Greeting brothers of the rout. I have returned from forging my saga in the eye of terror and have bought back a mighty hero to add to the ranks of The Volsung. I give you Bjorn The Fell Handed!

@Cry Wolf. I first drew the runes onto the chassis with a very fine sharpie pen, amd then with a thin paint brush I used liquid greenstuff to paint over the pen lines. It took quite a few layers to get the depth of the runes, but well worth it once it is finished.

@Bladewolf. Thanks very much :). I really enjoyed painting the boat, and it adds a sense of drama to the model too, which I am rather pleased about.

Hail!

Wow it has been a long time brothers since I last posted (or actually done anything to my Wolves). I was painting my flying brick (stormwolf) and had got pretty far, when things started to go wrong one thing after another. Eventually I had a flip out and shelved the flyer unfinshed, never touching another wolf until this week. Here is where I got to with it. There is actually not to much to do to finish and the things I flipped out about are not too bad, and easily fixed.

But the real reason I am posting is the work I have been doing to my blood claws. I recently aquired the HH betrayal at calth box set, and decided to use the marines to bolster my SW forces (another post will follow this with some conversions I have done to expand the value of the kits, using old legs and torsos etc). As part of the process I decided that my blood claws could also be used to bolster the assault marine HH squad I have planned. To do this I needed to remove the backpacks, magnetise the marine, jump pack and backpack so they are all interchangeable depending on what I want to run the squad as (blood claws, assault marines etc). The added bonus is I can also use them as skyclaws now in 40k :)

Whilst doing all the magnetising I also decided to upgrade my basing using tabletop adapters (http://ttadapters.com) that I recently bought to update to 32mm bases for all my infantry. After seeing the HH marines and others on the tinterwebs mounted on the 32mm I realised that they look soo much better, creating more space for the marine to stand on and look much more epic :). The tabletop adapters are very good wuality. They are plastic and much more superior to the mdf or resin ones also on the market. The 25mm base slots into a slanted recess within the adapter, creating an (almost) seamless fit, and you really can't tell the difference between proper 32mm bases and these, as they are the same height and slant as the proper GW ones when attached.

Whilst doing this work I also decided to upgrade my basing scheme by adding some frozen tundra grass tufts. This adds a little more variety to the base I feel and also offsets the very dark colour scheme on the marines.

A comparison between the old and new basing

Hopefully I will have more progress to post up soon :)

Dude, they just keep getting better!

I'm usually not a fan of Chaos bitz used for SW conversions, but you've done it in a way that really feels "right" to me.  Love the darkened palette you're using for all the schemes, the tattoos, the used and weathered look combined with very clean brushwork.  Amazing stuff.

@KiltedMarine. Thanks very much :)

I think limiting the chaos bits to just the weapons helps to create an aggressive vibe without making them look like chaos marines. I chose the pallete because I wanted a more heresy era/13th company feel to the force, which has luckily played in my favour now I want to use them in both 30&40k :)

Do those adapters add any height to the model, or are they flush in terms of the bottom of the base?  I'm looking for the best option for converting my own army.

::Edit::- never mind; I got a better look at the photo.  These might be my choice!

No worries :).

The adapters do add a little height but it levels them up perfectly with the GW 32mm bases, which are slightly higher than the 25mm ones.

Here is a review of them I say recently which is pretty good. I highly recommend them to convert your bases of you are planning to do it

Well brothers, the re-basing continues apace, with another 13 miniatures upgraded to 32mm with the adapters and the basing scheme tweaked too. Really pleased with how this is coming along. I am actually enjoying the whole process, whereas I was dreading it for ages thinking it would be a complete chore. I got done 2 rune priests, a wolf priest and a ten man grey hunter squad. That leaves 5 long fangs & 20 grey hunters left to adapt to 32mm, and the rest of my army (4 dreads, 15 TWC, 5 wolf scouts, 10 Fenrisian wolves, stormwolf) with just the frozen tundra tufts needing adding. Also been working on painting a space wolves 10 man tactical unit for 30k , and I reckon I should have them finished by the end of the week. They look a little plain at the mo tbh but I will mix them into my current 40k GH marines for variety, so the squads should be a nice mix.

I'd almost forgotten how much I loved this blog/plog. Been away from wolves for a while, but it's things like this that make me know why no matter where I go, i'll always love the Vlka Fenryka!!

incredible work as always!!

Greetings. Been on a bit of a roll with the ole Space Wolves and have managed to batch paint a full 10 man 30k tactical squad this week, which is pretty darn amazing for me, as I usually struggle at 5. These were a cinch to do though. I think alot of it has to do with the lack of detail such as the edging, tokens, skulls etc that usually adorn the 40k SW models. Painting those it so time consuming I have realised, as without them I blasted through all ten in no time. They do look a tad plain but I will be mixing them into my current Grey Hunter units to expand them, and give a heresy vibe to the force. The bare heads and character of the 40k models adds a nice contrast to the more bare heresy armour. Below you can see a mix of two squads as an idea (ignore the special weapon loadouts, I am moving in a week so most of my models are packed away, but I wanted to just give a flavour of how the unit mix will look).

Love that vivid red, and the shading on the metallics is very well done.  The whites are clean looking without being flat, and you've aced those transfers (I assume the GC markings are transfers- if not, you've really aced them).  As always, making me feel bad about my own work by comparison!

Thanks dude. I am pleased the scheme works for the heresy stuff too, dark and gritty, which suits he style of the HH wolves more. Mixing them together with the 40k stuff has worked better that expected too, and now means I will have a ton of infantry to play with :)

They are all decals. I use a product called micro sol and micro set, which basically soften the decal so it adheres to the surface, and then melts into it, which is why they look so smooth. Highly recommend it if you do do decals, makes it much easier :)

Micro Sol and Micro Set are proof of the existence of the Omnissiah.  I'm a big fan.  Even with them, though, I have a really hard time getting the kind of crisp, clean results you have.  ::Tips hat.::
