What washes do you use for this? I absolutely love this scheme , so primal.

@xxoblivionxx33. Thankyou :) sorry for such a late reply. Not checked in for quite a while. I use a boltgun metal base, which I then give a wash of nuln oil. Then 2 washes of agrax earthshade are applied to give the gritty feel to the armour. The beauty of this scheme is there is no line highlighting required, as the washes do most of the work. I also build the browns and ivory colours into the wash stage, so the last wash goes over the whole model and does all the fur ect as one smooth blend :)

Forgot to post this conversion a little while ago, but so pleased with it I thought I would get it up here. Been working on my wolves again so should have some more stuff coming up soon.

Over the last week I have been working in this 3 man unit of thunderwolf cav for a small tournament I am attending in June (blog wars 9). I must confess to a certain fondness for thunderwolf cav, amd wanted to run a list with at least 2 three man squads in (and I am mooching around with the idea of buffing each squad to five + characters).

For my first squad I did not give them many options, mainly arming them all with close combat weapons, so with this squad I wanted the weapon loadouts to be as versatile as possible. Magnetising is a fantastic way to add this versatility without breaking the bank buying multiple models just to get a few varying weapon loadouts. With all this in mind every thunder cav rider had a magnet in each shoulder socket and torso, and I glued and painted a load of different weapons for them to field as I needed (which I have forgotten to take a photo of). It works really well, although during taking the photos I realised the bolt pistol arm of the middle rider has a massive gap where the magnet does not sit flush. Bit of a pain but I went back this eve and greenstuffed the joint so it fits nicely now and does not look so odd.

Thanks bladewolf. The army scheme works really well on the twc I think, and I really enjoy painting fur, so these were a treat to paint.

The shields are indeed from anvil industries. I had them left over from a sisters of silemce conversion project I was doing (this is why the glued on bits are slightly more imperial, amd less wolfy but I liked them so did not bother to change it)

Been scratching my head for quite a while on how to do this conversion, as there is no official model for this loadout and I wanted at least one in my thunder wolf army list for blog wars 9. They also beat face which is another reason to be taking one :)

In the end I kitbashed Harald Deathwolf and a techmarine together as they are both awesome models and I had them lying around in my closet of doom collecting dust.

I first started on the thunder wolf by chopping the right leg off amd replacing it with a plastic leg I had in my bits box. I then carved out a niche in the eye and stuck in a targeter from a space marine bolter. Two final mechanical bits were added, one at the back of the wolf, and the other under his belly (which you can't really see in the photos). Finally the fur was resculpted on the damaged parts and to blend some mechanical bits back into the wolf body.

For the rider I began by sawing the techmarines legs off at the waist and doing the same to Harald. The torso form the techmarine and legs from Harald were then pinned together and the joints filled and sculpted back in with green stuff. Then I chose a couple of arms for the servo harness and put the rest aside as I wanted to keep a few spare for my next iron priest conversion (yes I have started another already, I am on a roll). These were then positioned to help balance the techmarine model a bit on the wolf, and finally tubing was either drilled into place or sculpted on to add more depth. Came out pretty well I think :). What do you all think?

@Maverick. Thanks :) He was a little fiddly to do but came out nicely in the end. Not long been ogling your iron priest centaur conversion. Great job man.

@Charlo. Thankyou very much :)

@Valerian. Cheers. I shall most certainly add it :)

@Konnavaer. Thankyou :) I had a blast creating them both, as it was pretty fun hacking, sawing and kitbashing all the bits together to form the final piece.

@Amarog. Youre a gent, cheers :). I originally went with just one arm but it did not sit right on the model so I added the extra one to the side. Even then it still felt wonky so I went back and added the piping at the back and the wheel and servo skull to the top to help the flow of the model. Just primed him today and started on the base colours, so check back soon to see him finished (hopefully)

Dammit... Really wishing I had not just looked through this entire thread. Sooo much time wasted! And im not referring to how long it took to read through... im referring to all the time I spent so far on my own models that might now be undone by stealing your scheme...

Great looking force, I only wish Id seen them earlier

your Dreads are awesome i will say. how are you running them rule wise? are you just using the rules out of the dex and calling them normal dreads or are you using them as SW contemptors? i was thinking of doing something like a Murderfang but with the axe and shield. and i happen to see your uses of the Murderfang head and i was like :jawdrop: . i just hope i can pull off my dread as kool as yours. ill be watching this for sure.

@Argyle. Thanks very much :). Hope I have not caused too much pain. It is a pretty simple scheme to replicate tbh and quite effective (even if I do say so myself :D). Feel free to steal away if you need :)

@Chef Wulfen. Thankyou. I run them just as standard dreads at the moment, but if needed I will run them as contempors (although not done this yet). I don't really like the standard dread chassis, so this was why I wanted to do the conversions, and the contemptor model is so damn cool I could not resist. Stay tuned as I have almost finished my Bjorn the fell handed conversion, and he is looking pretty good :)

Hey folks. It has been a busy week for me and I have got alot done in the hobby. I am in the process of clearing out my man room in prep for our first child, so have given myself the aim of sorting out the closet of doom of all my ongoing or planned projects and getting them built and ready for painting. Below is some of the fruits of my labour.

First on the list was my 5 fenrisian wolves I bought from ebay as part of a batch deal for mega cheap. Pretty simple job to build and base. Nice models and will fit in well with my thunder wolves force.

http://i1245.photobucket.com/albums/gg600/creamywynch/9f490d7c456e1aa6a598d63ab18227a0_zpszkl2fhek.jpg

Second was this 6 man thunderwolf unit (which was part of the ebay buy). I magnetised all the arms like my previous completed models so that each unit is fully customisable. A bit fiddly but well worth it for the long term flexibility of the army

http://i1245.photobucket.com/albums/gg600/creamywynch/30edb849e1c7f0ca51d15850bbeeb4f8_zps0uzoepeg.jpg

As part of the mentioned flexibility I magnetised over 15 of my grey hunters arms. They were languishing on my shelves as GW in its wisdom had decided to change the base options & points for the grey hunters (fully justifiable, but still a pain in the rear end). Now I hate having models sitting on the shelf when I have painted them, so out came the magnets, and each one was given one in the shoulder and torso and a spare arm for each was made with a bolt pistol, so they could be run as a close combat weapon squad, or with the base loadout of bolter and bolt pistol. Now all are wisiwig as needed :)

http://i1245.photobucket.com/albums/gg600/creamywynch/024e2c3fd430d28cd7493555315315b1_zpsdmrvwgrp.jpg

Part of my prep for blog wars 9 (tournament in June I am attending) was to convert my terminator unit so it had different weapon options. Seeing as I had the magnets out I decided to magnetise the new arms, so each terminator could be fully interchangeable with all the codex weapon options. The new arms were then painted to match. Dead pleased with these.

Finally I built my storm wolf that had been sealed in its box since Christmas. This was a really fiddly model to assemble, as the main chassis needed to be glued at the same time, which meant holding it in many parts while it dried to stop it falling apart. I was unconvinced on the aesthetics of this model, but once I had built it I really like it in the flesh. It is brutal and uncomplicated, but it is very space wolfy and I like that about it. I then converted up a scenic base for it to fly above with a model boat and anchor. Really pleased with the base, simple things for simple minds I suppose :D

Phew! Thats is all so far folks. Alot more coming so stay tuned. I have not been slicing my fingers and painting the carpet for nothing!

Thanks Amarog :). I am really pleased with the base too and I am glad the viking theme is reinforced with it. I am a little nervous about painting the storm wolf as it really is quite large :D

just gives you more space to express yourself and your army. im sure you will do it justice.

edit ~ no pressure haha

Ahhh I could not resist. I have made another one. He was actually alot simpler to do than the first but looks just as good I think.

I used the left over arms from the previous iron priest and re-used some parts from my old adeptus custode army to make a suitably mechanical backpack. Of course I added a few pieces of wire to give more dimension to the pose of the model, and they also help to tie the pack and the arms together. The torso and mechanicum axe are from a really old blood angels command squad I had left over in my closet of doom that I completely forgot about until the clearout. Found just at the right time to make me another iron priest :)

Thoughts and comments as always welcome :)

Managed to slap some paint on this badboy in between my furious week of scraping and gluing. I wanted to get something painted as I had quite a mound of assembled models piling up at the side of my desk.

He was pretty straight forward to paint. Mainly washes and drybrushing to achieve the desired effects. Unfortunately it was during the painting stage I realised what a horrible cast this model was. I tried to remove as many mould lines and defects as I could before painting, but it seems that applying the paint seemed to highlight even more. Oh well too late by then. Fortunately the washes hide most of it from view :) .

Overall the paint job looks pretty good, although I could have added more highlights to the power cables to make them pop a bit more. They look a little too flat even with washes applied. I am not too happy with the white skulls, and have changed it for the next one I am in the process of painting to a bone colour. My favourite part is definitely the face of the iron priest. I am really happy with the blending on the flesh, and feel it adds a nice focal point to what could otherwise be a slightly plain model. Also I absolutely love painting fur, so the thunderwolf was a real joy to paint. What do you all think of the finished model? Does the new background take away from the paint job or does it help? Trying a new way of photographing, so you comments and feedback would be much appreciated :)
