Rise of the Unshackled Hammer.

I have just started a new project: Renegade Iron Hands.

Premise:

A group of Iron Hands, having recently liberated an Imperial planet from Chaos forces, was rewarded by the planet subsequently rebelling against the loyal Space Marines. The band has had this happen before, as the taint of Chaos has made many a planet rebel against them, and has grown sick of this show of weakness and corruption, and splintered away from the Imperium of man. They aren't Chaos worshiping degenerates, yet they don't fight for the stifling rules of the Imperium; they fight in their own way, for humanity, by themselves.

So, I will be using the Chaos Space Marine codex for rules, but with limitations; no Chaos gear (daemon weapons), no Daemons, etc. I might use Obliterators, but these will be count-as, and use other fitting models when I someday get to model them.

I have, so far, only three models glued, and I'll post them later today when I get back home from playing Dark Heresy 2. Any input will be appreciated.

Cheers.

So, I present, the Unshackled Hammer in all its mighty glory! Or, as much as I have of them, so far. Seven grunts left. As you can see, no aquilas present on the models, or any wing motifs.

Nice start, but a couple of things about  your pics:

1) CROP! Imgur has a built in toolbox for pix, and one of the most basic ones lets you crop and re-size images.

2) Imgur provides options for image posting links that you can easily click on and copy that have the /IMG tags already there so you just paste and the images show up in your thread. A lot of people won't bother to click on a link to go look at a picture.

I'll do just that, then. Explains the amount of views but lack of comments. :P

Also I see a high count of meltas...haha

I figured a bunch of melta weapons would be a nice way to destroy any would-be loyalists trying to bring them back into the fold of the Empire, without the risk plasma weapons carry.

I like the premise a lot - loyalists, but not emperorists. The chaos codex will give some benefits on squad provisions (such as cc. weapons for marines and two meltas(!) should you wish)... although no razorbacks, etc.

Models look solid so far, those meltas will be handy for tanks and heavy armour, but you need to get close to use them!

I do plan to have an Assault Squad with two meltaguns as well, painted in the colors of Black Templars to show the influence of the former Iron Hands "corrupting" other Space Marines. Devastators/Havocs will be Imperial Fists with, I'm thinking, two plasma cannons to utterly destroy squads of Power Armor and two Lascannons to take care of pesky tanks from afar. Melta-toting units will be deployed safely in Rhinos. The Captain will be joining a unit of Sternguard/Chosen, which might be carrying up to four meltaguns. It'll be an expensive unit, but it'll fit the theme nicely.

Another update, golly. So, I took some better pictures of my current models, added a couple of things and glued the rest of the grunts. Here you go.

And yes, I do intend on drilling the barrels sometime, when the glue is dry enough for me to not risk any weapons coming lose and giving me a nerd-rage fit. C&C welcome.

very nice idea with this, you intending to have some radical stuff, like renegade mechanicus elements and maybe even some Xenos mercenaries?

Possibly, yes. I could for the cultist unit, or I could use normal Guardsmen. Sadly, I don't have the latest Chaos Codex, so I'll wait with units I don't know enough about. I have two units of Cultists from the Dark Vengeance kit, but I'm not sure I'll be using those, unless I decide to file off every chaos symbol.

I also plan on getting a unit of Centurions, and count them as Obliterators. As they can't have missile launchers (in the old Chaos Codex at least), I'll model them to have the boltgun chests instead.

Edit: Update! Drilled holes in the boltguns. Now all I need before I start painting is to wait for some more glue on them to dry, and then POW. Undercoat. Chaos Black of course, since I'll be using the Iron Hands color scheme.

wait are those some of the new Tactical Marines...either way the knife hand is nice

Yeah, it's the new kit. I think it's pretty good, though the arms numbered to be together confused me for a few minutes while I was gluing that model. I try to make dynamic groups, but I also like the good old "firing away" stance, as you can see. The Missile Marine however looks more like he's either bringing the launcher up to his sight, or lowering it. Or perhaps just having a look with his own eyes.

Lots of melta guns same here. like thisthumbsup.gif

What other way to define your superiority as a Space Marine than to melt the other one?

Also, I will probably let this thread go into a coma after I spray the minis and then update, until I get more money to buy fresh paints.

that is understandable

but is that a lack of mold lines on the new tactical marines

if so...this is awesome to know for future purchases...

There is a distinct lack of mold lines on these new ones, but that might just me getting really lucky. I recently glued a kit of tactical Marines, and I mean to remember there were noticeable mold lines on those models, so that is a positive development.

In my experience with GW plastics, the newer the molds are, the less mold lines you'll see. I was there when the "new" tactical marine plastics came out in 3rd ed and the mold lines were almost nonexistent. I've purchased some more in the last few years, and it's horrible. Thick mold lines, softened detail and other degradation that makes me think the molds didn't line up correctly any more. Since the molds for injection plastic are so expensive, I doubt they ever had new ones made and just rode that gravy train of profit from the initial pressing 15 years ago.

Sad but true. Let's hope we don't have to worry about the same happening again, though I wouldn't bet on it.

I bought a pack of paints today (along with five Dark Angel models that aren't that impressive, but what can you do?), so I'll undercoat my models later today and hopefully start painting the squads later this week. Might do a test paint first for color scheme on a spare model first. Time will tell.

Update: I actually got my :cuss sorted and sprayed my marines just now, and not ten minutes after it's pouring down outside. Perfect timing. I'll not post images of them, as everyone's seen a black-sprayed marine before.

Also sprayed the Desperado and a Kroot Mercenary for my Inquisitor warband, if anyone wants to see, I'll post images of the finished models later.

Roster: Techpriest (leader), with two servo-skulls.

Gun-servitor with heavy bolter.

Desperado with dual las pistols.

Kroot Mercenary with kroot rifle.

  • 4 weeks later...

Update time!

Alright so, today I got my (iron) hands on a Command squad kit. I've just started working on it, and plan on fielding it as a Chosen Squad. First up we have the former Apothecary.

http://i.imgur.com/JS2IKsN.jpghttp://i.imgur.com/8SnqXte.jpghttp://i.imgur.com/Ll6y4J6.jpg

Items: Icon of Honor (count-as Icon of Chaos Glory)

Re-worked Nartecium/Reductor (count-as Lightning Claws)

This is the only model I've finished from this kit, so you'll have to stay patient. More updates likely tomorrow when I get some spare time.

Okay, I lied. I glued another model.

This will be the Aspiring Champion for the group of Chosen, and as you can see, he's equipped with two powerfists. Though, I highly doubt that's an option in the codex, so, he just counts as having one and a bolt pistol.

Okay so, another update. Was bored, so I modelled another Marine for the Chosen squad my Captain will follow.

Yet another update. Modelled a Sergeant, and figured a plasma pistol and a chainsword must be suitable, especially since the left arm is a bionic one.

Been (somewhat) productive today, so, here's the fifth and last Marine for the Chosen Squad.

Next step is, of course, basecoating the squad and soonish get to painting.
