Two Armies in Two Months?!? Dark Angels & Silver Skulls

Hello my B&C brethren I've been in a bit of a painting and hobby funk for the past, well, 9 months - pretty much since Call of Chaos ended in January. I painted a squad of CSM and a Decimator for that, and to be honest it killed me. Since then I've had a stab at some Khorne/World Eaters stuff, but got half way through that and gave up as it had taken me months to get hardly anywhere.

I'd been planning on painting some stuff purely to sell, and whilst I originally had plans for larger forces, I've decided to settle on trying two smaller forces. There won't be any Tanks or Flyers, the emphasis will be on Infantry (I struggle painting Tanks anyway!).

So to start with I'm going to paint a Dark Angels force - mainly the DV miniatures, with an additional squad of DV Dark Angels, another Squad of stripped snap-fit Marines, a Dread with a FW Plasma Cannon, and an Attack Bike (also stripped and reassembled).

I'm aiming to get these painted by the beginning of December, ready to sell in time for Christmas I'm adding sand to the bases at the moment, planning to prime them at the weekend, and then get started with painting them the beginning of next week. I'm aiming at speed painting, so I can get them done to a decent table-top standard and not break my resolve in doing so!

If these go well, I'm going to do some Silver Skulls, and I have a technique in mind which will hopefully make them even quicker to paint!

This is the first base coat of DA Green; my plan is to do 2-3 coats of thinned down DA Green, hopefully creating an effect that'll mean I won't have to do too much highlighting.  So next up will be, well, more coats of DA Green.

They look a little too bright to me, though hopefully with more layers of green that should be rectified. One thing that would worry me is how you would tie the Deathwing and Ravenwing into the paint scheme, and more specifically, paint style?

 

I'll be keeping an eye on this though.

Thank you - in all honesty, I'm not speedy at all, hence my desire to bang these out in (what for me) will be a short space of time!

Yeah, that's why I realise it'll be at least 2-3 washes to get it right. With regards to the Death-and-Ravenwing, the former will use a similar technique only with Bleached Bone then Gryphonne Sepia for shading, and the latter will get grey line highlights (these I've primed black - cheating, I know! ;) )

Here they are after the second wash - starting to look a lot more Dark Angel-y :D

Next, I think another wash, maybe some slight over brushing to make some of the high-lights pop. But then it's on to the metallics. But before I do that, I might make a start on the Deathwing...

I've given the Tacticals a third and final wash of thinned green, I just need to over-brush in places to get the highlights to pop.  Last night I decided to start on the Deathwing - I was going to paint them with a thinned wash of Bleached Bone; however as I went through my paints I picked up the Desert Yellow, and thought 'hmmm, I wonder...'  Turns out that Desert Yellow was a far better colour to thin down and get the Deathwing bone-colour armour...

They just need another wash, then I'll use some Gryphonne Sepia for shading.

As well as painting these I've built a 'quick' counts-as Typhus I'm going to sell with some of the Zombies I made last year (I don't need 130-odd of them! :D ); he's also one of my units for this year's Call of Chaos (VI):

Well, work has been continuing on the Dark Angels (pics to follow), but I've also been gettingmy second speed-paint army ready to paint - Silver Skulls. 

 

I'm painting half a company's worth, with Captain and an additional Sternguard squad. Pics are from my iPhone so aren't great:

On Sunday they had a spray of two different shades of silver paint:

That night this army became a bit of a family endeavour, as I was assisted by my wife, step-son and 6 year-old son to give them a wash of black ink as the first shading!

I‘ve been ploughing on with these, both the Skulls and the Angels - only got pics of the Skulls though!

Metallics mostly done, moving on to the details. My wife, bless her, has taken it upon herself to do the black on the shoulder pads, which is a big help - still plenty of detailing to do!

I have two weeks in which to finish these and the Angels off, so I can get them on eBay in time for Chrimbo. I‘ve been burning the candle at both ends to get them done, looks like it‘s another couple of weeks of early mornings for me!

 

I‘ve also been working on ‘Typhus‘ for Call of Chaos - I‘ve done the main parts of the armour, just need to do the rust effects on the trim now (where it‘s basecoated brown). Not so tight a deadline for him though so I‘ll leave him till I‘ve got the Marine armies done!

Yes, although I'll be painting some more stuff to sell, and I've been asked to do a an army on commission by a friend at my local gaming group.  So quite a bit of painting from me over the next year!
