Warhead01
Hey guys. So over last weekend I got two games in with my "new" Iron guard army. I lost one savagely and count my second game as a win. My opposition and his army was demoralized and stuff came up. so we called it. I have been thinking a lot about how to build my all comers list and I have decided I might do an inventory with points to help me out. So I guess this will be a sort of army blog. army building blog. Right now I have my models divided into 3 platoons 2 support platoon and 1 assault platoon. the support platoons as as follows. 2 squads with grenade launcher and missile launcher 1 squad with grenade launcher and heavy bolter 1 squad with lasscannon ( or if i want more moving units a meltagun replaces the lasscannon) Platoon command 2 grenade launchers The assault platoon is as follows 2 squads with flamers and Srg has a power weapon 3 squads with grenade launcher/flamers Platoon command has a flamer a grenade launcher and may also have a heavy flamer. I can put all 6 squads into chimera transports. if needed This platoon has fire support squads 2 mortar 6 "teams" 1 auttocannon 3 "teams and soon 3 missile launchers 3 "teams and 1 more mortar. 3 "teams" the company command is as follows Comany commander , may get power weapon. 2 meltaguns or snipers 1 lasscannon or heavy bolter 1 Master of ordnance 1 body guard can add more 1 Commissar lord power weapon and carapace armour demo team 3 cyclops I will be adding a special weapon squad to the assault element with a heavy flamer a demo charge and a meltagun. when I am able I will add another special weapons team with 3 grenade launchers. I have 10 rough riders I would like to add as well but they are questionable for now but I want them in smaller games for sure. I want to build the above as the core for all my armies over 1000 points I will then only change out heavy, fast and elite units as needed. On my table behind my formation, listed above, I have 1 vanquisher 1 punisher, 3 thud guns a vulture, 3 exterminators and 1 ADL with quad gun. ratling snipers and trooper Marbo. I am thinking about adding bombards as well. So my next post will have all my unit points totals and some combinations. If you have any thoughts or suggestions please post. Thanks for looking. WarriorFish
That's a lot of glorious infantry, always good to see lots of Mortars too! I think you can pretty much do whatever you like with them, but where are all the tanks? This using the normal Guard codex, rather than a Krieg list right? Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/278815-men-of-metal-steel-legion-and-mordian-iron-guard/#findComment-3432705 Share on other sites
Warhead01
This will be out of the normal codex. I don't have enough Kriegsmen yet. But having skimmed IA12 I really liked the idea, format for the assault list and I think it feels right for Mordians. Although the AKoK would do it better. I noticed in the DKoK list that heavy weapons were removed from all the platoons and with the loss of orders as well I am putting them on pause. I really want 60 to 90 more infantry men that would feel about right. I only have 60 right now but I have enough for allies.. The IG codex provides quite a bit. 50 point squads vs 70 point squads. That 20 point difference is a lasscannon. Where are the tanks? you ask. The tanks are not important yet. The core of the army will if I am lucky be intimidating and powerful. ( and win! once I know what I'm doing!) But the next 1000 points will be all armor aircraft and artillery. The key here is that I want this to look and feel like it own army. I don't want to borrow much of anything from the Legion (Steel Legion) So that should limit my use of transports. The tanks belong to their own tank company, in theory. the demolishers, which include the punishers and exicutioners are pure troop support. Everything falling under it's own organization. One of the reasons for this is so I can paint unit markings and numbers... The thudguns are being loaned from the Krieg collections , the were needed to bring ...some one to heel. But I really like them! The Mordian line has a more rounded collection of models. officers and sgt's being the exception.I have a little over a squad incoming from ebay. and after that I think only mortars will be order unless I can get hold of heavy bolters and auttocannons. I think I have gotten ahead of my self in this post. WarriorFish
The tanks are not important yet. That one word saved you from threats of bolt pistol Tanks are best with lots of infantry support. Who has the best tanks? Guard. Who can field lots of infantry? Guard again. Seems like a match made on Terra! Warhead01
Don't get too silly guys. Were still just working out the infantry core of the army. Tanks were listed as unimportand for two reasons 1 I have so many and 2 I'm not to that stage of the list. Remember, "Ignorance is negligence and negligence is a shooting offence". Ah and one more of my own! "Reading wins wars". I will have a good post with related material this evening if everything works out. Question. Camo cloak on a command squad? yes or no? Ah, good news! My Ebay order and my Apoc book have arrived! Argun
Well, I'd say camo cloaks only if you've got important guys in there (or if you've bought a lot of upgrades for the squad) +1 to cover saves is handy for keeping that important HQ alive. Tanks are best with lots of infantry support. Who has the best tanks? Guard. Who can field lots of infantry? Guard again. Seems like a match made on Terra! Also: consider this sigged. WarriorFish
I usually spend a few points on my CCS so the camo isn't too much of an overhead to keep them alive and issuing orders. Factor in the additional models like advisers and bodyguards and it becomes a better deal as the squad size increases so like Argun I'd say it's normally worth it if you've got plans for your CCS to stick around and be useful. My CCS is always important to my plans, plus my commander is dear to me. After all his countless heroics over time I'll do all I can to keep him alive and leading/inspiring the troops to greater glory in the name of the Emperor. What price can you put on that? :P Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/278815-men-of-metal-steel-legion-and-mordian-iron-guard/#findComment-3433261 Share on other sites
Warhead01
In my order from GW I also got Gaunt and his boys. This has me thinking about a second company commany and second master of ordnance. My Ebay box had 1 more squad in it which was accounted for in the assault platoon. Also it had extra heavy weapons team loaders/ shooters with out heavy weapons and 2 full missile launcher teams. right now the only thing I am lacking are flat 60mm bases. I think my orks kila kans may have some... I thing the guard need them more.. WarriorFish
I think they come in GW's base set but that's a horribly inefficient way of getting them. Raid the greenskins or eBay for them, you can get some fancy terrain ones if that's your kind of thing too :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/278815-men-of-metal-steel-legion-and-mordian-iron-guard/#findComment-3433725 Share on other sites

Warhead01
Sadly those are the ones I am using right now. I took a bag full of about 20 from my brothers old miniature box. I don't know where he managed to get a bag with so many in it. But I know they were bought several years ago. I did loot the green skins. I thought I had 1 more missile and loader but the loader turns out to be a mortar man. these mini's are funny. the shooter in this case has a remote. That gives me a total of 8 missile launchers. Started messing with the uniform colors here the first set of colors I have painted and like. http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-iUENiAdMxHA/Uhie0nMOP8I/AAAAAAAABh0/pInuT1oBELU/s320/217_0089.JPGhttp://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Twjc_7pk5uo/Uhie2XakqWI/AAAAAAAABiE/KASLj0HGxBI/s320/217_0090.JPG Field grey pants black boots and a coal black coat. coal black is made by P3. I am still looking for the dark green I want to use. so expect another test model. Heres my "commissar lord" http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-YdZDhvqtKeE/Uhie1EXl7WI/AAAAAAAABh8/dlbq23mYfIw/s320/217_0079.JPG I have been looking at the cover of the Apocalypse book. If the Steel Legion gets plastics I hope they look as good as the legion looks on that cover. Sort of excited. This is the core for the Mordians. Now to put a list together for an 1850 points game. More when I have it worked out. robertn1
good list so far. wish i could see the look of you putting the final work on the list so i can beat it this time around. i forgot to tell you from last time dont drop the manticore if you play on running the thud guns because it puts less pressure on make you decisions on which side of table you plan on bombing that turn thoe. WarriorFish
A glorious horde of infantry, they should be able to put a punishing amount of fire out. This reminds me I really need to get more HWTs painted up so I can be more effective with my infantry hordes! When will we get to see the squads all painted up? Warhead01
Just let me know how many points I need to have ready. And bring enough food to feed my army. After reading fasha's post in the new to IG thread. I am beginning to want to try 2000 points with just infantry. Can you say all day game. Well. Maybe not any time soon I will need to buy the rest of the Mordians to put it all together. WF. You task me sir! And I will "lead the way" again. But I'm old and broke down.. I'm not the Painting Tyrannosaurs I used to be. But I think I can manage a squad or two. My commission work is moving along at just the right speed. The best part though is knowing what to soldiers should look like! Stay tuned in to this vox freq for more. Warhead01
I've had a thought. I was thinking about a banner for both guard armies. The Steel Legion having the house of Dracula themed crest and the Mordians having a crest from the House of Frankenstein. Both mixed with imperial icons. Just have to find the pictures I need to draw them up. Warhead01
I managed to get a game in this evening 2000 points of Steel Legion VS Space wolves. The field of battle is now littered with power armoured corpses and destroyed vehicles. "Our guns were mighty and proved that None could stand against us this day!" The Commander was in his office trying to file reports dealing with food fuel and ammo consumption but was repeatedly interrupted by out going fire . He had been up all day with no nap and just a few cups of recaf to keep him going. The master of Ordnance constantly on the vox.. War is tough! So much to put up with. Some days. emperor alone knows how he keeps going. And to top it off the Chimera parked ahead of him had a damaged turret! More paper work! That crew should be flogged! Not too much to tell. We deployed in for a pitched battle over a relic. Even during the first turn of night fighting, a pre dawn engagement, The demolisher fire , all the fire trapped the Space wolves in their corner. I am sad to say the sons of Russ did not have a good showing. The were trapped and then cracked open and shelled. At the end of three turns they had but 1 immobile Land raider left on the field. I was glad to get the game but less then thrilled that the mighty WLK had such bad luck. All around I did not expect to deliver such a kicking. He fought until we stopped it. I had one Chimera loose a turret one chimera was immobilized and the demolisher took a hull point on an overheated Plasma Cannon. The Colossus were way too nasty, I wont be using them against him again. It wasn't fun. The LBT did very well I have had my doubts about a standard battle tank for a while but it did very well. The Vulture with twin punishers was just savage. I had been worried my list wouldn't bring enough heat. But I was wrong. redundancy to conquer. Pictures very soon though only a few were taken the camera died. clanfield
sounds about right uberwolve sadly to say they will probably nerf us when the new codex emerges. more paperwork than action is the norm ,in the spirit of things I agree some times its dull just pounding the guts out of some one I had a recent game against the tau I tabled him in two rounds and rather jokingly only lost 1 guardsmen 1 hull point and a immobilized russ , hammer of the emperor Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/278815-men-of-metal-steel-legion-and-mordian-iron-guard/#findComment-3442586 Share on other sites
WarriorFish
Paperwork - the true menace of the 41st Millennium! Sounds like it was a bit too one sided to be a great game, but that's how it goes sometimes especially when there's a bad army match up (I'm sure we've all been there... on both sides). Sounds like maybe his force wasn't mobile enough and was gunned down quickly, did he use enough transports? Warhead01
robertn1. Never going to happen. clanfield. Dude.. I have been playing for a very long time and I'm still a bit of a 6th noob. It was a shock. I ran 3 mounted platoons. no vets. 1 2 colossus, 1 russ and a demolisher. It bothers me that things went so well. I like to win, we all do. This was the warcrime we all strive for. He, WLK, took it. It had to be very hard for him. wariorfish. He had 1 landraider crusader,1 wolf lord, 1 rune priest, about 5 or 6 wolf guard in TDA, 4 rhinos full of grey hunters, and a vindicator. The demolisher stopped his raider in its tracks and cracked oper a rhino. he attempted to recover but 1 bad drift from the vindicators cannon dinged 2 Chimera. one lost a turret the other was stunned. the Demolisher broke him. The colossus killed his men and broke open his rhinos as did the russ. the chimeras shot at his me or other rhinos in range. and my men in side either kept firing at his land raider with krak missiles or fraged his clusters of men. His wolf lord went down to the vulture's punnisher cannon. He had been wounded once prior to that. If we had played till the landraider had been destroyed I would have taken the relic away and lost a vehicle protecting my men. It was an excellent showing for the guard. And a bad evening to be a sober space wolf. In the interest of fun I will change my list for the next time we meet his wolves. But that one stays on the books as a good solid list. I only chose that list over my foot list so we could play a quicker game. will post the list for my records later.
