Ludovic's Imperial Fists - 05/11/13 mini update

I've been wanting to do this for quite a while. A few years in fact. I've been a fan of the Imperial Fists for a long time now and have always struggled to paint yellow, despite having tried a few dozen times. Perhaps my fear of the unknown (in this case, white undercoat spray) stopped me from making any progress or perhaps it was the discovery that I had HBS (Hobby Butterfly Syndrome) and so assumed that it was a valid excuse for my pathetic lack of progress, but whatever the case, I could not paint yellow and thus collect the army of my dreams.

(Such melodrama! laugh.png)

A few days ago, I received the new Tactical Squad kit from a friend of mine and was wondering which Chapter I'd start collecting after having spent such a long time without any sort of primary focus. Ultramarines were my first choice since they got a nice set of rules and, apart from the name and some odious fluff that I have chosen to ignore, I do really like them. Besides blue is probably one of my favourite colours. However, I discovered a can of white spray paint that I had purchsed at the begining of the summer to try out. My first attempts were horrible as the paint seemed to have that frost-effect that ruins your model, but I thought I'd give it another go on one of the Space Marines I had just assembled. A few days later, I ended up with this:

I was going to give up at least once along the way, but instead told myself to man-up and just finish him for the sake of being able to show that I can actually fully paint a model once in a while teehee.gif Since those pictures were taken I have advanced quite a bit and have covered up most of the wash overspill, covered the white parts with black paint (except the pouches, because they'll be brown and I have no more brown paint for the moment), started to paint the eyes purple and have added a bit more shading to the metallic parts. I didn't take any pictures of my progress because of the atrocious lighting so I'll upload some more pictures on Monday.

Anyway, hopefully I'll manage to paint up the whole squad in yellow as I'm actually really enjoying the painting process and have leared quite a bit from my (stupid) mistakes. As always, any C&C or encouragement is welcome!

Cheers,

Ludo

I would love to be able to do that, but I just can't afford an airbrush kit and would have nowhere to put it if I had one. Besides, painting at such a slow pace is actually quite relaxing once you put music on. Great way to empty/soothe your mind after a busy day smile.png

Funny, since I find modelling to be quite stressful and irritating (especially when things go wrong). But anyway, each to his own smile.png

Well, if an idea just refuses to work out, then yes, it can get frustrating. For me, a lot of it is about poring over the huge amount of bits I have, trying out different arms, heads, etc, and then when I find something I like, I'll spend a while, sometimes hours, tweaking a pose. Once that's done, then out comes the greenstuff and that skeleton of an idea I've been tinkering with for some hours now finally starts to get some flesh on it and come to life.

God-Emperor, I really do have an illness...

Volfen: Cheers :) Hopefully I won't disappoint!

Kage: I see. Well, I do enjoy trying to find the right pose, etc. on my models, but I get very impatient with the process very quickly and become irritated if things aren't more or less exactly as I want them. My patience has improved over time, but I still find modelling a lot more stressful than anything else. Maybe I'm the one who has an illness? ;)

After countless army changes, Ludo has finally started "his" Chapter! laugh.png

Very nice yellow! I've been given a different method to paint yellow that I'll be trying out at some point soon (the GW staffer who told me, is also doing Fists - 3k from scratch for the next Throne of Skulls! blink.png ), so I can get two of many itches out of the way (Imperial Fist Marine, and Lamenters Marine)

We are very much the same...shall we join a help group together?

On topic....I personally would get bored of that as I painted imperial fists up from black and that was a nightmare. Until I found a easier better way...

Any more updated pics yet brother?

Furisio: Well, you'd better find a way to get me one, or else... :P

Darth: Cheers mate! And I honestly don't know why, but I'm glad that I finally have. However, I find the comment somewhat ironic coming from you ;)

Aquilanus: Aye, I finally have chosen to stick with "my boys" ;) What method will you be using then?

Anaziel: Thanks for the kind words, mate :) I should have him finished by the end of the week-end!

Dorns_fist & Kage: Sadly, I can only use my phone to access the internet at home for the mo, so I'll have to wait until Tuesday when I gey back to school (Monday is a national holiday) and have access to school computers to upload the pictures, sorry :( On the upside, this means thay I have no excuse for not getting quite a bit of painting done in the meantime ;)

As a more general note, thank you all for the kind words and encouragement. It's very motivating to see people like your work and I shall try my best not to disappoint :)
