles so they look like a cohesive force yet retain some individuality and barbarianism. I figured long fangs were veterans so would not need to wear company markings and could have something a bit different to the rest of the army, kinda like campaigh honours or something. The snow is from gale force nine. I mix it with pva glue to get the "volume" then dust the top of the mound with the snow again and you get a nice fluffy lump :). I did not like the GW version as it was too stringy like static grass. The GF9 is much more flaky and works better in my opinion

Very nice, I like your dulled down colour scheme, very similar to what I had in mine for my own (as I have just begun my personal challenge of actually painting more than a few test models :) ).  So far my attempts are more like a very darkened German panzer grey.

I really do like how your Rhino turned out, how did you achieve the black to silver effect of your top hatch and behind the smoke launchers where the runes show through please?

@ mactire & night runner. Cheers for the positive feedback guys. Much appreciated. Sometimes creating and painting an army is done in a bit of a vacuum so hearing all my labour isn't half bad is music to my ears :)

@ infyrana. Thanks. Originally I painted mine a german grey too ( which looked great) to try and get a proper pre heresy colour scheme on my wolves, but I gave up after trying to line highlight all the armour plates, which drove me potty. I decided on the current armour colour as it is very easy and quick to do and does not involve any highlighting whatsoever. It is simply boltgun metal, nuln oil wash then x2 agrax earthshade washes. The silver to black is done simply using abaddon black and a very old paintbrush. The process is very similar to drybrushing but a little more paint is left on the brush so it is still wet, then applied using a swirling motion to the area you need. This gives the graduated effect as the paint starts to run out on your brush as you get to the outer edge of your 'swirl'. I mixed my abaddon black with a little lahmian medium as it was very thick out the pot and this may help a little in the application. Hope that helps

My favourite model of all time. Did a little green stuff work to wolf this bad boy up a bit and very happy with the result. I imagined him charging into battle, forging himself a bloody saga. I equipped him with the two claws as I thought it looked awesome. Not sure how effective it is on the battlefield but I dont care. Comments always welcome.

Nice! looking forward when I get my forgeworld stuff myself. Any advice for the contemptor? Did you need any pinning or did you just glue me together? how was the resin like when you painted it? soak in good or a few coats to get the colour right?

Cheers guys.

@ Russ brother 92. I posted the recipe for blood earlier but have copied it for your convenience :) The blood is made with tamiya clear red paint and uhu glue. To start I mix the tamiya red with abaddon black 75/25 mix and then add the glue. This is applied with cocktail stick to the model to get the dark blood and gore. Be careful as this dries very quickly. Once dried i go over again with the red(straight from the pot) for the lighter blood effect and streaks.

@ MavericK. I was really lucky with this one I think. I only washed it with a toothbrush and dishsoap and it was fine. No problems with the paint application or anything, just a standard chaos black undercoat with boltgun metal over the top. I did not pin any parts of it apart from pinning it on one foot to the base as it is rather heavy. So far had no problems with anything falling off. Good luck with your fw stuff. So far all of mine has been great to work with and required little to no prep.

Hey all. I have never posted up any pictures of my work in progress or ready to paint miniatures so thought I would just show this guy that I have just finished converting today. I wanted an option to run a power armoured line wolf as a cheaper option than the termies or to man a quad gun. Also when needed he could double up as a wolf battle leader or lord. To this end I magnetised his arms so all weapons can be changed (A few models in my army have interchangeable magnetised weapon arms and I plan to roll this out to most figures that can have multiple options. I have a thunderlord mid paint job that has weapons that can be swapped with this chap and my wolf guard also have been magnetised). Comments always welcome :)

Thanks. Yes it is from anvil industries. I have ordered a few of their things before, such as tabards ect, and the quality and price are really good. I can reccomend them if you need cloaks and stuff for your space wolves

Greetings comrades! I have been on holiday the last week and been painting like a fiend to get things ready for a small tournament here in the UK. It is a friendly affair called blog wars (no 6 this time) run by a blogger called Alex who writes for ' from the fang'. I decided to bring my wolves this time so had a fair bit to get ready for it. Alot was completed so I will slowly post up pics as and when I can. One of the caveats for blog wars is that every list must have a special character so my chosen one was arjac rockfist, converted from the wolf guard kit and a little greenstuff. Also done a rhino and another squad of grey hunters, complete with mark of the wulfen, wolf banner, wolf guard leader and 2 plasma gunners. Pics below (finished 24th out of 31 in the tourney, managed to draw or narrowly win all games but was not enough to bump me up the board) came second in best painted army though so that was nice.
