Nature vs. Nurture, the What If? edition

Okay, I believe I currently have every story and related post organized into the table. The code is still giving me trouble so I'm going to go ahead and make a thread to ask for help on that. When it's fixed, I'll go ahead and post the table in a different thread and then just keep updating it from this thread so I don't have to keep digging back and forth for it.

Bit of an implementation here I've casually read about half this thread. Now I get to feel like I contributed something.teehee.gif

lol, don't worry, you'll get a citation from me for your help. I just need to get back to my computer to see if I can get it to work. Especially since there have been a couple of removals and one addition.

The table height thingy is still bugging me, I'm certian there's some niggling variable I've overlooked that would let us make it look nicer.

The Imperial Tigers/Imperial Hospitallers

After the reunification with their primarch upon Prospero, the newly christened Imperial Tigers spent a year on Prospero before moving on, establishing a legion fortress in the desert at the site where their gene father had slain their namesake, taking in recruits whilst Anubis familiarized himself with his new legion as they changed their colors and heraldry in his honor. Their warplate became lunar white with the exception of their helms and shoulder plates with took on the burnt orange of the Prosperonian Tiger, their symbol a staff guarded by a pair of tigers rampant flanking in the azure of the sky.

The legion was making preparations to rejoin the crusade when word come from one of the nearby systems that had begun trading with Prospero of attack by orks, the first wave being beaten off by the defense ships that were now mostly too damaged to be of further use. Immediately, Anubis took those those elements of the legion that were prepared to the system. When they got there, 3 planets had been overrun, as had over a dozen moons, with the remaining two planets and various stations and moons besieged. Whilst the crude Ork vessels proved no match for the legion fleet, the land battle was another matter, as there were no Titans present to counter the Ork gargants and stompas.

It was in this campaign that Anubis proved himself with staff, blade and mind. In one battle he shielded his warriors from the ork ordinance whilst he guided the legions land speeders to destroy the ork artillery, in another, he cooked the ork warlord and his bodyguard inside their mega armour. It was also in this campaign where Anubis's teachings concerning the protection and aiding the civilian population and the importance of the apothecaries and techmarines art  took hold in the legion.

After the arrival of the full force of the legion and an imperial titan squadron had allowed the Imperial Tigers to cleanse the system, those remaining of the governing councils thanked the primarch and his legion, whilst also asking for aid in preparing there defenses so as not to be overrun again. To this Anubis agreed, and so the first of the legions Hospice keeps was established, and the first recruits outside of Prospero or Terra entered the legion.

In light of their lord's views, the legions number of apothacaries increased, with many sergeants learning the basics of their skills, whilst the legion's techmarines produced more land speeders following their success. Prospero, whilst beautiful and the legion's home, had a far too small population to provide the recruits for all but the smallest legions, and after the ork attack so close to Prospero Anubis did not like the idea of leaving his home and the surrounding systems unguarded, and so the establishment of legion Hospice keeps and the intake of recruits from systems close to Prospero started.

The aim I'm going for the Imperial tigers is a mix of the knights hospatilar, monastery/nunnery and psychicness of Prospero, so legion Hospice keeps established on the planets brought into compliance, which provide both protection and some kind of response to epidemics whilst also providing recruits. From the descriptions, I doubt Prospero could have sustained legions bigger then either the Thousand sons or Emperor's children.

Battle wise the legion would make extensive use of landspeeders, lascannons and possibly flamers as a result of that first campaign against the orks, and whilst Prospero would give a high number of pyskers, the gene seed of them would not increase them like the cannon thousand sons, they would be just as skilled due to the practices of Prospero, with a focus on protecting and healing their battlebrothers.

I apologise about the roughness of it, just getting the idea down before I forget and get some opinions before I work too much on it.

If I could explain the ideas in my last snippet a bit:

I see Sanguinus as actually being able to make a difference on Nostromo where canon Curze and that other Primarch who went down the memory hole couldn't, because he is so obviously not just a mere human. To look at him is to behold...how did Lorgar put in Betrayer? "An avatar of something beautiful and divine in this galaxy my Father insists is godless." It's because of his obvious differences that people would LISTEN to what he is saying.

I'm imagining his Legion in white armor with red trim, and teardrops acid etched beneath the eye lenses of their helms (with the shape and color of the drops an indication of rank, accomplishments, etc, perhaps?)

Colchisian Dorn:

Canon Dorn has always had an...interesting relationship with pain and suffering. And one of the things many religions share is...I'm having trouble putting it into words. The nobility of those who suffer for their beliefs, are martyred for their faiths, who endure suffering for others. "Greater love hath no man than this, that he lay down his life for his friends."

The scene I imagined when I had the idea for him:

The Covenant of Colchis is still practicing human sacrifice (see The First Heretic, where Lorgar tells Argel Tal that Erebus and Kor Phaeron would have recognized the bloody ritual that Ingethel is conducting) but they do allow a volunteer to take one of the victims places. Dorn steps in between the priests and the first victim, and tells them to take him instead. They turn that fellow loose, do their cutting on Rogal, and get ready to move onto the next one...when Dorn stands up, steps between them and that victim as well, and says to take him instead. And he repeats this until every victim has walked free, and he himself has been mutilated beyond belief...but he rises from the horror of his sacrifice and tells the assembled people that from now on there will be a new Covenant.

And then they make him King of Colchis, because, well, what ELSE can you do in that situation?

I can see his Legion having the practices of Vraal in Soul Hunter, or the Excoriators in Legion of the Damned, where they repair their armor and weapons after the fight but leave as much of the cosmetic damage as they can, just to show how much they can take. Of course, when you start taking pride in pain, actively seeking out suffering to show you can handle more of it than the next guy....sounds like somebody's angling for the Dedicated Slaanesh or Nurgle Legion spot!

Warmaster Fenrisian Magnus:

In A Thousand Sons, the daemon tells the Crimson King that he was one of the first choices to lead the Heresy. Now, canon Magnus is a fighter, but he's a sorcerer and scholar first and foremost (again, in my opinion), and thus a sub optimal choice to lead the Crusade compared to a conqueror like canon Horus. But what if he was raised in a different culture? What if, instead of the libraries of Prospero, he grew up learning precepts like "We pay the iron price for what we take!" and "You keep what you kill!". With a more martial aspect combined with his psychic potential, and a slightly less wholehearted embrace of the Warp, he might very well be the Warmaster, particularly if the Cthonian Primarch was, say, Konrad Curze, who regardless of his raising would probably not be someone you'd want running a galaxy spanning war, what with the visions of the worst possible futures and the burgeoning mental instability.

Then the second son the Emperor found might very well have a shot at the top spot.

As for the name...Grimman = Grey Man = One of the aspects Odin, who also had one eye and could be a bit of a jerk sometimes.

What is are greatest weapon?

Knowledge.

First code of the lupus order.

Men died and babies where born under the red comet that herald his coming. The forest world of caliban from space seemed idilic continant spanning forest and blue grey oceans. The surface was a different story the forest canopy was so thick the sun could barley make it's way to the forest floor. Yet it was the beast of caliban that where the true terror of this blighted world everything in the forest seemed hostile to human life from the insect to the mighty caliban lion. It was here on this world that the primarch Leman russ was to grow into the man he would became.

Found moments after his incubation pod had crashed by the lady seraph the young primarch was quickly carried back to her home where she awaited her husband a knight of the lupus order for she felt that in this infant boy the questions the order had could perhaps have new light shed upon them. One look at the boy his wife presented to him had aniel shocked in front of him sat a boy who if he was to believe his wife fell to caliban from the sky. Yet it was the eyes of the boy eyes no infant his eye should have eyes older then the mere moments this boy had drawn breath. Aniel did not present the boy to the order like his wife thought he should instead he took the boy under his wing and being to teach him everything the order and aniel himself knew. Naming the boy Leman russ a name honored among the order of lupus for being the greatest knight in there long history both as warrior and scholar. It was not long before leman had outstripped his adopted father quickly grasping the basics of math and science aniel quickly ran out of his own knowledge before the boy was more then a half year in his home so it was that aniel began to teach the boy combat the fighting styles that the great orders practiced starting with the lupus and ending with the upstart Order of the knight Luthor.

It was during his third year that his father was called away a beast had ravaged a near by farmstead and the order was called out to destroy the beast. Leman beg his father to come along but aniel denied him saying your are not a knight son when I return you well stand for induction into the order. It was at this time leman would learn diplomancy and state craft not from his father but from his mother the lady seraph who the running of there household fell to on her husband frequent hunt's. Seraph was adept at using common scene even common ground to keep the peach among her people She was better at using gossip and knowledge of her ladies as weapons.

I am married to a master of the lupus order you truly believe I don't know why you have come here now master luthor?

The first attempt of luthor to court the lupus order to his cause.

The primarchs rise was swift once his father returned he stood for a day and a night and did not falter he bested his master at arms in every trial and he consumed the knowledge the lupus order had gathered in there chapter keep. Yet it almost came to nought luthor's words had found minds willing to listen and a great hunt was called to end the beast of caliban once and for all. The knight of lupus understanding the nature of the beast and caliban better then most gathered allies of there own where the cold logic of his father failed it was the lesson's he learned from his mother leman used to sway friend and foe alike to comman cause. A year passed and the two saids seemed to be at loggerheads neither side abel to get the upper hand not until the night of harvest moon when aniel and other leaders of there orders meet in parley with luthor and his knight's. What happened none know those who deed the deed are going now but when morning came aniel and the leaders of his allied order where found dead. In the havoc caused by this treachery the order struck and for a time seemed to have the upper hand. Until leman returned upon hearing the news of his fathers murder the young master went into a fury that only his mother seemed abel to calm.

There is a savageness inside you my son your father missed it all these years but I have not your rage need be cold your fury tempered or we are lost it falls to you to end this conflict. Caliban stands on the brink we'll it fall.

The lady seraph to her son after the news of his father death.

The knights of lupus retreated into the forest for a year they bit at the heel's of the order hit and run raids strikes where the order never thought the wolfs to be. The lupus bleed the order until they where weak and then they struck in savage attacks the knight of lupus ripped out the throat of the order. So it went for a year the order never abel to rest never abel to recover retreated to the rock there chapter fortress. There luthor fought russ and it was there luthor died. With luthor dead russ offered terms those knight willing to serve his order where welcome those who refused would become hedge knights they would call no order home and serve the people of caliban in whatever way they where abel.

Seven months after that last battle the sky above caliban burned again the emperor of mankind had found one of his lost son's. Leman Russ was told of the great crusade and how the emperor had created 20 son's to lead his legions in this crusade to unite humanty. Russ was told of the VI legion and his gene son's of the victories they had won and how he's leadership could only bring more honor to the VI.

He says he's your father but is he. Did you learn at his side did you sit in awe at his feet as he told you the history of caliban. Did he teach you to fight with sword or spear and shield. He may be your gene sire but he is not your father never forget that leman never forget that your father was the master of the lupus order.

The last words spoken to leman russ by his mother.

For all the words the emperor spoke it was a chance encounter with the primarch of the XV legion a man with a love of knowledge not unlike russ own and the man malcador who told leman of all the other worlds and the knowledge they contained that swayed the master of wolfs to accept his fathers legion and bring wolf war to space.

Well there,s my take on Russ being raised by the lupus order on caliban.

Sorry space wolf fans.

As to his "mother" there are too few females in the primarchs lives.

Sanguinius

Planet Colchis

"There are no gods, nor spirits, or deities. There is only the truth."

A very different take on a Sanguiunus of Colchis, but may I make one suggestion? It seems kind of odd that he'd be denying the very existence of spirits, given that his first great triumph was against a cabal of Warp Sorcerers. I personally think something like this:

"Are there great powers that rule the Warp? Yes. Of course. I am not a fool, brother. But there are great forces that rule the materium as well: Gravity, magnetism, radiation, and so forth, yet no one ever feels the need to crawl on his belly and beg for THEIR favor."

Would make a better color quotation.

This is turning into a "I'm better than you" match.

'Even though in the shadow I could not see, by it's touch, I knew it to be evil.'

I wash my hands of this.

Yeah, it might be worth taking a step back and not getting too involved with our characters / interpretations.sweat.gif

We can save any voting on interpretations for another thread at another time, maybe, and just keep this to fleshing out the possibilities.

There's a ton of cool stuff that could be done with lots of the Primarchs, and it's fun to just mix things up once in a while.

You misunderstand me. I am pulling out of this project enitrely, and my stories go with. This is the reason I don't participate in the Liber, as too many people ridicule instead of offering constructive advice. I don't tolerate such actions, by principle.

Best of luck folks, and enjoy.

Understood. sad.png

I do tend to carry the Liber approach to C&C with me everywhere I go, probably as a result of spending three years+ locked in there.sweat.gif

My sincerest apologies if anything I've written has contributed to your decision to drop out. It's a darn shame to lose your awesome stories!

Magnus on Baal

By the will of the Ruinous Powers of Chaos, a gestation capsule came to land on Baal Secundus, the second moon of the post-atomic Feral World of Baal.  There the infant Primarch was discovered in the place now called The Hero’s Fall by one of the wandering tribes of humans who called themselves the Folk of Pure Sons, or more simply, The Sons.  Magnus’ life nearly came to an end then and there, as the touch of Chaos had altered the infant.  Pure copper skinned infant radiated with psychic energy that was seen by the naked eye.  Luckly the leader saw in the child a future of defeating the mutants that ravaged the uninfected.  The leader brings the child to the tribe’s shaman who quickly takes the child under his wing and within months has taught the child everything he can about his own abilities.  Soon the child is now the master in a sort with his old mentor guiding him along his path to the best of his abilities.

But as he grows older he understands that there is a lack of resources on the planet and joins with the warriors on their scouting parties and hunting parties where even here he quickly grasps the concepts of desert warfare and soon outpaces their best hunters, scouts, and warriors then to top it off with his own powers he is able to bring his people to a stable location with clean water and abundant food.

As the tribe was finishing building their first defensive wall ever to start their city-state, they were of course attacked by the Baalite mutants, who over ran the sentries which means no alarm was raised.  As Magnus was within a deep meditation *talking with his real dad*, he was unable to warn his people of the oncoming attack.  Within moments the mutants were among The Sons killing everyone they could find, the shaman and his own adopted father were killed within the opening minutes.  This enraged Magnus and using his skill at arms as well as mental abilities killed the Baalite mutants within seconds, saving the remaining tribe members.  Magnus understood there that his world would never be safe until the Baalite mutants were either destroyed or cured and brought into the fold.  Unfortunately it would prove to be the former of the two that Magnus had to choose as he did not have access to the medical equipment needed to find a cure and save the mutants even those that wanted to be cured.  All he had access to was old rad units that The Blood used to stay away from highly irradiated areas and keep themselves clean.

After a solid year of purging the Baalite Mutants as well as finding other groups of survivors and incorporating them into his ever growing tribe.  Learning all he could from the other tribes Shamans and warriors about offense and defense, as well as when to strike and when to fall back.  Magnus was able to finally corner the last of the Baalite mutants in a valley with no exit.  This is where Magnus came to the front of his army and looked at the Baalite mutants and said like he said to every other group of mutants “This is your last chance to join us and live among us by our rules and laws.  Join us in peace.  Or Die here like so many others have.”  The answer is always the same but Magnus always tries.  From here he is able to start his plans for peace among those with him.

From that Valley he starts his first city of Technology and Learning.  He first brings all the shaman together from the world and has their first concave with them and they all learn from each other and then from Magnus on how to find the perfect spots for fresh water and abundant food stuffs.  As well as locations for old factories under the ground from ages long ago.  From those locations he sends his brightest and most able bodies to learn what they can from the factories, which the first one turned out to be a terraforming machine.  Not a planet wide machine, but machine that will in time reforges a planet into a habitable one.  Magnus and the others tinker with the machine and finally get it working correctly and allow it to go to work.  The second was a hydroponics machine that was able to create enough food for the entire planet.  The third was a STC of a forging plant that would be able to create anything from nails to ship parts.  This machine became the most important one as Magnus was able to create roads to connect the growing cities as well as energy plants to power those cities.  The forth was a medical STC able to come up with a cure to any known illness.  This sadden Magnus to where he spent the better part of a month in solitary confinement, if he had found this machine earlier maybe he could have saved the mutated population and his world would have be better for it.  But the person he talked with every night explained that while the machine would have cured them of their problems their problems were also a culture of violence and it would have only solved the outward appearance.

On his 10th year of peace after the cleansing of the planet a bright light appeared in the night sky, and landed on the landing pad created by Magnus himself to his own specifications a brighter light appeared as the door opened.  Magnus knew who this was already and strolled right up to him and embraced his own father who he had talked with almost every night.  This was the first time they would have meet face to face.  This was a joyous occasion as not only did father meet son and son meet brothers, but the sons also meet his own sons who had a problem.

Instead of throwing a festivity as every other planet had Magnus and his father went straight to work on a cure.  Magnus watched as his sons mutated like the ones before hand and swore he would not do it again.  The Emperor only nodded and with the medical STC and after three months of no sleep and very little food Magnus found a way to slow down the degrading effects.  After 18 more months a cure was found.  His sons numbered only 998 but his sons and legion were saved.  At this point a festival was held by the population that would not hear no from anyone on the matter.  For a month the festival was ever ongoing.  Until the Emperor stated as a matter of fact about his role in the galaxy, and the conquest of the galaxy for the betterment of mankind, and took his leave, at this point complete control of the XV Legion was handed over to Magnus, and a new name was given to them for all they had been through.  The Thousand Sons.

His own sons were of course gifted like their father to varying degrees, they added to the ever growing library of knowledge that Magnus had started.  At this point his legion stable Magnus threw himself into expanding his legion to a size that would be a force to be reckoned with.  It seemed that the sons of the shamans would be the most worthy of implantation with few rejections and those of The Blood without their own powers were to become some of the finest Generals and warriors of the Thousand Sons in remembrance of the survivors of the unstablizing effect Magnus gene-seed had until the cure was found.  Within years Magnus Legion had grown from 998 to 99,888 with his own training as a General and his own powers he was able to fight wars with lose of fewer men compared to the other Legions.

Within a few decades few Legions could match his size and the expansion rate at which his legion absorbed the galaxy matched the other older Legions.

But of course his “dabbling of the warp” brought over people and organizations that did not like this.  Magnus saw this coming and went to his father and asked him for his advice.  Together they came to a conclusion.  Magnus and the Emperor knew of that which was in the warp and knew that the Librarium that most Legions had created was the only real weapon against the predatory nature of the warp.  They had to find a way to contain the unease and still allow the use of his son’s powers.  The Soul Binding was the answer.  Magnus to the Emperor was the first in front of all his brothers.  From there the Emperor stated that all Librarians would be Soul Bound to the Emperor.  This answer satisfied all that were there, as the Emperor would have a link to any weak spot in their forces.  So any legion with a Librarian would be Soul Bound to the Emperor, ship
would fly to his location a warriors training would be done under the Emperor about secrets not to be shared outside the Librarium and then a Soul Binding.

I think I did not do a bad job here...but hey only spent an hour on it and I am tired from a lack of sleep...haha

does anyone have a currently updated list of Primarchs/Worlds taking into account the withdrawal of Heathen's work?

Have up to page 20 with the exception of Heathens' work and Wade Garret's Doc Holiday Fulgrim(both on the request of the authors), but the catch is that it is all jumbled up in codespeak. With Eddie's help, I've managed to get the table working but it keeps reverting the hyperlink to the very first page. Although, I might have an idea on how to fix that. Give me a few minutes and I'll try to implement the changes. Don't forget to keep your fingers crossed, aquilas winged and sacrifices sacrificed.

I'm loving a lot of the ideas being thrown around here.

Hopefully this one lives up to the high standards everyone's setting.ermm.gif

-=-= Ferrus Regnus, The Iron King of Cthonia and master of the Iron Guard =-=-

Ferrus paused at the window, looking out from his warship the Corona Metallia. Below lay yet another world that offered resistance to The Imperium. Reaching for his war helmet, decorated with the sign of his office - a burnished steel crown set into the armour itself - Ferrus regarded the world below with his typically stoic expression, casting his mind back...

Raised by one of the many near-feral gangs that ravaged Cthonia, the boy's innate authority saw him nicknamed 'Renus', an old Cthonian word for 'prince'. Though ihis first responsibility was to manage the gang's limited armoury, constant attacks by other desperate gangs saw the gang members who ranked above Renus gradually thinned out in number. Eventually Renus gained leadership of his gang. Renaming his crew the Iron Guard, Renus instilled a fresh sense of purpose and vigour into those under his command. Renus showed a keen understanding of the scattered technologies around them, and the Iron Guard would seize areas containing anything that could be repurposed into weapons. These weapons would be used to conquer other gangs, eliminating their leadership and offering the rank and file a simple choice - join the Iron Guard or die fighting.

Eventually the Iron Guard conquered a city. Then another. Then a third, with a space port. And their success continued, all of Cthonia would eventually serve the man now called by those under his rule Ferrus Regnus, the Iron King.

Ferrus marched down to the landing bay, his men already awaiting their leader in neatly organised columns. Their Captains stood assembled respectfully to one side of the Primarch, their steel-cloured plate resplendent with engraved honours and golden decorations, their weapons raised in salute. Ferrus nodded his acknowledgement, and signalled for everyone to board their vessels.

When the Emperor had arrived at Cthonia and met with his estranged son, Ferrus had immediately felt a kinship stronger than even the loyalty of his own men. Proud to help fulfil the Emperor's dream for humanity, he pledged himself to the Emperor and was granted his own Legion, into which he incorporated as many of his Iron Guard as possible, even taking the name for his Legion. The Emperor took his son under his wing, and taught him much of what he would need to take part in the Great Crusade.

Ferrus proved an excellent student. His natural ruthlessness helped him adapt swiftly from the Cthonian gang wars to full-fledged combat on the fields of a hundred worlds, and his favoured strategy of destroying the enemy leadership made the transition almost flawlessly. Ferrus Regnus was skilled in all arts of warfare and strategy, but still held a special place in his heart for the rare, ancient technologies such as those found in the Legion's tanks and Terminator Armour. His natural aptitude for working with technology and the influence of his Father helped Ferrus craft several ornate yet functional weapons and armours for his Legion, each a true masterwork.

The Iron King was a constant companion to the Emperor, especially when going forth to return his other brothers to the Imperial fold. Ferrus looked fondly on most, if not all his younger kin, and always sought to tutor them as he was once tutored by their Father, sometimes going so far as to follow his brothers to war and deploy parts of his legion to ensure his younger siblings' success.

Though his overprotective nature caused as many arguments as it prevented, Ferrus Regnus was, as always, uncompromising in his attitude and unwavering in his beliefs.

Buckling on his helmet, Ferrus Regnus climbed aboard the Thunderhawk. On the planet below, Fulgrim was again mired in a war against a numerically superior enemy. Even after all this time, my brother never learns, Ferrus mused to himself. Courage only has value when it doesn't gamble with success.

-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

My last Ferrus was pretty awful, and I figured he deserved an overhaul.

So, here's Ferrus as a classical overprotective bigger brother who is awesome at everything, and also as a probable candidate for Warmaster. biggrin.png

I'm tired and this is probably disjointed and nonsensical, but I'll revisit it tomorrow after I've had sleep and neaten it all up.happy.png

Okay, testing of the new idea.

BOOYAH!

Okay, just let me finish changing the rest of the table and update to Ace's new story and the table should be good to go.
